Sets of nice recurrence are partition regular

A set of positive integers $R$ is called a set of nice recurrence if for any measure preserving system $(X,\mu,T)$, for all measurable $A\subseteq X$, and each $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $n\in R$ such that $\mu(A\cap T^{-n}A)\geqslant \mu(A)^2 - \varepsilon$. Answering a long-standing question of Bergelson, we show that sets of nice recurrence have the following Ramsey property: any finite colouring of a set of nice recurrence admits a monochromatic set of nice recurrence.

Counting solutions to the quadratic determinant equation

Given $h, N \in \mathbb{N}$ satisfying $1 \leqslant h \leqslant N^2$, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions to the equation $x_1 x_2 - x_3 x_4 = h$ with $x_1, \ldots, x_4 \in [-N,N] \cap \mathbb{Z}$. We use a combination of combinatorial and analytic arguments in physical space along with bounds for Kloosterman sums. Our main result concerns the case when $h = N^2 + O(N)$, wherein we obtain square-root cancellation error terms by bypassing Kloosterman sum bounds and exploiting an additional symmetry available in this setting via Ramanujan sums. This confirms a speculation of Dhanda-Haynes-Prasala in a very general form.

Counting $2 \times 2$ integer matrices with a given determinant

Given positive integers $h, N$ satisfying $1 \leqslant h \leqslant 2N^2$, we define $T(h,N)$ to be the number of $2\times 2$ integer matrices with determinant equal to $h$ whose entries lie in $[-N,N]$. Our main result states that for any $\varepsilon >0$, one has \[ T(h,N) = \frac{16}{\zeta(2)} N^2 \bigg( \sum_{d |h} \frac{1}{d} \bigg) + O_{\varepsilon}(N^{\varepsilon} (N+ h)).\] This quantitatively improves upon recent work of Afifurrahman and Ganguly--Guria, and delivers square-root cancellation estimates when $h \leq N$. We further show that when $h$ is large, the error term is of approximately the correct order.

On commuting integer matrices

Given $d, N \in \mathbb{N}$, we define $\mathfrak{C}_d(N)$ to be the number of pairs of $d\times d$ matrices $A,B$ with entries in $[-N,N] \cap \mathbb{Z}$ such that $AB = BA$. We prove that $$ N^{10} \ll \mathfrak{C}_3(N) \ll N^{10},$$ thus confirming a speculation of Browning-Sawin-Wang. We further establish that $$ \mathfrak{C}_2(N) = K(2N+1)^5 (1 + o(1)),$$ where $K>0$ is an explicit constant. Our methods are completely elementary and rely on upper bounds of the correct order for restricted divisor correlations with high uniformity.

Additive Ramsey theory over Piatetski-Shapiro numbers

We characterise partition regularity for linear equations over the Piatetski-Shapiro numbers $\lfloor n^c \rfloor$ when $1 < c < c^\dag(s)$, where $s \geqslant 3$ is the number of variables. Here $c^\dag(3) = 12/11$ and $c^\dag(4) = 7/6$, while $c^\dag(s) = 2$ for $s \geqslant 5$. We also establish density results with quantitative bounds. Following recent developments, we take this opportunity to update Browning and Prendiville's version of Green's Fourier-analytic transference principle, strengthening its conclusion.

Reliable OOD Virtual Screening with Extrapolatory Pseudo-Label Matching

Machine learning (ML) models are increasingly deployed for virtual screening in drug discovery, where the goal is to identify novel, chemically diverse scaffolds while minimizing experimental costs. This creates a fundamental challenge: the most valuable discoveries lie in out-of-distribution (OOD) regions beyond the training data, yet ML models often degrade under distribution shift. Standard novelty-rejection strategies ensure reliability within the training domain but limit discovery by rejecting precisely the novel scaffolds most worth finding. Moreover, experimental budgets permit testing only a small fraction of nominated candidates, demanding models that produce reliable confidence estimates. We introduce EXPLOR (Extrapolatory Pseudo-Label Matching for OOD Uncertainty-Based Rejection), a framework that addresses both challenges through extrapolatory pseudo-labeling on latent-space augmentations, requiring only a single labeled training set and no access to unlabeled test compounds, mirroring the realistic conditions of prospective screening campaigns. Through a multi-headed architecture with a novel per-head matching loss, EXPLOR learns to extrapolate to OOD chemical space while producing reliable confidence estimates, with particularly strong performance in high-confidence regions, which is critical for virtual screening where only top-ranked candidates advance to experimental validation. We demonstrate state-of-the-art performance across chemical and tabular benchmarks using different molecular embeddings.

Arithmetic Ramsey theory over the primes

We study density and partition properties of polynomial equations in prime variables. We consider equations of the form $a_1h(x_1) + \cdots + a_sh(x_s)=b$, where the $a_i$ and $b$ are fixed coefficients, and $h$ is an arbitrary integer polynomial of degree $d$. Provided there are at least $(1+o(1))d^2$ variables, we establish necessary and sufficient criteria for this equation to have a monochromatic non-constant solution with respect to any finite colouring of the prime numbers. We similarly characterise when such equations admit solutions over any set of primes with positive relative upper density. In both cases, we obtain counting results which provide asymptotically sharp lower bounds for the number of monochromatic or dense solutions in primes. Our main new ingredient is a uniform lower bound on the cardinality of a prime polynomial Bohr set.

On the number of monochromatic solutions to multiplicative equations

The following question was asked by Prendiville: given an $r$-colouring of the interval $\{2, \dotsc, N\}$, what is the minimum number of monochromatic solutions of the equation $xy = z$? For $r=2$, we show that there are always asymptotically at least $(1/2\sqrt{2}) N^{1/2} \log N$ monochromatic solutions, and that the leading constant is sharp. For $r=3$ and $r=4$ we obtain tight results up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor. We also provide bounds for more colours and other multiplicative equations.

Generalised Rado and Roth criteria

We study the Ramsey properties of equations $a_1P(x_1) + \cdots + a_sP(x_s) = b$, where $a_1,\ldots,a_s,b$ are integers, and $P$ is an integer polynomial of degree $d$. Provided there are at least $(1+o(1))d^2$ variables, we show that Rado's criterion and an intersectivity condition completely characterise which equations of this form admit monochromatic solutions with respect to an arbitrary finite colouring of the positive integers. Furthermore, we obtain a Roth-type theorem for these equations, showing that they admit non-constant solutions over any set of integers with positive upper density if and only if $b= a_1 + \cdots + a_s = 0$. In addition, we establish sharp asymptotic lower bounds for the number of monochromatic/dense solutions (supersaturation).

Partition regularity for systems of diagonal equations

We consider systems of $n$ diagonal equations in $k$th powers. Our main result shows that if the coefficient matrix of such a system is sufficiently non-singular, then the system is partition regular if and only if it satisfies Rado's columns condition. Furthermore, if the system also admits constant solutions, then we prove that the system has non-trivial solutions over every set of integers of positive upper density.

On the Ramsey number of the Brauer configuration

We obtain a double exponential bound in Brauer's generalisation of van der Waerden's theorem, which concerns progressions with the same colour as their common difference. Such a result has been obtained independently and in much greater generality by Sanders. Using Gowers' local inverse theorem, our bound is quintuple exponential in the length of the progression. We refine this bound in the colour aspect for three-term progressions, and combine our arguments with an insight of Lefmann to obtain analogous bounds for the Ramsey numbers of certain nonlinear quadratic equations.

Partition regularity and multiplicatively syndetic sets

We show how multiplicatively syndetic sets can be used in the study of partition regularity of dilation invariant systems of polynomial equations. In particular, we prove that a dilation invariant system of polynomial equations is partition regular if and only if it has a solution inside every multiplicatively syndetic set. We also adapt the methods of Green-Tao and Chow-Lindqvist-Prendiville to develop a syndetic version of Roth's density increment strategy. This argument is then used to obtain bounds on the Rado numbers of configurations of the form $\{x, d, x + d, x + 2d\}$.

A practical guide to stochastic simulations of reaction-diffusion processes

A practical introduction to stochastic modelling of reaction-diffusion processes is presented. No prior knowledge of stochastic simulations is assumed. The methods are explained using illustrative examples. The article starts with the classical Gillespie algorithm for the stochastic modelling of chemical reactions. Then stochastic algorithms for modelling molecular diffusion are given. Finally, basic stochastic reaction-diffusion methods are presented. The connections between stochastic simulations and deterministic models are explained and basic mathematical tools (e.g. chemical master equation) are presented. The article concludes with an overview of more advanced methods and problems.

On chemisorption of polymers to solid surfaces

The irreversible adsorption of polymers to a two-dimensional solid surface is studied. An operator formalism is introduced for chemisorption from a polydisperse solution of polymers which transforms the analysis of the adsorption process to a set of combinatorial problems on a two-dimensional lattice. The time evolution of the number of polymers attached and the surface area covered are calculated via a series expansion. The dependence of the final coverage on the parameters of the model (i.e. the parameters of the distribution of polymer lengths in the solution) is studied. Various methods for accelerating the convergence of the resulting infinite series are considered. To demonstrate the accuracy of the truncated series approach, the series expansion results are compared with the results of stochastic simulation.

Dynamics of polydisperse irreversible adsorption: a pharmacological example

Many drug delivery systems suffer from undesirable interactions with the host immune system. It has been experimentally established that covalent attachment (irreversible adsorption) of suitable macromolecules to the surface of the drug carrier can reduce such undesirable interactions. A fundamental understanding of the adsorption process is still lacking. In this paper, the classical random irreversible adsorption model is generalized to capture certain essential processes involved in pharmacological applications, allowing for macromolecules of different sizes, partial overlapping of the tails of macromolecules, and the influence of reactions with the solvent on the adsorption process. Working in one dimension, an integro-differential evolution equation for the adsorption process is derived and the asymptotic behaviour of the surface area covered and the number of molecules attached to the surface is studied. Finally, equation-free dynamic renormalization tools are applied to study the asymptotically self-similar behaviour of the adsorption statistics.
