Messengers from the Early Universe: Cosmic Neutrinos and Other Light Relics

The hot dense environment of the early universe is known to have produced large numbers of baryons, photons, and neutrinos. These extreme conditions may have also produced other long-lived species, including new light particles (such as axions or sterile neutrinos) or gravitational waves. The gravitational effects of any such light relics can be observed through their unique imprint in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the large-scale structure, and the primordial light element abundances, and are important in determining the initial conditions of the universe. We argue that future cosmological observations, in particular improved maps of the CMB on small angular scales, can be orders of magnitude more sensitive for probing the thermal history of the early universe than current experiments. These observations offer a unique and broad discovery space for new physics in the dark sector and beyond, even when its effects would not be visible in terrestrial experiments or in astrophysical environments. A detection of an excess light relic abundance would be a clear indication of new physics and would provide the first direct information about the universe between the times of reheating and neutrino decoupling one second later.

Dark Matter Science in the Era of LSST

Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Additionally, we highlight theoretical work and experimental/observational facilities that will complement LSST to strengthen our understanding of the fundamental characteristics of dark matter.

Core Cosmology Library: Precision Cosmological Predictions for LSST

The Core Cosmology Library (CCL) provides routines to compute basic cosmological observables to a high degree of accuracy, which have been verified with an extensive suite of validation tests. Predictions are provided for many cosmological quantities, including distances, angular power spectra, correlation functions, halo bias and the halo mass function through state-of-the-art modeling prescriptions available in the literature. Fiducial specifications for the expected galaxy distributions for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) are also included, together with the capability of computing redshift distributions for a user-defined photometric redshift model. A rigorous validation procedure, based on comparisons between CCL and independent software packages, allows us to establish a well-defined numerical accuracy for each predicted quantity. As a result, predictions for correlation functions of galaxy clustering, galaxy-galaxy lensing and cosmic shear are demonstrated to be within a fraction of the expected statistical uncertainty of the observables for the models and in the range of scales of interest to LSST. CCL is an open source software package written in C, with a python interface and publicly available at https://github.com/LSSTDESC/CCL.

B-Physics at the Tevatron (Proceedings of PASCOS2010)

We report on recent B-Physics results from the Tevatron. The topics covered include measurement of the polarization amplitudes in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$, the search for rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays, CP violation in $B_s^0 \to J/ψϕ$ and semileptonic $B_s^0$ decays, and a new measurement of the like-sign asymmetry in dimuon events.

Measurement of B_s Oscillations and CP Violation Results from D0

We present a measurement of the $B_s^0 - \bar B_s^0$ oscillation frequency, $Δm_s$, using a combination of semi-leptonic and hadronic $B_s$ decay candidates selected from data collected by the D0 Experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We also present several results on CP violation, including an improved measurement of the $B_s$ CP-violating phase from a flavor-tagged analysis of $B_s^0 \to J/ψ+ ϕ$ decays.

The D0 Detector Upgrade and Physics Program

The D0 detector at Fermilab is in the final stages of an extensive upgrade. It is designed to meet the demands imposed by high luminosity Tevatron running planned to begin March 2001. The design and performance of the detector subsystems are described and a brief outline of the physics potential is presented.

Measurements of the W Boson Mass and Trilinear Gauge Boson Couplings at the Tevatron

We present measurements of the W boson mass at the Tevatron based on $W \to μν$ events collected by CDF and $W \to e ν$ events observed by D0 in Run Ib (1994--95). The W boson mass measured in the preliminary CDF analysis is 80.43 \pm 0.10 (stat) \pm 0.12 (syst) GeV/c^2. The D0 measured value is 80.44 \pm 0.10 (stat) \pm 0.07 (syst) GeV/c^2. We also describe measurements of the trilinear gauge boson couplings. The limits obtained on the WWγand WWZ anomalous couplings from a combined D0 analysis using $Wγ$, $WW \to \ell ν\ell^\prime ν^\prime$, and $WW/WZ \to e νjj$ production are: -0.30 < Δκ< 0.43, -0.20 < λ< 0.20, and -0.52 < Δg^Z_1 < 0.78, for a dipole form factor scale of 2 TeV. Improved limits have been obtained by combining these results with the limits derived from the LEP experiments.

Study of Trilinear Gauge Boson Couplings at the Tevatron Collider

We review studies of the trilinear gauge boson couplings at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider from data collected by the CDF and D0 collaborations during the period 1992--1996. The gauge boson couplings are a fundamental prediction of the standard model, resulting from the non-Abelian nature of the theory. Therefore, experimental tests of the couplings are of foremost importance. We introduce the experimental results by reviewing the effective Lagrangian formalism, the indirect constraints on the couplings from low-energy experiments, and the expected values of the couplings in theories beyond the standard model. Finally, we consider the prospects for future measurements.

W Boson Physics at the Fermilab Tevatron

We present electroweak physics results from the D0 and CDF experiments using data from p \bar p collisions at \sqrt s = 1.8 TeV. Measurements of the cross sections times branching ratios for W and Z production, the inclusive width of the W boson and the W boson mass are presented. Direct tests of the WWγand WWZ trilinear gauge boson couplings are also presented based on studies of diboson production.

Electroweak Physics Results from the DZero Detector at Fermilab

We present electroweak physics results from the DZero experiment using data from collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, concentrating on single W and Z production cross sections and the production of electroweak gauge boson pairs. The inclusive cross sections times branching ratios for W and Z production have been measured and are used to determine the inclusive width of the W boson. Direct tests of the WWγand WWZ trilinear gauge boson couplings are derived from the study of diboson production. These measurements test the non-abelian self couplings of the W, Z and photon, one of the most direct consequences of the SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y gauge symmetry. We present measurements of the WWγcoupling based on p pbar --> l νγ+ X and limits on anomalous WWZ and WWγcouplings based on searches for p \pbar --> W^+ W^- + X --> l l' ν\nubar + X and p \pbar --> WW / WZ + X --> e ν+ jets + X. We also present limits on the ZZγand Zγγcouplings based on p pbar --> l^+ l^- γ+ X events.
