A Dual-Cam Parallel Elastic Actuator with Shared Gas-Spring Compensation for Humanoid Ankles

To improve torque capacity and energy efficiency of humanoid ankles, this paper proposes a 2-DoF parallel elastic actuator (PEA). The main novelty of the proposed design lies in its dual-cam, single-gas-spring architecture, which enables torque compensation in both pitch and roll using a shared elastic element, thereby improving structural compactness compared with conventional multi-element compensation schemes. By leveraging parallel gas springs and customized cam modules, the proposed architecture provides dual-axis torque assistance tailored to specific task requirements. The second key contribution is the formulation of a coupled 2-DoF mathematical model that explicitly captures the interdependence between the two compensation units through the shared spring. Based on this model, an optimization-based design framework is developed to synthesize customized cam profiles from prescribed torque references, establishing a systematic link from task requirements to hardware realization. The complete lower-leg CAD integration is presented in detail. Static FEA and kinematic simulations confirm the design's feasibility and torque-relief effectiveness. The results highlight the proposed design as a compact, customizable solution for 2-DoF humanoid ankle torque compensation.

KYON: Semi-Modular Wheel-Legged Quadruped With Agile Bimanual Capability

This paper presents KYON, a hybrid wheel-legged quadruped robot equipped with a bimanual upper body for loco-manipulation tasks. The platform features a semi-modular design with a reconfigurable lower legs, enabling both wheeled and legged locomotion depending on the environment. A design approach that places actuators in the base and uses transmission mechanisms reduces distal inertia, improving agility and dynamic performance. The robot integrates a whole-body control framework together with a reinforcement learning based policy to handle nonlinear dynamics and enhance robustness to disturbances for the execution of locomotion and manipulation tasks, independently. Experimental results demonstrate effective dynamic locomotion and bimanual manipulation, validating the platform's capability to operate in complex and unstructured scenarios.

Phasic Diversity Optimization for Population-Based Reinforcement Learning

Reviewing the previous work of diversity Rein-forcement Learning, diversity is often obtained via an augmented loss function, which requires a balance between reward and diversity.Generally, diversity optimization algorithms use Multi-armed Bandits algorithms to select the coefficient in the pre-defined space. However, the dynamic distribution of reward signals for MABs or the conflict between quality and diversity limits the performance of these methods. We introduce the Phasic Diversity Optimization (PDO) algorithm, a Population-Based Training framework that separates reward and diversity training into distinct phases instead of optimizing a multi-objective function. In the auxiliary phase, agents with poor performance diversified via determinants will not replace the better agents in the archive. The decoupling of reward and diversity allows us to use an aggressive diversity optimization in the auxiliary phase without performance degradation. Furthermore, we construct a dogfight scenario for aerial agents to demonstrate the practicality of the PDO algorithm. We introduce two implementations of PDO archive and conduct tests in the newly proposed adversarial dogfight and MuJoCo simulations. The results show that our proposed algorithm achieves better performance than baselines.
