This paper studies the behavior of dynamical systems in non-compact spaces, specifically focusing on the concepts of global attractors and shadowing. Let $K$ be a compact global attractor. We show that the shadowing property holds in certain types of dynamical systems in non-compact spaces if and only if $K$ is trivial.
In this paper we apply techniques from nonstandard analysis to study expansive dynamical systems. Among other results, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for an expansive homeomorphism on a compact metric space to admit doubly-asymptotic points in terms of the decay of expansivity constants of the powers of the system.
We study the dynamics of Topologically Anosov homeomorphisms of non compact surfaces. In the case of surfaces of genus zero and finite type, we classify them. We prove that if $f:S \to S$, is a Topologically Anosov homeomorphism where $S$ is a non-compact surface of genus zero and finite type, then $S= \R ^ 2$ and $f$ is conjugate to a homothety or reverse homothety (depending on wether $f$ preserves or reverses orientation). A weaker version of this result was conjectured in a previous work.
A diffeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ in the plane is Anosov if it has a hyperbolic splitting at every point of the plane. The two known topological conjugacy classes of such diffeomorphisms are linear hyperbolic automorphisms and translations (the existence of Anosov structures for plane translations was originally shown by W. White). P. Mendes conjectured that these are the only topological conjugacy classes for Anosov diffeomorphisms in the plane. We prove that this claim holds when the Anosov diffeomorphism is the time-one map of a flow, via a theorem about foliations invariant under a time one map.
Transitivity, the existence of periodic points and positive topological entropy can be used to characterize complexity in dynamical systems. It is known that for graphs that are not trees, for every $\varepsilon>0,$ there exist (complicate) totally transitive maps (then with cofinite set of periods) such that the topological entropy is smaller than $\varepsilon$ (simplicity). First we will show by means of three examples that for any graph that is not a tree the relatively simple maps (with small entropy) which are totally transitive (and hence robustly complicate) can be constructed so that the set of periods is also relatively simple. To numerically measure the complexity of the set of periods we introduce a notion of a $\textit{boundary of cofiniteness}$. Larger boundary of cofiniteness means simpler set of periods. With the help of the notion of boundary of cofiniteness we can state precisely what do we mean by extending the entropy simplicity result to the set of periods: $\textit{there exist relatively simple maps such that the boundary of cofiniteness is arbitrarily large (simplicity) which are totally transitive (and hence robustly complicate)}$. Moreover, we will show that, the above statement holds for arbitrary continuous degree one circle maps.
This paper deals with classifying the dynamics of {\it Topologically Anosov} plane homeomorphisms. We prove that a Topologically Anosov homeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ is conjugate to a homothety if it is the time one map of a flow. We also obtain results for the cases when the nonwandering set of $f$ reduces to a fixed point, or if there exists an open, connected, simply connected proper subset $U$ such that $U \subset \mathrm{Int}(\overline {f(U)})$, and such that $ \cup_{n\geq 0} f^n (U)= \mathbb{R}^2$. In the general case, we prove a structure theorem for the $α$-limits of orbits with empty $ω$-limit (or the $ω$-limits of orbits with empty $α$-limit), and we show that any basin of attraction (or repulsion) must be unbounded.
In a non-compact setting, the notion of hyperbolicity, and the associated structure of stable and unstable manifolds (for unbounded orbits), is highly dependent on the choice of metric used to define it. We consider the simplest version of this, the analogue for the plane of Anosov diffeomorphisms, studied earlier by W. White and P. Mendes. The two known topological conjugacy classes of such diffeomorphisms are linear hyperbolic automorphisms and translations. We show that if the structure of stable and unstable manifolds is required to be preserved by these conjugacies, the number of distinct equivalence classes of Anosov diffeomorphisms in the plane becomes infinite.
This article tackles the problem of the classification of expansive homeomorphisms of the plane. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a homeomorphism to be conjugate to a linear hyperbolic automorphism will be presented. The techniques involve topological and metric aspects of the plane. The use of a Lyapunov metric function which defines the same topology as the one induced by the usual metric but that, in general, is not equivalent to it is an example of such techniques. The discovery of a hypothesis about the behavior of Lyapunov functions at infinity allows us to generalize some results that are valid in the compact context. Additional local properties allow us to obtain another classification theorem.
The aim of this work is to describe the set of fixed point free homeomorphisms of the plane under certain expansive conditions.
