Triangulated polygons and Y-frieze patterns

In the spirit of Conway and Coxeter, we classify all $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns of type $A_n$. In particular, we settle a conjecture made by de Saint Germain that all such $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns arise from Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns. Moreover, our approach naturally leads to the enumeration of these $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns in terms of Fuss-Catalan numbers.

EFT Workshop at Notre Dame

The LPC EFT workshop was held April 25-26, 2024 at the University of Notre Dame. The workshop was organized into five thematic sessions: "how far beyond linear" discusses issues of truncation and validity in interpretation of results with an eye towards practicality; "reconstruction-level results" visits the question of how best to design analyses directly targeting inference of EFT parameters; "logistics of combining likelihoods" addresses the challenges of bringing a diverse array of measurements into a cohesive whole; "unfolded results" tackles the question of designing fiducial measurements for later use in EFT interpretations, and the benefits and limitations of unfolding; and "building a sample library" addresses how best to generate simulation samples for use in data analysis. This document serves as a summary of presentations, subsequent discussions, and actionable items identified over the course of the workshop.

Bangle functions are the generic basis for cluster algebras from punctured surfaces with boundary

We prove that for any possibly-punctured surface with non-empty boundary $\mathbf{\Sigma}=(\Sigma, \mathbb{M}, \mathbb{P})$, and any tagged triangulation $T$ of $\mathbf{\Sigma}$ in the sense of Fomin--Shapiro--Thurston, the coefficient-free bangle functions of Musiker--Schiffler--Williams coincide with the coefficient-free generic Caldero--Chapoton functions arising from the Jacobian algebra of the quiver with potential $(Q(T), W(T))$ associated to $T$ by Cerulli Irelli and the second author. When the set of boundary marked points $\mathbb{M}$ has at least two elements, Schr\"oer and the first two authors have shown, relying heavily on results of Mills, Muller and Qin, that the generic coefficient-free Caldero-Chapoton functions form a basis of the coefficient-free (upper) cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}(\mathbf{\Sigma})=\mathcal{U}(\mathbf{\Sigma})$. So, the set of bangle functions proposed by Musiker--Schiffler--Williams over ten years ago is indeed a basis.

Laminations of punctured surfaces as $\tau$-regular irreducible components

Let $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}:=(\Sigma,\mathbb{M},\mathbb{P})$ be a surface with marked points $\mathbb{M}\subset\partial\Sigma\neq\varnothing$ on the boundary, and punctures $\mathbb{P}\subset\Sigma\setminus\partial\Sigma$, and $T$ an arbitrary tagged triangulation of $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}$ in the sense of Fomin-Shapiro-Thurston. The Jacobian algebra $A(T):=\mathcal{P}(Q(T), W(T))$ corresponding to the non-degenerate potential $W(T)$ defined by Cerulli Irelli and the second author is tame, as shown by Schr\"{o}er and the first two authors. In this paper, we show that there is a natural isomorphism $\pi_T:\operatorname{Lam}(\boldsymbol{\Sigma})\rightarrow\operatorname{DecIrr}^\tau(A(T))$ of tame partial KRS-monoids that intertwines dual shear coordinates with respect to $T$, and generic $g$-vectors of irreducible components. Here, $\operatorname{Lam}(\boldsymbol{\Sigma})$ is the set of laminations of $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}$ considered by Musiker-Schiffler-Williams, with the disjoint union of non-intersecting laminations as partial monoid operation. On the other hand, $\operatorname{DecIrr}^\tau(A(T))$ denotes the set of generically $\tau$-regular irreducible components of the decorated representation varieties of $A(T)$, with the direct sum of generically $E$-orthogonal irreducible components as partial monoid operation, where $E$ is the symmetrized $E$-invariant of Derksen-Weyman-Zelevinsky, $E(-,\bullet)=\dim\operatorname{Hom}_{A(T)}(-,\tau(\bullet))+\dim\operatorname{Hom}_{A(T)}(\bullet,\tau(-))$.

Surface cluster algebra expansion formulae via loop graphs

In 2011 Musiker, Schiffler and Williams obtained expansion formulae for cluster algebras from orientable surfaces. For singly and doubly notched arcs these formulae required the notion of $\gamma$-symmetric perfect matchings and $\gamma$-compatible pairs of $\gamma$-symmetric perfect matchings, respectively. We simplify and unify these approaches by considering good matchings of loop graphs.

Positivity for quasi-cluster algebras

We generalise the expansion formulae of Musiker, Schiffler and Williams, obtained for cluster algebras from orientable surfaces, to a larger class of coefficients which we call principal laminations. In doing so, for any quasi-cluster algebra from a non-orientable surface, we are able to obtain expansion formulae for each cluster variable with respect to any initial quasi-triangulation $T$, and any choice of principal lamination. Moreover, generalising the `separation of additions' formula of Fomin and Zelevinsky, we settle a conjecture of Lam and Pylyavskyy in the setting of quasi-cluster algebras. Namely, we prove the positivity conjecture for quasi-cluster algebras with respect to any choice of coefficients.

Energy Loss Due to Defect Formation from $^{206}$Pb Recoils in SuperCDMS Germanium Detectors

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment (SuperCDMS) at the Soudan Underground Laboratory studied energy loss associated with Frenkel defect formation in germanium crystals at mK temperatures using in situ $^{210}$Pb sources. We examine the spectrum of $^{206}$Pb nuclear recoils near its expected 103 keV endpoint energy and determine an energy loss of $\left(6.08\pm0.18\right)$ %, which we attribute to defect formation. From this result and using TRIM simulations, we extract the first experimentally determined average displacement threshold energy of $\left(19.7^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\right)$ eV for germanium. This has implications for the analysis thresholds of future germanium-based dark matter searches.

Laurent phenomenon algebras arising from surfaces II: Laminated surfaces

It was shown by Fock, Goncharov and Fomin, Shapiro, Thurston that some cluster algebras arise from triangulated orientable suraces. Subsequently Dupont and Palesi generalised this construction to include unpunctured non-orientable surfaces, giving birth to quasi-cluster algebras. Previously we linked this framework to Lam and Pylyavskyy's Laurent phenomenon algebras, showing that unpunctured surfaces admit an LP structure. In this paper we extend quasi-cluster algebras to include punctured surfaces. Moreover, by adding laminations to the surface we demonstrate that all punctured and unpunctured surfaces admit LP structures.

We link this framework to Lam and Pylyavskyy's Laurent phenomenon algebras, showing that both orientable and non-orientable unpunctured marked surfaces have an associated LP-algebra.

Shellability and Sphericity of the quasi-arc complex of the M\"obius strip

Shellability of a simplicial complex has many useful structural implications. In particular, it was shown by Danaraj and Klee that every shellable pseudo-manifold is a PL-sphere. The purpose of this paper is to prove the shellability of the quasi-arc complex of the M\"obius strip. Along the way we provide elementary proofs of the shellability of the arc complex of the $n$-gon and the cylinder. In turn, applying the result of Danaraj and Klee, we obtain the sphericity of all of these complexes.
