Twisted crossed products of Banach algebras

Given a locally compact group $G$, a nondegenerate Banach algebra $A$ with a contractive approximate identity, a twisted action $(\alpha, \sigma)$ of $G$ on $A$, and a family $\mathcal{R}$ of uniformly bounded representations of $A$ on Banach spaces, we define the twisted crossed product $F_\mathcal{R}(G,A,\alpha, \sigma)$. When $\mathcal{R}$ consists of contractive representations, we show that $F_\mathcal{R}(G,A,\alpha, \sigma)$ is a Banach algebra with a contractive approximate identity, which can also be characterized by an isometric universal property. As an application, we specialize to the $L^p$-operator algebra setting, defining both the $L^p$-twisted crossed product and the reduced version. Finally, we give a generalization of the so-called Packer-Raeburn trick to the $L^p$-setting, showing that any $L^p$-twisted crossed product is "stably" isometrically isomorphic to an untwisted one.

$L^p$-spectral triples and $p$-quantum compact metric spaces

For $p \in [1, \infty)$, we generalize the concept of classical spectral triples by extending the framework from Hilbert spaces to $L^p$-spaces, and from C*-algebras to $L^p$-operator algebras. In addition, we define an $L^p$-spectral triple to be metric when the state space of the algebra has a $p$-quantum compact metric space structure. Specifically, we construct $L^p$-spectral triples for reduced $L^p$-group algebras of countable discrete groups with proper length functions and also for $L^p$ UHF-algebras of infinite tensor product type, the latter inspired by E. Christensen and C. Ivan's construction of a Dirac operator on AF C*-algebras. We prove that $L^p$-spectral triples associated with $L^p$-group algebras (provided that the length function is of bounded doubling) and those associated with $L^p$ UHF-algebras are always metric.

Spectral Triples on noncommutative solenoids from the standard spectral triples on quantum tori

We address the natural question: as noncommutative solenoids are inductive limits of quantum tori, do the standard spectral triples on quantum tori converge to some spectral triple on noncommutative solenoid for the spectral propinquity? We answer this question by showing that, using appropriate bounded perturbation of the spectral triples on quantum tori, such a spectral triple on noncommutative solenoid can be constructed.

Convergence of inductive sequences of spectral triples for the spectral propinquity

In the context of metric geometry, we introduce a new necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of an inductive sequence of quantum compact metric spaces for the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity, which is a noncommutative analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact metric spaces. This condition is easy to verify in many examples, such as quantum compact metric spaces associated to AF algebras or certain twisted convolution C*-algebras of discrete inductive limit groups. Our condition also implies the convergence of an inductive sequence of spectral triples in the sense of the spectral propinquity, a generalization of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity on quantum compact metric spaces to the space of metric spectral triples. In particular we show the convergence of the state spaces of the underlying C*-algebras as quantum compact metric spaces, and also the convergence of the quantum dynamics induced by the Dirac operators in the spectral triples. We apply these results to new classes of inductive limit of even spectral triples on noncommutative solenoids and Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. Our construction, which involves length functions with bounded doubling, adds geometric information and highlights the structure of these twisted C*-algebras as inductive limits.

Cocycles on Certain Groupoids Associated to $ \mathbb{N}^{k} $-Actions

We consider groupoids constructed from a finite number of commuting local homeomorphisms acting on a compact metric space, and study generalized Ruelle operators and $ C^{\ast} $-algebras associated to these groupoids. We provide a new characterization of $ 1 $-cocycles on these groupoids taking values in a locally compact abelian group, given in terms of $ k $-tuples of continuous functions on the unit space satisfying certain canonical identities. Using this, we develop an extended Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theory for dynamical systems of several commuting operators ($ k $-Ruelle triples and commuting Ruelle operators). Results on KMS states on $ C^{\ast} $-algebras constructed from these groupoids are derived. When the groupoids being studied come from higher-rank graphs, our results recover existence-uniqueness results for KMS states associated to the graphs.

Purely atomic representations of higher-rank graph C*-algebras

We study purely atomic representations of C*-algebras associated to row-finite and source-free higher-rank graphs. We describe when purely atomic representations are unitarily equivalent and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a purely atomic representation to be irreducible in terms of the associated projection valued measure. We also investigate the relationship between purely atomic representations, monic representations and permutative representations, and we describe when a purely atomic representation admits a decomposition consisting of permutative representations.

Spectral triples for higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras

In this note, we present a new way to associate a spectral triple to the noncommutative $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\Lambda)$ of a strongly connected finite higher-rank graph $\Lambda$. We generalize a spectral triple of Consani and Marcolli from Cuntz-Krieger algebras to higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras $C^*(\Lambda)$, and we prove that these spectral triples are intimately connected to the wavelet decomposition of the infinite path space of $\Lambda$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. In particular, we prove that the wavelet decomposition of Farsi et al. describes the eigenspaces of the Dirac operator of this spectral triple.

Monic representations of finite higher-rank graphs

In this paper we define the notion of monic representation for the $C^*$-algebras of finite higher-rank graphs with no sources, and undertake a comprehensive study of them. Monic representations are the representations that, when restricted to the commutative $C^*$-algebra of the continuous functions on the infinite path space, admit a cyclic vector. We link monic representations to the $\Lambda$-semibranching representations previously studied by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer, and also provide a universal representation model for nonnegative monic representations.

Spectral triples and wavelets for higher-rank graphs

In this paper, we present a new way to associate a finitely summable spectral triple to a higher-rank graph $\Lambda$, via the infinite path space $\Lambda^\infty$ of $\Lambda$. Moreover, we prove that this spectral triple has a close connection to the wavelet decomposition of $\Lambda^\infty$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. We first introduce the concept of stationary $k$-Bratteli diagrams, in order to associate a family of ultrametric Cantor sets, and their associated Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples, to a finite, strongly connected higher-rank graph $\Lambda$. We then study the zeta function, abscissa of convergence, and Dixmier trace associated to the Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples of these Cantor sets, and show these spectral triples are $\zeta$-regular in the sense of Pearson and Bellissard. We obtain an integral formula for the Dixmier trace given by integration against a measure $\mu$, and show that $\mu$ is a rescaled version of the measure $M$ on $\Lambda^\infty$ which was introduced by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. Finally, we investigate the eigenspaces of a family of Laplace-Beltrami operators associated to the Dirichlet forms of the spectral triples. We show that these eigenspaces refine the wavelet decomposition of $L^2(\Lambda^\infty, M)$ which was constructed by Farsi et al.

Representations of higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras associated to $\Lambda$-semibranching function systems

In this paper, we discuss a method of constructing separable representations of the $C^*$-algebras associated to strongly connected row-finite $k$-graphs $\Lambda$. We begin by giving an alternative characterization of the $\Lambda$-semibranching function systems introduced in an earlier paper, with an eye towards constructing such representations that are faithful. Our new characterization allows us to more easily check that examples satisfy certain necessary and sufficient conditions. We present a variety of new examples relying on this characterization. We then use some of these methods and a direct limit procedure to construct a faithful separable representation for any row-finite source-free $k$-graph.

Separable representations of higher-rank graphs

In this monograph we undertake a comprehensive study of separable representations (as well as their unitary equivalence classes) of $C^*$-algebras associated to strongly connected finite $k$-graphs $\Lambda$. We begin with the representations associated to the $\Lambda$-semibranching function systems introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in \cite{FGKP}, by giving an alternative characterization of these systems which is more easily verified in examples. We present a variety of such examples, one of which we use to construct a new faithful separable representation of any row-finite source-free $k$-graph. Next, we analyze the monic representations of $C^*$-algebras of finite $k$-graphs. We completely characterize these representations, generalizing results of Dutkay and Jorgensen \cite{dutkay-jorgensen-monic} and Bezuglyi and Jorgensen \cite{bezuglyi-jorgensen} for Cuntz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras respectively. We also describe a universal representation for non-negative monic representations of finite, strongly connected $k$-graphs. To conclude, we characterize the purely atomic and permutative representations of $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras, and discuss the relationship between these representations and the classes of representations introduced earlier.

Wavelets and spectral triples for higher-rank graphs

In this paper, we present two new ways to associate a spectral triple to a higher-rank graph $\Lambda$. Moreover, we prove that these spectral triples are intimately connected to the wavelet decomposition of the infinite path space of $\Lambda$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. We first introduce the concept of stationary $k$-Bratteli diagrams, to associate a family of ultrametric Cantor sets to a finite, strongly connected higher-rank graph $\Lambda$. Then we show that under mild hypotheses, the Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples of such Cantor sets have a regular $\zeta$-function, whose abscissa of convergence agrees with the Hausdorff dimension of the Cantor set, and that the measure $\mu$ induced by the associated Dixmier trace agrees with the measure $M$ on the infinite path space $\Lambda^\infty$ of $\Lambda$ which was introduced by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. Furthermore, we prove that $\mu = M$ is a rescaled version of the Hausdorff measure of the ultrametric Cantor set. From work of Julien and Savinien, we know that for $\zeta$-regular Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples, the eigenspaces of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator constitute an orthogonal decomposition of $L^2(\Lambda^\infty, \mu)$; we show that this orthogonal decomposition refines the wavelet decomposition of Farsi et al. In addition, we generalize a spectral triple of Consani and Marcolli from Cuntz-Krieger algebras to higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras, and prove that the wavelet decomposition of Farsi et al.~describes the eigenspaces of its Dirac operator.

Wavelets and spectral triples for fractal representations of Cuntz algebras

In this article we provide an identification between the wavelet decompositions of certain fractal representations of $C^*-$algebras of directed graphs of M. Marcolli and A. Paolucci, and the eigenspaces of Laplacians associated to spectral triples constructed from Cantor fractal sets that are the infinite path spaces of Bratteli diagrams associated to the representations, with a particular emphasis on wavelets for representations of $\mathcal{O}_D$. In particular, in this setting we use results of J. Pearson and J. Bellissard, and A. Julien and J. Savinien, to construct first the spectral triple and then the Laplace Beltrami operator on the associated Cantor set. We then prove that in certain cases, the orthogonal wavelet decomposition and the decomposition via orthogonal eigenspaces match up precisely. We give several explicit examples, including an example related to a Sierpinski fractal, and compute in detail all the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenspaces of the Laplace Beltrami operators for the equal weight case for representations of Cuntz algebras, and in the uneven weight case for certain representations of $\mathcal{O}_2$, and show how the eigenspaces and wavelet subspaces at different levels are related.

Noncommutative Solenoids and the Gromov-Hausdorff Propinquity

We prove that noncommutative solenoids are limits, in the sense of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity, of quantum tori. From this observation, we prove that noncommutative solenoids can be approximated by finite dimensional quantum compact metric spaces, and that they form a continuous family of quantum compact metric spaces over the space of multipliers of the solenoid, properly metrized.

Wavelets and graph $C^*$-algebras

Here we give an overview on the connection between wavelet theory and representation theory for graph $C^{\ast}$-algebras, including the higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras of A. Kumjian and D. Pask. Many authors have studied different aspects of this connection over the last 20 years, and we begin this paper with a survey of the known results. We then discuss several new ways to generalize these results and obtain wavelets associated to representations of higher-rank graphs. In \cite{FGKP}, we introduced the "cubical wavelets" associated to a higher-rank graph. Here, we generalize this construction to build wavelets of arbitrary shapes. We also present a different but related construction of wavelets associated to a higher-rank graph, which we anticipate will have applications to traffic analysis on networks. Finally, we generalize the spectral graph wavelets of \cite{hammond} to higher-rank graphs, giving a third family of wavelets associated to higher-rank graphs.

Separable representations, KMS states, and wavelets for higher-rank graphs

Let $\Lambda$ be a strongly connected, finite higher-rank graph. In this paper, we construct representations of $C^*(\Lambda)$ on certain separable Hilbert spaces of the form $L^2(X,\mu)$, by introducing the notion of a $\Lambda$-semibranching function system (a generalization of the semibranching function systems studied by Marcolli and Paolucci). In particular, when $\Lambda$ is aperiodic, we obtain a faithful representation of $C^*(\Lambda)$ on $L^2(\Lambda^\infty, M)$, where $M$ is the Perron-Frobenius probability measure on the infinite path space $\Lambda^\infty$ recently studied by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. We also show how a $\Lambda$-semibranching function system gives rise to KMS states for $C^*(\Lambda)$. For the higher-rank graphs of Robertson and Steger, we also obtain a representation of $C^*(\Lambda)$ on $L^2(X, \mu)$, where $X$ is a fractal subspace of $[0,1]$ by embedding $\Lambda^{\infty}$ into $[0,1]$ as a fractal subset $X$ of $[0,1]$. In this latter case we additionally show that there exists a KMS state for $C^*(\Lambda)$ whose inverse temperature is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of $X$. Finally, we construct a wavelet system for $L^2(\Lambda^\infty, M)$ by generalizing the work of Marcolli and Paolucci from graphs to higher-rank graphs.

Explicit Construction of Equivalence Bimodules between Noncommutative Solenoids

Let $p\in \mathbb{N}$ be prime, and let $\theta$ be irrational. The authors have previously shown that the noncommutative $p$-solenoid corresponding to the multiplier of the group $\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{1}{p}\right]\right)^2$ parametrized by $\alpha=(\theta+1, (\theta+1)/p,\cdots, (\theta+1)/p^j,\cdots )$ is strongly Morita equivalent to the noncommutative solenoid on $\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{1}{p}\right]\right)^2$ coming from the multiplier $\beta= (1-\frac{\theta+1}{\theta},1-\frac{\theta+1}{p\theta}, \cdots, 1-\frac{\theta+1}{p^j\theta}, \cdots )$ . The method used a construction of Rieffel referred to as the "Heisenberg bimodule" in which the two noncommutative solenoid corresponds to two different twisted group algebras associated to dual lattices in $(\mathbb Q_p\times \mathbb R)^2.$ In this paper, we make three additional observations: first, that at each stage, the subalgebra given by the irrational rotation algebra corresponding to $\alpha_{2j}=(\theta+1)/p^{2j}$ is strongly Morita equivalent to the irrational rotation algebra corresponding to the irrational rotation algebra corresponding to $\beta_{2j}= 1-\frac{\theta+1}{p^{2j}\theta}$ by a different construction of Rieffel, secondly, that that Rieffel's Heisenberg module relating the two non commutative solenoids can be constructed as the closure of a nested sequence of function spaces associated to a multiresolution analysis for a $p$-adic wavelet, and finally, at each stage, the equivalence bimodule between $A_{\alpha_{2j}}$ and $A_{\beta_{2j}}$ can be identified with the subequivalence bimodules arising from the $p$-adic MRA. Aside from its instrinsic interest, we believe this construction will guide us in our efforts to show that certain necessary conditions for two noncommutative solenoids to be strongly Morita equivalent are also sufficient.

Quantum Heisenberg Manifolds as Twisted Groupoid $C^*$-Algebras

The quantum Heisenberg manifolds are noncommutive manifolds constructed by M. Rieffel as strict deformation quantizations of Heisenberg manifolds and have been studied by various authors. Rieffel constructed the quantum Heisenberg manifolds as the generalized fixed-point algebras of certain crossed product $C^*$-algebras, and they also can be realized as crossed products of $C(\mathbb{T}^2)$ by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules in the sense of Abadie et al. In this paper, we describe how the quantum Heisenberg manifolds can also be realized as twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
