Topological building blocks of nonequilibrium response

Nonequilibrium systems can exploit energy to amplify their sensitivity to external stimuli, allowing them to be harnessed for a variety of functions in both engineered devices and living organisms. An assortment of theoretical results capture different facets of this nonequilibrium amplification, including fluctuation-response relations as well as bounds and constraints that limit the potential behavior. Here, we take a broader perspective, aiming for a systematic characterization of the full range of possible response behaviors. For a wide class of nonequilibrium dynamics, we identify a collection of optimally sensitive models whose behavior is determined by the topology of the state space. We further conjecture that every response can be written as a convex combination of these optimal models, thereby structuring the entire space of responses. We use this geometric perspective to put sensitivity limits on nonmonotonic biochemical input-output functions, and identify all optimal kinetic schemes for the unordered binding of molecules among three sites.

The Energy Cost of Controlling Mesoscopic Quantum Systems

We determine the minimum energy required to control the evolution of any mesoscopic quantum system in the presence of arbitrary Markovian noise processes. This result provides the mesoscopic equivalent of the fundamental cost of refrigeration, sets the minimum power consumption of mesoscopic devices that operate out of equilibrium, and allows one to calculate the efficiency of any control protocol, whether it be open-loop or feedback control. As examples we calculate the energy cost of maintaining a qubit in the ground state, the efficiency of resolved-sideband cooling of nano-mechanical resonators, and discuss the energy cost of quantum information processing.

An illustrative example of the relationship between dissipation and relative entropy

Kawai, Parrondo, and Van den Broeck [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 080602 (2007)] have recently established a quantitative relationship between dissipated work and a microscopic, information-theoretic measure of irreversibility. We illustrate this result using the exactly solvable system of a Brownian particle in a dragged harmonic trap.

Directed flow in non-adiabatic stochastic pumps

We analyze the operation of a molecular machine driven by the non-adiabatic variation of external parameters. We derive a formula for the integrated flow from one configuration to another, obtain a "no-pumping theorem" for cyclic processes with thermally activated transitions, and show that in the adiabatic limit the pumped current is given by a geometric expression.

Comparison of work fluctuation relations

We compare two predictions regarding the microscopic fluctuations of a system that is driven away from equilibrium: one due to Crooks [J. Stat. Phys. 90, 1481 (1998)] which has gained recent attention in the context of nonequilibrium work and fluctuation theorems, and an earlier, analogous result obtained by Bochkov and Kuzovlev [Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 72(1), 238247 (1977)]. Both results quantify irreversible behavior by comparing probabilities of observing particular microscopic trajectories during thermodynamic processes related by time-reversal, and both are expressed in terms of the work performed when driving the system away from equilibrium. By deriving these two predictions within a single, Hamiltonian framework, we clarify the precise relationship between them, and discuss how the different definitions of work used by the two sets of authors gives rise to different physical interpretations. We then obtain a extended fluctuation relation that contains both the Crooks and the Bochkov-Kuzovlev results as special cases.
