Average Steps until Absorption on Random Walks on Sea Dragon Trees

For a graph $G$ and vertices $u,v$, we define the ASUA of $v$, $t(G,v,u)$, to be the average steps until absorption along a random walk terminating at $u$. We define a sea dragon to be a tree with a unique path $P$ such that if $d(u) \geq 3$ for some vertex $u$, then $u \in V(P)$. We use Markov chains to determine $t(G,v,u)$ for all vertices of several classes of sea dragons, a broad subclass of trees. Additionally, we give several results on equations related to ASUAs on general graphs.

From Large to Small $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ Superconformal Surface Defects in Holographic 6d SCFTs

Two-dimensional (2d) $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ Lie superalgebras can be either "small" or "large", meaning their R-symmetry is either $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ or $\mathfrak{so}(4) \oplus \mathfrak{so}(4)$, respectively. Both cases admit a superconformal extension and fit into the one-parameter family $\mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)\oplus \mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)$, with parameter $\gamma \in (-\infty,\infty)$. The large algebra corresponds to generic values of $\gamma$, while the small case corresponds to a degeneration limit with $\gamma \to -\infty$. In 11d supergravity, we study known solutions with superisometry algebra $\mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)\oplus \mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)$ that are asymptotically locally AdS$_7 \times S^4$. These solutions are holographically dual to the 6d maximally superconformal field theory with 2d superconformal defects invariant under $\mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)\oplus \mathfrak{d}\left(2,1;\gamma\right)$. We show that a limit of these solutions, in which $\gamma \to -\infty$, reproduces another known class of solutions, holographically dual to small $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ superconformal defects. We then use this limit to generate new small $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ solutions with finite Ricci scalar, in contrast to the known small $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ solutions. We then use holography to compute the entanglement entropy of a spherical region centered on these small $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ defects, which provides a linear combination of defect Weyl anomaly coefficients that characterizes the number of defect-localized degrees of freedom. We also comment on the generalization of our results to include $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ surface defects through orbifolding.

Holographic Weyl Anomalies for 4d Defects in 6d SCFTs

In this note, we study $1/4$- and $1/2$-BPS co-dimension two superconformal defects in the $6d$ $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ $A_{N-1}$ SCFT at large $N$ using their holographic descriptions as solutions of $11d$ supergravity. In this regime, we are able to compute the defect contribution to the sphere entanglement entropy and the change in the stress-energy tensor one-point function due to the presence of the defect using holography. From these quantities, we are then able to unambiguously compute the values for two of the twenty-nine total Weyl anomaly coefficients that characterize $4d$ conformal defects in six and higher dimensions. We are able to demonstrate the consistency of the supergravity description of the defect theories with the average null energy condition on the field theory side. For each class of defects that we consider, we also show that the A-type Weyl anomaly coefficient is non-negative. Lastly, we uncover and resolve a discrepancy between the on-shell action of the $7d$ $1/4$-BPS domain wall solutions and that of their $11d$ uplift.

Stability and Observability of Magnetic Primordial Black Hole-Neutron Star Collisions

The collision of a primordial black hole with a neutron star results in the black hole eventually consuming the entire neutron star. However, if the black hole is magnetically charged, and therefore stable against decay by Hawking radiation, the consequences can be quite different. Upon colliding with a neutron star, a magnetic black hole very rapidly comes to a stop. For large enough magnetic charge, we show that this collision can be detected as a sudden change in the rotation period of the neutron star, a glitch or anti-glitch.We argue that the magnetic primordial black hole, which then settles to the core of the neutron star, does not necessarily devour the entire neutron star; the system can instead reach a long-lived, quasi-stable equilibrium. Because the black hole is microscopic compared to the neutron star, most stellar properties remain unchanged compared to before the collision. However, the neutron star will heat up and its surface magnetic field could potentially change, both effects potentially observable.

Wilson Surface Central Charge from Holographic Entanglement Entropy

We use entanglement entropy to define a central charge associated to a two-dimensional defect or boundary in a conformal field theory (CFT). We present holographic calculations of this central charge for several maximally supersymmetric CFTs dual to eleven-dimensional supergravity in Anti-de Sitter space, namely the M5-brane theory with a Wilson surface defect and three-dimensional CFTs related to the M2-brane theory with a boundary. Our results for the central charge depend on a partition of the number of M2-branes, $N$, ending on the number of M5-branes, $M$. For the Wilson surface, the partition specifies a representation of the gauge algebra, and we write our result for the central charge in a compact form in terms of the algebra's Weyl vector and the representation's highest weight vector. We explore how the central charge scales with $N$ and $M$ for some examples of partitions. In general the central charge does not scale as $M^3$ or $N^{3/2}$, the number of degrees of freedom of the M5- or M2-brane theory at large $M$ or $N$, respectively.

Holographic two-point functions for Janus interfaces in the $D1/D5$ CFT

This paper investigates scalar perturbations in the top-down supersymmetric Janus solutions dual to conformal interfaces in the $D1/D5$ CFT, finding analytic closed-form solutions. We obtain an explicit representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagator and extract the two-point correlation function of the dual operator with itself, whose form is not fixed by symmetry alone. We give an expression involving the sum of conformal blocks associated with the bulk-defect operator product expansion and briefly discuss finite-temperature extensions. To our knowledge, this is the first two-point function computation for a fully-backreacted, top-down holographic defect.

Shining Light on Quantum Gravity with Pulsar-Black Hole Binaries

Pulsars are some of the most accurate clocks found in nature, while black holes offer a unique arena for the study of quantum gravity. As such, pulsar-black hole (PSR-BH) binaries provide ideal astrophysical systems for detecting the effects of quantum gravity. With the success of aLIGO and the advent of instruments like the SKA and eLISA, the prospects for the discovery of such PSR-BH binaries are very promising. We argue that PSR-BH binaries can serve as ready-made testing grounds for proposed resolutions to the black hole information paradox. We propose using timing signals from a pulsar beam passing through the region near a black hole event horizon as a probe of quantum gravitational effects. In particular, we demonstrate that fluctuations of the geometry outside a black hole lead to an increase in the measured root mean square deviation of the arrival times of pulsar pulses traveling near the horizon. This allows for a clear observational test of the nonviolent nonlocality proposal for black hole information escape. For a series of pulses traversing the near-horizon region, this model predicts an rms in pulse arrival times of $\sim30\ \mu$s for a $3 M_\odot$ black hole, $\sim0.3\, $ms for a $30 M_\odot$ black hole, and $\sim40\, $s for Sgr A*. The current precision of pulse time-of-arrival measurements is sufficient to discern these rms fluctuations. This work is intended to motivate observational searches for PSR-BH systems as a means of testing models of quantum gravity.

Finite temperature holographic duals of 2-dimensional BCFTs

We consider holographic duals of $2$-dimensional conformal field theories in the presence of a boundary, interface, defect and/or junction, referred to collectively as BCFTs. In general, the presence of a boundary reduces the $SO(2,2)$ conformal symmetry to $SO(2,1)$ and the dual geometry is realized as a warped product of the form $AdS_2 \times {\cal M}$, where ${\cal M}$ is not compact. In particular, it will contain points where the warp factor of the $AdS_2$ space diverges, leading to asymptotically $AdS_3$ regions. We show that the $AdS_2$ space-time may always be replaced with an $AdS_2$-"black-hole" space-time. We argue the resulting geometry describes the BCFT at finite temperature. To motivate this claim, we compute the entanglement entropy holographically for a segment centered around the defect or ending on the boundary and find agreement with a known universal formula.

Near Horizon Geometry of Strings Ending on Intersecting D8/D4-branes

We consider solutions of massive IIA supergravity corresponding to the half-BPS intersection of D8/D4-branes with fundamental strings. The $1+1$-dimensional intersection preserves the symmetry $D(2,1;\gamma;1) \times SO(4)$. We give a reduction and partial integration of the BPS equations for this symmetry group. We then specialize to the cases of enhanced supersymmetry corresponding to $\gamma = -1/2,-2$ or $\gamma = 1$. In the first case, we show that the only solution with enhanced symmetry is given by the $AdS_6$ geometry describing the near horizon geometry of D8/D4-branes in the presence of an O8-plane. In the second case, we identify novel solutions corresponding to fundamental strings ending on D8-branes and a second set of novel solutions corresponding to fundamental strings ending on an O8-plane. In both cases, the fundamental string geometry contains an asymptotically flat region where the string coupling goes to zero. We also show that there are no solutions corresponding to $1+0$-dimensional CFTs, which one may have hoped to construct by suspending fundamental strings between D8-branes.

On Holographic Defect Entropy

We study a number of (3+1)- and (2+1)-dimensional defect and boundary conformal field theories holographically dual to supergravity theories. In all cases the defects or boundaries are planar, and the defects are codimension-one. Using holography, we compute the entanglement entropy of a (hemi-)spherical region centered on the defect (boundary). We define defect and boundary entropies from the entanglement entropy by an appropriate background subtraction. For some (3+1)-dimensional theories we find evidence that the defect/boundary entropy changes monotonically under certain renormalization group flows triggered by operators localized at the defect or boundary. This provides evidence that the g-theorem of (1+1)-dimensional field theories generalizes to higher dimensions.

M-theory Solutions Invariant under $D(2,1;\gamma) \oplus D(2,1;\gamma)$

We simplify and extend the construction of half-BPS solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity, with isometry superalgebra D(2,1;\gamma) \oplus D(2,1;\gamma). Their space-time has the form AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 warped over a Riemann surface \Sigma. It describes near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 branes along a common string. The general solution to the BPS equations is specified by a reduced set of data (\gamma, h, G), where \gamma is the real parameter of the isometry superalgebra, and h and G are functions on \Sigma whose differential equations and regularity conditions depend only on the sign of \gamma. The magnitude of \gamma enters only through the map of h, G onto the supergravity fields, thereby promoting all solutions into families parametrized by |\gamma|. By analyzing the regularity conditions for the supergravity fields, we prove two general theorems: (i) that the only solution with a 2-dimensional CFT dual is AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x R^2, modulo discrete identifications of the flat R^2, and (ii) that solutions with \gamma < 0 cannot have more than one asymptotic higher-dimensional AdS region. We classify the allowed singularities of h and G near the boundary of \Sigma, and identify four local solutions: asymptotic AdS_4/Z_2 or AdS_7' regions; highly-curved M5-branes; and a coordinate singularity called the "cap". By putting these "Lego" pieces together we recover all known global regular solutions with the above symmetry, including the self-dual strings on M5 for $\gamma < 0$, and the Janus solution for \gamma > 0, but now promoted to families parametrized by |\gamma|. We also construct exactly new regular solutions which are asymptotic to AdS_4/Z_2 for \gamma < 0, and conjecture that they are a different superconformal limit of the self-dual string.

Holographic Wilson Loops, Dielectric Interfaces, and Topological Insulators

We use holography to study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in the large-Nc and large coupling limits, with a (2+1)-dimensional interface where the Yang-Mills coupling or theta-angle changes value, or "jumps." We consider interfaces that either break all supersymmetry or that preserve half of the N=4 supersymmetry thanks to certain operators localized to the interface. Specifically, we compute the expectation values of a straight timelike Wilson line and of a rectangular Wilson loop in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc). The former gives us the self-energy of a heavy test charge while the latter gives us the potential between heavy test charges. A jumping coupling or theta-angle acts much like a dielectric interface in electromagnetism: a self-energy or potential includes the effects of image charges. N=4 SYM with a jumping theta-angle may also be interpreted as the low-energy effective description of a fractional topological insulator, as we explain in detail. For non-supersymmetric interfaces, we find that the self-energy and potential are qualitatively similar to those in electromagnetism, despite the differences between N=4 SYM and electromagnetism. For supersymmetric interfaces, we find dramatic differences from electromagnetism which depend sensitively on the coupling of the test charge to the adjoint scalars of N=4 SYM. In particular, we find one special case where a test charge has vanishing image charge.

Exact Half-BPS Flux Solutions in M-theory with $D(2, 1; c'; 0)^2$ Symmetry: Local Solutions

We construct local solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity (or M-theory), which are invariant under the superalgebra $D(2, 1; c'; 0)\oplus D(2, 1; c'; 0)$ for all values of the parameter $c'$. The BPS constraints are reduced to a single linear PDE on a complex function $G$. The PDE was solved in 0806.0605 modulo application of boundary and regularity conditions. The physical fields of the solutions are determined by $c'$, a harmonic function $h$, and the complex function $G$. $ h$ and $G$ are both functions on a 2-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. The harmonic function $ h$ is freely chosen. We obtain the expressions for the metric and the field strength in terms of $G$, $h$, and $c'$ and show that these are indeed valid solutions of the Einstein, Maxwell, and Bianchi equations. Finally we give a construction of one parameter deformations of $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and $AdS_4 \times S^7$ as a function of $c'$.

Wilson Loops in 5d N=1 SCFTs and AdS/CFT

We consider 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops in a class of 5d superconformal field theories on S^5. The large N limit of the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops are computed both by localization in the field theory and by evaluating the fundamental string and D4-brane actions in the dual massive IIA supergravity background. We find agreement in the leading large N limit for a rather general class of representations, including fundamental, anti-symmetric and symmetric representations. For single node theories the match is straightforward, while for quiver theories, the Wilson loop can be in different representations for each node. We highlight the two special cases when the Wilson loop is in either in all symmetric or all anti-symmetric representations. In the anti-symmetric case, we find that the vacuum expectation value factorizes into distinct contributions from each quiver node. In the dual supergravity description, this corresponds to probe D4-branes wrapping internal S^3 cycles. The story is more complicated in the symmetric case and the vacuum expectation value does not exhibit factorization.

IIB Duals of D=3 N=4 Circular Quivers

We construct the type-IIB $AdS_4\times K$ supergravity solutions which are dual to the three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal field theories that arise as infrared fixed points of circular-quiver gauge theories. These superconformal field theories are labeled by a triple $(\rho,\hat \rho,L)$ subject to constraints, where $\rho$ and $\hat \rho$ are two partitions of a number $N$, and $L$ is a positive integer. We show that in the limit of large $L$ the localized five-branes in our solutions are effectively smeared, and these type-IIB solutions are dual to the near-horizon geometry of M-theory M2-branes at a $\mathbb{C}^4/(Z_k\times Z_{\hat k})$ orbifold singularity. Our IIB solutions resolve the singularity into localized five-brane throats, without breaking the conformal symmetry. The constraints satisfied by the triple $(\rho,\hat\rho,L)$, together with the enhanced non-abelian flavour symmetries of the superconformal field theories, are precisely reproduced by the supergravity solutions. As a bonus, we uncover a novel type of "orbifold equivalence" between different quantum field theories and provide quantitative evidence for this equivalence.

Large N Free Energy of 3d N=4 SCFTs and AdS/CFT

We provide a non-trivial check of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence recently proposed in arXiv:1106.4253 by verifying the GKPW relation in the large N limit. The CFT free energy is obtained from the previous works (arXiv:1105.2551, arXiv:1105.4390) on the S^3 partition function for 3-dimensional N=4 SCFT T[SU(N)]. This is matched with the computation of the type IIB action on the corresponding gravity background. We unexpectedly find that the leading behavior of the free energy at large N is 1/2 N^2 ln N. We also extend our results to richer theories and argue that 1/2 N^2 ln N is the maximal free energy at large N in this class of gauge theories.

Geometry of open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes

We investigate open string theory on backreacting D3-branes using a spacetime approach. We study in detail the half-BPS supergravity solutions describing open strings ending on D3-branes, in the near horizon of the D3-branes. We recover quantitatively several non-trivial features of open string physics including the appearance of D3-brane spikes, the polarization of fundamental strings into D5-branes, and the Hanany-Witten effect. Finally we detail the computation of the gravitational potential between two open strings, and contrast it with the holographic computation of Wilson lines. We argue that the D-brane backreaction has a large influence on the low-energy gravity, which may lead to experimental tests for string theory brane-world scenarios.

The fate of Newton's law in brane-world scenarios

We consider brane-world scenarios embedded into string theory. We find that the D-brane backreaction induces a large increase in the open string's proper length. Consequently the stringy nature of elementary particles can be detected at distances much larger than the fundamental string scale. As an example, we compute the gravitational potential between two open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes in four-dimensional compactifications of type II string theory. We find that the Newtonian potential receives a correction that goes like 1/r but that is not proportional to the inertial masses of the open strings, implying a violation of the equivalence principle in the effective gravitational theory. This stringy correction is screened by thermal effects when the distance between the strings is greater than the inverse temperature. This suggests new experimental tests for many phenomenological models in type II string theory.
