Product-oriented Machine Translation with Cross-modal Cross-lingual Pre-training

Translating e-commercial product descriptions, a.k.a product-oriented machine translation (PMT), is essential to serve e-shoppers all over the world. However, due to the domain specialty, the PMT task is more challenging than traditional machine translation problems. Firstly, there are many specialized jargons in the product description, which are ambiguous to translate without the product image. Secondly, product descriptions are related to the image in more complicated ways than standard image descriptions, involving various visual aspects such as objects, shapes, colors or even subjective styles. Moreover, existing PMT datasets are small in scale to support the research. In this paper, we first construct a large-scale bilingual product description dataset called Fashion-MMT, which contains over 114k noisy and 40k manually cleaned description translations with multiple product images. To effectively learn semantic alignments among product images and bilingual texts in translation, we design a unified product-oriented cross-modal cross-lingual model (\upoc~) for pre-training and fine-tuning. Experiments on the Fashion-MMT and Multi30k datasets show that our model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art models even pre-trained on the same dataset. It is also shown to benefit more from large-scale noisy data to improve the translation quality. We will release the dataset and codes at https://github.com/syuqings/Fashion-MMT.

DeepLab2 is a TensorFlow library for deep labeling, aiming to provide a state-of-the-art and easy-to-use TensorFlow codebase for general dense pixel prediction problems in computer vision. DeepLab2 includes all our recently developed DeepLab model variants with pretrained checkpoints as well as model training and evaluation code, allowing the community to reproduce and further improve upon the state-of-art systems. To showcase the effectiveness of DeepLab2, our Panoptic-DeepLab employing Axial-SWideRNet as network backbone achieves 68.0% PQ or 83.5% mIoU on Cityscaspes validation set, with only single-scale inference and ImageNet-1K pretrained checkpoints. We hope that publicly sharing our library could facilitate future research on dense pixel labeling tasks and envision new applications of this technology. Code is made publicly available at \url{https://github.com/google-research/deeplab2}.

Making the Best Use of Review Summary for Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis provides a useful overview of customer review contents. Many review websites allow a user to enter a summary in addition to a full review. Intuitively, summary information may give additional benefit for review sentiment analysis. In this paper, we conduct a study to exploit methods for better use of summary information. We start by finding out that the sentimental signal distribution of a review and that of its corresponding summary are in fact complementary to each other. We thus explore various architectures to better guide the interactions between the two and propose a hierarchically-refined review-centric attention model. Empirical results show that our review-centric model can make better use of user-written summaries for review sentiment analysis, and is also more effective compared to existing methods when the user summary is replaced with summary generated by an automatic summarization system.

Towards Linear Time Neural Machine Translation with Capsule Networks

In this study, we first investigate a novel capsule network with dynamic routing for linear time Neural Machine Translation (NMT), referred as \textsc{CapsNMT}. \textsc{CapsNMT} uses an aggregation mechanism to map the source sentence into a matrix with pre-determined size, and then applys a deep LSTM network to decode the target sequence from the source representation. Unlike the previous work \cite{sutskever2014sequence} to store the source sentence with a passive and bottom-up way, the dynamic routing policy encodes the source sentence with an iterative process to decide the credit attribution between nodes from lower and higher layers. \textsc{CapsNMT} has two core properties: it runs in time that is linear in the length of the sequences and provides a more flexible way to select, represent and aggregates the part-whole information of the source sentence. On WMT14 English-German task and a larger WMT14 English-French task, \textsc{CapsNMT} achieves comparable results with the state-of-the-art NMT systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that capsule networks have been empirically investigated for sequence to sequence problems.

What Have We Achieved on Text Summarization?

Deep learning has led to significant improvement in text summarization with various methods investigated and improved ROUGE scores reported over the years. However, gaps still exist between summaries produced by automatic summarizers and human professionals. Aiming to gain more understanding of summarization systems with respect to their strengths and limits on a fine-grained syntactic and semantic level, we consult the Multidimensional Quality Metric(MQM) and quantify 8 major sources of errors on 10 representative summarization models manually. Primarily, we find that 1) under similar settings, extractive summarizers are in general better than their abstractive counterparts thanks to strength in faithfulness and factual-consistency; 2) milestone techniques such as copy, coverage and hybrid extractive/abstractive methods do bring specific improvements but also demonstrate limitations; 3) pre-training techniques, and in particular sequence-to-sequence pre-training, are highly effective for improving text summarization, with BART giving the best results.

Resolution enhancement and realistic speckle recovery with generative adversarial modeling of micro-optical coherence tomography

A resolution enhancement technique for optical coherence tomography (OCT), based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), was developed and investigated. GANs have been previously used for resolution enhancement of photography and optical microscopy images. We have adapted and improved this technique for OCT image generation. Conditional GANs (cGANs) were trained on a novel set of ultrahigh resolution spectral domain OCT volumes, termed micro-OCT, as the high-resolution ground truth (~1$μ$m isotropic resolution). The ground truth was paired with a low-resolution image obtained by synthetically degrading resolution 4x in one of (1-D) or both axial and lateral axes (2-D). Cross-sectional image (B-scan) volumes obtained from in vivo imaging of human labial (lip) tissue and mouse skin were used in separate feasibility experiments. Accuracy of resolution enhancement compared to ground truth was quantified with human perceptual accuracy tests performed by an OCT expert. The GAN loss in the optimization objective, noise injection in both the generator and discriminator models, and multi-scale discrimination were found to be important for achieving realistic speckle appearance in the generated OCT images. The utility of high resolution speckle recovery was illustrated by an example of micro-OCT imaging of blood vessels in lip tissue. Qualitative examples applying the models to image data from outside of the training data distribution, namely human retina and mouse bladder, were also demonstrated, suggesting potential for cross-domain transferability. This preliminary study suggests that deep learning generative models trained on OCT images from high-performance prototype systems may have potential in enhancing lower resolution data from mainstream/commercial systems, thereby bringing cutting-edge technology to the masses at low cost.

A Reinforced Generation of Adversarial Examples for Neural Machine Translation

Neural machine translation systems tend to fail on less decent inputs despite its significant efficacy, which may significantly harm the credibility of this systems-fathoming how and when neural-based systems fail in such cases is critical for industrial maintenance. Instead of collecting and analyzing bad cases using limited handcrafted error features, here we investigate this issue by generating adversarial examples via a new paradigm based on reinforcement learning. Our paradigm could expose pitfalls for a given performance metric, e.g., BLEU, and could target any given neural machine translation architecture. We conduct experiments of adversarial attacks on two mainstream neural machine translation architectures, RNN-search, and Transformer. The results show that our method efficiently produces stable attacks with meaning-preserving adversarial examples. We also present a qualitative and quantitative analysis for the preference pattern of the attack, demonstrating its capability of pitfall exposure.

Neural Simile Recognition with Cyclic Multitask Learning and Local Attention

Simile recognition is to detect simile sentences and to extract simile components, i.e., tenors and vehicles. It involves two subtasks: {\it simile sentence classification} and {\it simile component extraction}. Recent work has shown that standard multitask learning is effective for Chinese simile recognition, but it is still uncertain whether the mutual effects between the subtasks have been well captured by simple parameter sharing. We propose a novel cyclic multitask learning framework for neural simile recognition, which stacks the subtasks and makes them into a loop by connecting the last to the first. It iteratively performs each subtask, taking the outputs of the previous subtask as additional inputs to the current one, so that the interdependence between the subtasks can be better explored. Extensive experiments show that our framework significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art model and our carefully designed baselines, and the gains are still remarkable using BERT.

Imitation Learning for Non-Autoregressive Neural Machine Translation

Non-autoregressive translation models (NAT) have achieved impressive inference speedup. A potential issue of the existing NAT algorithms, however, is that the decoding is conducted in parallel, without directly considering previous context. In this paper, we propose an imitation learning framework for non-autoregressive machine translation, which still enjoys the fast translation speed but gives comparable translation performance compared to its auto-regressive counterpart. We conduct experiments on the IWSLT16, WMT14 and WMT16 datasets. Our proposed model achieves a significant speedup over the autoregressive models, while keeping the translation quality comparable to the autoregressive models. By sampling sentence length in parallel at inference time, we achieve the performance of 31.85 BLEU on WMT16 Ro$\rightarrow$En and 30.68 BLEU on IWSLT16 En$\rightarrow$De.

Cauchy combination test: a powerful test with analytic p-value calculation under arbitrary dependency structures

Combining individual p-values to aggregate multiple small effects has a long-standing interest in statistics, dating back to the classic Fisher's combination test. In modern large-scale data analysis, correlation and sparsity are common features and efficient computation is a necessary requirement for dealing with massive data. To overcome these challenges, we propose a new test that takes advantage of the Cauchy distribution. Our test statistic has a very simple form and is defined as a weighted sum of Cauchy transformation of individual p-values. We prove a non-asymptotic result that the tail of the null distribution of our proposed test statistic can be well approximated by a Cauchy distribution under arbitrary dependency structures. Based on this theoretical result, the p-value calculation of our proposed test is not only accurate, but also as simple as the classic z-test or t-test, making our test well suited for analyzing massive data. We further show that the power of the proposed test is asymptotically optimal in a strong sparsity setting. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed test has both strong power against sparse alternatives and a good accuracy with respect to p-value calculations, especially for very small p-values. The proposed test has also been applied to a genome-wide association study of Crohn's disease and compared with several existing tests.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Deep Semantic Role Labeling with Self-Attention

Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) is believed to be a crucial step towards natural language understanding and has been widely studied. Recent years, end-to-end SRL with recurrent neural networks (RNN) has gained increasing attention. However, it remains a major challenge for RNNs to handle structural information and long range dependencies. In this paper, we present a simple and effective architecture for SRL which aims to address these problems. Our model is based on self-attention which can directly capture the relationships between two tokens regardless of their distance. Our single model achieves F$_1=83.4$ on the CoNLL-2005 shared task dataset and F$_1=82.7$ on the CoNLL-2012 shared task dataset, which outperforms the previous state-of-the-art results by $1.8$ and $1.0$ F$_1$ score respectively. Besides, our model is computationally efficient, and the parsing speed is 50K tokens per second on a single Titan X GPU.

Semantic Instance Annotation of Street Scenes by 3D to 2D Label Transfer

Semantic annotations are vital for training models for object recognition, semantic segmentation or scene understanding. Unfortunately, pixelwise annotation of images at very large scale is labor-intensive and only little labeled data is available, particularly at instance level and for street scenes. In this paper, we propose to tackle this problem by lifting the semantic instance labeling task from 2D into 3D. Given reconstructions from stereo or laser data, we annotate static 3D scene elements with rough bounding primitives and develop a model which transfers this information into the image domain. We leverage our method to obtain 2D labels for a novel suburban video dataset which we have collected, resulting in 400k semantic and instance image annotations. A comparison of our method to state-of-the-art label transfer baselines reveals that 3D information enables more efficient annotation while at the same time resulting in improved accuracy and time-coherent labels.

Improved Image Deblurring based on Salient-region Segmentation

Image deblurring techniques play important roles in many image processing applications. As the blur varies spatially across the image plane, it calls for robust and effective methods to deal with the spatially-variant blur problem. In this paper, a Saliency-based Deblurring (SD) approach is proposed based on the saliency detection for salient-region segmentation and a corresponding compensate method for image deblurring. We also propose a PDE-based deblurring method which introduces an anisotropic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model for latent image prediction and employs an adaptive optimization model in the kernel estimation and deconvolution steps. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Intra-and-Inter-Constraint-based Video Enhancement based on Piecewise Tone Mapping

Video enhancement plays an important role in various video applications. In this paper, we propose a new intra-and-inter-constraint-based video enhancement approach aiming to 1) achieve high intra-frame quality of the entire picture where multiple region-of-interests (ROIs) can be adaptively and simultaneously enhanced, and 2) guarantee the inter-frame quality consistencies among video frames. We first analyze features from different ROIs and create a piecewise tone mapping curve for the entire frame such that the intra-frame quality of a frame can be enhanced. We further introduce new inter-frame constraints to improve the temporal quality consistency. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm obviously outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Density and conformation with relaxed substrate, bulk, and interface electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains

Characteristics of relaxed density profile and conformation of polymer chains are studied by a Monte Carlo simulation on a discrete lattice in three dimensions using different segmental (kink-jump $K$, crank-shaft $C$, reptation $R$) dynamics. Three distinct density regimes, substrate, bulk, and interface, are identified. With the $KC$ segmental dynamics we find that the substrate coverage grows with a power-law, $d_s \propto t^γ$ with a field dependent nonuniversal exponent $γ= 0.23 + 0.7 E$. The bulk volume fraction $d_b$ and the substrate polymer density ($d_s$) increases exponentially with the field ($d_b \propto E^{0.4}$, $d_s \propto E^{0.2}$) in the low field regime. The interface polymer density $d_f$ increases with the molecular weight. With the $KCR$ segmental dynamics, bulk and substrate density decreases linearly with the temperature at high temperatures. The bulk volume fraction is found to decay with the molecular weight, $d_b \propto L_c^{-0.11}$. The radius of gyration remains Gaussian in all density regions.

Interface relaxation in electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains: Effects of segmental dynamics, molecular weight, and field

Using different segmental dynamics and relaxation, characteristics of the interface growth is examined in an electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains on a three (2+1) dimensional discrete lattice with a Monte Carlo simulation. Incorporation of faster modes such as crankshaft and reptation movements along with the relatively slow kink-jump dynamics seems crucial in relaxing the interface width. As the continuously released polymer chains are driven (via segmental movements) and deposited, the interface width $W$ grows with the number of time steps $t$, $W \propto t^β,$ ($β\sim 0.4$--$0.8)$, which is followed by its saturation to a steady-state value $W_s$. Stopping the release of additional chains after saturation while continuing the segmental movements relaxes the saturated width to an equilibrium value ($W_s \to W_r$). Scaling of the relaxed interface width $W_r$ with the driving field $E$, $W_r \propto E^{-1/2}$ remains similar to that of the steady-state $W_s$ width. In contrast to monotonic increase of the steady-state width $W_s$, the relaxed interface width $W_r$ is found to decay (possibly as a stretched exponential) with the molecular weight.
