A spin-rotation mechanism of Einstein-de Haas effect based on a ferromagnetic disk

Spin-rotation coupling (SRC) is a fundamental phenomenon that connects electronic spins with the rotational motion of a medium. We elucidate the Einstein-de Haas (EdH) effect and its inverse with SRC as the microscopic mechanism using the dynamic spin-lattice equations derived by elasticity theory and Lagrangian formalism. By applying the coupling equations to an iron disk in a magnetic field, we exhibit the transfer of angular momentum and energy between spins and lattice, with or without damping. The timescale of the angular momentum transfer from spins to the entire lattice is estimated by our theory to be on the order of 0.01 ns, for the disk with a radius of 100 nm. Moreover, we discover a linear relationship between the magnetic field strength and the rotation frequency, which is also enhanced by a higher ratio of Young's modulus to Poisson's coefficient. In the presence of damping, we notice that the spin-lattice relaxation time is nearly inversely proportional to the magnetic field. Our explorations will contribute to a better understanding of the EdH effect and provide valuable insights for magneto-mechanical manufacturing.

Fuel-Optimal Trajectory Planning for Lunar Vertical Landing

In this paper, we consider a trajectory planning problem arising from a lunar vertical landing with minimum fuel consumption. The vertical landing requirement is written as a final steering angle constraint, and a nonnegative regularization term is proposed to modify the cost functional. In this way, the final steering angle constraint will be inherently satisfied according to Pontryagin's Minimum Principle. As a result, the modified optimal steering angle has to be determined by solving a transcendental equation. To this end, a transforming procedure is employed, which allows for finding the desired optimal steering angle by a simple bisection method. Consequently, the modified optimal control problem can be solved by the indirect shooting method. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate and verify the developments of the paper.

Robust Analysis of Full-Duplex Two-Way Space Shift Keying With RIS Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted index modulation system schemes are considered a promising technology for sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems, which can enhance various system capabilities such as coverage and reliability. However, obtaining perfect channel state information (CSI) is challenging due to the lack of a radio frequency chain in RIS. In this paper, we investigate the RIS-assisted full-duplex (FD) two-way space shift keying (SSK) system under imperfect CSI, where the signal emissions are augmented by deploying RISs in the vicinity of two FD users. The maximum likelihood detector is utilized to recover the transmit antenna index. With this in mind, we derive closed-form average bit error probability (ABEP) expression based on the Gaussian-Chebyshev quadrature (GCQ) method and provide the upper bound and asymptotic ABEP expressions in the presence of channel estimation errors. To gain more insights, we also derive the outage probability and provide the throughput of the proposed scheme with imperfect CSI. The correctness of the analytical derivation results is confirmed via Monte Carlo simulations. It is demonstrated that increasing the number of elements of RIS can significantly improve the ABEP performance of the FD system over the half-duplex (HD) system. Furthermore, in the high SNR region, the ABEP performance of the FD system is better than that of the HD system.

Tri-Perspective View Decomposition for Geometry-Aware Depth Completion

Depth completion is a vital task for autonomous driving, as it involves reconstructing the precise 3D geometry of a scene from sparse and noisy depth measurements. However, most existing methods either rely only on 2D depth representations or directly incorporate raw 3D point clouds for compensation, which are still insufficient to capture the fine-grained 3D geometry of the scene. To address this challenge, we introduce Tri-Perspective view Decomposition (TPVD), a novel framework that can explicitly model 3D geometry. In particular, (1) TPVD ingeniously decomposes the original point cloud into three 2D views, one of which corresponds to the sparse depth input. (2) We design TPV Fusion to update the 2D TPV features through recurrent 2D-3D-2D aggregation, where a Distance-Aware Spherical Convolution (DASC) is applied. (3) By adaptively choosing TPV affinitive neighbors, the newly proposed Geometric Spatial Propagation Network (GSPN) further improves the geometric consistency. As a result, our TPVD outperforms existing methods on KITTI, NYUv2, and SUN RGBD. Furthermore, we build a novel depth completion dataset named TOFDC, which is acquired by the time-of-flight (TOF) sensor and the color camera on smartphones. Factorized Learning Assisted with Large Language Model for Gloss-free Sign Language Translation

Previous Sign Language Translation (SLT) methods achieve superior performance by relying on gloss annotations. However, labeling high-quality glosses is a labor-intensive task, which limits the further development of SLT. Although some approaches work towards gloss-free SLT through jointly training the visual encoder and translation network, these efforts still suffer from poor performance and inefficient use of the powerful Large Language Model (LLM). Most seriously, we find that directly introducing LLM into SLT will lead to insufficient learning of visual representations as LLM dominates the learning curve. To address these problems, we propose Factorized Learning assisted with Large Language Model (FLa-LLM) for gloss-free SLT. Concretely, we factorize the training process into two stages. In the visual initialing stage, we employ a lightweight translation model after the visual encoder to pre-train the visual encoder. In the LLM fine-tuning stage, we freeze the acquired knowledge in the visual encoder and integrate it with a pre-trained LLM to inspire the LLM's translation potential. This factorized training strategy proves to be highly effective as evidenced by significant improvements achieved across three SLT datasets which are all conducted under the gloss-free setting.

Fairness Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Uplink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access

This paper studies the fair transmission design for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA). IRS is used to establish a good signal propagation environment and enhance the RSMA transmission performance. The fair rate adaption problem is constructed as a max-min optimization problem. To solve the optimization problem, we adopt an alternative optimization (AO) algorithm to optimize the power allocation, beamforming, and decoding order, respectively. A generalized power iteration (GPI) method is proposed to optimize the receive beamforming, which can improve the minimum rate of devices and reduce the optimization complexity. At the base station (BS), a successive group decoding (SGD) algorithm is proposed to tackle the uplink signal estimation, which trades off the fairness and complexity of decoding. At the same time, we also consider robust communication with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), which studies robust optimization by using lower bound expressions on the expected data rates. Extensive numerical results show that the proposed optimization algorithm can significantly improve the performance of fairness. It also provides reliable results for uplink communication with imperfect CSIT.

Spontaneous gap opening and potential excitonic states in an ideal Dirac semimetal Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$

The opening of an energy gap in the electronic structure generally indicates the presence of interactions. In materials with low carrier density and short screening length, long-range Coulomb interaction favors the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs, so-called excitons, opening an excitonic gap at the Fermi level. Excitonic materials host unique phenomenons associated with pair excitations. However, there is still no generally recognized single-crystal material with excitonic order, which is, therefore, awaited in condensed matter physics. Here, we show that excitonic states may exist in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$, which has an almost ideal Dirac-like band structure, with Dirac point located exactly at Fermi level. We find that an energy gap appears at 350 K, and it grows with decreasing temperature. The spontaneous gap opening is absent in a similar material Ta$_2$Ni$_3$Te$_5$. Intriguingly, the gap is destroyed by the potassium deposition on the crystal, likely due to extra-doped carriers. Furthermore, we observe a pair of in-gap flat bands, which is an analog of the impurity states in a superconducting gap. All these observations can be properly explained by an excitonic order, providing Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ as a new and promising candidate realizing excitonic states.

Uncertainty-Aware Prediction and Application in Planning for Autonomous Driving: Definitions, Methods, and Comparison

Autonomous driving systems face the formidable challenge of navigating intricate and dynamic environments with uncertainty. This study presents a unified prediction and planning framework that concurrently models short-term aleatoric uncertainty (SAU), long-term aleatoric uncertainty (LAU), and epistemic uncertainty (EU) to predict and establish a robust foundation for planning in dynamic contexts. The framework uses Gaussian mixture models and deep ensemble methods, to concurrently capture and assess SAU, LAU, and EU, where traditional methods do not integrate these uncertainties simultaneously. Additionally, uncertainty-aware planning is introduced, considering various uncertainties. The study's contributions include comparisons of uncertainty estimations, risk modeling, and planning methods in comparison to existing approaches. The proposed methods were rigorously evaluated using the CommonRoad benchmark and settings with limited perception. These experiments illuminated the advantages and roles of different uncertainty factors in autonomous driving processes. In addition, comparative assessments of various uncertainty modeling strategies underscore the benefits of modeling multiple types of uncertainties, thus enhancing planning accuracy and reliability. The proposed framework facilitates the development of methods for UAP and surpasses existing uncertainty-aware risk models, particularly when considering diverse traffic scenarios. Multiple Classical Noise Mitigation by Multiobjective Robust Quantum Optimal Control

High-quality control is a fundamental requirement for quantum computation, but practically it is often hampered by the presence of various types of noises, which can be static or time-dependent. In many realistic scenarios, multiple noise sources coexist, and their resulting noise effects need be corrected to a sufficient order, posing significant challenges for the design of effective robust control methods. Here, we explore the method of robust quantum optimal control to generally tackle the problem of resisting multiple noises from a complicated noise environment. Specifically, we confine our analysis to unitary noises that can be described by classical noise models. This method employs a gradient-based multiobjective optimization algorithm to maximize the control figure of merit, and meanwhile to minimize the perturbative effects of the noises that are allowed for. To verify its effectiveness, we apply this method to a number of examples, including roubust entangling gate in trapped ion system and robust controlled-Z gate in superconducting qubits, under commonly encountered static and time-dependent noises. Our simulation results reveal that robust optimal control can find smooth, robust pulses that can simultaneously resist several noises and thus achieve high-fidelity gates. Therefore, we expect that this method will find wide applications on current noisy quantum computing devices.

RigNet++: Semantic Assisted Repetitive Image Guided Network for Depth Completion

Depth completion aims to recover dense depth maps from sparse ones, where color images are often used to facilitate this task. Recent depth methods primarily focus on image guided learning frameworks. However, blurry guidance in the image and unclear structure in the depth still impede their performance. To tackle these challenges, we explore a repetitive design in our image guided network to gradually and sufficiently recover depth values. Specifically, the repetition is embodied in both the image guidance branch and depth generation branch. In the former branch, we design a dense repetitive hourglass network (DRHN) to extract discriminative image features of complex environments, which can provide powerful contextual instruction for depth prediction. In the latter branch, we present a repetitive guidance (RG) module based on dynamic convolution, in which an efficient convolution factorization is proposed to reduce the complexity while modeling high-frequency structures progressively. Furthermore, in the semantic guidance branch, we utilize the well-known large vision model, i.e., segment anything (SAM), to supply RG with semantic prior. In addition, we propose a region-aware spatial propagation network (RASPN) for further depth refinement based on the semantic prior constraint. Finally, we collect a new dataset termed TOFDC for the depth completion task, which is acquired by the time-of-flight (TOF) sensor and the color camera on smartphones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on KITTI, NYUv2, Matterport3D, 3D60, VKITTI, and our TOFDC.

Intrinsic supercurrent diode effect in NbSe2 nanobridge

The significance of the superconducting diode effect lies in its potential application as a fundamental component in the development of next-generation superconducting circuit technology. The stringent operating conditions at low temperatures have posed challenges for the conventional semiconductor diode, primarily due to its exceptionally high resistivity. In response to this limitation, various approaches have emerged to achieve the superconducting diode effect, primarily involving the disruption of inversion symmetry in a two-dimensional superconductor through heterostructure fabrication. In this study, we present a direct observation of the supercurrent diode effect in a NbSe2 nanobridge with a length of approximately 15 nm, created using focused helium ion beam fabrication. Nonreciprocal supercurrents were identified, reaching a peak value of approximately 380 $μ$A for each bias polarity at $B_{z}^{max} =\pm 0.2$ mT. Notably, the nonreciprocal supercurrent can be toggled by altering the bias polarity. This discovery of the superconducting diode effect introduces a novel avenue and mechanism through nanofabrication on a superconducting flake, offering fresh perspectives for the development of superconducting devices and potential circuits.

Joint Power Allocation and Beamforming for Active IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network

To boost the secrecy rate (SR) of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network and overcome the double fading effect of the cascaded channels of passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), a novel active IRS-assisted DM system with a power adjusting strategy between transmitter and active IRS is proposed in this paper. Then, a joint optimization of maximizing the SR is cast by alternately optimizing the power allocation (PA) factors, transmit beamforming, receive beamforming, and reflect beamforming at IRS, subject to the power constraint at IRS. To tackle the formulated non-convex optimization problem, a high-performance scheme of maximizing SR based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and Schur complement (Max-SR-SS) is proposed, where the derivative operation are employed to optimize the PA factors, the generalized Rayleigh-Rize theorem is adopted to derive the receive beamforming, and the SCA strategy is utilized to design the transmit beamforming and phase shift matrix of IRS. To reduce the high complexity, a low-complexity scheme, named maximizing SR based on equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) and majorization-minimization (MM) (Max-SR-EM), is developed, where the EAR and MM methods are adopted to derive the amplitude and phase of the IRS phase shift matrix, respectively. In particular, when the receivers are single antenna, a scheme of maximizing SR based on alternating optimization (Max-SR-AO) is proposed, where the PA factors, transmit and reflect beamforming are derived by the fractional programming (FP) and SCA algorithms. Simulation results show that with the same power constraint, the SR gains achieved by the proposed schemes outperform those of the fixed PA and passive IRS schemes.

AltNeRF: Learning Robust Neural Radiance Field via Alternating Depth-Pose Optimization

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have shown promise in generating realistic novel views from sparse scene images. However, existing NeRF approaches often encounter challenges due to the lack of explicit 3D supervision and imprecise camera poses, resulting in suboptimal outcomes. To tackle these issues, we propose AltNeRF -- a novel framework designed to create resilient NeRF representations using self-supervised monocular depth estimation (SMDE) from monocular videos, without relying on known camera poses. SMDE in AltNeRF masterfully learns depth and pose priors to regulate NeRF training. The depth prior enriches NeRF's capacity for precise scene geometry depiction, while the pose prior provides a robust starting point for subsequent pose refinement. Moreover, we introduce an alternating algorithm that harmoniously melds NeRF outputs into SMDE through a consistence-driven mechanism, thus enhancing the integrity of depth priors. This alternation empowers AltNeRF to progressively refine NeRF representations, yielding the synthesis of realistic novel views. Extensive experiments showcase the compelling capabilities of AltNeRF in generating high-fidelity and robust novel views that closely resemble reality.

A Spatial Calibration Method for Robust Cooperative Perception

Cooperative perception is a promising technique for intelligent and connected vehicles through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) cooperation, provided that accurate pose information and relative pose transforms are available. Nevertheless, obtaining precise positioning information often entails high costs associated with navigation systems. {Hence, it is required to calibrate relative pose information for multi-agent cooperative perception.} This paper proposes a simple but effective object association approach named context-based matching (CBM), which identifies inter-agent object correspondences using intra-agent geometrical context. In detail, this method constructs contexts using the relative position of the detected bounding boxes, followed by local context matching and global consensus maximization. The optimal relative pose transform is estimated based on the matched correspondences, followed by cooperative perception fusion. Extensive experiments are conducted on both the simulated and real-world datasets. Even with larger inter-agent localization errors, high object association precision and decimeter-level relative pose calibration accuracy are achieved among the cooperating agents.

Performance Evaluation and Analysis of Thresholding-based Interference Mitigation for Automotive Radar Systems

In automotive radar, time-domain thresholding (TD-TH) and time-frequency domain thresholding (TFD-TH) are crucial techniques underpinning numerous interference mitigation methods. Despite their importance, comprehensive evaluations of these methods in dense traffic scenarios with different types of interference are limited. In this study, we segment automotive radar interference into three distinct categories. Utilizing the in-house traffic scenario and automotive radar simulator, we evaluate interference mitigation methods across multiple metrics: probability of detection, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and phase error involving hundreds of targets and dozens of interfering radars. The numerical results highlight that TFD-TH is more effective than TD-TH, particularly as the density and signal correlation of interfering radars escalate.

Energy-Efficient Wireless Federated Learning via Doubly Adaptive Quantization

Federated learning (FL) has been recognized as a viable distributed learning paradigm for training a machine learning model across distributed clients without uploading raw data. However, FL in wireless networks still faces two major challenges, i.e., large communication overhead and high energy consumption, which are exacerbated by client heterogeneity in dataset sizes and wireless channels. While model quantization is effective for energy reduction, existing works ignore adapting quantization to heterogeneous clients and FL convergence. To address these challenges, this paper develops an energy optimization problem of jointly designing quantization levels, scheduling clients, allocating channels, and controlling computation frequencies (QCCF) in wireless FL. Specifically, we derive an upper bound identifying the influence of client scheduling and quantization errors on FL convergence. Under the longterm convergence constraints and wireless constraints, the problem is established and transformed into an instantaneous problem with Lyapunov optimization. Solving Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, our closed-form solution indicates that the doubly adaptive quantization level rises with the training process and correlates negatively with dataset sizes. Experiment results validate our theoretical results, showing that QCCF consumes less energy with faster convergence compared with state-of-the-art baselines.

Neural-Network-Based Optimal Guidance for Lunar Vertical Landing

This paper addresses an optimal guidance problem concerning the vertical landing of a lunar lander with the objective of minimizing fuel consumption. The vertical landing imposes a final attitude constraint, which is treated as a final control constraint. To handle this constraint, we propose a nonnegative small regularization term to augment the original cost functional. This ensures the satisfaction of the final control constraint in accordance with Pontryagin's Minimum Principle. By leveraging the necessary conditions for optimality, we establish a parameterized system that facilitates the generation of numerous optimal trajectories, which contain the nonlinear mapping from the flight state to the optimal guidance command. Subsequently, a neural network is trained to approximate such mapping. Finally, numerical examples are presented to validate the proposed method.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Transmissive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Transceiver Empowered ISAC System

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver empowered integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system is proposed for future multi-demand terminals. To address interference management, we implement rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), where the common stream is independently designed for the sensing service. We introduce the sensing quality of service (QoS) criteria based on this structure and construct an optimization problem with the sensing QoS criteria as the objective function to optimize the sensing stream precoding matrix and the communication stream precoding matrix. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the formulated problem is a non-convex optimization problem that cannot be solved directly. To tackle the above-mentioned challenging problem, alternating optimization (AO) is utilized to decouple the optimization variables. Specifically, the problem is decoupled into three subproblems about the sensing stream precoding matrix, the communication stream precoding matrix, and the auxiliary variables, which is solved alternatively through AO until the convergence is reached. For solving the problem, successive convex approximation (SCA) is applied to deal with the sum-rate threshold constraints on communications, and difference-of-convex (DC) programming is utilized to solve rank-one non-convex constraints. Numerical simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed scheme in terms of improving the communication and sensing QoS.
