Collaborative Multi-BS Power Management for Dense Radio Access Network using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Network energy efficiency is a main pillar in the design and operation of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate a dense radio access network (dense-RAN) capable of radiated power management at the base station (BS). Aiming to improve the long-term network energy efficiency, an optimization problem is formulated by collaboratively managing multi-BSs radiated power levels with constraints on the users traffic volume and achievable rate. Considering stochastic traffic arrivals at the users and time-varying network interference, we first formulate the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then develop a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on the cloud-RAN operation scheme. To tackle the trade-off between complexity and performance, the overall optimization of multi-BSs energy efficiency with the multiplicative complexity constraint is modeled to achieve nearoptimal performance by using a deep Q-network (DQN). In DQN,each BS first maximizes its individual energy efficiency, and then cooperates with other BSs to maximize the overall multiBSs energy efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can converge faster and enjoy a network energy efficiency improvement by 5% and 10% compared with the benchmarks of the Q-learning and sleep schemes, respectively.

Beamforming and Phase Shift Design for HR-IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network with a Malicious Attacker

In this paper, we propose to use hybrid relay-intelligent reflecting surface (HR-IRS) to improve the security performance of directional modulation (DM) system. In particular, the eavesdropper in this system works in full-duplex (FD) mode and he will eavesdrop on the confidential message (CM) as well as send malicious jamming. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming, transmit beamforming and phase shift matrix (PSM) of HR-IRS. Since the optimization problem is un-convex and the variables are coupled to each other, we solve this problem by iteratively optimizing these variables. The receive beamforming and transmit beamforming are obtained based on generalized Rayleigh-Ritz theorem and Dinkelbach's Transform respectively. And for PSM, two methods, called separate optimization of PSM (SO-PSM) and joint optimization of PSM (JO-PSM) are proposed. Thus, two iterative algorithms are proposed accordingly, namely maximizing SR based on SO-PSM (Max-SR-SOP) and maximizing SR based on JO-PSM (Max-SR-JOP). The former has better performance and the latter has lower complexity. The simulation results show that when HR-IRS has sufficient power budget, the proposed Max-SR-SOP and Max-SR-JOP can enable HR-IRS-aided DM network to obtain higher SR than passive IRS-aided DM network.

BEVHeight: A Robust Framework for Vision-based Roadside 3D Object Detection

While most recent autonomous driving system focuses on developing perception methods on ego-vehicle sensors, people tend to overlook an alternative approach to leverage intelligent roadside cameras to extend the perception ability beyond the visual range. We discover that the state-of-the-art vision-centric bird's eye view detection methods have inferior performances on roadside cameras. This is because these methods mainly focus on recovering the depth regarding the camera center, where the depth difference between the car and the ground quickly shrinks while the distance increases. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, dubbed BEVHeight, to address this issue. In essence, instead of predicting the pixel-wise depth, we regress the height to the ground to achieve a distance-agnostic formulation to ease the optimization process of camera-only perception methods. On popular 3D detection benchmarks of roadside cameras, our method surpasses all previous vision-centric methods by a significant margin. The code is available at {\url{https://github.com/ADLab-AutoDrive/BEVHeight}}.

LogoNet: a fine-grained network for instance-level logo sketch retrieval

Sketch-based image retrieval, which aims to use sketches as queries to retrieve images containing the same query instance, receives increasing attention in recent years. Although dramatic progress has been made in sketch retrieval, few efforts are devoted to logo sketch retrieval which is still hindered by the following challenges: Firstly, logo sketch retrieval is more difficult than typical sketch retrieval problem, since a logo sketch usually contains much less visual contents with only irregular strokes and lines. Secondly, instance-specific sketches demonstrate dramatic appearance variances, making them less identifiable when querying the same logo instance. Thirdly, there exist several sketch retrieval benchmarking datasets nowadays, whereas an instance-level logo sketch dataset is still publicly unavailable. To address the above-mentioned limitations, we make twofold contributions in this study for instance-level logo sketch retrieval. To begin with, we construct an instance-level logo sketch dataset containing 2k logo instances and exceeding 9k sketches. To our knowledge, this is the first publicly available instance-level logo sketch dataset. Next, we develop a fine-grained triple-branch CNN architecture based on hybrid attention mechanism termed LogoNet for accurate logo sketch retrieval. More specifically, we embed the hybrid attention mechanism into the triple-branch architecture for capturing the key query-specific information from the limited visual cues in the logo sketches. Experimental evaluations both on our assembled dataset and public benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed network.

SS-CPGAN: Self-Supervised Cut-and-Pasting Generative Adversarial Network for Object Segmentation

This paper proposes a novel self-supervised based Cut-and-Paste GAN to perform foreground object segmentation and generate realistic composite images without manual annotations. We accomplish this goal by a simple yet effective self-supervised approach coupled with the U-Net based discriminator. The proposed method extends the ability of the standard discriminators to learn not only the global data representations via classification (real/fake) but also learn semantic and structural information through pseudo labels created using the self-supervised task. The proposed method empowers the generator to create meaningful masks by forcing it to learn informative per-pixel as well as global image feedback from the discriminator. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the standard benchmark datasets.

Design and Optimization for Transmissive RIS Transceiver Enabled Uplink Communication Systems

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enabled uplink communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is investigated. Specifically, a non-conventional receiver architecture equipped with a single receiving horn antenna and a transmissive RIS is first proposed, and a far-near field channel model based on planar waves and spherical waves is also given. Then, in order to maximize the system sum-rate of uplink communications, we formulate a joint optimization problem over subcarrier allocation, power allocation and RIS transmissive coefficient design while taking account of user quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the optimization problem is non-convex, so it is challenging to solve it directly. In order to tackle this problem, the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is utilized to decouple the optimization variables and divide the problem into two sub-problems to solve. First, the problem of joint subcarrier allocation and power allocation is solved via the Lagrangian dual decomposition method. Then, the RIS transmissive coefficient design scheme can be obtained by applying difference-of-convex (DC) programming, successive convex approximation (SCA) and penalty function methods. Finally, the two sub-problems are iterated alternately until convergence is achieved. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm has good convergence performance and can improve sum-rate of the proposed system compared with other benchmark algorithms.

Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in KTaO$_3$ heterointerface superconductors

Broken symmetries play a fundamental role in superconductivity and influence many of its properties in a profound way. Understanding these symmetry breaking states is essential to elucidate the various exotic quantum behaviors in non-trivial superconductors. Here, we report an experimental observation of spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking of superconductivity at the heterointerface of amorphous (a)-YAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$(111) with a superconducting transition temperature of 1.86 K. Both the magnetoresistance and superconducting critical field in an in-plane field manifest striking twofold symmetric oscillations deep inside the superconducting state, whereas the anisotropy vanishes in the normal state, demonstrating that it is an intrinsic property of the superconducting phase. We attribute this behavior to the mixed-parity superconducting state, which is an admixture of \emph{s}-wave and \emph{p}-wave pairing components induced by strong spin-orbit coupling inherent to inversion symmetry breaking at the heterointerface of a-YAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$. Our work suggests an unconventional nature of the underlying pairing interaction in the KTaO$_3$ heterointerface superconductors, and brings a new broad of perspective on understanding non-trivial superconducting properties at the artificial heterointerfaces.

Boundary-to-Solution Mapping for Groundwater Flows in a Toth Basin

In this paper, the authors propose a new approach to solving the groundwater flow equation in the Toth basin of arbitrary top and bottom topographies using deep learning. Instead of using traditional numerical solvers, they use a DeepONet to produce the boundary-to-solution mapping. This mapping takes the geometry of the physical domain along with the boundary conditions as inputs to output the steady state solution of the groundwater flow equation. To implement the DeepONet, the authors approximate the top and bottom boundaries using truncated Fourier series or piecewise linear representations. They present two different implementations of the DeepONet: one where the Toth basin is embedded in a rectangular computational domain, and another where the Toth basin with arbitrary top and bottom boundaries is mapped into a rectangular computational domain via a nonlinear transformation. They implement the DeepONet with respect to the Dirichlet and Robin boundary condition at the top and the Neumann boundary condition at the impervious bottom boundary, respectively. Using this deep-learning enabled tool, the authors investigate the impact of surface topography on the flow pattern by both the top surface and the bottom impervious boundary with arbitrary geometries. They discover that the average slope of the top surface promotes long-distance transport, while the local curvature controls localized circulations. Additionally, they find that the slope of the bottom impervious boundary can seriously impact the long-distance transport of groundwater flows. Overall, this paper presents a new and innovative approach to solving the groundwater flow equation using deep learning, which allows for the investigation of the impact of surface topography on groundwater flow patterns.

Quadrature Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave Transmission

In this letter, we investigate a novel quadrature spatial scattering modulation (QSSM) transmission technique based on millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, in which the transmitter generates two orthogonal beams targeting candidate scatterers in the channel to carry the real and imaginary parts of the conventional signal, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum likelihood (ML) detector is adopted at the receiver to recover the received beams and signals. Based on the ML detector, we derive the closed-form average bit error probability (ABEP) expression of the QSSM scheme. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic ABEP expression of the proposed scheme. Monte Carlo simulations verify the exactness and tightness of the derivation results. It is shown that the ABEP performance of QSSM is better than that of traditional spatial scattering modulation.

Pi-ViMo: Physiology-inspired Robust Vital Sign Monitoring using mmWave Radars

Continuous monitoring of human vital signs using non-contact mmWave radars is attractive due to their ability to penetrate garments and operate under different lighting conditions. Unfortunately, most prior research requires subjects to stay at a fixed distance from radar sensors and to remain still during monitoring. These restrictions limit the applications of radar vital sign monitoring in real life scenarios. In this paper, we address these limitations and present "Pi-ViMo", a non-contact Physiology-inspired Robust Vital Sign Monitoring system, using mmWave radars. We first derive a multi-scattering point model for the human body, and introduce a coherent combining of multiple scatterings to enhance the quality of estimated chest-wall movements. It enables vital sign estimations of subjects at any location in a radar's field of view. We then propose a template matching method to extract human vital signs by adopting physical models of respiration and cardiac activities. The proposed method is capable to separate respiration and heartbeat in the presence of micro-level random body movements (RBM) when a subject is at any location within the field of view of a radar. Experiments in a radar testbed show average respiration rate errors of 6% and heart rate errors of 11.9% for the stationary subjects and average errors of 13.5% for respiration rate and 13.6% for heart rate for subjects under different RBMs.

Frozen Language Model Helps ECG Zero-Shot Learning

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most commonly used non-invasive, convenient medical monitoring tools that assist in the clinical diagnosis of heart diseases. Recently, deep learning (DL) techniques, particularly self-supervised learning (SSL), have demonstrated great potential in the classification of ECG. SSL pre-training has achieved competitive performance with only a small amount of annotated data after fine-tuning. However, current SSL methods rely on the availability of annotated data and are unable to predict labels not existing in fine-tuning datasets. To address this challenge, we propose Multimodal ECG-Text Self-supervised pre-training (METS), the first work to utilize the auto-generated clinical reports to guide ECG SSL pre-training. We use a trainable ECG encoder and a frozen language model to embed paired ECG and automatically machine-generated clinical reports separately. The SSL aims to maximize the similarity between paired ECG and auto-generated report while minimize the similarity between ECG and other reports. In downstream classification tasks, METS achieves around 10% improvement in performance without using any annotated data via zero-shot classification, compared to other supervised and SSL baselines that rely on annotated data. Furthermore, METS achieves the highest recall and F1 scores on the MIT-BIH dataset, despite MIT-BIH containing different classes of ECG compared to the pre-trained dataset. The extensive experiments have demonstrated the advantages of using ECG-Text multimodal self-supervised learning in terms of generalizability, effectiveness, and efficiency.

Amplitude-Varying Perturbation for Balancing Privacy and Utility in Federated Learning

While preserving the privacy of federated learning (FL), differential privacy (DP) inevitably degrades the utility (i.e., accuracy) of FL due to model perturbations caused by DP noise added to model updates. Existing studies have considered exclusively noise with persistent root-mean-square amplitude and overlooked an opportunity of adjusting the amplitudes to alleviate the adverse effects of the noise. This paper presents a new DP perturbation mechanism with a time-varying noise amplitude to protect the privacy of FL and retain the capability of adjusting the learning performance. Specifically, we propose a geometric series form for the noise amplitude and reveal analytically the dependence of the series on the number of global aggregations and the $(ε,δ)$-DP requirement. We derive an online refinement of the series to prevent FL from premature convergence resulting from excessive perturbation noise. Another important aspect is an upper bound developed for the loss function of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) trained by FL running the new DP mechanism. Accordingly, the optimal number of global aggregations is obtained, balancing the learning and privacy. Extensive experiments are conducted using MLP, supporting vector machine, and convolutional neural network models on four public datasets. The contribution of the new DP mechanism to the convergence and accuracy of privacy-preserving FL is corroborated, compared to the state-of-the-art Gaussian noise mechanism with a persistent noise amplitude.

An Improved Pair Method to Probe the Dust Extinction Law

Dust extinction law is crucial to recover the intrinsic energy distribution of celestial objects and infer the characteristics of interstellar dust. Based on the traditional pair method, an improved pair method is proposed to model the dust extinguished spectral energy distribution (SED) of an individual star. Instead of the mathematically parameterizing extinction curves, the extinction curves in this work are directly from the silicate-graphite dust model, so that the dust extinction law can be obtained and the dust properties can be analyzed simultaneously. The ATLAS9 stellar model atmosphere is adopted for the intrinsic SEDs in this work, while the silicate-graphite dust model with a dust size distribution of $dn/da \sim a^{-α}{\rm exp}(-a/a_c),~0.005 < a < 5~μ{\rm m}$ for each component is adopted for the model extinction curves. One typical extinction tracer in the dense region (V410 Anon9) and one in the diffuse region (Cyg OB2 \#12) of the MW are chosen to test the reliability and the practicability of the improved pair method in different stellar environments. The results are consistent with their interstellar environments and are in agreement with the previous observations and studies, which prove that the improved pair method is effective and applicable in different stellar environments. In addition to the reliable extinction results, the derived parameters in the dust model can be used to analyze the dust properties, which cannot be achieved by other methods with the mathematical extinction models. With the improved pair method, the stellar parameters can also be inferred and the extinction law beyond the wavelengths of observed data can be predicted based on the dust model as well.

EfficientFace: An Efficient Deep Network with Feature Enhancement for Accurate Face Detection

In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) have significantly advanced face detection. In particular, lightweight CNNbased architectures have achieved great success due to their lowcomplexity structure facilitating real-time detection tasks. However, current lightweight CNN-based face detectors trading accuracy for efficiency have inadequate capability in handling insufficient feature representation, faces with unbalanced aspect ratios and occlusion. Consequently, they exhibit deteriorated performance far lagging behind the deep heavy detectors. To achieve efficient face detection without sacrificing accuracy, we design an efficient deep face detector termed EfficientFace in this study, which contains three modules for feature enhancement. To begin with, we design a novel cross-scale feature fusion strategy to facilitate bottom-up information propagation, such that fusing low-level and highlevel features is further strengthened. Besides, this is conducive to estimating the locations of faces and enhancing the descriptive power of face features. Secondly, we introduce a Receptive Field Enhancement module to consider faces with various aspect ratios. Thirdly, we add an Attention Mechanism module for improving the representational capability of occluded faces. We have evaluated EfficientFace on four public benchmarks and experimental results demonstrate the appealing performance of our method. In particular, our model respectively achieves 95.1% (Easy), 94.0% (Medium) and 90.1% (Hard) on validation set of WIDER Face dataset, which is competitive with heavyweight models with only 1/15 computational costs of the state-of-the-art MogFace detector.

InOR-Net: Incremental 3D Object Recognition Network for Point Cloud Representation

3D object recognition has successfully become an appealing research topic in the real-world. However, most existing recognition models unreasonably assume that the categories of 3D objects cannot change over time in the real-world. This unrealistic assumption may result in significant performance degradation for them to learn new classes of 3D objects consecutively, due to the catastrophic forgetting on old learned classes. Moreover, they cannot explore which 3D geometric characteristics are essential to alleviate the catastrophic forgetting on old classes of 3D objects. To tackle the above challenges, we develop a novel Incremental 3D Object Recognition Network (i.e., InOR-Net), which could recognize new classes of 3D objects continuously via overcoming the catastrophic forgetting on old classes. Specifically, a category-guided geometric reasoning is proposed to reason local geometric structures with distinctive 3D characteristics of each class by leveraging intrinsic category information. We then propose a novel critic-induced geometric attention mechanism to distinguish which 3D geometric characteristics within each class are beneficial to overcome the catastrophic forgetting on old classes of 3D objects, while preventing the negative influence of useless 3D characteristics. In addition, a dual adaptive fairness compensations strategy is designed to overcome the forgetting brought by class imbalance, by compensating biased weights and predictions of the classifier. Comparison experiments verify the state-of-the-art performance of the proposed InOR-Net model on several public point cloud datasets.

Measuring the primordial curvature perturbations from the scalar induced gravitational waves

The scalar induced gravitational waves are produced from primordial curvature perturbations in the second order of perturbations. We constrain the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves from gravitational waves observations. If there is no detection of the scalar induced gravitational waves, the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves is constrained by some upper limits. Depends on these upper limits, we can obtain the constraints on the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations. For a power-law scalar power spectrum, the constraints on the power spectrum are affected by adding the upper limit of scalar induced gravitational waves from Square Kilometer Array (SKA). In the standard model, the mean values of the scalar amplitude and the spectral index shift to lower values when SKA is added to the combination of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) datasets, namely $\ln(10^{10}A_s)=3.038\pm0.013$ and $n_s=0.9589^{+0.0021}_{-0.0011}$ at $68\%$ confidence level. We also consider the effects of the existing ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, the existing Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) and Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), while the constraints from CMB+BAO datasets are totally within their upper limits of scalar induced gravitational waves. Furthermore, we characterize the scalar fluctuation spectrum in terms of the spectral index $n_s$ and its first two derivatives. We calculate corresponding power spectrum of scalar induced gravitational waves theoretically and give the constraints on the running of the spectral index and the running of the running of the spectral index.

A Multi-modal Deformable Land-air Robot for Complex Environments

In this paper, a multi-modal deformable robot is introduced that can both fly and drive. Compatibility issues with multi-modal locomotive fusion for this hybrid land-air robot are solved using proposed design conceptions, including power settings, energy selection, and designs of deformable structure. The robot can also automatically transform between land and air modes during 3D planning and tracking. Meanwhile, we proposed a algorithms for evaluation the performance of land-air robots. A series of comparisons and experiments were conducted to demonstrate the robustness and reliability of the proposed structure in complex field environments.
