3D Einstein action from 6D Kodaira-Spencer gravity

In view of embedding 3D gravity into topological string theory, we show that the dimensional reduction of 6D Kodaira-Spencer gravity on $\text{AdS}_3\times S^3$, i.e. the low-energy description of twisted holography, contains a subsector that coincides with the action of chiral 3D gravity on $\text{AdS}_3$. Furthermore, we show that the full 3D Einstein action is obtained as the reduction of two independent complex-conjugate copies of 6D Kodaira-Spencer gravity. We perform the dimensional reduction explicitly at the level of the classical actions, extending our previous work that related the equations of motion of the two theories. Our reduction procedure is based on a novel rewriting of the non-local 6D Kodaira-Spencer action as a local 6D holomorphic Chern-Simons action for the gauge group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, valid within a subsector of complex structure deformations that we identify. Our results provide a necessary step toward embedding the Euclidean path integral of 3D gravity into topological string theory.

Complexity and the Hilbert space dimension of 3D gravity

A central problem in formulating a theory of quantum gravity is to determine the size and structure of the Hilbert space of black holes. Here we use a quantum dynamical Krylov complexity approach to calculate the Hilbert space dimension of a black hole in 2+1-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space. We achieve this by obtaining the spread of an initial thermofield double state over the Krylov basis. The associated Lanczos coefficients match those for chaotic motion on the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ group. By including non-perturbative effects in the path integral, which computes coarse-grained ensemble averages, we find that the complexity saturates at late times. The saturation value is given by the exponential of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Our results introduce a new way to compute the Hilbert space dimension of complex interacting systems from the saturating value of spread complexity.

Topological Einstein gravity as Kodaira-Spencer gravity

As a contribution towards quantizing three-dimensional gravity, we show at the classical level that Euclidean three-dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant is uplifted to the $SU(2)$-invariant sector of Kodaira-Spencer gravity on a Calabi-Yau three-fold. Kodaira-Spencer gravity appears in the target space description of the B-model topological string theory and describes deformations of a complex structure. We prove that given a reference solution of Einstein gravity in the first-order formulation, a second off-shell configuration uplifts to a unique complex structure deformation in six dimensions. If the configuration satisfies Einstein's equations, the complex structure deformation is integrable, i.e. a solution of Kodaira-Spencer gravity. We demonstrate the uplift explicitly for Ba\~nados solutions. Our construction embeds three-dimensional gravity into topological string theory and AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ duality into twisted holography.

Non-Locality induces Isometry and Factorisation in Holography

In holography, two manifestations of the black hole information paradox are given by the non-isometric nature of the bulk-boundary map and by the factorisation puzzle. By considering time-shifted microstates of the eternal black hole, we demonstrate that both these puzzles may be simultaneously resolved by taking into account non-local quantum corrections that correspond to wormholes arising from state averaging. This is achieved by showing, using a resolvent technique, that the resulting Hilbert space for an eternal black hole in Anti-de Sitter space is finite-dimensional with a discrete energy spectrum. The latter gives rise to a transition to a type I von Neumann algebra.

Discrete JT gravity as an Ising model

Inspired by the program of discrete holography, we show that Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity on a hyperbolic tiling of Euclidean AdS$_2$ gives rise to an Ising model on the dual lattice, subject to a topological constraint. The Ising model involves an asymptotic boundary condition with spins pointing opposite to the magnetic field. The topological constraint enforces a single domain wall between the spins of opposite direction, with the topology of a circle. The resolvent of JT gravity is related to the free energy of this Ising model, and the classical limit of JT gravity corresponds to the Ising low-temperature limit. We study this Ising model through a Monte Carlo approach and a mean-field approximation. For finite truncations of the infinite hyperbolic lattice, the map between both theories is only valid in a regime in which the domain wall has a finite size. For the extremal cases of large positive or negative coupling, the domain wall either shrinks to zero or touches the boundary of the lattice. This behavior is confirmed by the mean-field analysis. We expect that our results may be used as a starting point for establishing a holographic matrix model duality for discretized gravity.

Towards Explicit Discrete Holography: Aperiodic Spin Chains from Hyperbolic Tilings

We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincar\'e disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are studied by using strong disorder renormalization group techniques, which provide a tensor network construction for the ground state of this spin chain. This can be regarded as discrete bulk reconstruction. Moreover we compute the entanglement entropy in this setup in two different ways: a discretization of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and a generalization of the standard computation for the boundary aperiodic Hamiltonian. For both approaches, a logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy in the subsystem size is identified. The coefficients, i.e. the effective central charges, depend on the bulk discretization parameters in both cases, albeit in a different way.
