Learning to Run challenge solutions: Adapting reinforcement learning methods for neuromusculoskeletal environments

In the NIPS 2017 Learning to Run challenge, participants were tasked with building a controller for a musculoskeletal model to make it run as fast as possible through an obstacle course. Top participants were invited to describe their algorithms. In this work, we present eight solutions that used deep reinforcement learning approaches, based on algorithms such as Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient, Proximal Policy Optimization, and Trust Region Policy Optimization. Many solutions use similar relaxations and heuristics, such as reward shaping, frame skipping, discretization of the action space, symmetry, and policy blending. However, each of the eight teams implemented different modifications of the known algorithms.

Analysis of the Crystal Ball data on $K^-p\toπ^0Σ^0$ reaction with center-of-mass energies of $1536\sim 1676$ MeV

With an effective Lagrangian approach, we analyze the $K^-p\to π^0Σ^0$ reaction to study the $Λ$ hyperon resonances by fitting the Crystal Ball data on differential cross sections and $Σ^0$ polarization with the center-of-mass energies of $1536\sim 1676$ MeV. Besides well established PDG 4-star $Λ$ resonances around this energy range, the $Λ(1600){1\over 2}^+$ resonance, listed as a 3-star resonance in PDG, is found to be definitely needed. In addition, there is strong evidence for the existence of a new $Λ({3\over 2}^+)$ resonance around 1680 MeV.

$Σ$ Resonances from $K^- N\rightarrow πΛ$ reactions with the center of mass energy from 1550 to 1676 MeV

For the study of the $Σ$ resonances, we analyze the differential cross sections and $Λ$ polarizations for the reactions $K^-n\toπ^-Λ$ and $K^-p\toπ^0Λ$ with an effective Lagrangian approach. Data of an early experiment and the recent Crystal Ball experiment at BNL are included in the analysis with the c.m. energy from 1550 to 1676 MeV. Our results clearly support the existence of a $Σ$ resonance with $J^P={1\over 2}^+$, mass near 1633 MeV, and width about 120 MeV, which confirms the 3-star $Σ(1660) 1/2^+$ in PDG. Meanwhile, our results do not support the existence of the 2-star $Σ(1620){1\over 2}^-$ in PDG. The analysis results for the parameters of the relevant $Σ$ resonances and couplings are presented.

Contribution of the t-channel $N^*(1535)$ exchange for the $p\bar p \to ϕϕ$ reaction

Since the $N^*(1535)$ resonance was found to have large coupling to the strangeness due to its possible large $s\bar s$ component, we investigate the possible contribution of the t-channel $N^*(1535)$ exchange for the $p\bar p \to ϕϕ$ reaction. Our calculation indicates that the new mechanism gives very significant contribution for the energies above 2.25 GeV and may be an important source for evading the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule in the $ϕ$ production from $N \bar{N}$ annihilation.
