Local-global principles for Galois cohomology

This paper proves local-global principles for Galois cohomology groups over function fields $F$ of curves that are defined over a complete discretely valued field. We show in particular that such principles hold for $H^n(F, Z/mZ(n-1))$, for all $n>1$. This is motivated by work of Kato and others, where such principles were shown in related cases for $n=3$. Using our results in combination with cohomological invariants, we obtain local-global principles for torsors and related algebraic structures over $F$. Our arguments rely on ideas from patching as well as the Bloch-Kato conjecture.

Weierstrass preparation and algebraic invariants

We prove a form of the Weierstrass Preparation Theorem for normal algebraic curves over complete discrete valuation rings. While the more traditional algebraic form of Weierstrass Preparation applies just to the projective line over a base, our version allows more general curves. This result is then used to obtain applications concerning the values of u-invariants, and on the period-index problem for division algebras, over fraction fields of complete two-dimensional rings. Our approach uses patching methods and matrix factorization results that can be viewed as analogs of Cartan's Lemma.

Patching subfields of division algebras

Given a field F, one may ask which finite groups are Galois groups of field extensions E/F such that E is a maximal subfield of a division algebra with center F. This question was originally posed by Schacher, who gave partial results over the field of rational numbers. Using patching, we give a complete characterization of such groups in the case that F is the function field of a curve over a complete discretely valued field with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic zero, as well as results in related cases.

Applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras

This paper provides applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras over function fields of curves over henselian valued fields. In particular, we use a patching approach to reprove and generalize a recent result of Parimala and Suresh on the u-invariant of p-adic function fields, for p odd. The strategy relies on a local-global principle for homogeneous spaces for rational algebraic groups, combined with local computations.

Patching over fields

We develop a new form of patching that is both far-reaching and more elementary than the previous versions that have been used in inverse Galois theory for function fields of curves. A key point of our approach is to work with fields and vector spaces, rather than rings and modules. After presenting a self-contained development of this form of patching, we obtain applications to other structures such as Brauer groups and differential modules.

Reflection Groups and Differential Forms

We study differential forms invariant under a finite reflection group over a field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we prove an analogue of Saito's freeness criterion for invariant differential 1-forms. We also discuss how twisted wedging endows the invariant forms with the structure of a free exterior algebra in certain cases. Some of the results are extended to the case of relative invariants with respect to a linear character.

Jacobians of Reflection Groups

Steinberg showed that when a finite reflection group acts on a real or complex vector space of finite dimension, the Jacobian determinant of a set of basic invariants factors into linear forms which define the reflecting hyperplanes. This result generalizes verbatim to fields whose characteristic is prime to the order of the group. Our main theorem gives a generalization of Steinberg's result for arbitrary fields using a ramification formula of Benson and Crawley-Boevey. As an intermediate result, we show that every finite group which fixes a hyperplane pointwise has a polynomial ring of invariants.
