Bosonic realization of SU(3) chiral Haldane phases

We give a bosonic realization of the SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) chain in the alternating conjugate representation, and study its phase diagram as a function of staggered interactions and anisotropy along the $T^3$ and $T^8$ directions. Unlike the SU(2) case, we observe a chiral-reversed quantum phase transition, where each competing phase is adiabatically connected to one of the chiral Haldane phases predicted in the SU(3) AFH chain with local adjoint representation. In the vicinity of the Heisenberg point, we identify a symmetry-protected topological state that appears at the first excited energy level. We also study the spontaneous $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry breaking of the system, and provide a variational wavefunction that captures the transition from the topological phase to the trivial phase. Finally, we propose an experimental realization of our bosonic model by two spin-1/2 bosons in an optical lattice.

Spinor bosons realization of the SU(3) Haldane phase with adjoint representation

The Haldane phase with local SU(3) adjoint representation constitutes the simplest non-trivial symmetry-protected topological phases in the SU($N>2$) Heisenberg spin chains. In this paper, we propose to realize this phase by a two-species spinor Bose gas, with each species labeling the quark or antiquark states of SU(3) symmetry. In the strong-coupling limit, we determine the ground-state phase diagram, and identify a quantum phase transition from the Haldane phase to a dimer phase. We show how to characterize the Haldane phase through its edge excitations. We also explain the physics at the dimer phase, by constructing an explicit ground-state ansatz at the dimer point.

Non-adiabatic dynamics of the entanglement entropy in a symmetry-breaking Haldane insulator

We study the non-adiabatic dynamics of a typical symmetry-protected topological phase-the Haldane insulator phase with broken bond-centered inversion. By continuously breaking the middle chain, we find the gap closes at a critical point in the deep Haldane insulator regime with a change of particle number partition of the left or right system. The adiabatic evolution fails at this critical point and we show how to predict the dynamics of the entanglement entropy near this point using a two-level model. These results show that one can find a critical regime where the entanglement measurement is relatively robust against perturbation that breaks the protecting symmetries in the Haldane insulator. This is in contrast to the common belief that the symmetry-protected topological phases are fragile without the protecting symmetries.

The eigenstate distribution fluctuation from thermal to localized transitions

We study the thermalization of a quenched disordered Bose-Hubbard model. By considering the eigenstate distribution fluctuation, we show that the thermal to many-body localized transition is always connected to a minimum of this distribution fluctuation. We also observe a Mott-localized regime, where the system fails to thermalize due to the strong on-site repulsion. At last, we show how to detect this eigenstate distribution fluctuation in cold atom systems, which is equivalent to measure the Loschmidt echo of the system. Our work suggests a way to measure the thermal to localized transitions in experiments, especially for a large system.

Polaronic and dressed molecular states in orbital Feshbach resonances

We consider the impurity problem in an orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR), with a single excited clock state $|e\uparrow\rangle$ atom immersed in a Fermi sea of electronic ground state $|g\downarrow\rangle$. We calculate the polaron effective mass and quasi-particle residue, as well as the polaron to molecule transition. By including one particle-hole excitation in the molecular state, we find significant correction to the transition point. This transition point moves toward the BCS side for increasing particle densities, which suggests that the corresponding many-body physics is similar to a narrow resonance.

Realizing the Haldane Phase with Bosons in Optical Lattices

We analyze an experimentally realizable model of bosons in a zig-zag optical lattice, showing that by rapidly modulating the magnetic field one can tune interaction parameters and realize an analog of the Haldane phase. We explain how quantum gas microscopy can be used to detect this phase's non-local string order and its topological edge states. We model the detection process. We also find that this model can display supersolid correlations, but argue that they only occur at parameter values which would be challenging to realize in an experiment.

Crossover from collisionless to collisional spin dynamics of polarized fermions

We study the transverse spin dynamics of trapped polarized Fermi gases in the high temperature limit. In the non-interacting collisionless regime, a magnetic field gradient induces collective spin wave oscillations. In the strongly interacting collisional regime, the dynamics are governed by spin diffusion. These two limits have been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically, but the crossover between them has received less attention. In this paper, we use a quantum Boltzmann equation to study transverse spin dynamics and show how the excitations evolve from dispersive to diffusive in the high temperature limit. We provide analytical solutions in the two limiting regimes, which agree well with our numerical results.

Spin dynamics of large-spin (spinor) fermions in a harmonic trap

Understanding the collective dynamics in a many-body system has been a central task in condensed matter physics. To achieve this task, we develop a Hartree-Fock theory to study the collective oscillations of spinor Fermi system, motivated by recent experiment on spin-9/2 fermions. We observe an oscillation period shoulder for small rotation angles. Different from previous studies, where the shoulder is found connected to the resonance from periodic to running phase, here the system is always in a running phase in the two-body phase space. This shoulder survives even in the many-body oscillations, which could be tested in the experiments. We also show how these collective oscillations evolve from two- to many-body. Our theory provides an alternative way to understand the collective dynamics in large-spin Fermi systems.

Orbital Feshbach Resonance: A "Wide" Narrow Resonance for Higher Transition Temperature Fermi Superfluid

In this letter we show that the recently theoretically predicted and experimentally observed "orbital Feshbach resonance" in alkali-earth-like Yb-173 atom is a narrow resonance in energy, while it is hundreds Gauss wide in term of magnetic field strength, taking the advantage that the magnetic moment difference between the open and closed channels is quite small. Therefore this is an ideal platform for the experimental realization of a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid with narrow resonance. We show that the transition temperature for the Fermi superfluid in this system, especially at the BCS side of the resonance, is even higher than that in a wide resonance, which is also due to the narrow character of this resonance. Our results will encourage experimental efforts to realize Fermi superfluid in the alkali-earth-like Yb-173 system, the properties of which will be complementary to extensively studied Fermi superfluids nearby a wide resonance in alkali K-40 and Li-6 systems.

Collisionless spin dynamics in a magnetic field gradient

We study the collisionless spin dynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas in a magnetic field gradient. In the absence of interactions, the system evolution is periodic: the magnetization develops twists, which evolve into a longitudinal polarization. Recurrences follow. For weak interaction, the exchange interactions lead to beats in these oscillations. We present an array of analytic and numerical techniques for studying this physics.

Route to observing topological edge modes in ultracold fermions

We show how to exploit the rich hyperfine structure of fermionic alkali atoms to produce a quasi-1D topological superfluid while avoiding excessive heating from off-resonant scattering. We model interacting fermions where four hyperfine states are coupled by a variety of optical and microwave fields. We calculate the local density of states in a trap, finding regimes with zero energy topological edge modes. Heating rates in this system are significantly suppressed compared to simple Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling approaches.

Radio frequency spectrum of fermions near a narrow Feshbach resonance

We calculate the radio frequency (RF) spectrum of fermionic atoms near a narrow Feshbach resonance, explaining observations made in ultracold samples of $^6\rm{Li}$ [E. L. Hazlett {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 045304 (2012)]. We use a two channel resonance model to show that the RF spectrum contains two peaks. In the wide-resonance limit, nearly all spectral weight lies in one of these peaks, and typically the second peak is very broad. We find strong temperature dependence, which can be traced to the energy dependence of the two-particle scattering. In addition to microscopic calculations, we use sum rule arguments to find generic features of the spectrum which are model independent.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of two-dimensional Bose gases in a synthetic magnetic field

We study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of two-dimensional Bose gases in a synthetic magnetic field using the standard Metropolis Monte Carlo method. The system is described by the frustrated XY model and the critical temperature is calculated though the absence of central peak of the wave function in momentum space, which can be directly measured by the time-of-flight absorbing imaging in cold atoms experiments. The results of our work show agreement with former studies on superconducting Josephson arrays.

Spontaneous separation of two-component Fermi gases in a double-well trap

The two-component Fermi gas in a double-well trap is studied using the density functional theory and the density profile of each component is calculated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the two components are spatially separate in the two wells once the repulsive interaction exceeds the Stoner point, signaling the occurrence of the ferromagnetic transition. Therefore, the double-well trap helps to explore itinerant ferromagnetism in atomic Fermi gases, since the spontaneous separation can be examined by measuring component populations in one well.
