The embedded deformation problem for monomial ideals

This article is concerned with homological properties of local or graded rings whose defining relations are monomials on some regular sequence. The main result of the article positively answers a question of Avramov for such a ring $R$. More precisely, we establish that an embedded deformation of $R$ corresponds exactly to a degree two central element in the homotopy Lie algebra of $R$, as well as a free summand of the conormal module of $R$. A major input in the proof is an analysis of cohomological support varieties. Other main results include establishing a lower bound for the dimension of the cohomological support variety of any complex over such rings, and classifying all possible subvarieties of affine $n$-space that are the cohomological support of rings defined by $n$ monomial relations where $n$ is five or less.

Classifying thick subcategories over a Koszul complex via the curved BGG correspondence

In this work we classify the thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of dg modules over a Koszul complex on any list of elements in a regular ring. This simultaneously recovers a theorem of Stevenson when the list of elements is a regular sequence and the classification of thick subcategories for an exterior algebra over a field (via the BGG correspondence). One of the major ingredients is a classification of thick tensor submodules of perfect curved dg modules over a commutative noetherian graded ring concentrated in even degrees, recovering a theorem of Hopkins and Neeman. We give several consequences of the classification result over a Koszul complex, one being that the lattice of thick subcategories of the bounded derived category is fixed by Grothendieck duality.

Lower bounds on Loewy lengths of modules of finite projective dimension

This article is concerned with nonzero modules of finite length and finite projective dimension over a local ring. We show the Loewy length of such a module is larger than the regularity of the ring whenever the ring is strict Cohen-Macaulay, establishing a conjecture of Corso--Huneke--Polini--Ulrich for such rings. In fact, we show the stronger result that the Loewy length of a nonzero module of finite flat dimension is at least the regularity for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings, which significantly strengthens a theorem of Avramov--Buchweitz--Iyengar--Miller. As an application we simultaneously verify a Lech-like conjecture, comparing generalized Loewy length along flat local extensions, and a conjecture of Hanes for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings. Finally, we also give notable improvements to known lower bounds for Loewy lengths without the strict Cohen-Macaulay assumption. The strongest general bounds we achieve are over complete intersection rings.

Relations between Poincar\'e series for quasi-complete intersection homomorphisms

In this article we study base change of Poincar\'e series along a quasi-complete intersection homomorphism $\varphi\colon Q \to R$, where $Q$ is a local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$. In particular, we give a precise relationship between the Poincar\'e series $\mathrm{P}^Q_M(t)$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $M$ to $\mathrm{P}^R_M(t)$ when the kernel of $\varphi$ is contained in $\mathfrak{m}\,\mathrm{ann}_Q(M)$. This generalizes a classical result of Shamash for complete intersection homomorphisms. Our proof goes through base change formulas for Poincar\'e series under the map of dg algebras $Q\to E$, with $E$ the Koszul complex on a minimal set of generators for the kernel of $\varphi.$

Koszul homomorphisms and universal resolutions in local algebra

We define a local homomorphism $(Q,k)\to (R,\ell)$ to be Koszul if its derived fiber $R \otimes^{\mathsf{L}}_Q k$ is formal, and if $\operatorname{Tor}^Q(R,k)$ is Koszul in the classical sense. This recovers the classical definition when $Q$ is a field, and more generally includes all flat deformations of Koszul algebras. The non-flat case is significantly more interesting, and there is no need for examples to be quadratic: all complete intersection and all Golod quotients are Koszul homomorphisms. We show that the class of Koszul homomorphisms enjoys excellent homological properties, and we give many more examples, especially various monomial and Gorenstein examples. We then study Koszul homomorphisms from the perspective of $\mathrm{A}_\infty$-structures on resolutions. We use this machinery to construct universal free resolutions of $R$-modules by generalizing a classical construction of Priddy. The resulting (infinite) free resolution of an $R$-module $M$ is often minimal, and can be described by a finite amount of data whenever $M$ and $R$ have finite projective dimension over $Q$. Our construction simultaneously recovers the resolutions of Shamash and Eisenbud over a complete intersection ring, and the bar resolutions of Iyengar and Burke over a Golod ring, and produces analogous resolutions for various other classes of local rings.

High Frobenius pushforwards generate the bounded derived category

This work concerns generators for the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves over a noetherian scheme $X$ of prime characteristic. The main result is that when the Frobenius map on $X$ is finite, for any compact generator $G$ of $\mathsf{D}(X)$ the Frobenius pushforward $F ^e_*G$ generates the bounded derived category whenever $p^e$ is larger than the codepth of $X$, an invariant that is a measure of the singularity of $X$. The conclusion holds for all positive integers $e$ when $X$ is locally complete intersection. The question of when one can take $G=\mathcal{O}_X$ is also investigated. For smooth projective complete intersections it reduces to a question of generation of the Kuznetsov component.

Bounds on cohomological support varieties

Over a local ring $R$, the theory of cohomological support varieties attaches to any bounded complex $M$ of finitely generated $R$-modules an algebraic variety $V_R(M)$ that encodes homological properties of $M$. We give lower bounds for the dimension of $V_R(M)$ in terms of classical invariants of $R$. In particular, when $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay and not complete intersection we find that there are always varieties that cannot be realized as the cohomological support of any complex. When $M$ has finite projective dimension, we also give an upper bound for $ \dim V_R(M)$ in terms of the dimension of the radical of the homotopy Lie algebra of $R$. This leads to an improvement of a bound due to Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar, and Miller on the Loewy lengths of finite free complexes. Finally, we completely classify the varieties that can occur as the cohomological support of a complex over a Golod ring.

Resolutions of differential operators of low order for an isolated hypersurface singularity

In this paper we develop a new approach for studying differential operators of an isolated singularity graded hypersurface ring $R$ defining a surface in affine three-space over a field of characteristic zero. With this method, we construct an explicit minimal generating set for the modules of differential operators of order two and three, as well as their minimal free resolutions; this expands results of Bernstein, Gel'fand, and Gel'fand and of Vigu\'e. Our construction relies, in part, on a description of these modules that we derive in the singularity category of $R$. Namely, we build explicit matrix factorizations starting from that of the residue field.

Cohomological supports of tensor products of modules over commutative rings

This works concerns cohomological support varieties of modules over commutative local rings. The main result is that the support of a derived tensor product of a pair of differential graded modules over a Koszul complex is the join of the supports of the modules. This generalizes, and gives another proof of, a result of Dao and the third author dealing with Tor-independent modules over complete intersection rings. The result for Koszul complexes has a broader applicability, including to exterior algebras over local rings.

Cohomological jump loci and duality in local algebra

In this article a higher order support theory, called the cohomological jump loci, is introduced and studied for dg modules over a Koszul extension of a local dg algebra. The generality of this setting applies to dg modules over local complete intersection rings, exterior algebras and certain group algebras in prime characteristic. This family of varieties generalizes the well-studied support varieties in each of these contexts. We show that cohomological jump loci satisfy several interesting properties, including being closed under (Grothendieck) duality. The main application of this support theory is that over a local ring the homological invariants of Betti degree and complexity are preserved under duality for finitely generated modules having finite complete intersection dimension.

The homotopy Lie algebra of a Tor-independent tensor product

In this article we investigate a pair of surjective local ring maps $S_1\leftarrow R\to S_2$ and their relation to the canonical projection $R\to S_1\otimes_R S_2$, where $S_1,S_2$ are Tor-independent over $R$. Our main result asserts a structural connection between the homotopy Lie algebra of $S:=S_1\otimes_R S_2$, denoted $\pi(S)$, in terms of those of $R,S_1$ and $S_2$. Namely, $\pi(S)$ is the pullback of (adjusted) Lie algebras along the maps $\pi(S_i)\to \pi(R)$ in various cases, including when the maps above have residual characteristic zero. Consequences to the main theorem include structural results on Andr\'{e}-Quillen cohomology, stable cohomology, and Tor algebras, as well as an equality relating the Poincar\'{e} series of the common residue field of $R,S_1,S_2$ and $S$.

A comparison of dg algebra resolutions with prime residual characteristic

In this article we fix a prime integer $p$ and compare certain dg algebra resolutions over a local ring whose residue field has characteristic $p$. Namely, we show that given a closed surjective map between such algebras there is a precise description for the minimal model in terms of the acyclic closure, and that the latter is a quotient of the former. A first application is that the homotopy Lie algebra of a closed surjective map with residual characteristic $p$ is abelian. We also use these calculations to show deviations enjoy rigidity properties which detect the (quasi-)complete intersection property.

Exceptional complete intersection maps of local rings

This work concerns surjective maps $\varphi\colon R\to S$ of commutative noetherian local rings with kernel generated by a regular sequence that is part of a minimal generating set for the maximal ideal of $R$. The main result provides criteria for detecting such exceptional complete intersection maps in terms of the lattices of thick subcategories of the derived category of complexes of finite length homology. A key input is a characterization of such maps in terms of the truncated Atiyah class of $\varphi$.

Support varieties over skew complete intersections via derived braided Hochschild cohomology

In this article we study a theory of support varieties over a skew complete intersection $R$, i.e. a skew polynomial ring modulo an ideal generated by a sequence of regular normal elements. We compute the derived braided Hochschild cohomology of $R$ relative to the skew polynomial ring and show its action on $\mathrm{Ext}_R(M,N)$ is noetherian for finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and $N$ respecting the braiding of $R$. When the parameters defining the skew polynomial ring are roots of unity we use this action to define a support theory. In this setting applications include a proof of the Generalized Auslander-Reiten Conjecture and that $R$ possesses symmetric complexity.

A partial converse ghost lemma for the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring

In this article a condition is given to detect the containment among thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, for a commutative noetherian ring $R$ and complexes of $R$-modules with finitely generated homology $M$ and $N$, we show $N$ is in the thick subcategory generated by $M$ if and only if the ghost index of $N_\mathfrak{p}$ with respect to $M_\mathfrak{p}$ is finite for each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $R$. To do so, we establish a "converse coghost lemma" for the bounded derived category of a non-negatively graded DG algebra with noetherian homology.

Constructing non-proxy small test modules for the complete intersection property

A local ring $R$ is regular if and only if every finitely generated $R$-module has finite projective dimension. Moreover, the residue field $k$ is a test module: $R$ is regular if and only if $k$ has finite projective dimension. This characterization can be extended to the bounded derived category $\mathsf{D}^f(R)$, which contains only small objects if and only if $R$ is regular. Recent results of Pollitz, completing work initiated by Dwyer-Greenlees-Iyengar, yield an analogous characterization for complete intersections: $R$ is a complete intersection if and only if every object in $\mathsf{D}^f(R)$ is proxy small. In this paper, we study a return to the world of $R$-modules, and search for finitely generated $R$-modules that are not proxy small whenever $R$ is not a complete intersection. We give an algorithm to construct such modules in certain settings, including over equipresented rings and Stanley-Reisner rings.

Locally complete intersection maps and the proxy small property

It is proved that a map $\varphi\colon R\to S$ of commutative noetherian rings that is essentially of finite type and flat is locally complete intersection if and only $S$ is proxy small as a bimodule. This means that the thick subcategory generated by $S$ as a module over the enveloping algebra $S\otimes_RS$ contains a perfect complex supported fully on the diagonal ideal. This is in the spirit of the classical result that $\varphi$ is smooth if and only if $S$ is small as a bimodule, that is to say, it is itself equivalent to a perfect complex. The geometric analogue, dealing with maps between schemes, is also established. Applications include simpler proofs of factorization theorems for locally complete intersection maps.

Duality and symmetry of complexity over complete intersections via exterior homology

We study homological properties of a locally complete intersection ring by importing facts from homological algebra over exterior algebras. One application is showing that the thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of a locally complete intersection ring are self-dual under Grothendieck duality. This was proved by Stevenson when the ring is a quotient of a regular ring modulo a regular sequence; we offer two independent proofs in the more general setting. Second, we use these techniques to supply new proofs that complete intersections possess symmetry of complexity.
