Boundary-Value Problem in Type IIB Supergravity and Holography

In precision holography, the Euclidean on-shell action of type IIB supergravity often fails to reproduce the leading large-$N$ free energy of the dual field theory: the type IIB pseudo action, for instance, vanishes identically on the $\mathrm{EAdS}_5\times S^5$ background. We address this issue by revisiting the boundary-value problem of the Euclidean type IIB pseudo action from first principles. Classifying the admissible boundary conditions through the variational principle, we construct a generalized pseudo action whose boundary terms implement the choice of ensemble --- fixed potentials versus fixed quantized Page charges --- in which the holographic comparison is performed. For the fixed five-form-charge ensemble, the resulting boundary term reproduces the recently proposed topological correction to the Pasti--Sorokin--Tonin formulation of type IIB supergravity for holographic backgrounds of interest. We then test the generalized pseudo action on two complementary backgrounds: the $\mathrm{EAdS}_3\times S^3\times M_4$ near-horizon geometry of the D1-D5 system and the warped $\mathrm{EAdS}_6\times S^2\times\Sigma$ solutions dual to five-dimensional SCFTs. In both cases the ten-dimensional on-shell action agrees exactly with that of the corresponding lower-dimensional supergravity, and thereby with the leading large-$N$ free energy of the dual SCFT. Our results establish the choice of boundary conditions --- and hence of ensemble --- as an essential ingredient of precision holography directly in type IIB supergravity, extending recent analyses in eleven-dimensional supergravity.

Constants in Sequences of M2-brane Partition Functions

We determine in closed form the $N$-independent constant terms in the all-order $1/N$ expansions of the topologically twisted index and of the associated Bethe potential for the ABJM theory, as well as the Bethe potential constant of the ADHM theory. We reconstruct these constants analytically from high-precision Bethe-Ansatz numerics, verify them down to the level of non-perturbative corrections, and find them to be closely related to the constant map function $A$ governing the round three-sphere partition function. The resulting expressions for the ADHM and ABJM constants pass the non-trivial test dictated by 3d mirror symmetry. Via recently established factorization relations, they also determine in closed form the $N$-independent constant contribution to the squashed three-sphere partition function, through the first two leading orders in its large-squashing expansion. These constants supply precisely the piece left undetermined in the recent exact results for 3d supersymmetric partition functions to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion, and thereby mark an important step toward completing them, both in field theory and in the dual quantum gravity description.

Strategy Phasing of Cyber Attacks on Digital Substations

Digital substations that comply with IEC 61850 have improved the operational efficiency of modern power systems. However, adversaries can abuse IEC 61850 communication to manipulate circuit breaker operations in substations, which can result in severe system impacts. These cyber attacks are crafted based on broader multi-phase strategies. The existing intrusion detection systems (IDSs) often flag only isolated symptoms. Thus, there is a lack of context in the attack phase to support the deployment of mitigation measures. This paper proposes Substation Cyber Attack Strategy Phasing (SubCASP), a Hidden Markov Model(HMM)- based method that fuses IDS data logs to infer the current attack phase, next attack phase, and retrospective attack path. The attack phases are derived from an ATT&CK-based threat modeling. The SubCASP model is trained and evaluated on a reproducible attack-graph dataset. Test results are presented to demonstrate the robustness of SubCASP for various IDS observability levels and missing IDS data logs scenarios.

Towards OSV in AdS

We use supersymmetric localization for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs to establish a relation of the form $Z_{S^1\times S^2} \sim |Z_{S^3_b}|^2$ between the superconformal index and the squashed three-sphere partition function. This applies to general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and is derived using a saddle point approximation in the Cardy-like limit of small $S^1$ radius and large squashing parameter. We also show a similar relation between the topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function. In the context of holography our results lead to a relation between the partition function of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes and the large $N$ limit of $Z_{S^3_b}$ of the dual SCFT. Since the latter encodes the gauged supergravity prepotential, this result is akin to the OSV conjecture for asymptotically flat black holes. We confirm this relation in detail for SCFTs arising from M2-branes using recent large $N$ results from supersymmetric localization. We also briefly discuss a similar relation for 5d SCFTs and its implications for asymptotically AdS$_6$ black holes.

Type IIB Supergravity Action and Holography

In the prototypical AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence, the free energy of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU$(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory is commonly reproduced from the Euclidean on-shell action of five-dimensional gauged supergravity -- a consistent truncation of Type IIB supergravity -- rather than computed directly in ten dimensions. A longstanding obstacle to the latter is that the conventional Type IIB pseudo-action evaluated on the $AdS_5\times S^5$ background vanishes identically, apparently precluding a first-principles holographic comparison. A recent proposal by Kurlyand and Tseytlin, based on the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin formulation, resolves this issue for a special class of backgrounds including the $AdS_5\times S^5$ vacuum by introducing a topological term required for consistency, yielding a non-vanishing on-shell value in agreement with holography. In this work we extend this refinement to a broader class of Type IIB backgrounds by introducing a generalized topological correction under milder conditions, encompassing AdS geometries of generic dimension and non-vanishing 2-form potentials. We test the proposal on non-trivial solutions such as the Lunin-Maldacena background and the $AdS_4$ $S$-fold solution, and find agreement with the corresponding lower-dimensional gauged supergravity on-shell actions and thereby with the expected holographic observables. Our results place direct holographic comparisons within the ten-dimensional Type IIB framework on firmer ground.

Evaluation of Real-Time Mitigation Techniques for Cyber Security in IEC 61850 / IEC 62351 Substations

The digitalization of substations enlarges the cyber-attack surface, necessitating effective detection and mitigation of cyber attacks in digital substations. While machine learning-based intrusion detection has been widely explored, such methods have not demonstrated detection and mitigation within the required real-time budget. In contrast, cryptographic authentication has emerged as a practical candidate for real-time cyber defense, as specified in IEC 62351. In addition, lightweight rule-based intrusion detection that validates IEC 61850 semantics can provide specification-based detection of anomalous or malicious traffic with minimal processing delay. This paper presents the design logic and implementation aspects of three potential real-time mitigation techniques capable of countering GOOSE-based attacks: (i) IEC 62351-compliant message authentication code (MAC) scheme, (ii) a semantics-enforced rule-based intrusion detection system (IDS), and (iii) a hybrid approach integrating both MAC verification and Intrusion Detection System (IDS). A comparative evaluation of these real-time mitigation approaches is conducted using a cyber-physical system (CPS) security testbed. The results show that the hybrid integration significantly enhances mitigation capability. Furthermore, the processing delays of all three methods remain within the strict delivery requirements of GOOSE communication. The study also identifies limitations that none of the techniques can fully address, highlighting areas for future work.

F2GAN: A Feature-Feedback Generative Framework for Reliable AI-Based Fault Diagnosis in Inverter-Dominated Microgrids

Enhancing the reliability of AI based fault diagnosis in inverter dominated microgrids requires diverse and statistically balanced datasets. However, the scarcity and imbalance of high fidelity fault data, especially for rare inverter malfunctions and extreme external line faults, limit dependable model training and validation. This paper introduces a unified framework that models a detailed inverter dominated microgrid and systematically generates multiple internal and external fault scenarios to mitigate data scarcity and class imbalance. An enhanced generative model called F2GAN (Feature Feedback GAN) is developed to synthesize high dimensional tabular fault data with improved realism and statistical alignment. Unlike conventional GANs, F2GAN integrates multi level feedback based on mean variance, correlation, and feature matching losses, enabling the generator to refine output distributions toward real fault feature spaces. The generated datasets are evaluated through quantitative and qualitative analyses. Train on Synthetic, Test on Real (TSTR) experiments demonstrate strong generalization of machine learning classifiers trained exclusively on F2GAN samples. The framework is validated on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) fault diagnosis platform integrated with a real time simulator and graphical interface, achieving 100 % diagnostic accuracy under real-time testing. Results confirm that F2GAN effectively bridges the gap between simulated and real world microgrid fault datasets

AdS$_7$ Black Holes and Holography

We present a detailed study of the regularized on-shell action of the recently found asymptotically AdS$_7$ black hole supergravity solution with three angular momenta and two electric charges. We show that a particular choice of finite counterterms in the holographic renormalization procedure yields a result for the on-shell action of the supersymmetric limit of the black hole solution which is in perfect agreement with the large $N$ limit of the superconformal index of the dual 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ $A_{N}$ SCFT on $S^1\times S^5$. We also discuss a generalization of this 7d supergravity background to a new general family of black holes with horizons given by the $L^{p,q,r}$ 5d Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. The regularized on-shell action of these new 7d black holes is also in agreement with supersymmetric localization results for the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on $S^1\times L^{p,q,r}$. Finally, we briefly discuss a generalization of known AdS$_5$ gauged supergravity backgrounds to new 5d black holes with $L(p,q)$ lens space horizon topologies.

Generative AI for Critical Infrastructure in Smart Grids: A Unified Framework for Synthetic Data Generation and Anomaly Detection

In digital substations, security events pose significant challenges to the sustained operation of power systems. To mitigate these challenges, the implementation of robust defense strategies is critically important. A thorough process of anomaly identification and detection in information and communication technology (ICT) frameworks is crucial to ensure secure and reliable communication and coordination between interconnected devices within digital substations. Hence, this paper addresses the critical cybersecurity challenges confronting IEC61850-based digital substations within modern smart grids, where the integration of advanced communication protocols, e.g., generic object-oriented substation event (GOOSE), has enhanced energy management and introduced significant vulnerabilities to cyberattacks. Focusing on the limitations of traditional anomaly detection systems (ADSs) in detecting threats, this research proposes a transformative approach by leveraging generative AI (GenAI) to develop robust ADSs. The primary contributions include the suggested advanced adversarial traffic mutation (AATM) technique to generate synthesized and balanced datasets for GOOSE messages, ensuring protocol compliance and enabling realistic zero-day attack pattern creation to address data scarcity. Then, the implementation of GenAI-based ADSs incorporating the task-oriented dialogue (ToD) processes has been explored for improved detection of attack patterns. Finally, a comparison of the GenAI-based ADS with machine learning (ML)-based ADSs has been implemented to showcase the outperformance of the GenAI-based frameworks considering the AATM-generated GOOSE datasets and standard/advanced performance evaluation metrics.

Large Language Models for Power System Security: A Novel Multi-Modal Approach for Anomaly Detection in Energy Management Systems

This paper elaborates on an extensive security framework specifically designed for energy management systems (EMSs), which effectively tackles the dynamic environment of cybersecurity vulnerabilities and/or system problems (SPs), accomplished through the incorporation of novel methodologies. A comprehensive multi-point attack/error model is initially proposed to systematically identify vulnerabilities throughout the entire EMS data processing pipeline, including post state estimation (SE) stealth attacks, EMS database manipulation, and human-machine interface (HMI) display corruption according to the real-time database (RTDB) storage. This framework acknowledges the interconnected nature of modern attack vectors, which utilize various phases of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data flow. Then, generative AI (GenAI)-based anomaly detection systems (ADSs) for EMSs are proposed for the first time in the power system domain to handle the scenarios. Further, a set-of-mark generative intelligence (SoM-GI) framework, which leverages multimodal analysis by integrating visual markers with rules considering the GenAI capabilities, is suggested to overcome inherent spatial reasoning limitations. The SoM-GI methodology employs systematic visual indicators to enable accurate interpretation of segmented HMI displays and detect visual anomalies that numerical methods fail to identify. Validation on the IEEE 14-Bus system shows the framework's effectiveness across scenarios, while visual analysis identifies inconsistencies. This integrated approach combines numerical analysis with visual pattern recognition and linguistic rules to protect against cyber threats and system errors.

Cyber Attacks Detection, Prevention, and Source Localization in Digital Substation Communication using Hybrid Statistical-Deep Learning

The digital transformation of power systems is accelerating the adoption of IEC 61850 standard. However, its communication protocols lack built-in authentication and encryption, leaving them vulnerable to Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) and malicious frame injection attacks that can disrupt protection schemes operation. While most existing research focuses on detecting cyber attacks in digital substations, intrusion prevention systems have been largely overlooked due to concerns about potential network disruptions. To address this gap, this paper proposes an integrated hybrid statistical-deep learning method for detecting, preventing, and localizing IEC 61850 Sampled Values (SV)-based cyber attacks. The method models SV frames arrival times using exponentially modified Gaussian distributions and prevents malicious frames from reaching the targeted Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). Malicious frames are dropped with minimal processing overhead and latency, while the method remains robust to network latency, jitter, and time-synchronization issues, and ensures a near-zero false positive rate under non-attack conditions. Long short-term memory and Elman recurrent neural networks are used to identify anomalous variations in the estimated probability distributions across IEDs for detecting and localizing MitM attacks on SV streams. The proposed method is validated across three testbeds comprising industrial-grade communication and protection devices, hardware-in-the-loop simulations, virtualized IEDs and merging units, and high-fidelity emulated networks. Results demonstrate the method's practicality and effectiveness for deployment in IEC 61850-compliant digital substations.

Realistic timing measurements are obtained, and the time frames for deploying detection and mitigation strategies are evaluated.

Deep Learning-Enabled System Diagnosis in Microgrids: A Feature-Feedback GAN Approach

The increasing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and communication networks has brought both modernization and new vulnerabilities to the power system infrastructure. These vulnerabilities expose the system to internal faults and cyber threats, particularly False Data Injection (FDI) attacks, which can closely mimic real fault scenarios. Hence, this work presents a two-stage fault and cyberattack detection framework tailored for inverter-based microgrids. Stage 1 introduces an unsupervised learning model Feature Feedback Generative Adversarial Network (F2GAN), to distinguish between genuine internal faults and cyber-induced anomalies in microgrids. Compared to conventional GAN architectures, F2GAN demonstrates improved system diagnosis and greater adaptability to zero-day attacks through its feature-feedback mechanism. In Stage 2, supervised machine learning techniques, including Support Vector Machines (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision Trees (DT), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are applied to localize and classify faults within inverter switches, distinguishing between single-switch and multi-switch faults. The proposed framework is validated on a simulated microgrid environment, illustrating robust performance in detecting and classifying both physical and cyber-related disturbances in power electronic-dominated systems.

Perceptual Motor Learning with Active Inference Framework for Robust Lateral Control

This paper presents a novel Perceptual Motor Learning (PML) framework integrated with Active Inference (AIF) to enhance lateral control in Highly Automated Vehicles (HAVs). PML, inspired by human motor learning, emphasizes the seamless integration of perception and action, enabling efficient decision-making in dynamic environments. Traditional autonomous driving approaches--including modular pipelines, imitation learning, and reinforcement learning--struggle with adaptability, generalization, and computational efficiency. In contrast, PML with AIF leverages a generative model to minimize prediction error ("surprise") and actively shape vehicle control based on learned perceptual-motor representations. Our approach unifies deep learning with active inference principles, allowing HAVs to perform lane-keeping maneuvers with minimal data and without extensive retraining across different environments. Extensive experiments in the CARLA simulator demonstrate that PML with AIF enhances adaptability without increasing computational overhead while achieving performance comparable to conventional methods. These findings highlight the potential of PML-driven active inference as a robust alternative for real-world autonomous driving applications.

An Airy Tale at Large $N$

We study the sphere partition function of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic SCFTs arising on the worldvolume of $N$ coincident M2-branes in the presence of squashing and real mass deformations. We argue that the all-order large $N$ perturbative expansion of the partition function resums into a compact expression in terms of an Airy function. We provide ample evidence for this conjecture using numerical methods, saddle point analysis in the 't Hooft limit, and the relation of the squashed sphere partition function to the Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index. We also discuss the relation of our results to topological string theory and the statistical mechanics of Fermi gases. Our conjecture has a bearing on the AdS/CFT correspondence and the structure of perturbative M-theory corrections to 11d supergravity which we discuss.

Detecting Zero-Day Attacks in Digital Substations via In-Context Learning

The occurrences of cyber attacks on the power grids have been increasing every year, with novel attack techniques emerging every year. In this paper, we address the critical challenge of detecting novel/zero-day attacks in digital substations that employ the IEC-61850 communication protocol. While many heuristic and machine learning (ML)-based methods have been proposed for attack detection in IEC-61850 digital substations, generalization to novel or zero-day attacks remains challenging. We propose an approach that leverages the in-context learning (ICL) capability of the transformer architecture, the fundamental building block of large language models. The ICL approach enables the model to detect zero-day attacks and learn from a few examples of that attack without explicit retraining. Our experiments on the IEC-61850 dataset demonstrate that the proposed method achieves more than $85\%$ detection accuracy on zero-day attacks while the existing state-of-the-art baselines fail. This work paves the way for building more secure and resilient digital substations of the future.

AI-Enhanced Inverter Fault and Anomaly Detection System for Distributed Energy Resources in Microgrids

The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into power distribution systems has made microgrids foundational to grid modernization. These DERs, connected through power electronic inverters, create power electronics dominated grid architecture, introducing unique challenges for fault detection. While external line faults are widely studied, inverter faults remain a critical yet underexplored issue. This paper proposes various data mining techniques for the effective detection and localization of inverter faults-essential for preventing catastrophic grid failures. Furthermore, the difficulty of differentiating between system anomalies and internal inverter faults within Power Electronics-Driven Grids (PEDGs) is addressed. To enhance grid resilience, this work applies advanced artificial intelligence methods to distinguish anomalies from true internal faults, identifying the specific malfunctioning switch. The proposed FaultNet-ML methodology is validated on a 9-bus system dominated by inverters, illustrating its robustness in a PEDG environment.

Perturbatively exact supersymmetric partition functions of ABJM theory on Seifert manifolds and holography

We undertake a comprehensive analysis of the supersymmetric partition function of the $\text{U}(N)_k\times\text{U}(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory on a Seifert manifold, evaluating it to all orders in the $1/N$-perturbative expansion up to exponentially suppressed corrections. Through holographic duality, our perturbatively exact result is successfully matched with the regularized on-shell action of a dual Euclidean AdS$_4$-Taub-Bolt background incorporating 4-derivative corrections, and also provides valuable insights into the logarithmic corrections that emerge from the 1-loop calculations in M-theory path integrals. In this process, we revisit the Euclidean AdS$_4$-Taub-Bolt background carefully, elucidating the flat connection in the background graviphoton field. This analysis umambiguously determines the U(1)$_R$ holonomy along the Seifert fiber, thereby solidifying the holographic comparison regarding the partition function on a large class of Seifert manifolds.
