Electron heat flux and propagating fronts in plasma thermal quench via ambipolar transport

The thermal collapse of a nearly collisionless plasma interacting with a cooling spot, in which the electron parallel heat flux plays an essential role, is investigated both theoretically and numerically. We show that such thermal collapse, which is known as thermal quench in tokamaks, comes about in the form of propagating fronts, originating from the cooling spot, along the magnetic field lines. The slow fronts, propagating with local ion sound speed, limit the aggressive cooling of plasma, which is accompanied by a plasma cooling flow toward the cooling spot. The extraordinary physics underlying such a cooling flow is that the fundamental constraint of ambipolar transport along the field line limits the spatial gradient of electron thermal conduction flux to the much weaker convective scaling, as opposed to the free-streaming scaling, so that a large electron temperature and hence pressure gradient can be sustained. The last ion front for a radiative cooling spot is a shock front where cold but flowing ions meet the hot ions.

A One-dimensional HEVC video steganalysis method using the Optimality of Predicted Motion Vectors

Among steganalysis techniques, detection against motion vector (MV) domain-based video steganography in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard remains a hot and challenging issue. For the purpose of improving the detection performance, this paper proposes a steganalysis feature based on the optimality of predicted MVs with a dimension of one. Firstly, we point out that the motion vector prediction (MVP) of the prediction unit (PU) encoded using the Advanced Motion Vector Prediction (AMVP) technique satisfies the local optimality in the cover video. Secondly, we analyze that in HEVC video, message embedding either using MVP index or motion vector differences (MVD) may destroy the above optimality of MVP. And then, we define the optimal rate of MVP in HEVC video as a steganalysis feature. Finally, we conduct steganalysis detection experiments on two general datasets for three popular steganography methods and compare the performance with four state-of-the-art steganalysis methods. The experimental results show that the proposed optimal rate of MVP for all cover videos is 100\%, while the optimal rate of MVP for all stego videos is less than 100\%. Therefore, the proposed steganography scheme can accurately distinguish between cover videos and stego videos, and it is efficiently applied to practical scenarios with no model training and low computational complexity.

O2CTA: Introducing Annotations from OCT to CCTA in Coronary Plaque Analysis

Targeted diagnosis and treatment plans for patients with coronary artery disease vary according to atherosclerotic plaque component. Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is widely used for artery imaging and determining the stenosis degree. However, the limited spatial resolution and susceptibility to artifacts fail CCTA in obtaining lumen morphological characteristics and plaque composition. It can be settled by invasive optical coherence tomography (OCT) without much trouble for physicians, but bringing higher costs and potential risks to patients. Therefore, it is clinically critical to introduce annotations of plaque tissue and lumen characteristics from OCT to paired CCTA scans, denoted as \textbf{the O2CTA problem} in this paper. We propose a method to handle the O2CTA problem. CCTA scans are first reconstructed into multi-planar reformatted (MPR) images, which agree with OCT images in term of semantic contents. The artery segment in OCT, which is manually labelled, is then spatially aligned with the entire artery in MPR images via the proposed alignment strategy. Finally, a classification model involving a 3D CNN and a Transformer, is learned to extract local features and capture dependence along arteries. Experiments on 55 paired OCT and CCTA we curate demonstrate that it is feasible to classify the CCTA based on the OCT labels, with an accuracy of 86.2%, while the manual readings of OCT and CCTA vary significantly, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.113. We will make our source codes, models, data, and results publicly available to benefit the research community.

Trusted AI in Multi-agent Systems: An Overview of Privacy and Security for Distributed Learning

Motivated by the advancing computational capacity of distributed end-user equipments (UEs), as well as the increasing concerns about sharing private data, there has been considerable recent interest in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) that can be processed on on distributed UEs. Specifically, in this paradigm, parts of an ML process are outsourced to multiple distributed UEs, and then the processed ML information is aggregated on a certain level at a central server, which turns a centralized ML process into a distributed one, and brings about significant benefits. However, this new distributed ML paradigm raises new risks of privacy and security issues. In this paper, we provide a survey of the emerging security and privacy risks of distributed ML from a unique perspective of information exchange levels, which are defined according to the key steps of an ML process, i.e.: i) the level of preprocessed data, ii) the level of learning models, iii) the level of extracted knowledge and, iv) the level of intermediate results. We explore and analyze the potential of threats for each information exchange level based on an overview of the current state-of-the-art attack mechanisms, and then discuss the possible defense methods against such threats. Finally, we complete the survey by providing an outlook on the challenges and possible directions for future research in this critical area.

Dynamic Dual-Graph Fusion Convolutional Network For Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

In this paper, a dynamic dual-graph fusion convolutional network is proposed to improve Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis performance. The following are the paper's main contributions: (a) propose a novel dynamic GCN architecture, which is an end-to-end pipeline for diagnosis of the AD task; (b) the proposed architecture can dynamically adjust the graph structure for GCN to produce better diagnosis outcomes by learning the optimal underlying latent graph; (c) incorporate feature graph learning and dynamic graph learning, giving those useful features of subjects more weight while decreasing the weights of other noise features. Experiments indicate that our model provides flexibility and stability while achieving excellent classification results in AD diagnosis.

Analysis and Optimization of Wireless Federated Learning with Data Heterogeneity

With the rapid proliferation of smart mobile devices, federated learning (FL) has been widely considered for application in wireless networks for distributed model training. However, data heterogeneity, e.g., non-independently identically distributions and different sizes of training data among clients, poses major challenges to wireless FL. Limited communication resources complicate the implementation of fair scheduling which is required for training on heterogeneous data, and further deteriorate the overall performance. To address this issue, this paper focuses on performance analysis and optimization for wireless FL, considering data heterogeneity, combined with wireless resource allocation. Specifically, we first develop a closed-form expression for an upper bound on the FL loss function, with a particular emphasis on data heterogeneity described by a dataset size vector and a data divergence vector. Then we formulate the loss function minimization problem, under constraints on long-term energy consumption and latency, and jointly optimize client scheduling, resource allocation, and the number of local training epochs (CRE). Next, via the Lyapunov drift technique, we transform the CRE optimization problem into a series of tractable problems. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmarks in terms of the learning accuracy and energy consumption.

In Search of Infall Motion in Molecular Clumps. IV. Mapping of the Global Infall Sources

We have used the IRAM 30-m telescope to map some targets with HCO$^+$ (1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) lines in order to search for gas infall evidence in the clumps. In this paper, we report the mapping results for 13 targets. All of these targets show HCO$^+$ emissions, while H$^{13}$CO$^+$ emissions are observed in ten of them. The HCO$^+$ integrated intensity maps of ten targets show clear clumpy structures, and nine targets show clumpy structures in the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ maps. Using the RADEX radiative transfer code, we estimate the column density of H$^{13}$CO$^+$, and determine the abundance ratio [H$^{13}$CO$^+$]/[H$_2$] to be approximately 10$^{-12}$ to 10$^{-10}$. Based on the asymmetry of the HCO$^+$ line profiles, we identify 11 targets show blue profiles, while six clumps have global infall evidence. We use the RATRAN and two-layer models to fit the HCO$^+$ line profiles of these infall sources, and analyze their spatial distribution of the infall velocity. The average infall velocities estimated by these two models are 0.24 -- 1.85 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.28 -- 1.45 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The mass infall rate ranges from approximately 10$^{-5}$ to 10$^{-2}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, which suggests that intermediate- or high-mass stars may be forming in the target regions.

The Infrared Extinction Law in the Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud based on UKIDSS and Spitzer

Investigating the extinction properties in dense molecular clouds is of significant importance for understanding the behavior of interstellar dust and its impact on observations. In this study, we comprehensively examined the extinction law in the Ophiuchus cloud across a wavelength range from 0.8$\,μ\rm m$ to 8$\,μ\rm m$. To achieve this, we analyzed NIR and MIR data obtained from the UKIDSS GCS and the Spitzer c2d survey, respectively. By fitting a series of color-color diagrams, we determined color-excess ratios $E_{J-λ}/E_{J-K}$ for seven passbands. These ratios were then directly converted to derive the relative extinction law $A_λ/A_K$. Our findings demonstrate that the Ophiuchus cloud exhibits a characteristic of flat MIR extinction, consistent with previous studies. Additionally, our results reveal variations in the extinction law with extinction depth, indicating a flatter trend from the NIR to MIR bands as extinction increases. Notably, our analysis reveals no significant difference in the MIR extinction law among the four dark clouds: L1712, L1689, L1709, and L1688. However, distinct variations were observed in the extinction law for regions outside the dark clouds, specifically L1688N and L1688W. These regions displayed lower color-excess ratios $E_{J-λ}/E_{J-K}$ in the Spitzer/IRAC bands. This observation lends support to the dust growth occurring in the dense regions of the Ophiuchus cloud.

Aspect based sentimental analysis for travellers' reviews

Airport service quality evaluation is commonly found on social media, including Google Maps. This valuable for airport management in order to enhance the quality of services provided. However; prior studies either provide general review for topics discussed by travellers or provide sentimental value to tag the entire review without specifically mentioning the airport service that is behind such value. Accordingly, this work proposes using aspect based sentimental analysis in order to provide more detailed analysis for travellers reviews. This works applied aspect based sentimental analysis on data collected from Google Map about Dubai and Doha airports. The results provide tangible reasons to use aspect based sentimental analysis in order to understand more the travellers and spot airport services that are in need for improvement.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Intelligent Reflecting Surface Optimization for TDD MultiUser MIMO Systems

In this letter, we investigate the discrete phase shift design of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a time division duplexing (TDD) multi-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. We modify the design of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) scheme so that we can maximizing the average downlink data transmission rate free from the sub-channel channel state information (CSI). Based on the characteristics of the model, we modify the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm and integrate gated recurrent unit (GRU) to tackle the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed PPO-GRU surpasses the benchmarks in terms of performance, convergence speed, and training stability.

Creative Birds: Self-Supervised Single-View 3D Style Transfer

In this paper, we propose a novel method for single-view 3D style transfer that generates a unique 3D object with both shape and texture transfer. Our focus lies primarily on birds, a popular subject in 3D reconstruction, for which no existing single-view 3D transfer methods have been developed. The method we propose seeks to generate a 3D mesh shape and texture of a bird from two single-view images. To achieve this, we introduce a novel shape transfer generator that comprises a dual residual gated network (DRGNet), and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). DRGNet extracts the features of source and target images using a shared coordinate gate unit, while the MLP generates spatial coordinates for building a 3D mesh. We also introduce a semantic UV texture transfer module that implements textural style transfer using semantic UV segmentation, which ensures consistency in the semantic meaning of the transferred regions. This module can be widely adapted to many existing approaches. Finally, our method constructs a novel 3D bird using a differentiable renderer. Experimental results on the CUB dataset verify that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the single-view 3D style transfer task. Code is available in https://github.com/wrk226/creative_birds.

RIS-Aided Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave MIMO Transmissions

This paper investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted spatial scattering modulation (SSM) scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths are respectively considered in the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, the conditional pairwise error probability (CPEP) expression for the RIS-SSM scheme is derived under the two cases of received beam correct and demodulation error. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expressions of the unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP) by employing two different methods: the probability density function and the moment-generating function expressions with a descending order of scatterer gains. To provide more useful insights, we derive the asymptotic UPEP and the diversity gain of the RIS-SSM scheme in the high SNR region. Depending on UPEP and the corresponding Euclidean distance, we get the union upper bound of the average bit error probability (ABEP). A new framework for ergodic capacity analysis is also provided to acquire the proposed system's effective capacity. Finally, all derivation results are validated via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, revealing that the proposed RIS-SSM scheme outperforms the benchmarks in terms of reliability.

Performance of RIS-Assisted Full-Duplex Space Shift Keying With Imperfect Self-Interference Cancellation

In this paper, we consider a full-duplex (FD) space shift keying (SSK) communication system, where information exchange between two users is assisted only by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In particular, the impact of loop interference (LI) between the transmit and receive antennas as well as residual self-interference (SI) from the RIS is considered. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, we derive the conditional pairwise error probability and the numerical integration expression for the unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP). Since it is difficult to find a closed-form solution, we perform accurate estimation by the Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature (GCQ) method. To gain more useful insights, we derive an expression for UPEP in the high signal-to-noise ratio region and further give the average bit error probability (ABEP) expression. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to validate the derived results. It is found that SI and LI have severe impacts on system performance. Fortunately, these two disturbances can be well counteracted by increasing the number of RIS units.

Bayesian Linear Regression with Cauchy Prior and Its Application in Sparse MIMO Radar

In this paper, a sparse signal recovery algorithm using Bayesian linear regression with Cauchy prior (BLRC) is proposed. Utilizing an approximate expectation maximization(AEM) scheme, a systematic hyper-parameter updating strategy is developed to make BLRC practical in highly dynamic scenarios. Remarkably, with a more compact latent space, BLRC not only possesses essential features of the well-known sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) and iterative reweighted l2 (IR-l2) algorithms but also outperforms them. Using sparse array (SPA) and coprime array (CPA), numerical analyses are first performed to show the superior performance of BLRC under various noise levels, array sizes, and sparsity levels. Applications of BLRC to sparse multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar array signal processing are then carried out to show that the proposed BLRC can efficiently produce high-resolution images of the targets.

General vs. Long-Tailed Age Estimation: An Approach to Kill Two Birds with One Stone

Facial age estimation has received a lot of attention for its diverse application scenarios. Most existing studies treat each sample equally and aim to reduce the average estimation error for the entire dataset, which can be summarized as General Age Estimation. However, due to the long-tailed distribution prevalent in the dataset, treating all samples equally will inevitably bias the model toward the head classes (usually the adult with a majority of samples). Driven by this, some works suggest that each class should be treated equally to improve performance in tail classes (with a minority of samples), which can be summarized as Long-tailed Age Estimation. However, Long-tailed Age Estimation usually faces a performance trade-off, i.e., achieving improvement in tail classes by sacrificing the head classes. In this paper, our goal is to design a unified framework to perform well on both tasks, killing two birds with one stone. To this end, we propose a simple, effective, and flexible training paradigm named GLAE, which is two-fold. Our GLAE provides a surprising improvement on Morph II, reaching the lowest MAE and CMAE of 1.14 and 1.27 years, respectively. Compared to the previous best method, MAE dropped by up to 34%, which is an unprecedented improvement, and for the first time, MAE is close to 1 year old. Extensive experiments on other age benchmark datasets, including CACD, MIVIA, and Chalearn LAP 2015, also indicate that GLAE outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches significantly.

Mobility-Aware Joint User Scheduling and Resource Allocation for Low Latency Federated Learning

As an efficient distributed machine learning approach, Federated learning (FL) can obtain a shared model by iterative local model training at the user side and global model aggregating at the central server side, thereby protecting privacy of users. Mobile users in FL systems typically communicate with base stations (BSs) via wireless channels, where training performance could be degraded due to unreliable access caused by user mobility. However, existing work only investigates a static scenario or random initialization of user locations, which fail to capture mobility in real-world networks. To tackle this issue, we propose a practical model for user mobility in FL across multiple BSs, and develop a user scheduling and resource allocation method to minimize the training delay with constrained communication resources. Specifically, we first formulate an optimization problem with user mobility that jointly considers user selection, BS assignment to users, and bandwidth allocation to minimize the latency in each communication round. This optimization problem turned out to be NP-hard and we proposed a delay-aware greedy search algorithm (DAGSA) to solve it. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art baselines and a certain level of user mobility could improve training performance.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Free Space Optical Information and Power Transfer

Free space optical (FSO) transmission has emerged as a key candidate technology for 6G to expand new spectrum and improve network capacity due to its advantages of large bandwidth, low electromagnetic interference, and high energy efficiency. Resonant beam operating in the infrared band utilizes spatially separated laser cavities to enable safe and mobile high-power energy and high-rate information transmission but is limited by line-of-sight (LOS) channel. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted resonant beam simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system and establish an optical field propagation model to analyze the channel state information (CSI), in which LOS obstruction can be detected sensitively and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transmission can be realized by changing the phased of resonant beam in RIS. Numerical results demonstrate that, apart from the transmission distance, the NLOS performance depends on both the horizontal and vertical positions of RIS. The maximum NLOS energy efficiency can achieve 55% within a transfer distance of 10m, a translation distance of $\pm$4mm, and rotation angle of $\pm$50°.

Legal Decision-making for Highway Automated Driving

Compliance with traffic laws is a fundamental requirement for human drivers on the road, and autonomous vehicles must adhere to traffic laws as well. However, current autonomous vehicles prioritize safety and collision avoidance primarily in their decision-making and planning, which will lead to misunderstandings and distrust from human drivers and may even result in accidents in mixed traffic flow. Therefore, ensuring the compliance of the autonomous driving decision-making system is essential for ensuring the safety of autonomous driving and promoting the widespread adoption of autonomous driving technology. To this end, the paper proposes a trigger-based layered compliance decision-making framework. This framework utilizes the decision intent at the highest level as a signal to activate an online violation monitor that identifies the type of violation committed by the vehicle. Then, a four-layer architecture for compliance decision-making is employed to generate compliantly trajectories. Using this system, autonomous vehicles can detect and correct potential violations in real-time, thereby enhancing safety and building public confidence in autonomous driving technology. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated on the DJI AD4CHE highway dataset under four typical highway scenarios: speed limit, following distance, overtaking, and lane-changing. The results indicate that the proposed method increases the vehicle's overall compliance rate from 13.85% to 84.46%, while reducing the proportion of active violations to 0%, demonstrating its effectiveness.
