Near optimal spectral gaps for line bundles on hyperbolic three-manifolds

We prove that there exists a sequence of two-torsion Hermitian line bundles on closed hyperbolic three-manifolds, with volume tending to infinity, and with asymptotically optimal smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian. The proof stems from recent advances in the program of strongly convergent unitary representations of discrete groups.

Apollonian random manifolds and their bass notes

We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on two models of random hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, related to the Apollonian group and the super Apollonian group. We determine explicit spectral gaps for these random orbifolds. Moreover, we use our model to investigate the bass note spectrum of the set of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.

Eigenvalues of Maximal Abelian Covers

We fully characterize the eigenvalues (flat bands) of the maximal abelian cover of a finite multi-graph in terms of the combinatorics of the base graph. This solves a problem of Higuchi and Nomura (2009, Problem 6.11). We use our new criterion to prove that the maximal abelian cover of any regular multi-graph has no eigenvalues, thereby proving a conjecture of (ibid., Conjecture 6.12). In an appendix, we relate our criterion for eigenvalues of the maximal abelian cover to an existing criterion for eigenvalues of the universal cover.

Spectral gap with polynomial rate for Weil-Petersson random surfaces

We show that there is a constant $c>0$ such that a genus $g$ closed hyperbolic surface, sampled at random from the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson probability measure, has Laplacian spectral gap at least $\frac{1}{4}-O\left(\frac{1}{g^{c}}\right)$ with probability tending to $1$ as $g\to\infty$. This extends and gives a new proof of a recent result of Anantharaman and Monk proved in the series of works [2,3,5,4,6]. Our approach adapts the polynomial method for the strong convergence of random matrices, introduced by Chen, Garza-Vargas, Tropp and van Handel [19], and its generalization to the strong convergence of surface groups by Magee, Puder and van Handel [41], to the Laplacian on Weil-Petersson random hyperbolic surfaces.

Spectral gap with polynomial rate for random covering surfaces

In this note we show that the recent work of Magee, Puder and van Handel [MPvH25] can be applied to obtain an optimal spectral gap result with polynomial error rate for uniformly random covers of closed hyperbolic surfaces. Let $X$ be a closed hyperbolic surface. We show there exists $b,c>0$ such that a uniformly random degree-$n$ cover $X_{n}$ of $X$ has no new Laplacian eigenvalues below $\frac{1}{4}-cn^{-b}$ with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to\infty$.

A note on Puder's generalised co-growth formula for trees

In this note, we prove a conjecture of Puder on an extension of the co-growth formula to any non-negative function defined on a bi-regular tree. A key component of our proof is the establishment of a resolvent identity, which serves as an operator version of the co-growth formula. We also provide a simpler proof of Puder's generalised co-growth formula for the regular tree.

Small eigenvalues of hyperbolic surfaces with many cusps

We study topological lower bounds on the number of small Laplacian eigenvalues on hyperbolic surfaces. We show that for any $a>0$, there exists $b>0$ such that if $g<an$ and $X$ has genus $g$ and $n$ cusps, then $X$ has at least $b(2g+n-2)$ small eigenvalues. This saturates the sharp upper bound $2g+n-2$ of Otal and Rosas up to a constant multiplicative factor.

Large-$n$ asymptotics for Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces

We study the geometry and spectral theory of Weil-Petersson random surfaces with genus-$g$ and $n$ cusps in the large-$n$ limit. We show that for a random hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ with $n$ large, the number of small Laplacian eigenvalues is linear in $n$ with high probability. By work of Otal and Rosas [41], this result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant. We also study the relative frequency of simple and non-simple closed geodesics, showing that on random surfaces with many cusps, most closed geodesics with lengths up to $\log(n)$ scales are non-simple. Our main technical contribution is a novel large-$n$ asymptotic formula for the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of genus-$g$ hyperbolic surfaces with $k$ geodesic boundary components and $n-k$ cusps with $k$ fixed, building on work of Manin and Zograf [30].

Strongly convergent unitary representations of right-angled Artin groups

We prove using a novel random matrix model that all right-angled Artin groups have a sequence of finite dimensional unitary representations that strongly converge to the regular representation. We deduce that this result applies also to: the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic manifold that is either three dimensional or standard arithmetic type, any Coxeter group, and any word-hyperbolic cubulated group. One strong consequence of these results is that any closed hyperbolic three-manifold has a sequence of finite dimensional flat Hermitian vector bundles with bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian asymptotically at least 1.

Short geodesics and small eigenvalues on random hyperbolic punctured spheres

We study the number of short geodesics and small eigenvalues on Weil-Petersson random genus zero hyperbolic surfaces with $n$ cusps in the regime $n\to\infty$. Inspired by work of Mirzakhani and Petri \cite{Mi.Pe19}, we show that the random multi-set of lengths of closed geodesics converges, after a suitable rescaling, to a Poisson point process with explicit intensity. As a consequence, we show that the Weil-Petersson probability that a hyperbolic punctured sphere with $n$ cusps has at least $k=o(n)$ arbitrarily small eigenvalues tends to $1$ as $n\to\infty$.

Quantum Unique Ergodicity for Cayley graphs of quasirandom groups

A finite group $G$ is called $C$-quasirandom (by Gowers) if all non-trivial irreducible complex representations of $G$ have dimension at least $C$. For any unit $\ell^{2}$ function on a finite group we associate the quantum probability measure on the group given by the absolute value squared of the function. We show that if a group is highly quasirandom, in the above sense, then any Cayley graph of this group has an orthonormal eigenbasis of the adjacency operator such that the quantum probability measures of the eigenfunctions put close to the correct proportion of their mass on subsets of the group that are not too small.

The tangle-free hypothesis on random hyperbolic surfaces

This article introduces the notion of L-tangle-free compact hyperbolic surfaces, inspired by the identically named property for regular graphs. Random surfaces of genus g, picked with the Weil-Petersson probability measure, are (a log g)-tangle-free for any a < 1. This is almost optimal, for any surface is (4 log g + O(1))-tangled. We establish various geometric consequences of the tangle-free hypothesis at a scale L, amongst which the fact that closed geodesics of length < L/4 are simple, disjoint and embedded in disjoint hyperbolic cylinders of width $\ge$ L/4.

Expansivity and unique shadowing

Let $f\colon X\to X$ be a continuous function on a compact metric space. We show that shadowing is equivalent to backwards shadowing and two-sided shadowing when the map $f$ is onto. Using this we go on to show that, for expansive surjective maps the properties shadowing, two-sided shadowing, s-limit shadowing and two-sided s-limit shadowing are equivalent. We show that $f$ is positively expansive and has shadowing if and only if it has unique shadowing (i.e.\ each pseudo-orbit is shadowed by a unique point), extending a result implicit in Walter's proof that positively expansive maps with shadowing are topologically stable. We use the aforementioned result on two-sided shadowing to find an equivalent characterisation of shadowing and expansivity and extend these results to the notion of $n$-expansivity due to Morales.

Delocalisation of eigenfunctions on large genus random surfaces

We prove that eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact hyperbolic surface delocalise in terms of a geometric parameter dependent upon the number of short closed geodesics on the surface. In particular, we show that an $L^2$ normalised eigenfunction restricted to a measurable subset of the surface has squared $L^2$-norm $\varepsilon>0$, only if the set has a relatively large size -- exponential in the geometric parameter. For random surfaces with respect to the Weil-Petersson probability measure, we then show, with high probability as $g\to\infty$, that the size of the set must be at least the genus of the surface to some power dependent upon the eigenvalue and $\varepsilon$.

Short geodesic loops and $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions on large genus random surfaces

We give upper bounds for $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on compact hyperbolic surfaces in terms of a parameter depending on the growth rate of the number of short geodesic loops passing through a point. When the genus $g \to +\infty$, we show that random hyperbolic surfaces $X$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson volume have with high probability at most one such loop of length less than $c \log g$ for small enough $c > 0$. This allows us to deduce that the $L^p$ norms of $L^2$ normalised eigenfunctions on $X$ are a $O(1/\sqrt{\log g})$ with high probability in the large genus limit for any $p > 2 + \varepsilon$ for $\varepsilon > 0$ depending on the spectral gap $\lambda_1(X)$ of $X$, with an implied constant depending on the eigenvalue and the injectivity radius.

Preservation of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems

We look at the preservation of various notions of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems under inverse limits, products, factor maps and the induced maps for symmetric products and hyperspaces. The shadowing properties we consider are the following: shadowing, h-shadowing, eventual shadowing, orbital shadowing, strong orbital shadowing, the first and second weak shadowing properties, limit shadowing, s-limit shadowing, orbital limit shadowing and inverse shadowing.

On inverse shadowing

We give a reformulation of the inverse shadowing property with respect to the class of all pseudo-orbits. This reformulation bears witness to the fact that the property is far stronger than might initially seem. We give some implications of this reformulation, in particular showing that systems with inverse shadowing are not sensitive. Finally we show that, on compact spaces, inverse shadowing is equivalent to a finite version of it.
