Klinkenberg Slippage Effect in the Permeability Computations of Shale Gas by the Pore-scale Simulations

The prediction of permeability (i.e., apparent permeability) for the shale gas is challenging due to the Klinkenberg slippage effect that depends on the pore size and gas pressure. A recent Monte Carlo molecular simulation method (i.e., DSBGK method) is employed to accurately compute the permeability by the pore-scale simulations at different pressures. The computed results of a benchmark problem proposed here are used to verify the accuracy of the simple Klinkenberg correlation model, which relates the permeability to the intrinsic permeability (i.e., liquid permeability) and pressure. The verification shows that the Klinkenberg correlation model as a fitting formula is appropriate for the industry applications since the relative error is small in the whole range of the flow regime as long as it has been calibrated for each particular rock sample at the two ends with low and high pressures, respectively, by determining the model parameters using accurate permeability data that can be obtained by the scheme presented herein.

Progress in nonmagnetic impurity doping studies on Fe-based superconductors

We review the progress of nonmagnetic impurity doping study on the Fe-based superconductors. On the theoretical side, two highly potential candidates for the pairing symmetry order parameter, i.e. the multi-gap s++ and s+- wave models, have been proposed but continuously debated. The debate arises because of the complex gap structure, exceptive magnetic and metallic behaviors of Fe-based superconductors which may make the influences of nonmagnetic defects varied in chemical potential, impurity disorder, inter- and intra-band scattering strength, and electron localization, and hence difficulty in directly obtaining the most important information for understanding the symmetry order parameter. Experimentally, the nonmagnetic impurity substitution study has been widely carried out, which has provided very useful insights. We review herein the various nonmagnetic impurity doping experiments, including the controlled defects within the superconducting Fe2X2 planes through samples quality improvement, a single impurity effects on the electronic state and local moment, the magnetic response of the Fe2X2 planes both on macroscopic scale as antiferromagnetic state and local scale of moment, as well as the significant effect in modifying the transport properties. The experiments enable us to qualitatively analyze the nonmagnetic impurities effects on the superconducting state for many Fe-based superconductors. We also propose herein some strategies for the nonmagnetic impurity doping study. As an important model for explaining the nonmagnetic impurities doping effects, the pair-breaking model is compared with various theoretical approaches via analyzing the pair-breaking rates of various Fe-superconductors.

Long-lived Neel states in antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy for atomic-scale antiferromagnetic spintronics

It has been experimentally established that magnetic adatoms on surfaces can be arranged to form antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy and Neel states in such spin systems can be used to realize information storage. Here, we investigate eigen states, quantum spin dynamics, and life times of Neel states in short antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy on the basis of numerical exact diagonalization method. We show rigorously that as long as the uniaxial anisotropy is very strong, the ground state and the first excitation state, being nearly degenerate, are safely separated from the other states and thus dominate the quantum dynamics of the Neel states. Through further numerical analysis, we achieve a powerful life-time expression of the Neel states for arbitrary spin and model parameters. It is interesting that for the famous Fe adatom chains on Cu$_2$N surface, 14 or 16 Fe adatoms are enough to obtain a practical long life-time for Neel state storage of information. These should be applicable to other similar antiferromagnetic spin systems for atomic-scale antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Differential Spatial Modulation with Gray Coded Antenna Activation Order

Differential spatial modulation (DSM) was recently proposed to overcome the challenge of channel estimation in spatial modulation (SM). In this letter, we propose a gray code order of antenna index permutations for DSM. To facilitate the implementation, the well-known Trotter-Johnson ranking and unranking algorithms are adopted, which results in similar computational complexity to the existing DSM that uses the lexicographic order. The coding gain achieved by the proposed gray code order over the existing lexicographic order is also analyzed and verified via simulations, which reveals a maximum of about 1.2dB for the case of four transmit antennas. Based on the gray coding framework, we further propose a diversity-enhancing scheme named intersected gray (I-gray) code order for DSM, where the permutations of active antenna indices are selected directly from the odd (even) positions of the full permutations in the gray code order. From analysis and simulations, it is shown that the I-gray code order can harvests an additional diversity order at the expense of only one information bit loss for each transmission with respect to the gray code order.

Model Reduction of Kinetic Equations by Operator Projection

By a further study of the mechanism of the hyperbolic regularization of the moment system for Boltzmann equation proposed in [Z. Cai, Y. Fan, R. Li, Comm. Math. Sci. 11(2): 547-571, 2013], we point out that the key point is treating the time and space derivative in the same way. Based on this understanding, a uniform framework to derive globally hyperbolic moment systems from kinetic equations using an operator projection method is proposed. The framework is so concise and clear that it can be treated as an algorithm with four inputs to derive hyperbolic moment system by routine calculations. Almost all existing globally hyperbolic moment system can be included in the framework, as well as some new moment system including globally hyperbolic regularized versions of Grad ordered moment system and a multidimensional extension of the quadrature-based moment system.

Approximation of Reachable Set for Coherently Controlled Open Quantum Systems: Application to Quantum State Engineering

Precisely characterizing and controlling realistic open quantum systems is one of the most challenging and exciting frontiers in quantum sciences and technologies. In this Letter, we present methods of approximately computing reachable sets for coherently controlled dissipative systems, which is very useful for assessing control performances. We apply this to a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance spin system and implement some tasks of quantum control in open systems at a near optimal performance in view of purity: e.g., increasing polarization and preparing pseudo-pure states. Our work shows interesting and promising applications of environment-assisted quantum dynamics.

Physical Dust Models for the Extinction toward Supernova 2014J in M82

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are powerful cosmological "standardizable candles" and the most precise distance indicators. However, a limiting factor in their use for precision cosmology rests on our ability to correct for the dust extinction toward them. SN 2014J in the starburst galaxy M82, the closest detected SN~Ia in three decades, provides unparalleled opportunities to study the dust extinction toward an SN Ia. In order to derive the extinction as a function of wavelength, we model the color excesses toward SN 2014J, which are observationally derived over a wide wavelength range in terms of dust models consisting of a mixture of silicate and graphite. The resulting extinction laws steeply rise toward the far ultraviolet, even steeper than that of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We infer a visual extinction of $A_V \approx 1.9~\rm mag$, a reddening of $E(B-V)\approx1.1~ \rm mag$, and a total-to-selective extinction ratio of $R_V \approx 1.7$, consistent with that previously derived from photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations. The size distributions of the dust in the interstellar medium toward SN 2014J are skewed toward substantially smaller grains than that of the Milky Way and the SMC.

Robust Collaborative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization For Hyperspectral Unmixing (R-CoNMF)

The recently introduced collaborative nonnegative matrix factorization (CoNMF) algorithm was conceived to simultaneously estimate the number of endmembers, the mixing matrix, and the fractional abundances from hyperspectral linear mixtures. This paper introduces R-CoNMF, which is a robust version of CoNMF. The robustness has been added by a) including a volume regularizer which penalizes the distance to a mixing matrix inferred by a pure pixel algorithm; and by b) introducing a new proximal alternating optimization (PAO) algorithm for which convergence to a critical point is guaranteed. Our experimental results indicate that R-CoNMF provides effective estimates both when the number of endmembers are unknown and when they are known.

Detangling Extrinsic and Intrinsic Hysteresis for Detecting Dynamic Switch of Electric Dipoles using Graphene Field-Effect Transistors on Ferroelectric Gates

A transition in source-drain current vs back gate voltage ID - VBG characteristics from extrinsic polar molecule dominant hysteresis to anti-hysteresis induced by an oxygen deficient surface layer that is intrinsic to the ferroelectric thin films has been observed on graphene field-effect transistors on Pb0.92La0.08Zr0.52Ti0.48O3 gates GFET/PLZT-Gate during a vacuum annealing process developed to systematically remove the polar molecules adsorbed on the GFET channel surface. This allows detangle of the extrinsic and intrinsic hysteresis on GFET/PLZT-gate devices and detection of the dynamic switch of electric dipoles using GFETs, taking advantage of their high gating efficiency on ferroelectric gate. A model of the charge trapping and pinning mechanism is proposed to successfully explain the transition. In response to pulsed VBG trains of positive, negative, as well as alternating polarities, respectively, the source-drain current ID variation is instantaneous with the response amplitude following the ID - VBG loops measured by DC VBG with consideration of the remnant polarization after a given VBG pulse when the gate electric field exceeds the coercive field of the PLZT. A detection sensitivity of around 212 dipole/um2 has been demonstrated at room temperature, suggesting the GFET/ferroelectric-gate devices provide a promising high-sensitivity scheme for uncooled detection of electrical dipole dynamic switch.

Intrinsic life-time and external manipulation of Neel states in antiferromagnetic adatom spins on semiconductor surfaces

It has been proposed that antiferromagnetic Fe adatom spins on semiconductor Cu-N surfaces can be used to store information [S. Loth {\it et al}, Science \textbf{335}, 196 (2012)]. Here, we investigate spin dynamics of such antiferromagnetic systems through Monte Carlo simulations. We find out the temperature and size laws of switching rates of Néel states and show that the Néel states can become stable enough for the information storage when the number of spins reaches to one or two dozens of the Fe spins. We also explore promising methods for manipulating the Néel states. These could help realize information storage with such antiferromagnetic spin systems.

Improved Quantum LDPC Decoding Strategies For The Misidentified Quantum Depolarizing Channel

Quantum cryptography via key distribution mechanisms that utilize quantum entanglement between sender-receiver pairs will form the basis of future large-scale quantum networks. A key engineering challenge in such networks will be the ability to correct for decoherence effects in the distributed entanglement resources. It is widely believed that sophisticated quantum error correction codes, such as quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, will be pivotal in such a role. However, recently the importance of the channel mismatch effect in degrading the performance of deployed quantum LDPC codes has been pointed out. In this work we help remedy this situation by proposing new quantum LDPC decoding strategies that can significantly reduce performance degradation by as much as $50\%$. Our new strategies for the quantum LDPC decoder are based on previous insights from classical LDPC decoders in mismatched channels, where an asymmetry in performance is known as a function of the estimated channel noise. We show how similar asymmetries carry over to the quantum depolarizing channel, and how an estimate of the depolarization flip parameter weighted to larger values leads to significant performance improvement.

Highly Retrievable Spinwave-Photon Entanglement Source

Entanglement between a single photon and a quantum memory forms the building blocks for quantum repeater and quantum network. Previous entanglement sources are typically with low retrieval efficiency, which limits future larger-scale applications. Here, we report a source of highly retrievable spinwave-photon entanglement. Polarization entanglement is created through interaction of a single photon with ensemble of atoms inside a low-finesse ring cavity. The cavity is engineered to be resonant for dual spinwave modes, which thus enables efficient retrieval of the spinwave qubit. An intrinsic retrieval efficiency up to 76(4)% has been observed. Such a highly retrievable atom-photon entanglement source will be very useful in future larger-scale quantum repeater and quantum network applications.

The evolution of the power law k-essence cosmology

We investigate the evolution of the power law k-essence field in FRWL spacetime. The autonomous dynamical system and critical points are obtained. The corresponding cosmological parameters, such as $Ω_{ϕ}$ and $w_{ϕ}$, are calculated at these critical points. We find it is possible to achieve an equation of state crossing through $-1$ for k-essence field. The results we obtained indicate that the power law k-essence dark energy model can be compatible with observations.

Torus localization and wall crossing for cosection localized virtual cycles

Since its introduction in 1995 by Li-Tian and Behrend-Fantechi, the theory of virtual fundamental class has played a key role in algebraic geometry, defining important invariants such as the Gromov-Witten invariant and the Donaldson-Thomas invariant. Quite a few methods for handling the virtual fundamental classes were discovered such as torus localization, degeneration, virtual pullback and cosection localization. Often combining these methods turns out to be quite effective. In this paper, we prove virtual pullback, torus localization and wall crossing formulas for cosection localized virtual cycles.

Sparse Deep Stacking Network for Image Classification

Sparse coding can learn good robust representation to noise and model more higher-order representation for image classification. However, the inference algorithm is computationally expensive even though the supervised signals are used to learn compact and discriminative dictionaries in sparse coding techniques. Luckily, a simplified neural network module (SNNM) has been proposed to directly learn the discriminative dictionaries for avoiding the expensive inference. But the SNNM module ignores the sparse representations. Therefore, we propose a sparse SNNM module by adding the mixed-norm regularization (l1/l2 norm). The sparse SNNM modules are further stacked to build a sparse deep stacking network (S-DSN). In the experiments, we evaluate S-DSN with four databases, including Extended YaleB, AR, 15 scene and Caltech101. Experimental results show that our model outperforms related classification methods with only a linear classifier. It is worth noting that we reach 98.8% recognition accuracy on 15 scene.

Discriminating dark energy models by using the statefinder hierarchy and the growth rate of matter perturbations

We apply the Statefinder hierarchy and the growth rate of matter perturbations to discriminate modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), superfluid Chaplygin gas (SCG), purely kinetic k-essence (PKK), and $Λ$CDM model. We plot the evolutional trajectories of these models in the statefinder plane and in the composite diagnostic plane. We find that GCG, MCG, SCG, PKK, and $Λ$CDM can be distinguished well from each other at the present epoch by using the composite diagnostic $\{ε(z), S^{(1)}_{5}\}$. Using other combinations, such as $\{S^{(1)}_{3}, S^{(1)}_4\}$, $\{S^{(1)}_{3}, S_{5}\}$, $\{ε(z), S^{(1)}_{3}\}$, and $\{ε(z), S_4 \}$, some of these five dark energy models cannot be distinguished.
