How to Expand a Self-orthogonal Code

In this paper, we show how to expand Euclidean/Hermitian self-orthogonal code preserving their orthogonal property. Our results show that every $k$-dimension Hermitian self-orthogonal code is contained in a $(k+1)$-dimensional Hermitian self-orthogonal code. Also, for $k< n/2-1$, every $[n,k]$ Euclidean self-orthogonal code is contained in an $[n,k+1]$ Euclidean self-orthogonal code. Moreover, for $k=n/2-1$ and $p=2$, we can also fulfill the expanding process. But for $k=n/2-1$ and $p$ odd prime, the expanding process can be fulfilled if and only if an extra condition must be satisfied. We also propose two feasible algorithms on these expanding procedures.

Galois equiangular tight frames from Galois self-dual codes

Greaves et al. (2022) extended frames over real or complex numbers to frames over finite fields. In this paper, we study the theory of frames over finite fields by incorporating the Galois inner products introduced by Fan and Zhang (2017), which generalize the Euclidean and Hermitian inner products. We define a class of frames, called Galois frames over finite fields, along with related notions such as Galois Gram matrices, Galois frame operators, and Galois equiangular tight frames (Galois ETFs). We also characterize when Galois self-dual codes induce Galois ETFs. Furthermore, we construct explicitly Galois ETFs from Galois self-dual constacyclic codes.

Log-Concave Sequences in Coding Theory

We introduce the notion of logarithmically concave (or log-concave) sequences in Coding Theory. A sequence $a_0, a_1, \dots, a_n$ of real numbers is called log-concave if $a_i^2 \ge a_{i-1}a_{i+1}$ for all $1 \le i \le n-1$. A natural sequence of positive numbers in coding theory is the weight distribution of a linear code consisting of the nonzero values among $A_i$'s where $A_i$ denotes the number of codewords of weight $i$. We call a linear code log-concave if its nonzero weight distribution is log-concave. Our main contribution is to show that all binary general Hamming codes of length $2^r -1$ ($r=3$ or $r \ge 5$), the binary extended Hamming codes of length $2^r ~(r \ge 3)$, and the second order Reed-Muller codes $R(2, m)~ (m \ge 2)$ are all log-concave while the homogeneous and projective second order Reed-Muller codes are either log-concave, or 1-gap log-concave. Furthermore, we show that any MDS $[n, k]$ code over $\mathbb F_q$ satisfying $3 \leqslant k \leqslant n/2 +3$ is log-concave if $q \geqslant q_0(n, k)$ which is the larger root of a quadratic polynomial. Hence, we expect that the concept of log-concavity in coding theory will stimulate many interesting problems.

Fuzzy linear codes based on nested linear codes

In this paper, we describe a correspondence between a fuzzy linear code and a family of nested linear codes. We also describe the arithmetic of fuzzy linear codes. As a special class of nested linear codes, we consider a family of nested self-orthogonal codes. A linear code is self-orthogonal if it is contained in its dual and self-dual if it is equal to its dual. We introduce a definition of fuzzy self-dual or self-orthogonal codes which include classical self-dual or self-orthogonal codes. As examples, we construct several interesting classes of fuzzy linear codes including fuzzy Hamming codes, fuzzy Golay codes, and fuzzy Reed-Muller codes. We also give a general decoding algorithm for fuzzy linear codes.

Expanding self-orthogonal codes over a ring $\Z_4$ to self-dual codes and unimodular lattices

Self-dual codes have been studied actively because they are connected with mathematical structures including block designs and lattices and have practical applications in quantum error-correcting codes and secret sharing schemes. Nevertheless, there has been less attention to construct self-dual codes from self-orthogonal codes with smaller dimensions. Hence, the main purpose of this paper is to propose a way to expand any self-orthogonal code over a ring $\Z_4$ to many self-dual codes over $\Z_4$. We show that all self-dual codes over $\Z_4$ of lengths $4$ to $8$ can be constructed this way. Furthermore, we have found five new self-dual codes over $\Z_4$ of lengths $27, 28, 29, 33,$ and $34$ with the highest Euclidean weight $12$. Moreover, using Construction $A$ applied to our new Euclidean-optimal self-dual codes over $\Z_4$, we have constructed a new odd extremal unimodular lattice in dimension 34 whose kissing number was not previously known.

Triorthogonal Codes and Self-dual Codes

Triorthogonal matrices were introduced in Quantum Information Theory in connection with distillation of magic states (Bravyi and Haah (2012)). We give an algorithm to construct binary triorthogonal matrices from binary self-dual codes. Further, we generalize to this setting the classical coding techniques of shortening and extending. We also give some simple propagation rules.

Hulls of Projective Reed-Muller Codes

Projective Reed-Muller codes are constructed from the family of projective hypersurfaces of a fixed degree over a finite field $\F_q$. We consider the relationship between projective Reed-Muller codes and their duals. We determine when these codes are self-dual, when they are self-orthogonal, and when they are LCD. We then show that when $q$ is sufficiently large, the dimension of the hull of a projective Reed-Muller code is 1 less than the dimension of the code. We determine the dimension of the hull for a wider range of parameters and describe how this leads to a new proof of a recent result of Ruano and San José (2024).

The Dimensions of the Hulls of Conorm Codes from Algebraic Geometry Codes

Chara et al. introduced conorm codes defined over algebraic geometry codes, but the hulls of conorm codes were not determined yet. In this paper, we study the dimension of the hull of conorm codes using the method introduced by Camps et al. For an algebraic geometry code $\mathcal{C}:=C_\mathscr{L}(D, G)$, we consider the divisor $\gcd(G, H)$, where $H$ is the divisor satisfying \[C_\mathscr{L}(D, G)^\perp=C_\mathscr{L}(D, H).\] Given an extension $F'/\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$ of an algebraic function field $F/\mathbb{F}_q$, we assume that the divisor $\gcd(G, H)$ is non-special. If the degree of $\gcd(G, H)$ is greater than $2g-2+{t\over [F':F]}°\text{Diff}(F'/F)$, then we have determined the exact dimension of the hull of the conorm of $\mathcal{C}$. If not, we have determined the lower bound of the dimension of the hull of the conorm of $\mathcal{C}$. We provide some examples for the dimension of the hull of certain conorm codes of AG codes defined over a rational function field.

A quaternary analogue of Tang-Ding codes

In a recent paper, Tang and Ding introduced a class of binary cyclic codes of rate close to one half with a designed lower bound on their minimum distance. The definition involves the base $2$ expansion of the integers in their defining set. In this paper we propose an analogue for quaternary codes. In addition, the performances of the subfield subcode and of the trace code (two binary cyclic codes) are investigated.

Characterization and construction of optimal binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull

The hull of a linear code over finite fields is the intersection of the code and its dual, and linear codes with small hulls have applications in computational complexity and information protection. Linear codes with the smallest hull are LCD codes, which have been widely studied. Recently, several papers were devoted to related LCD codes over finite fields with size greater than 3 to linear codes with one-dimensional or higher dimensional hull. Therefore, an interesting and non-trivial problem is to study binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull with connection to binary LCD codes. The objective of this paper is to study some properties of binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull, and establish their relation with binary LCD codes. Some interesting inequalities are thus obtained. Using such a characterization, we study the largest minimum distance $d_{one}(n,k)$ among all binary linear $[n,k]$ codes with one-dimensional hull. We determine the largest minimum distances $d_{one}(n,n-k)$ for $ k\leq 5$ and $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k\leq 4$ or $14\leq n\leq 24$. We partially determine the exact value of $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k=5$ or $25\leq n\leq 30$.

Binary self-orthogonal codes which meet the Griesmer bound or have optimal minimum distances

The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we characterize the existence of binary self-orthogonal codes meeting the Griesmer bound by employing Solomon-Stiffler codes and some related residual codes. Second, using such a characterization, we determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,7)$ except for five special cases and the exact value of $d_{so}(n,8)$ except for 41 special cases, where $d_{so}(n,k)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all binary self-orthogonal $[n, k]$ codes. Currently, the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ $(k \le 6)$ was determined by Shi et al. (2022). In addition, we develop a general method to prove the nonexistence of some binary self-orthogonal codes by considering the residual code of a binary self-orthogonal code.

Binary optimal linear codes with various hull dimensions and entanglement-assisted QECC

The hull of a linear code $C$ is the intersection of $C$ with its dual. To the best of our knowledge, there are very few constructions of binary linear codes with the hull dimension $\ge 2$ except for self-orthogonal codes. We propose a building-up construction to obtain a plenty of binary $[n+2, k+1]$ codes with hull dimension $\ell, \ell +1$, or $\ell +2$ from a given binary $[n,k]$ code with hull dimension $\ell$. In particular, with respect to hull dimensions 1 and 2, we construct all binary optimal $[n, k]$ codes of lengths up to 13. With respect to hull dimensions 3, 4, and 5, we construct all binary optimal $[n,k]$ codes of lengths up to 12 and the best possible minimum distances of $[13,k]$ codes for $3 \le k \le 10$. As an application, we apply our binary optimal codes with a given hull dimension to construct several entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes(EAQECC) with the best known parameters.

Two conjectures on the largest minimum distances of binary self-orthogonal codes with dimension 5

The purpose of this paper is to solve the two conjectures on the largest minimum distance $d_{so}(n,5)$ of a binary self-orthogonal $[n,5]$ code proposed by Kim and Choi (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2022). The determination of $d_{so}(n,k)$ has been a fundamental and difficult problem in coding theory because there are too many binary self-orthogonal codes as the dimension $k$ increases. Recently, Kim et al. (2021) considered the shortest self-orthogonal embedding of a binary linear code, and many binary optimal self-orthogonal $[n,k]$ codes were constructed for $k=4,5$. Kim and Choi (2022) improved some results of Kim et al. (2021) and made two conjectures on $d_{so}(n,5)$. In this paper, we develop a general method to determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ for $k=5,6$ and show that the two conjectures made by Kim and Choi (2022) are true.

Additive complementary dual codes over $\F_4$

A linear code is linear complementary dual (LCD) if it meets its dual trivially. LCD codes have been a hot topic recently due to Boolean masking application in the security of embarked electronics (Carlet and Guilley, 2014). Additive codes over $\F_4$ are $\F_4$-codes that are stable by codeword addition but not necessarily by scalar multiplication. An additive code over $\F_4$ is additive complementary dual (ACD) if it meets its dual trivially. The aim of this research is to study such codes which meet their dual trivially. All the techniques and problems used to study LCD codes are potentially relevant to ACD codes. Interesting constructions of ACD codes from binary codes are given with respect to the trace Hermitian and trace Euclidean inner product. The former product is relevant to quantum codes.

Extending binary linear codes to self-orthogonal codes

Kim et al. (2021) gave a method to embed a given binary $[n,k]$ code $\mathcal{C}$ $(k = 3, 4)$ into a self-orthogonal code of the shortest length which has the same dimension $k$ and minimum distance $d' \ge d(\mathcal{C})$. We extend this result by proposing a new method related to a special matrix, called the self-orthogonality matrix $SO_k$, obtained by shortening a Reed-Muller code $\mathcal R(2,k)$. Using this approach, we can extend binary linear codes to many optimal self-orthogonal codes of dimensions $5$ and $6$. Furthermore, we partially disprove the conjecture (Kim et al. (2021)) by showing that if $31 \le n \le 256$ and $n\equiv 14,22,29 \pmod{31}$, then there exist optimal $[n,5]$ codes which are self-orthogonal. We also construct optimal self-orthogonal $[n,6]$ codes when $41 \le n \le 256$ satisfies $n \ne 46, 54, 61$ and $n \not\equiv 7, 14, 22, 29, 38, 45, 53, 60 \pmod{63}$.

Recent results on Choi's orthogonal Latin squares

Choi Seok-Jeong studied Latin squares at least 60 years earlier than Euler although this was less known. He introduced a pair of orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 in his book. Interestingly, his two orthogonal non-double-diagonal Latin squares produce a magic square of order 9, whose theoretical reason was not studied. There have been a few studies on Choi's Latin squares of order 9. The most recent one is Ko-Wei Lih's construction of Choi's Latin squares of order 9 based on the two $3 \times 3$ orthogonal Latin squares. In this paper, we give a new generalization of Choi's orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 to orthogonal Latin squares of size $n^2$ using the Kronecker product including Lih's construction. We find a geometric description of Choi's orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 using the dihedral group $D_8$. We also give a new way to construct magic squares from two orthogonal non-double-diagonal Latin squares, which explains why Choi's Latin squares produce a magic square of order 9.

Self-orthogonal codes over a non-unital ring and combinatorial matrices

There is a local ring $E$ of order $4,$ without identity for the multiplication, defined by generators and relations as $E=\langle a,b \mid 2a=2b=0,\, a^2=a,\, b^2=b,\,ab=a,\, ba=b\rangle.$ We study a special construction of self-orthogonal codes over $E,$ based on combinatorial matrices related to two-class association schemes, Strongly Regular Graphs (SRG), and Doubly Regular Tournaments (DRT). We construct quasi self-dual codes over $E,$ and Type IV codes, that is, quasi self-dual codes whose all codewords have even Hamming weight. All these codes can be represented as formally self-dual additive codes over $\F_4.$ The classical invariant theory bound for the weight enumerators of this class of codesimproves the known bound on the minimum distance of Type IV codes over $E.$

DNA codes over two noncommutative rings of order four

In this paper, we describe a new type of DNA codes over two noncommutative rings $E$ and $F$ of order four with characteristic 2. Our DNA codes are based on quasi self-dual codes over $E$ and $F$. Using quasi self-duality, we can describe fixed GC-content constraint weight distributions and reverse-complement constraint minimum distributions of those codes.
