Number-resolved master equation approach to quantum transport under the self-consistent Born approximation

We construct a particle-number(n)-resolved master equation (ME) approach under the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for quantum transport through mesoscopic systems. The formulation is essentially non-Markovian and incorporates the interlay of the multi-tunneling processes and many-body correlations. The proposed n-SCBA-ME goes completely beyond the scope of the Born-Markov master equation, being applicable to transport under small bias voltage, in non-Markovian regime and with strong Coulomb correlations. For steady state, it can recover not only the exact result of noninteracting transport under arbitrary voltages, but also the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo effect. Moreover, the n-SCBA-ME approach is efficient for the study of shot noise. We demonstrate the application by a couple of representative examples, including particularly the nonequilibrium Kondo system.

Microtubule dynamic instability: the role of cracks between protofilaments

Microtubules (MTs) are cytoplasmic protein polymers that are essential for fundamental cellular processes including the maintenance of cell shape, organelle transport and formation of the mitotic spindle. Microtubule dynamic instability is critical for these processes, but it remains poorly understood, in part because the relationship between the structure of the MT tip and the growth/depolymerization transitions is enigmatic. What are the functionally significant aspects of a tip structure that is capable of promoting MT growth, and how do changes in these characteristics cause the transition to depolymerization (catastrophe)? Here we use computational models to investigate the connection between cracks (laterally unbonded regions) between protofilaments and dynamic instability. Our work indicates that it is not the depth of the cracks per se that governs MT dynamic instability. Instead it is whether the cracks terminate in GTP-rich or GDP-rich areas of the MT that governs whether a particular MT tip structure is likely to grow, shrink, or transition: the identity of the crack-terminating subunit pairs has a profound influence on the moment-by-moment behavior of the MT.

Upscaled Lattice Boltzmann Method for Simulations of Flows in Heterogeneous Porous Media

A upscaled lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for flow simulations in heterogeneous porous media, at both pore and Darcy scales, is proposed in this paper. In the micro-scale simulations, we model flows using LBM with the modified Guo et al. algorithm where we replace the force model with a simple Shan-Chen force model. The proposed upscaled LBM uses coarser grids to represent the effects of the fine-grid (pore-scale) simulations. For the upscaled LBM, effective properties and reduced-order models are proposed as we coarsen the grid. The effective properties are computed using solutions of local problems (e.g., by performing local LBM simulations) subject to some boundary conditions. A upscaled LBM that can reduce the computational complexity of existing LBM and transfer the information between different scales is implemented. The results of coarse-grid, reduced-order, simulations agree very well with averaged results obtained using a fine grid.

Test of conformal gravity with astrophysical observations

Since it can describe the rotation curves of galaxies without dark matter and can give rise to accelerated expansion, conformal gravity attracts much attention recently. As a theory of modified gravity, it is important to test conformal gravity with astrophysical observations. Here we constrain conformal gravity with SNIa and Hubble parameter data and investigate whether it suffers from an age problem with the age of APM~08279+5255. We find conformal gravity can accommodate the age of APM~08279+5255 at 3 $σ$ deviation, unlike most of dark energy models which suffer from an age problem.

Global multidimensional shock waves for 2-D and 3-D unsteady potential flow equations

Although local existence of multidimensional shock waves has been established in some fundamental references, there are few results on the global existence of those waves except the ones for the unsteady potential flow equations in n-dimensional spaces (n > 4) or in special unbounded space-time domains with non-physical boundary conditions. In this paper, we are concerned with both the local and global multidimensional conic shock wave problem for the unsteady potential flow equations when a pointed piston (i.e., the piston degenerates into a single point at the initial time) or an explosive wave expands fast in 2-D or 3-D static polytropic gas. It is shown that a multidimensional shock wave solution of such a class of quasilinear hyperbolic problems not only exists locally, but it also exists globally in the whole space-time and approaches a self-similar solution as t goes to infinity.

The CDEX-1 1 kg Point-Contact Germanium Detector for Low Mass Dark Matter Searches

The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact germanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Witten's top Chern class via cosection localization

For a Landau Ginzburg space ([C^n/G],W), we construct the Witten's top Chern classes as algebraic cycles via cosection localized virtual cycles in case all sectors are narrow. We verify all axioms of such classes. We derive an explicit formula of such classes in the free case. We prove that this construction is equivalent to the prior constructions of Polishchuk-Vaintrob, of Chiodo and of Fan-Jarvis-Ruan.

Nonequilibrium shot noise spectrum through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime: A master equation approach under self-consistent Born approximation

We construct a number($n$)-resolved master equation (ME) approach under self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for noise spectrum calculation. The formulation is essentially non-Markovian and incorporates properly the interlay of the multi-tunneling processes and many-body correlations. We apply this approach to the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo system and predict a profound nonequilibrium Kondo signature in the shot noise spectrum. The proposed $n$-SCBA-ME scheme goes completely beyond the scope of the Born-Markovian master equation approach, in the sense of being applicable to the shot noise of transport under small bias voltage, in non-Markovian regime, and with strong Coulomb correlations as favorably demonstrated in the nonequilibrium Kondo system.

Fermi Surfaces and Analytic Green's Functions from Conformal Gravity

We construct T^2-symmetric charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity. The most general solution up to an overall conformal factor contains three non-trivial parameters: the mass, electric charge and a quantity that can be identified as the massive spin-2 hair. We study the Dirac equation for the charged massless spinor in this background. The equation can be solved in terms of the general Heun's function for generic frequency ωand wave number k. This allows us to obtain the analytic Green's function G(ω, k) for both extremal and non-extremal black holes. For some special choice of back hole parameters, we find that the Green's function reduces to simpler hypergeometric or confluent hypergeometric functions. We study the Fermi surfaces associated with the poles of the Green's function with vanishing ω. We find examples where the Fermi surfaces for non-Fermi liquids as well as the characteristic Fermi ones can arise. We illustrate the non-trivial differences in the Green's function and Fermi surfaces between the extremal and non-extremal black holes.

Watt-level ultrahigh-OSNR single-longitudinal-mode tunable Brillouin fiber laser

A watt-level ultrahigh optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) tunable Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) has been demonstrated.By optimizing the length of the single mode fiber (SMF) cavity at 11m and its output ratio at sixty percent, 1.04 W output power, as well as stable SLM operation is obtained at 2.24 W pump power. The single pass cavity BFL has the advantage that Brillouin pump frequency doesn't need to match the cavity mode, thus the stability is greatly improved. As only SMF is used in the cavity, the operate wavelength can be tunable without the restriction from self lasing cavity mode. Furthermore, it proves that core-pumped single frequency fiber laser is able to generate watt-level power. The laser has excellent performance in terms of noise, linewidth, and stability.

Categorification of Donaldson-Thomas invariants by Perverse Sheaves

We show that there is a natural perverse sheaf on the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional. This gives us a cohomology theory whose Euler numbers are Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Phase-coexistence Simulations of Fluid Mixtures by the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method Using Single-Particle Models

We present a single-particle Lennard-Jones (L-J) model for CO2 and N2. Simplified L-J models for other small polyatomic molecules can be obtained following the methodology described herein. The phase-coexistence diagrams of single-component systems computed using the proposed single-particle models for CO2 and N2 agree well with experimental data over a wide range of temperatures. These diagrams are computed using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MC) method based on the Gibbs-NVT ensemble. This good agreement validates the proposed simplified models. That is, with properly selected parameters, the single-particle models have similar accuracy in predicting gas-phase properties as more complex, state-of-the-art molecular models. To further test these single-particle models, three binary mixtures of CH4, CO2 and N2 are studied using a Gibbs-NPT ensemble. These results are compared against experimental data over a wide range of pressures. The single-particle model has similar accuracy in the gas phase as traditional models although its deviation in the liquid phase is greater. The simplified model improves the computational efficiency significantly, particularly in the case of high liquid density where the acceptance rate of the particle-swap trial move increases. The MC method based on Gibbs-NVT ensemble is a viable alternative to simulate phase-coexistence of fluid mixtures. We compare, at constant temperature and pressure, the Gibbs-NPT and Gibbs-NVT ensembles to analyze their performance differences and results consistency. As theoretically predicted, the agreement between the simulations implies that Gibbs-NVT can be used to validate Gibbs-NPT predictions when experimental data is not available.

Comparison between the DSMC and DSBGK Methods

Recently, the DSBGK method (note: the original name DS-BGK is changed to DSBGK for simplicity) was proposed based on the BGK equation to reduce the stochastic noise in simulating rarefied gas flows at low velocity, in which the deviation from equilibrium state is small making the traditional DSMC simulation time-consuming due to the dominance of noise in transient results. In both DSMC and DSBGK simulations, the simulated molecules move into and out of cells randomly and frequently. Consequently, the transient information of molecules in each particular cell contains significant noise. The DSMC method uses the transient values of molecular variables to compute the cell's variables (including number density, flow velocity and temperature) and so the stochastic noise in its cell's variables is remarkable particularly in the case of low velocity. In the DSBGK simulation, the increments rather than the transient information of molecular variables are used to update the cell's variables based on the mass, momentum and energy conservation principles of intermolecular collision process. This updating scheme significantly reduces the noise in cell's variables of DSBGK simulations because the molecular variables are updated smoothly by the extrapolation of acceptance-rejection scheme and so their increments contain low noise. The detailed comparisons of algorithms and results between the DSMC and DSBGK methods are given here. Several benchmark problems are simulated to verify the DSBGK method by comparison with the DSMC method as criterion.

Saturn's Rings are Fractal

Over the past few decades, various conjectures were advanced that Saturn's rings are Cantor-like sets, although no convincing fractal analysis of actual images has ever appeared. We focus on the images sent by the Cassini spacecraft mission: slide #42 "Mapping Clumps in Saturn's Rings" and slide #54 "Scattered Sunshine". Using the box-counting method, we determine the fractal dimension of rings seen here (and in several other images from the same source) to be consistently about 1.6~1.7. This supports many conjectures put forth over several decades that Saturn's rings are indeed fractal.

An algebraic proof of the hyperplane property of the genus one GW-invariants of quintics

Li-Zinger's hyperplane theorem states that the genus one GW-invariants of the quintic threefold is the sum of its reduced genus one GW-invariants and 1/12 multiplies of its genus zero GW-invariants. We apply the Guffin-Sharpe-Witten's theory (GSW theory) to give an algebro-geometric proof of the hyperplane theorem, including separation of contributions and computation of 1/12.

Superconductivity suppression of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 single crystals by substitution of transition-metal (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)

We investigated the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities on the single-crystalline p-type Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) superconductors. The superconductivity indicates robustly against impurity of Ru, while weakly against the impurities of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. However, the present Tc suppression rate of both magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities remains much lower than what was expected for the s\pm-wave model. The temperature dependence of resistivity data is observed an obvious low-T upturn for the crystals doped with high-level impurity, which is due to the occurrence of localization. Thus, the relatively weak Tc suppression effect from Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are considered as a result of localization rather than pair-breaking effect in s\pm-wave model.

Two sample tests for high-dimensional covariance matrices

We propose two tests for the equality of covariance matrices between two high-dimensional populations. One test is on the whole variance--covariance matrices, and the other is on off-diagonal sub-matrices, which define the covariance between two nonoverlapping segments of the high-dimensional random vectors. The tests are applicable (i) when the data dimension is much larger than the sample sizes, namely the "large $p$, small $n$" situations and (ii) without assuming parametric distributions for the two populations. These two aspects surpass the capability of the conventional likelihood ratio test. The proposed tests can be used to test on covariances associated with gene ontology terms.
