Thermodynamic instability of rotating black holes

We show that the quasi-Euclidean sections of various rotating black holes in different dimensions possess at least one non-conformal negative mode when thermodynamic instabilities are expected. The boundary conditions of fixed induced metric correspond to the partition function of the grand-canonical ensemble. Indeed, in the asymptotically flat cases, we find that a negative mode persists even if the specific heat at constant angular momenta is positive, since the stability in this ensemble also requires the positivity of the isothermal momentum of inertia. We focus in particular on Kerr black holes, on Myers-Perry black holes in five and six dimensions, and on the Emparan-Reall black ring solution. We go on further to consider the richer case of the asymptotically AdS Kerr black hole in four dimensions, where thermodynamic stability is expected for a large enough cosmological constant. The results are consistent with previous findings in the non-rotation limit and support the use of quasi-Euclidean instantons to construct gravitational partition functions.

Kerr-CFT and gravitational perturbations

Motivated by the Kerr-CFT conjecture, we investigate perturbations of the near-horizon extreme Kerr spacetime. The Teukolsky equation for a massless field of arbitrary spin is solved. Solutions fall into two classes: normal modes and traveling waves. Imposing suitable (outgoing) boundary conditions, we find that there are no unstable modes. The explicit form of metric perturbations is obtained using the Hertz potential formalism, and compared with the Kerr-CFT boundary conditions. The energy and angular momentum associated with scalar field and gravitational normal modes are calculated. The energy is positive in all cases. The behaviour of second order perturbations is discussed.

Negative modes and the thermodynamics of Reissner-Nordström black holes

We analyse the problem of negative modes of the Euclidean section of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in four dimensions. We find analytically that a negative mode disappears when the specific heat at constant charge becomes positive. The sector of perturbations analysed here is included in the canonical partition function of the magnetically charged black hole. The result obeys the usual rule that the partition function is only well-defined when there is local thermodynamical equilibrium. We point out the difficulty in quantising Einstein-Maxwell theory, where the so-called conformal factor problem is considerably more intricate. Our method, inspired by hep-th/0608001, allows us to decouple the divergent gauge volume and treat the metric perturbations sector in a gauge-invariant way.
