Discussing semigroup bounds with resolvent estimates

The purpose of this paper is to revisit the proof of the Gearhart-Pr\"uss-Huang-Greiner theorem for a semigroup $S(t)$, following the general idea of the proofs that we have seen in the literature and to get an explicit estimate on the operator norm of $S(t)$ in terms of bounds on the resolvent of the generator. In \cite{HelSj} by the first two authors, this was done and some applications in semiclassical analysis were given. Some of these results have been subsequently published in two books written by the two first authors \cite{He1,Sj2}. A second work \cite{HeSj21} by the first two authors presents new improvements partially motivated by a paper of D. Wei \cite{W}. In this third paper, we continue the discussion on whether the aforementioned results are optimal, and whether one can improve these results through iteration. Numerical computations will illustrate some of the abstract results.

The shifted harmonic oscillator and the hypoelliptic Laplacian on the circle

We study the semigroup generated by the hypoelliptic Laplacian on the circle and the maximal bounded holomorphic extension of this semigroup. Using an orthogonal decomposition into harmonic oscillators with complex shifts, we describe the domain of this extension and we show that boundedness in a half-plane corresponds to absolute convergence of the expansion of the semigroup in eigenfunctions. This relies on a novel integral formula for the spectral projections which also gives asymptotics for Laguerre polynomials in a large-parameter regime.

Concentration of eigenfunctions of Schroedinger operators

We consider the limit measures induced by the rescaled eigenfunctions of single-well Schr\"odinger operators. We show that the limit measure is supported on $[-1,1]$ and with the density proportional to $(1-|x|^\beta)^{-1/2}$ when the non-perturbed potential resembles $|x|^\beta$, $\beta >0$, for large $x$, and with the uniform density for super-polynomially growing potentials. We compare these results to analogous results in orthogonal polynomials and semiclassical defect measures.

Dirac brushes (or, the fractional Fourier transform of Dirac combs)

In analogy with the Poisson summation formula, we identify when the fractional Fourier transform, applied to a Dirac comb in dimension one, gives a discretely supported measure. We describe the resulting series of complex multiples of delta functions, and through either the metaplectic representation of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or the Bargmann transform, we see that the the identification of these measures is equivalent to the functional equation for the Jacobi theta functions. In tracing the values of the antiderivative in certain small-angle limits, we observe Euler spirals, and on a smaller scale, these spirals are made up of Gauss sums which give the coefficient in the aforementioned functional equation.

The elliptic evolution of non-self-adjoint degree-2 Hamiltonians

We study the relationship between the classical Hamilton flow and the quantum Schr\"odinger evolution where the Hamiltonian is a degree-2 complex-valued polynomial. When the flow obeys a strict positivity condition equivalent to compactness of the evolution operator, we find geometric expressions for the $L^2$ operator norm and a singular-value decomposition of the Schr\"odinger evolution, using the Hamilton flow. The flow also gives a geometric composition law for these operators, which correspond to a large class of integral operators with nondegenerate Gaussian kernels.

The norm of the non-self-adjoint harmonic oscillator semigroup

We identify the norm of the semigroup generated by the non-self-adjoint harmonic oscillator acting on $L^2(\Bbb{R})$, for all complex times where it is bounded. We relate this problem to embeddings between Gaussian-weighted spaces of holomorphic functions, and we show that the same technique applies, in any dimension, to the semigroup $e^{-tQ}$ generated by an elliptic quadratic operator acting on $L^2(\Bbb{R}^n)$. The method used --- identifying the exponents of sharp products of Mehler formulas --- is elementary and is inspired by more general works of L. H\"ormander, A. Melin, and J. Sj\"ostrand.

Short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect for semigroups generated by quadratic operators

We study accretive quadratic operators with zero singular spaces. These degenerate non-selfadjoint differential operators are known to be hypoelliptic and to generate contraction semigroups which are smoothing in the Schwartz space for any positive time. In this work, we study the short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect induced by these semigroups. We show that these short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect depend on the directions of the phase space, and that this dependence can be nicely understood through the structure of the singular space. As a byproduct of these results, we derive sharp subelliptic estimates for accretive quadratic operators with zero singular spaces pointing out that the loss of derivatives with respect to the elliptic case also depends on the phase space directions according to the structure of the singular space. Some applications of these results are then given to the study of degenerate hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators and degenerate hypoelliptic Fokker-Planck operators.

From semigroups to subelliptic estimates for quadratic operators

Using an approach based on the techniques of FBI transforms, we give a new simple proof of the global subelliptic estimates for non-selfadjoint non-elliptic quadratic differential operators, under a natural averaging condition on the Weyl symbols of the operators, established by the second author. The loss of the derivatives in the subelliptic estimates depends directly on algebraic properties of the Hamilton maps of the quadratic symbols. Using the FBI point of view, we also give accurate smoothing estimates of Gelfand-Shilov type for the associated heat semigroup in the limit of small times.

Singular-value decomposition of solution operators to model evolution equations

We consider evolution equations generated by quadratic operators admitting a decomposition in creation-annihilation operators without usual ellipticity-type hypotheses; this class includes hypocoercive model operators. We identify the singular value decomposition of their solution operators with the evolution generated by an operator of harmonic oscillator type, and in doing so derive exact characterizations of return to equilibrium and regularization for any complex time.

On weak and strong solution operators for evolution equations coming from quadratic operators

We identify, through a change of variables, solution operators for evolution equations with generators given by certain simple first-order differential operators acting on Fock spaces. This analysis applies, through unitary equivalence, to a broad class of supersymmetric quadratic multiplication-differentiation operators acting on $L^2(\Bbb{R}^n)$ which includes the elliptic and weakly elliptic quadratic operators. We demonstrate a variety of sharp results on boundedness, decay, and return to equilibrium for these solution operators, connecting the short-time behavior with the range of the symbol and the long-time behavior with the eigenvalues of their generators. This is particularly striking when it allows for the definition of solution operators which are compact and regularizing for large times for certain operators whose spectrum is the entire complex plane.

Spectral projections and resolvent bounds for partially elliptic quadratic differential operators

We study resolvents and spectral projections for quadratic differential operators under an assumption of partial ellipticity. We establish exponential-type resolvent bounds for these operators, including Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators with quadratic potentials. For the norms of spectral projections for these operators, we obtain complete asymptotic expansions in dimension one, and for arbitrary dimension, we obtain exponential upper bounds and the rate of exponential growth in a generic situation. We furthermore obtain a complete characterization of those operators with orthogonal spectral projections onto the ground state.

Non-elliptic quadratic forms and semiclassical estimates for non-selfadjoint operators

We consider a class of pseudodifferential operators with a doubly characteristic point, where the quadratic part of the symbol fails to be elliptic but obeys an averaging assumption. Under suitable additional assumptions, semiclassical resolvent estimates are established, where the modulus of the spectral parameter is allowed to grow slightly more rapidly than the semiclassical parameter.

Resolvent estimates for non-selfadjoint operators with double characteristics

We study resolvent estimates for non-selfadjoint semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics. Assuming that the quadratic approximation along the double characteristics is elliptic, we obtain polynomial upper bounds on the resolvent in a suitable region inside the pseudospectrum.
