HierDoc: Hierarchical Page-to-Region Evidence Routing for Long-Document Visual Question Answering

Multi-page document visual question answering requires locating sparse evidence at both the page and region levels. Existing approaches typically emphasize one level over the other: page-centric methods focus on page acquisition, with region operations serving mainly as navigation aids, whereas region-centric methods assume that the relevant pages have already been supplied. Consequently, page and region selection remain disconnected rather than forming successive evidence decisions. We propose HierDoc, a hierarchical evidence-routing framework that formulates long-document evidence acquisition as two-stage set prediction from pages to regions. A page policy selects evidence pages from the full document; these pages are then parsed for semantic elements, after which a region policy selects the elements passed to a downstream answer model. Both answer-agnostic policies are optimized with stage-wise GRPO using granularity-specific structured-set rewards. The answer model receives selected full pages together with selected region crops and OCR or table text, preserving global context while emphasizing fine-grained evidence. Across the evaluated benchmarks, HierDoc achieves state-of-the-art or competitive performance among open-weight systems, improving LongDocURL by 16.87% relative to the strongest reported open-weight baseline. Controlled ablations further show that selected regional evidence improves the page-only system in accuracy and F1 by 5.51% and 4.82%, respectively. These results demonstrate the benefit of organizing coarse page routing and fine-grained region routing as successive, separately optimized stages of a unified evidence-acquisition process.

Hierarchical Evidence-Driven Reasoning for Long Document Understanding

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) streamlines long-document understanding by leveraging retrieval mechanisms to restrict input images to a highly curated subset. However, existing multimodal RAG pipelines primarily face two critical challenges: first, standard semantic similarity retrievers frequently fetch topically overlapping yet answer-void distractor pages that mislead downstream generation; second, rigid single-pass pipelines heavily depend on initial retrieval success, where any omission of core evidence inevitably causes cascading errors. To address these challenges, we introduce HIEVI-RAG, a hierarchical, evidence-driven multimodal RAG framework for closed-domain document understanding. HIEVI-RAG systematically factorizes complex queries into a cooperative four-stage pipeline: (1) hierarchical question decomposition to break multi-hop root queries into atomic child questions; (2) coarse visual page retrieval leveraging a multimodal retriever to fetch candidate pages based on semantic similarity; (3) fine-grained page verification via EVIAGENT, a specialized multi-page verifier trained with GRPO to execute cross-page reasoning over multi-image blocks; and (4) memory-guided iterative generation that leverages accumulated sub-question context to execute multi-round, dynamic reasoning over the prioritized sequence. Extensive evaluations across four benchmarks demonstrate the robust efficacy and synergy of our framework, which significantly outperforms existing open-source baselines and exceeds the strongest reported baseline by an average of 8.05% in accuracy.

PriorZero: Bridging Language Priors and World Models for Decision Making

Leveraging the rich world knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents offers a promising path toward general intelligence. However, a fundamental prior-dynamics mismatch hinders existing approaches: static LLM knowledge cannot directly adapt to the complex transition dynamics of long-horizon tasks. Using LLM priors as fixed policies limits exploration diversity, as the prior is blind to environment-specific dynamics; while end-to-end fine-tuning suffers from optimization instability and credit assignment issues. To bridge this gap, we propose PriorZero, a unified framework that integrates LLM-derived conceptual priors into world-model-based planning through a decoupled rollout-training design. During rollout, a novel root-prior injection mechanism incorporates LLM priors exclusively at the root node of Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), focusing search on semantically promising actions while preserving the world model's deep lookahead capability. During training, PriorZero decouples world-model learning from LLM adaptation: the world model is continuously refined on interaction data to jointly improve its dynamics, policy, and value predictions, its value estimates are then leveraged to provide fine-grained credit assignment signals for stable LLM fine-tuning via alternating optimization. Experiments across diverse benchmarks, including text-based adventure games in Jericho and instruction-following gridworld tasks in BabyAI, demonstrate that PriorZero consistently improves both exploration efficiency and asymptotic performance, establishing a promising framework for LLM-empowered decision-making. One Model for All Tasks: Leveraging Efficient World Models in Multi-Task Planning

In heterogeneous multi-task decision-making, tasks not only exhibit diverse observation and action spaces but also vary substantially in their underlying complexities. While conventional multi-task world models like UniZero excel in single-task settings, we find that when handling a broad and diverse suite of tasks, gradient conflicts and the loss of model plasticity often constrain their sample efficiency. In this work, we address these challenges from two complementary perspectives: the single learning iteration and the overall learning process. First, to mitigate the gradient conflicts, we systematically investigate key architectural designs for extending UniZero. Our investigation identifies a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture as the most effective approach. We demonstrate, both theoretically and empirically, that this architecture alleviates gradient conflicts by routing task-specific representations to specialized sub-networks. This finding leads to our proposed model, \textit{ScaleZero}. Second, to dynamically allocate model capacity throughout the learning process, we introduce an online Dynamic Parameter Scaling (DPS) strategy. This strategy progressively integrates LoRA adapters in response to task-specific progress, enabling adaptive knowledge retention and parameter expansion. Evaluations on a diverse set of standard benchmarks (Atari, DMC, Jericho) demonstrate that ScaleZero, utilizing solely online reinforcement learning with one model, performs on par with specialized single-task agents. With the DPS strategy, it remains competitive while using just 71.5% of the environment interactions. These findings underscore the potential of ScaleZero for effective multi-task planning. DocR1: Evidence Page-Guided GRPO for Multi-Page Document Understanding

Understanding multi-page documents poses a significant challenge for multimodal large language models (MLLMs), as it requires fine-grained visual comprehension and multi-hop reasoning across pages. While prior work has explored reinforcement learning (RL) for enhancing advanced reasoning in MLLMs, its application to multi-page document understanding remains underexplored. In this paper, we introduce DocR1, an MLLM trained with a novel RL framework, Evidence Page-Guided GRPO (EviGRPO). EviGRPO incorporates an evidence-aware reward mechanism that promotes a coarse-to-fine reasoning strategy, guiding the model to first retrieve relevant pages before generating answers. This training paradigm enables us to build high-quality models with limited supervision. To support this, we design a two-stage annotation pipeline and a curriculum learning strategy, based on which we construct two datasets: EviBench, a high-quality training set with 4.8k examples, and ArxivFullQA, an evaluation benchmark with 8.6k QA pairs based on scientific papers. Extensive experiments across a wide range of benchmarks demonstrate that DocR1 achieves state-of-the-art performance on multi-page tasks, while consistently maintaining strong results on single-page benchmarks.

SpreadsheetLLM: Encoding Spreadsheets for Large Language Models

Spreadsheets are characterized by their extensive two-dimensional grids, flexible layouts, and varied formatting options, which pose significant challenges for large language models (LLMs). In response, we introduce SpreadsheetLLM, pioneering an efficient encoding method designed to unleash and optimize LLMs' powerful understanding and reasoning capability on spreadsheets. Initially, we propose a vanilla serialization approach that incorporates cell addresses, values, and formats. However, this approach was limited by LLMs' token constraints, making it impractical for most applications. To tackle this challenge, we develop SheetCompressor, an innovative encoding framework that compresses spreadsheets effectively for LLMs. It comprises three modules: structural-anchor-based compression, inverse index translation, and data-format-aware aggregation. It significantly improves performance in the spreadsheet table detection task, outperforming the vanilla approach by 25.6% in GPT4's in-context learning setting. Moreover, fine-tuned LLM with SheetCompressor has an average compression ratio of 25 times, and achieves a state-of-the-art 78.9% F1 score, surpassing the best existing models by 12.3%. Finally, we propose Chain of Spreadsheet for downstream tasks of spreadsheet understanding and validate it in a new and demanding spreadsheet QA task. We methodically leverage the inherent layout and structure of spreadsheets, demonstrating that SpreadsheetLLM is highly effective across a variety of spreadsheet tasks.

Vision Language Models for Spreadsheet Understanding: Challenges and Opportunities

This paper explores capabilities of Vision Language Models on spreadsheet comprehension. We propose three self-supervised challenges with corresponding evaluation metrics to comprehensively evaluate VLMs on Optical Character Recognition (OCR), spatial perception, and visual format recognition. Additionally, we utilize the spreadsheet table detection task to assess the overall performance of VLMs by integrating these challenges. To probe VLMs more finely, we propose three spreadsheet-to-image settings: column width adjustment, style change, and address augmentation. We propose variants of prompts to address the above tasks in different settings. Notably, to leverage the strengths of VLMs in understanding text rather than two-dimensional positioning, we propose to decode cell values on the four boundaries of the table in spreadsheet boundary detection. Our findings reveal that VLMs demonstrate promising OCR capabilities but produce unsatisfactory results due to cell omission and misalignment, and they notably exhibit insufficient spatial and format recognition skills, motivating future work to enhance VLMs' spreadsheet data comprehension capabilities using our methods to generate extensive spreadsheet-image pairs in various settings.

Sidebands suppression of 852 nm Cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter by argon gas

In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali metal atoms.
