Microscopic linear response calculations based on the Skyrme functional plus the pairing contribution

A self-consistent Quasiparticle-Random-Phase-Approximation (QRPA) model which employs the canonical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) basis and an energy-density functional with a Skyrme mean field part and a density-dependent pairing, is used to study the monopole collective excitations of spherical even-even nuclei. The influence of the spurious state on the strength function of the isoscalar monopole excitations is clearly assessed. We compare the effect of different kinds of pairing forces (volume pairing, surface pairing and mixed pairing) on the monopole excitation strength function. The energy of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR), which is related to the nuclear incompressibility $K_{\infty}$, is calculated for tin isotopes and the results are discussed.

Multivariate spacings based on data depth: I. Construction of nonparametric multivariate tolerance regions

This paper introduces and studies multivariate spacings. The spacings are developed using the order statistics derived from data depth. Specifically, the spacing between two consecutive order statistics is the region which bridges the two order statistics, in the sense that the region contains all the points whose depth values fall between the depth values of the two consecutive order statistics. These multivariate spacings can be viewed as a data-driven realization of the so-called ``statistically equivalent blocks.'' These spacings assume a form of center-outward layers of ``shells'' (``rings'' in the two-dimensional case), where the shapes of the shells follow closely the underlying probabilistic geometry. The properties and applications of these spacings are studied. In particular, the spacings are used to construct tolerance regions. The construction of tolerance regions is nonparametric and completely data driven, and the resulting tolerance region reflects the true geometry of the underlying distribution. This is different from most existing approaches which require that the shape of the tolerance region be specified in advance. The proposed tolerance regions are shown to meet the prescribed specifications, in terms of $β$-content and $β$-expectation. They are also asymptotically minimal under elliptical distributions. Finally, a simulation and comparison study on the proposed tolerance regions is presented.

A Probabilistic Collocation Method Based Statistical Gate Delay Model Considering Process Variations and Multiple Input Switching

Since the advent of new nanotechnologies, the variability of gate delay due to process variations has become a major concern. This paper proposes a new gate delay model that includes impact from both process variations and multiple input switching. The proposed model uses orthogonal polynomial based probabilistic collocation method to construct a delay analytical equation from circuit timing performance. From the experimental results, our approach has less that 0.2% error on the mean delay of gates and less than 3% error on the standard deviation.

A Mathematical Theory of the Topological Vertex

We have developed a mathematical theory of the topological vertex--a theory that was original proposed by M. Aganagic, A. Klemm, M. Marino, and C. Vafa in hep-th/0305132 on effectively computing Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric Calabi-Yau threefolds derived from duality between open string theory of smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds and Chern-Simons theory on three manifolds.

Difficulty in the Fermi-Liquid-Based Theory for the In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy in Untwinned High-T_c Superconductor

Recently, Eremin and Manske [1] presented a oneband Fermi-liquid theory for the in-plane magnetic anisotropy in untwinned high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6:85 (YBCO). They claimed that they found good agreement with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra. In this Comment, we point out that their conclusion on this important problem may be questionable due to an error in logic about the orthorhombicity delta_0 characterizing the lattice structure of YBCO. In Ref. [1], a single band at delta_0>0 is proved to be in accordance with the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on untwinned YBCO. But in their Erratum in PRL[3], they admit that delta_0= -0.03 was used to fit the INS data. Hence publications [1,3] contain errors that we believe invalidate their approach.

How to Detect `Decoupled' Heavy Supersymmetric Higgs Bosons

Heretofore neglected decay modes of heavy MSSM Higgs bosons into a variety of neutralino pairs may push the LHC discovery reach for these crucial elements of an extended Higgs sector to nearly the TeV-scale -- if sparticle-sector MSSM input parameters are favorable. This is well into the so-called decoupling region, including moderate to low tan(beta) values, where no known signals exist for said heavy Higgs bosons via decays involving solely SM daughter particles, and the lighter h^0 mimics the lone SM Higgs boson. While the expanse of the Higgs to sparticle discovery region is sensitive to a number of MSSM parameters, including in particular those for the sleptons, its presence is primarily linked to the gaugino inputs -- in fact, to just one parameter, M_2, if gaugino unification is invoked. Thus consideration of high vs. low M_2 realms in the MSSM should be placed on a par with the extensive consideration already given to high vs. low tan(beta) regimes.

Gromov-Witten invariants of varieties with holomorphic 2-forms

We show that a holomorphic two-form $θ$ on a smooth algebraic variety X localizes the virtual fundamental class of the moduli of stable maps $\mgn(X,β)$ to the locus where $θ$ degenerates; it then enables us to define the localized GW-invariant, an algebro-geometric analogue of the local invariant of Lee and Parker in symplectic geometry, which coincides with the ordinary GW-invariant when X is proper. It is deformation invariant. Using this, we prove formulas for low degree GW-invariants of minimal general type surfaces with p_g>0 conjectured by Maulik and Pandharipande.

Multiple scattering and energy loss in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic eA scattering

We calculate the multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We show that the quantum interference of multiple scattering amplitudes leads to suppression in hadron productions. At the leading power in medium length, the suppression can be approximately expressed in terms of a shift in $z$ of the fragmentation function $D(z)$, and could be therefore interpreted as the collisional energy loss. We compare our calculation with existing experimental data. We also discuss the effect of quark mass on the suppression. Our approach can be extended to other observables in hadronic collisions.

Effective Quark Antiquark Potential in the Quark Gluon Plasma from Gravity Dual Models

We estimate the effective heavy quark and antiquark potential in the quark gluon plasma using the gravity dual theory. Two models are considered: $AdS_{5}$ and Sakai-Sugimoto model. The effective potential, obtained by using the rotating fundamental open-string configurations, has the angular momentum dependence which generalizes the static central potential. Motivated by the asymptotic form for zero angular momentum state, we fit the effective potential for $J=1,2$ states in the binding region. The fitting parameters are found to be functions of temperature. Finally, we discuss the differences and similarities of the effective potential between the two gravity dual models. An interesting result is that position of the minimum of potential is determined only by angular momentum and independent of the temperature.

Two point extremal Gromov-Witten invariants of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

Given an algebraic surface $X$, the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$ of $n$-points on $X$ admits a contraction morphism to the $n$-fold symmetric product $X^{(n)}$ with the extremal ray generated by a class $β_n$ of a rational curve. We determine the two point extremal GW-invariants of $X^{[n]}$ with respect to the class $dβ_n$ for a simply-connected projective surface $X$ and the quantum first Chern class operator of the tautological bundle on $X^{[n]}$. The methods used are vertex algebraic description of $H^*(X^{[n]})$, the localization technique applied to $X=\mathbb P^2$, and a generalization of the reduction theorem of Kiem-J. Li to the case of meromorphic 2-forms.

Aspects of the Screening Length and Drag Force in Two Alternative Gravity Duals of the Quark-gluon Plasma

We compute the screening length of mesons with different angular momentum $J$ from two gravity dual theories. Both the asymptotically $AdS_{5}$ and Sakai-Sugimoto metrics are considered in the calculations. Using the dual description of the quark as a classical string ending on the probe brane, we obtain the interacting potential between the heavy quark and antiquark after rotating the background metric. The result shows that the screening length of mesons with different $J$ is well fit to $a_{J}/T$. The constant $a_{J}$ is determined for $J=0,1,2$ by taking advantage of numerical techniques. Finally, we calculate the drag force and relaxation times from the Sakai-Sugimoto metric and compare with the ones obtained in the $AdS_{5}$. The application of our result to charmonium and bottomonium at RHIC and LHC is briefly discussed.

Coherent multiple scattering effect in DIS

We present a QCD calculation of the coherent multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We show that the destructive interference of coherent multiple scattering leads to suppression in hadron productions. The suppression is similar to the expectations of energy loss calculations. We compare our calculation with experimental data.

On the Genus-One Gromov-Witten Invariants of a Quintic Threefold

We rederive a relation between the genus-one GW-invariants of a quintic threefold in $\Pf$ and the genus-zero and genus-one GW-invariants of $\Pf$. In contrast to the more general derivation in a separate paper, the present derivation relies on a widely believed, but still unproven, statement concerning rigidity of holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau threefolds. On the other hand, this paper's derivation is more direct and geometric. It requires a bit more effort, but relies on less outside work.

On the Genus-One Gromov-Witten Invariants of Complete Intersections

As shown in a previous paper, certain naturally arising cones of holomorphic vector bundle sections over the main component $\ov\M_{1,k}^0(¶,d)$ of the moduli space of stable genus-one holomorphic maps into $¶$ have a well-defined euler class. In this paper, we extend this result to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, $J$-holomorphic maps. We show that euler classes of such cones relate the reduced genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections to the corresponding GW-invariants of the ambient projective space. As a consequence, the standard genus-one GW-invariants of complete intersections can be expressed in terms of the genus-zero and genus-one GW-invariants of projective spaces. We state such a relationship explicitly for complete-intersection threefolds. A relationship for higher-genus invariants is conjectured as well.

Vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli of vector bundles

Let $Y$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 2$ and let $M_{r,d}(Y)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $Y$. A classical conjecture of Newstead and Ramanan states that $ c_i(M_{2,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>2(g-1)$ i.e. the top $2g-1$ Chern classes vanish. The purpose of this paper is to generalize this vanishing result to the rank 3 case by generalizing Gieseker's degeneration method. More precisely, we prove that $c_i(M_{3,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$. In other words, the top $3g-3$ Chern classes vanish. Notice that we also have $c_i(M_{3,2}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$.
