Better Sign Language Translation with Monolingual Data

Sign language translation (SLT) systems, which are often decomposed into video-to-gloss (V2G) recognition and gloss-to-text (G2T) translation through the pivot gloss, heavily relies on the availability of large-scale parallel G2T pairs. However, the manual annotation of pivot gloss, which is a sequence of transcribed written-language words in the order in which they are signed, further exacerbates the scarcity of data for SLT. To address this issue, this paper proposes a simple and efficient rule transformation method to transcribe the large-scale target monolingual data into its pseudo glosses automatically for enhancing the SLT translation. Empirical results show that the proposed approach can significantly improve the performance of SLT, especially achieving state-of-the-art results on two SLT benchmark datasets PHEONIX-WEATHER 2014T and ASLG-PC12. Our code has been released at: https://github.com/pengr/Mono\_SLT.

Efficient Computation of Power System Maximum Transient Linear Growth

Existing methods to determine the stability of a power system to small perturbations are based on eigenvalue analysis and focus on the asymptotic (long-term) behavior of the power grid. During the preasymptotic (short-term) transient, however, the system can exhibit large growth that is not explained by eigenvalues alone. In this paper we propose a new framework to determine the maximum (optimal) preasymptotic growth using the singular value decomposition. The approach is tailored to the analysis of quantities of interest in power system dynamics, such as the set of rotor speed deviations. Matrix-free techniques are developed to avoid the explicit formation of dense matrices and enable the analysis of large-scale systems without reaching memory bounds. Extensive results carried out from small to very large-scale systems (e.g., 70k-bus system) verify the theoretical aspects of the technique.

Dynamic Ensemble of Low-fidelity Experts: Mitigating NAS "Cold-Start"

Predictor-based Neural Architecture Search (NAS) employs an architecture performance predictor to improve the sample efficiency. However, predictor-based NAS suffers from the severe ``cold-start'' problem, since a large amount of architecture-performance data is required to get a working predictor. In this paper, we focus on exploiting information in cheaper-to-obtain performance estimations (i.e., low-fidelity information) to mitigate the large data requirements of predictor training. Despite the intuitiveness of this idea, we observe that using inappropriate low-fidelity information even damages the prediction ability and different search spaces have different preferences for low-fidelity information types. To solve the problem and better fuse beneficial information provided by different types of low-fidelity information, we propose a novel dynamic ensemble predictor framework that comprises two steps. In the first step, we train different sub-predictors on different types of available low-fidelity information to extract beneficial knowledge as low-fidelity experts. In the second step, we learn a gating network to dynamically output a set of weighting coefficients conditioned on each input neural architecture, which will be used to combine the predictions of different low-fidelity experts in a weighted sum. The overall predictor is optimized on a small set of actual architecture-performance data to fuse the knowledge from different low-fidelity experts to make the final prediction. We conduct extensive experiments across five search spaces with different architecture encoders under various experimental settings. Our method can easily be incorporated into existing predictor-based NAS frameworks to discover better architectures.

PiCO+: Contrastive Label Disambiguation for Robust Partial Label Learning

Partial label learning (PLL) is an important problem that allows each training example to be labeled with a coarse candidate set, which well suits many real-world data annotation scenarios with label ambiguity. Despite the promise, the performance of PLL often lags behind the supervised counterpart. In this work, we bridge the gap by addressing two key research challenges in PLL -- representation learning and label disambiguation -- in one coherent framework. Specifically, our proposed framework PiCO consists of a contrastive learning module along with a novel class prototype-based label disambiguation algorithm. PiCO produces closely aligned representations for examples from the same classes and facilitates label disambiguation. Theoretically, we show that these two components are mutually beneficial, and can be rigorously justified from an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm perspective. Moreover, we study a challenging yet practical noisy partial label learning setup, where the ground-truth may not be included in the candidate set. To remedy this problem, we present an extension PiCO+ that performs distance-based clean sample selection and learns robust classifiers by a semi-supervised contrastive learning algorithm. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed methods significantly outperform the current state-of-the-art approaches in standard and noisy PLL tasks and even achieve comparable results to fully supervised learning.

Deps-SAN: Neural Machine Translation with Dependency-Scaled Self-Attention Network

Syntax knowledge contributes its powerful strength in Neural machine translation (NMT) tasks. Early NMT works supposed that syntax details can be automatically learned from numerous texts via attention networks. However, succeeding researches pointed out that limited by the uncontrolled nature of attention computation, the NMT model requires an external syntax to capture the deep syntactic awareness. Although existing syntax-aware NMT methods have born great fruits in combining syntax, the additional workloads they introduced render the model heavy and slow. Particularly, these efforts scarcely involve the Transformer-based NMT and modify its core self-attention network (SAN). To this end, we propose a parameter-free, Dependency-scaled Self-Attention Network (Deps-SAN) for syntax-aware Transformer-based NMT. A quantified matrix of dependency closeness between tokens is constructed to impose explicit syntactic constraints into the SAN for learning syntactic details and dispelling the dispersion of attention distributions. Two knowledge sparsing techniques are further integrated to avoid the model overfitting the dependency noises introduced by the external parser. Experiments and analyses on IWSLT14 German-to-English and WMT16 German-to-English benchmark NMT tasks verify the effectiveness of our approach.

SoLar: Sinkhorn Label Refinery for Imbalanced Partial-Label Learning

Partial-label learning (PLL) is a peculiar weakly-supervised learning task where the training samples are generally associated with a set of candidate labels instead of single ground truth. While a variety of label disambiguation methods have been proposed in this domain, they normally assume a class-balanced scenario that may not hold in many real-world applications. Empirically, we observe degenerated performance of the prior methods when facing the combinatorial challenge from the long-tailed distribution and partial-labeling. In this work, we first identify the major reasons that the prior work failed. We subsequently propose SoLar, a novel Optimal Transport-based framework that allows to refine the disambiguated labels towards matching the marginal class prior distribution. SoLar additionally incorporates a new and systematic mechanism for estimating the long-tailed class prior distribution under the PLL setup. Through extensive experiments, SoLar exhibits substantially superior results on standardized benchmarks compared to the previous state-of-the-art PLL methods. Code and data are available at: https://github.com/hbzju/SoLar .

Observers for Differential Algebraic Equation Models of Power Networks: Jointly Estimating Dynamic and Algebraic States

Phasor measurement units ({PMUs}) have become instrumental in modern power systems for enabling real-time, wide-area monitoring and control. Accordingly, many studies have investigated efficient and robust dynamic state estimation (DSE) methods in order to accurately compute the dynamic states of generation units. Nonetheless, most of them forego the dynamic-algebraic nature of power networks and only consider their nonlinear dynamic representations. Motivated by the lack of DSE methods based on power network's differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), this paper develops a novel observer-based DSE framework in order to perform simultaneous estimation of the dynamic and algebraic states of multi-machine power networks. Specifically, we leverage the DAE dynamics of a power network around an operating point and combine them with a PMU-based measurement model capable of capturing bus voltages and line currents. The proposed $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ observer, which only requires detectability and impulse observability conditions which are satisfied for various power networks, is designed to handle various noise, unknown inputs, and input sensor failures. The results obtained from performing extensive numerical simulations on the IEEE $9$-bus and $39$-bus systems showcase the effectiveness of the proposed approach for DSE purposes.

Towards Unifying the Label Space for Aspect- and Sentence-based Sentiment Analysis

The aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained task that aims to determine the sentiment polarity towards targeted aspect terms occurring in the sentence. The development of the ABSA task is very much hindered by the lack of annotated data. To tackle this, the prior works have studied the possibility of utilizing the sentiment analysis (SA) datasets to assist in training the ABSA model, primarily via pretraining or multi-task learning. In this article, we follow this line, and for the first time, we manage to apply the Pseudo-Label (PL) method to merge the two homogeneous tasks. While it seems straightforward to use generated pseudo labels to handle this case of label granularity unification for two highly related tasks, we identify its major challenge in this paper and propose a novel framework, dubbed as Dual-granularity Pseudo Labeling (DPL). Further, similar to PL, we regard the DPL as a general framework capable of combining other prior methods in the literature. Through extensive experiments, DPL has achieved state-of-the-art performance on standard benchmarks surpassing the prior work significantly.

Robust Data-Driven Linear Power Flow Model with Probability Constrained Worst-Case Errors

To limit the probability of unacceptable worst-case linearization errors that might yield risks for power system operations, this letter proposes a robust data-driven linear power flow (RD-LPF) model. It is applicable to both transmission and distribution systems and can achieve better robustness than the recent data-driven models. The key idea is to probabilistically constrain the worst-case errors through distributionally robust chance-constrained programming. It also allows guaranteeing the linearization accuracy for a chosen operating point. Comparison results with three recent LPF models demonstrate that the worst-case error of the RD-LPF model is significantly reduced over 2- to 70-fold while reducing the average error. A compromise between computational efficiency and accuracy can be achieved through different ambiguity sets and conversion methods.

VeniBot: Towards Autonomous Venipuncture with Semi-supervised Vein Segmentation from Ultrasound Images

In the modern medical care, venipuncture is an indispensable procedure for both diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, unlike existing solutions that fully or partially rely on professional assistance, we propose VeniBot -- a compact robotic system solution integrating both novel hardware and software developments. For the hardware, we design a set of units to facilitate the supporting, positioning, puncturing and imaging functionalities. For the software, to move towards a full automation, we propose a novel deep learning framework -- semi-ResNeXt-Unet for semi-supervised vein segmentation from ultrasound images. From which, the depth information of vein is calculated and used to enable automated navigation for the puncturing unit. VeniBot is validated on 40 volunteers, where ultrasound images can be collected successfully. For the vein segmentation validation, the proposed semi-ResNeXt-Unet improves the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) by 5.36%, decreases the centroid error by 1.38 pixels and decreases the failure rate by 5.60%, compared to fully-supervised ResNeXt-Unet.

VeniBot: Towards Autonomous Venipuncture with Automatic Puncture Area and Angle Regression from NIR Images

Venipucture is a common step in clinical scenarios, and is with highly practical value to be automated with robotics. Nowadays, only a few on-shelf robotic systems are developed, however, they can not fulfill practical usage due to varied reasons. In this paper, we develop a compact venipucture robot -- VeniBot, with four parts, six motors and two imaging devices. For the automation, we focus on the positioning part and propose a Dual-In-Dual-Out network based on two-step learning and two-task learning, which can achieve fully automatic regression of the suitable puncture area and angle from near-infrared(NIR) images. The regressed suitable puncture area and angle can further navigate the positioning part of VeniBot, which is an important step towards a fully autonomous venipucture robot. Validation on 30 VeniBot-collected volunteers shows a high mean dice coefficient(DSC) of 0.7634 and a low angle error of 15.58° on suitable puncture area and angle regression respectively, indicating its potentially wide and practical application in the future.

A robust extended Kalman filter for power system dynamic state estimation using PMU measurements

This paper develops a robust extended Kalman filter to estimate the rotor angles and the rotor speeds of synchronous generators of a multimachine power system. Using a batch-mode regression form, the filter processes together predicted state vector and PMU measurements to track the system dynamics faster than the standard extended Kalman filter. Our proposed filter is based on a robust GM-estimator that bounds the influence of vertical outliers and bad leverage points, which are identified by means of the projection statistics. Good statistical efficiency under the Gaussian distribution assumption of the process and the observation noise is achieved thanks to the use of the Huber cost function, which is minimized via the iteratively reweighted least squares algorithm. The asymptotic covariance matrix of the state estimation error vector is derived via the covariance matrix of the total influence function of the GM-estimator. Simulations carried out on the IEEE 39-bus test system reveal that our robust extended Kalman filter exhibits good tracking capabilities under Gaussian process and observation noise while suppressing observation outliers, even in position of leverage. These good performances are obtained only under the validity of the linear approximation of the power system model.

Discovering Robust Convolutional Architecture at Targeted Capacity: A Multi-Shot Approach

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial examples, and studies show that increasing the model capacity of an architecture topology (e.g., width expansion) can bring consistent robustness improvements. This reveals a clear robustness-efficiency trade-off that should be considered in architecture design. In this paper, considering scenarios with capacity budget, we aim to discover adversarially robust architecture at targeted capacities. Recent studies employed one-shot neural architecture search (NAS) to discover robust architectures. However, since the capacities of different topologies cannot be aligned in the search process, one-shot NAS methods favor topologies with larger capacities in the supernet. And the discovered topology might be suboptimal when augmented to the targeted capacity. We propose a novel multi-shot NAS method to address this issue and explicitly search for robust architectures at targeted capacities. At the targeted FLOPs of 2000M, the discovered MSRobNet-2000 outperforms the recent NAS-discovered architecture RobNet-large under various criteria by a large margin of 4%-7%. And at the targeted FLOPs of 1560M, MSRobNet-1560 surpasses another NAS-discovered architecture RobNet-free by 2.3% and 1.3% in the clean and PGD-7 accuracies, respectively. Dynamic State Estimation for Power System Control and Protection

Dynamic state estimation (DSE) accurately tracks the dynamics of a power system and provides the evolution of the system state in real-time. This paper focuses on the control and protection applications of DSE, comprehensively presenting different facets of control and protection challenges arising in modern power systems. It is demonstrated how these challenges are effectively addressed with DSE-enabled solutions. As precursors to these solutions, reformulation of DSE considering both synchrophasor and sampled value measurements and comprehensive comparisons of DSE and observers have been presented. The usefulness and necessity of DSE based solutions in ensuring system stability, reliable protection and security, and resilience by revamping of control and protection methods are shown through examples, practical applications, and suggestions for further development.

Distributed Robust State Estimation for Hybrid AC/DC Distribution Systems using Multi-Source Data

Hybrid AC/DC distribution systems are becoming a popular means to accommodate the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources and flexible loads. This paper proposes a distributed and robust state estimation (DRSE) method for hybrid AC/DC distribution systems using multiple sources of data. In the proposed distributed implementation framework, a unified robust linear state estimation model is derived for each AC and DC regions, where the regions are connected via AC/DC converters and only limited information exchange is needed. To enhance the estimation accuracy of the areas with low measurement coverage, a deep neural network (DNN) is used to extract hidden system statistical information and allow deriving nodal power injections that keep up with the real-time measurement update rate. This provides the way of integrating smart meter data, SCADA measurements and zero injections together for state estimation. Simulations on two hybrid AC/DC distribution systems show that the proposed DRSE has only slight accuracy loss by the linearization formulation but offers robustness of suppressing bad data automatically, as well as benefits of improving computational efficiency.

Data-Driven Assisted Chance-Constrained Energy and Reserve Scheduling with Wind Curtailment

Chance-constrained optimization (CCO) has been widely used for uncertainty management in power system operation. With the prevalence of wind energy, it becomes possible to consider the wind curtailment as a dispatch variable in CCO. However, the wind curtailment will cause impulse for the uncertainty distribution, yielding challenges for the chance constraints modeling. To deal with that, a data-driven framework is developed. By modeling the wind curtailment as a cap enforced on the wind power output, the proposed framework constructs a Gaussian process (GP) surrogate to describe the relationship between wind curtailment and the chance constraints. This allows us to reformulate the CCO with wind curtailment as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MI-SOCP) problem. An error correction strategy is developed by solving a convex linear programming (LP) to improve the modeling accuracy. Case studies performed on the PJM 5-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of accurately accounting the influence of wind curtailment dispatch in CCO.

PIANOTREE VAE: Structured Representation Learning for Polyphonic Music

The dominant approach for music representation learning involves the deep unsupervised model family variational autoencoder (VAE). However, most, if not all, viable attempts on this problem have largely been limited to monophonic music. Normally composed of richer modality and more complex musical structures, the polyphonic counterpart has yet to be addressed in the context of music representation learning. In this work, we propose the PianoTree VAE, a novel tree-structure extension upon VAE aiming to fit the polyphonic music learning. The experiments prove the validity of the PianoTree VAE via (i)-semantically meaningful latent code for polyphonic segments; (ii)-more satisfiable reconstruction aside of decent geometry learned in the latent space; (iii)-this model's benefits to the variety of the downstream music generation.

Analytic Deep Learning-based Surrogate Model for Operational Planning with Dynamic TTC Constraints

The increased penetration of wind power introduces more operational changes of critical corridors and the traditional time-consuming transient stability constrained total transfer capability (TTC) operational planning is unable to meet the real-time monitoring need. This paper develops a more computationally efficient approach to address that challenge via the analytical deep learning-based surrogate model. The key idea is to resort to the deep learning for developing a computationally cheap surrogate model to replace the original time-consuming differential-algebraic constraints related to TTC. However, the deep learning-based surrogate model introduces implicit rules that are difficult to handle in the optimization process. To this end, we derive the Jacobian and Hessian matrices of the implicit surrogate models and finally transfer them into an analytical formulation that can be easily solved by the interior point method. Surrogate modeling and problem reformulation allow us to achieve significantly improved computational efficiency and the yielded solutions can be used for operational planning. Numerical results carried out on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in dealing with com-plicated TTC constraints while balancing the computational efficiency and accuracy.
