Holomorphic linking numbers, ABC Massey products, and Calabi-Yau 3-folds

On compact K\"ahler manifolds, we relate ABC Massey products arising from complex analytic cycles to holomorphic linking numbers. This enables us to construct a family of simply connected projective 3-folds with trivial canonical bundle, equipped with a non-vanishing ABC Massey product.

Strong formality of toric and homogeneous compact K\"ahler manifolds

All compact K\"ahler, or even $\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds, are rationally formal. Not all of them are strongly formal. Yet some of them are: For complete smooth complex toric varieties and homogeneous compact K\"ahler manifolds we show the stronger property that they are both rationally and strongly formal in a compatible way.

Differential forms and invariants of complex manifolds

A survey of some results and open questions related to the following algebraic invariants of compact complex manifolds, that can be obtained from differential forms: cohomology groups, Chern classes, rational homotopy groups, and higher operations.

Nontrivial Massey products on compact K\"ahler manifolds

We show that the bigraded quasi-isomorphism type of the bigraded, bidifferential algebra of forms on a compact K\"ahler manifold generally contains more information than the de Rham cohomology algebra with its real Hodge structure. More precisely, on any closed Riemann surface of genus at least two, there is a nontrivial ABC-Massey product. Furthermore, starting from dimension three, there are simply connected projective manifolds with a nonzero ABC-Massey product of three divisor classes. In particular, compact K\"ahler manifolds are generally not formal in the sense of pluripotential homotopy theory.

Formality is preserved under domination

If a closed orientable manifold (resp. rational Poincar\'e duality space) $X$ receives a map $Y \to X$ from a formal manifold (resp. space) $Y$ that hits a fundamental class, then $X$ is formal. The main technical ingredient in the proof states that given a map of $A_\infty$-algebras $A\to B$ admitting a homotopy $A$-bimodule retract, formality of $B$ implies that of $A$.

Complex non-K\"ahler manifolds that are cohomologically close to, or far from, being K\"ahler

We give four constructions of non-$\partial\bar\partial$ (hence non-K\"ahler) manifolds: (1) A simply connected page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifold (2) A simply connected $dd^c+3$-manifold (3) For any $r\geq 2$, a simply connected compact manifold with nonzero differential on the $r$-th page of the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence. (4) For any $r\geq 2$, a pluriclosed nilmanifold with nonzero differential on the $r$-th page of the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence. The latter disproves a conjecture by Popovici. A main ingredient in the first three constructions is a simple resolution construction of certain quotient singularities with control on the cohomology.

Pluripotential Homotopy Theory

We build free, bigraded bidifferential algebra models for the forms on a complex manifold, with respect to a strong notion of quasi-isomorphism and compatible with the conjugation symmetry. This answers a question of Sullivan. The resulting theory naturally accomodates higher operations involving double primitives. As applications, we obtain various refinements of the homotopy groups, sensitive to the complex structure. Under a simple connectedness assumption, one obtains minimal models which are unique up to isomorphism and allow for explicit computations of the new invariants.

A ddc-type condition beyond the K\"ahler realm

This paper introduces a generalization of the ddc-condition for complex manifolds. Like the dd^c-condition, it admits a diverse collection of characterizations, and is hereditary under various geometric constructions. Most notably, it is an open property with respect to small deformations. The condition is satisfied by a wide range of complex manifolds including all compact complex surfaces, and all compact Vaisman manifolds. We show there are computable invariants of a real homotopy type which in many cases prohibit it from containing any complex manifold satisfying such ddc-type conditions in low degrees. This gives rise to numerous examples of almost complex manifolds which cannot be homotopy equivalent to any of these complex manifolds.

Some remarks on the Schweitzer complex

We prove that the Schweitzer complex is elliptic and its cohomologies define cohomological functors. As applications, we obtain finite dimensionality, a version of Serre duality, restrictions of the behaviour of cohomology in small deformations, and an index formula which turns out to be equivalent to the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch relations.

Poincar\'e dualization and Massey products

We study the rational homotopy theoretic and geometric properties of a construction which extends any cohomologically connected, finite type cdga to one satisfying cohomological Poincar\'e duality. Using this construction we show that non-trivial quadruple Massey products can pull back trivially under non-zero degree maps of Poincar\'e duality spaces, unlike the case of triple Massey products as studied by Taylor. We also show that a non-zero degree map between formal rational Poincar\'e duality spaces need not be formal. Our consideration of Massey products naturally ties in with cyclic $A_\infty$-algebras modelling Poincar\'e duality spaces.

Bigraded notions of formality and Aeppli-Bott-Chern-Massey products

We introduce and study notions of bigraded formality for the algebra of forms on a complex manifold, along with their relation to higher Aeppli-Bott-Chern-Massey products which extend the case of triple products studied by Angella-Tomassini. We show that these Aeppli-Bott-Chern-Massey products on complex manifolds pull back non-trivially to the blow-up along a complex submanifold, as long their degree is less than the real codimension of the submanifold.

On metric and cohomological properties of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds

We study metric and cohomological properties of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. In particular, we describe the structure of the double complex of differential forms and its Bott-Chern cohomology and we characterize the existence of pluriclosed (aka SKT) metrics in number-theoretic and cohomological terms. Moreover, we prove they do not admit any Hermitian metric $\omega$ such that $\partial \overline{\partial} \omega^k=0$, for $2 \leq k \leq n-2$ and we give explicit formulas for the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds admitting pluriclosed metrics.

Maximally non-integrable almost complex structures: an $h$-principle and cohomological properties

We study almost complex structures with lower bounds on the rank of the Nijenhuis tensor. Namely, we show that they satisfy an $h$-principle. As a consequence, all parallelizable manifolds and all manifolds of dimension $2n\geq 10$ (respectively $\geq 6$) admit a almost complex structure whose Nijenhuis tensor has maximal rank everywhere (resp. is nowhere trivial). For closed $4$-manifolds, the existence of such structures is characterized in terms of topological invariants. Moreover, we show that the Dolbeault cohomology of non-integrable almost complex structures is often infinite dimensional (even on compact manifolds).

On linear combinations of cohomological invariants of compact complex manifolds

We prove that there are no unexpected universal integral linear relations and congruences between Hodge, Betti and Chern numbers of compact complex manifolds and determine the linear combinations of such numbers which are bimeromorphic or topological invariants. This extends results in the K\"ahler case by Kotschick and Schreieder. We then develop a framework to tackle the more general questions taking into account `all' cohomological invariants (e.g. the dimensions of the higher pages of the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence, Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomology). This allows us to reduce the general questions to specific construction problems. We solve these problems in many cases. In particular, we obtain full answers to the general questions concerning universal relations and bimeromorphic invariants in low dimensions.

Fr\"olicher spectral sequence and Hodge structures on the cohomology of complex parallelisable manifolds

For complex parallelisable manifolds $\Gamma\backslash G$, with $G$ a solvable or semisimple complex Lie group, the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence degenerates at the second page. In the solvable case, the de-Rham cohomology carries a pure Hodge structure. In contrast, in the semisimple case, purity depends on the lattice, but there is always a direct summand of the de Rham cohomology which does carry a pure Hodge structure and is independent of the lattice.

Deformations of Higher-Page Analogues of $\partial\bar\partial$-Manifolds

We extend the notion of essential deformations from the case of the Iwasawa manifold, for which they were introduced recently by the first-named author, to the general case of page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds that were jointly introduced very recently by all three authors. We go on to obtain an analogue of the unobstructedness theorem of Bogomolov, Tian and Todorov for page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds. As applications of this discussion, we study the small deformations of certain Nakamura solvmanifolds and reinterpret the cases of the Iwasawa manifold and its $5$-dimensional analogue from this standpoint.

Higher-Page Bott-Chern and Aeppli Cohomologies and Applications

For every positive integer $r$, we introduce two new cohomologies, that we call $E_r$-Bott-Chern and $E_r$-Aeppli, on compact complex manifolds. When $r=1$, they coincide with the usual Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies, but they are coarser, respectively finer, than these when $r\geq 2$. They provide analogues in the Bott-Chern-Aeppli context of the $E_r$-cohomologies featuring in the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence of the manifold. We apply these new cohomologies in several ways to characterise the notion of page-$(r-1)$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds that we introduced very recently. We also prove analogues of the Serre duality for these higher-page Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies and for the spaces featuring in the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence. We obtain a further group of applications of our cohomologies to the study of Hermitian-symplectic and strongly Gauduchon metrics for which we show that they provide the natural cohomological framework.

Higher-Page Hodge Theory of Compact Complex Manifolds

On a compact $\partial\bar\partial$-manifold $X$, one has the Hodge decomposition: the de Rham cohomology groups split into subspaces of pure-type classes as $H_{dR}^k (X)=\oplus_{p+q=k}H^{p,\,q}(X)$, where the $H^{p,\,q}(X)$ are canonically isomorphic to the Dolbeault cohomology groups $H_{\bar\partial}^{p,\,q}(X)$. For an arbitrary nonnegative integer $r$, we introduce the class of page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds by requiring the analogue of the Hodge decomposition to hold on a compact complex manifold $X$ when the usual Dolbeault cohomology groups $H^{p,\,q}_{\bar\partial}(X)$ are replaced by the spaces $E_{r+1}^{p,\,q}(X)$ featuring on the $(r+1)$-st page of the Fr\"olicher spectral sequence of $X$. The class of page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds coincides with the usual class of $\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds when $r=0$ but may increase as $r$ increases. We give two kinds of applications. On the one hand, we give a purely numerical characterisation of the page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-property in terms of dimensions of various cohomology vector spaces. On the other hand, we obtain several classes of examples, including all complex parallelisable nilmanifolds and certain families of solvmanifolds and abelian nilmanifolds. Further, there are general results about the behaviour of this new class under standard constructions like blow-ups and deformations.
