A well-balanced positivity-preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for shallow water models with variable density

In this paper, we present a numerical scheme designed for coupled systems of variable-topography shallow water flow and solute transport. By integrating a variable-density system with an expression for relative density of mixtures, a novel formulation of the coupled system is derived. To ensure the well-balanced property, auxiliary variables are introduced to reformulate the variable-density shallow water equations into a new form, which is then discretized using the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with the Lax-Friedrichs (LF) flux as the numerical flux. By selecting appropriate values for the auxiliary variables, we demonstrate that the proposed method accurately preserves steady-state solutions under still water conditions, thereby verifying its well-balanced nature. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for preserving the positivity of both water depth and concentration are proposed and rigorously proven. A positivity-preserving limiter is introduced to enforce these conditions. Finally, a series of numerical examples are conducted to validate the computational accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The $\sin2\phi$ azimuthal asymmetry in single longitudinally polarized $\pi N$ Drell-Yan process

We study the $\sin2\phi$ azimuthal asymmetry in the $\pi N$ Drell-Yan process, when the nucleon is longitudinally polarized. The asymmetry is contributed by the combination of the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity distribution function. We consider the Drell-Yan processes by $\pi^\pm$ beams colliding on the proton and deuteron targets, respectively. We calculate the $\sin2\phi$ azimuthal asymmetries in these processes using the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity from spectator models. We show that the study on single polarized $\pi N$ Drell-Yan processes can not only give the information on the new 3-dimensional parton distribution functions in momentum space, but also shed light on the chiral-odd structure of the longitudinally polarized nucleon.

Collins effect in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process with a $^3$He target

We re-examine our previous calculation on the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process with a $^3$He target, and find that our previous treatment on the dilution factors may cause the results larger than the realistic situation. We thus modify our calculation in an improved treatment with an updated prediction on the $\sin(\phi_h+\phi_S)$ asymmetry for the JLab 12 GeV under the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework. Meanwhile, we also provide the prediction of such asymmetry for the JLab 6 GeV and the prediction of the $\sin(3\phi_h-\phi_S)$ asymmetry related to pretzelosity.

Single spin asymmetry in $\pi p$ Drell-Yan process

We study the single spin asymmetries for the $\pi p^\uparrow\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-X$ process. We consider the asymmetries contributed by the coupling of the Boer-Mulders function with the transversity distribution and the pretzelosity distribution, characterized by the $\sin(\phi+\phi_S)$ and $\sin(3\phi-\phi_S)$ azimuthal angular dependence, respectively. We estimate the magnitude of these asymmetries at COMPASS by using proper weighting functions. We find that the $\sin(\phi+\phi_S)$ asymmetry is of the size of a few percent and can be measured through the experiment. The $\sin(3\phi-\phi_S)$ asymmetry is smaller than the $\sin(\phi+\phi_S)$ asymmetry. After a cut on $q_T$, we succeed in enhancing the asymmetry.

Left-right asymmetry for pion and kaon production in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process

We analyze the left-right asymmetry in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process without introducing any weighting functions. With the current theoretical understanding, we find that the Sivers effect plays a key role in our analysis. We use the latest parametrization of the Sivers and fragmentation functions to reanalyze the $\pi^\pm$ production process and find that the results are sensitive to the parametrization. We also extend our calculation on the $K^{\pm}$ production, which can help us know more about the Sivers distribution of the sea quarks and the unfavored fragmentation processes. HERMES kinematics with a proton target, COMPASS kinematics with a proton, deuteron, and neutron target (the information on the neutron target can be effectively extracted from the $^3$He target), and JLab kinematics (both 6 GeV and 12 GeV) with a proton and neutron target are considered in our paper.

Pretzelosity $h_{1T}^{\perp}$ and quark orbital angular momentum

We calculate the pretzelosity distribution ($h_{1T}^{\perp}$), which is one of the eight leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), in the light-cone formalism. We find that this quantity has a simple relation with the quark orbital angular momentum distribution, thus it may provide a new possibility to access the quark orbital angular momentum inside the nucleon. The pretzelosity distribution can manifest itself through the $\sin(3ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process. We calculate the $\sin(3ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ asymmetry at HERMES, COMPASS and JLab kinematics, and present our prediction on different targets including the proton, deuteron and neutron targets. Inclusion of transverse momentum cut in data analysis could significantly enhance the $\sin(3ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ asymmetry for future measurements.

Left-right asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process

We analyze the left-right asymmetry of pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process of unpolarized charged lepton on transversely polarized nucleon target. Unlike available treatments, in which some specific weighting functions are multiplied to separate theoretically motivated quantities, we do not introduce any weighting function following the analyzing method by the E704 experiment. The advantage is that this basic observable is free of any theoretical bias, although we can perform the calculation under the current theoretical framework. We present numerical calculations at both HERMES kinematics for the proton target and JLab kinematics for the neutron target. We find that with the current theoretical understanding, Sivers effect plays a key role in our analysis.

Transversity from two pion interference fragmentation

We present calculation on the azimuthal spin asymmetries for pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process at both HERMES and COMPASS kinematics, with transversely polarized proton, deuteron and neutron targets. We calculate the asymmetry by adopting a set of parametrization of the interference fragmentation functions and two different models for the transversity. We find that the result for the proton target is insensitive to the approaches of the transversity but more helpful to understand the interference fragmentation functions. However, for the neutron target, which can be obtained through using deuteron and {$^3$He} targets, we find different predictions for different approaches to the transversity. Thus probing the two pion interference fragmentation from the neutron can provide us more interesting information on the transversity.

Single Target-Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on Transversely Polarized Nucleon Target

We use a new set of Collins functions to update a previous prediction on the azimuthal asymmetries of pion productions in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process on a transversely polarized nucleon target. We find that the calculated results can give a good explanation to the HERMES experiment with the new parametrization, and this can enrich our knowledge of the fragmentation process. Furthermore, with two different approaches of distribution and fragmentation functions, we present a prediction on the azimuthal asymmetries of pion and kaon productions at the kinematics region of the experiments E06010 and E06011 planned at Jefferson Lab (JLab). It is shown that the results are insensitive to the models for the pion case. However, the results for kaon production are sensitive to different approaches of distribution and fragmentation functions. This is helpful to clarify some points in the study of the azimuthal spin asymmetries and fragmentation functions in hadronization processes.
