Gauge-invariant implementation of the Abelian Higgs model on optical lattices

We present a gauge-invariant effective action for the Abelian Higgs model (scalar electrodynamics) with a chemical potential $μ$ on a 1+1 dimensional lattice. This formulation provides an expansion in the hopping parameter $κ$ which we test with Monte Carlo simulations for a broad range of the inverse gauge coupling $β_{pl}$ and small values of the scalar self-coupling $λ$. In the opposite limit of infinitely large $λ$, the partition function can be written as a traced product of local tensors which allows us to write exact blocking formulas. Their numerical implementation requires truncations but there is no sign problem for arbitrary values of $μ$. We show that the time continuum limit of the blocked transfer matrix can be obtained numerically and, in the limit of infinite $β_{pl}$ and with a spin-1 truncation, the small volume energy spectrum is identical to the low energy spectrum of a two-species Bose-Hubbard model in the limit of large onsite repulsion. We extend this procedure for finite $β_{pl}$ and derive a spin-1 approximation of the Hamiltonian. It involves new terms corresponding to transitions among the two species in the Bose-Hubbard model. We propose an optical lattice implementation involving a ladder structure.

Intranight optical variability of radio-quiet BL Lacertae objects

Aims: Intranight variation (or microvariation) is a common phenomenon of radio-loud BL Lac objects. However, it is not clear whether the recently found radio-quiet BL Lac objects have the same properties. The occurrence rate of intranight variation is helpful in distinguishing the mechanism of the continuum of radio-quiet BL Lac objects. Methods: We conducted a photometric monitoring of 8 radio-quiet BL Lac objects by the Xinglong 2.16m and Lijiang 2.4m telescopes. The differential light curves are calculated between each target and two comparison stars. To quantify the variation, the significance of variation is examined by a scaled $F$-test. Results: No significant variation is found in the 11 sessions of light curves of 8 radio-quiet BL Lac objects (one galactic source is excluded). The lack of microvariation in radio-quiet BL Lac objects is consistent with the detection rate of microvariation in normal radio-quiet AGNs, but much lower than for radio-loud AGNs. This result indicates that the continua of the radio-quiet BL Lac objects are not dominated by jets that will induce frequent microvariations.

Resonant Scanning with Large Field of View Reduces Photobleaching and Enhances Fluorescence Yield in STED Microscopy

Photobleaching is a major limitation of superresolution Stimulated Depletion Emission (STED) microscopy. Fast scanning has long been considered an effective means to reduce photobleaching in fluorescence microscopy, but a careful quantitative study of this issue is missing. In this paper, we show that the photobleaching rate in STED microscopy is slowed down and fluorescence yield is enhanced by scanning with high linear speed, enabled by the large field of view in our custom-built resonant-scanning STED microscope. The effect of scanning speed on photobleaching and fluorescence yield is more remarkable at higher levels of depletion laser irradiance, and virtually disappears in conventional confocal microscopy. With a depletion irradiance of >0.2 GW$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$ (time average), we were able to extend the fluorescence survival time of the Atto 647N dye by ~80% with an 8-fold wider field of view. We confirm that STED Photobleaching is primarily caused by the depletion light acting upon the excited fluorophores. Experimental data agree with a theoretical model. Our results encourage further increasing linear scanning speed for photobleaching reduction in STED microscopy.

Etching-free transfer of wafer-scale MoS2 films

How to transfer MoS2 films from growth substrates onto target substrates is a critical issue for its practical applications. However, it remains a great challenge to avoid the sample degradation and substrate destruction, since current transfer method inevitably employs a wet chemical etching process. Herein, we develop an etching-free transfer method for transferring wafer-scale MoS2 films onto arbitrary substrates by using ultrasonication. Briefly, the collapse of ultrasonication-generated microbubbles at the interface between polymer-coated MoS2 film and substrates induce sufficient force to delaminate the MoS2 films. Using this method the MoS2 films can be transferred from all the substrates (silica, mica, strontium titanate, sapphire) and remains the original sample morphology and quality. This method guarantees a simple transfer process, allows the reuse of growth substrates, without the presence of any hazardous etchants. The etching-free transfer method may promote the broad applications of MoS2 in electronics, optoelectronics and catalysis.

Jet Properties of GeV-Selected Radio-Loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies and Possible Connection to Their Disk and Corona

The observed spectral energy distributions of five GeV-selected narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are fitted with a model including the radiation ingredients from the relativistic jet, the accretion disk, and the corona. We compare the properties of these GeV NLS1 galaxies with flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and radio-quiet (RQ) Seyfert galaxies, and explore possible hints for jet-disk/corona connection. Our results show that the radiation physics and the jet properties of the GeV NLS1 galaxies resemble that of FSRQs. The luminosity variations of PMN J0948+0022 and 1H 0323+342 at GeV band is tightly correlated with the beaming factor (δ), similar to that observed in FSRQ 3C 279. The accretion disk luminosities and the jet powers of the GeV NLS1 galaxies cover both the ranges of FSRQs and BL Lacs. With detection of bright corona emission in 1H 0323+342, we show that the ratio of the corona luminosity (L_corona) to the accretion disk luminosity (L_d) is marginally within the high end of this ratio distribution for a RQ Seyfert galaxy sample, and the variation of jet luminosity may connect with Lcorona. However, it is still unclear whether a system with a high L_corona/L_d ratio prefers to power a jet.

Photosphere emission in the X-Ray Flares of Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts and Implications for the Fireball Properties

X-ray flares of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are usually observed in the soft X-ray range and the spectral coverage is limited. In this paper, we present an analysis of 32 GRB X-ray flares that are simultaneously observed by both BAT and XRT on board the Swift mission, so a joint spectral analysis with a wider spectral coverage is possible. Our results show that the joint spectra of 19 flares are fitted with the absorbed single power-law or the Band function models. More interestingly, the joint spectra of the other 13 X-ray flares are fitted with the absorbed single power-law model plus a black body (BB) component. Phenomenally, the observed spectra of these 13 flares are analogous to several GRBs with a thermal component, but only with a much lower temperature of $kT=1\sim 3$ keV. Assuming that the thermal emission is the photosphere emission of the GRB fireball, we derive the fireball properties of the 13 flares that have redshift measurements, such as the bulk Lorentz factor $Γ_{\rm ph}$ of the outflow. The derived $Γ_{\rm ph}$ range from $50$ to $150$ and a relation of $Γ_{\rm ph}$ to the thermal emission luminosity is found. It is consistent with the $Γ_0-L_{\rm iso}$ relation that are derived for the prompt gamma-ray emission. We discuss the physical implications of these results within the content of jet composition and radiation mechanism of GRBs and X-ray flares.

Distributions of Gamma-Ray Bursts and Blazars in the $L_{\rm p}-E_{\rm p}$ Plane and Possible Implications for their Radiation Physics

We present a spectral analysis for a sample of redshift known GRBs observed with {\em Fermi}/GBM. Together with the results derived from our systematical spectral energy distribution modeling with the leptonic models for a {\em Fermi}/LAT blazar sample, we compare the distributions of the GRBs and the blazars by plotting the synchrotron peak luminosity ($L_{\rm s}$) and the corresponding peak photon energy $E_{\rm s}$ of blazars in the $L_{\rm p}-E_{\rm p}$ plane of GRBs, where $L_{\rm p}$ and $E_{\rm p}$ are the peak luminosity and peak photon energy of the GRB time-integrated $νf_ν$ spectrum, respectively. The GRBs are in the high-$L_{\rm p}$, high-$E_{\rm p}$ corner of the plane and a tight $L_{\rm p}-E_{\rm p}$ relation is found, i.e., $L_{\rm p}\propto E_{\rm p}^{2.13^{+0.54}_{-0.46}}$. Both FSRQs and LBLs are clustered in the low-$E_{\rm p}$, low-$L_{\rm p}$ corner. IBLs and HBLs have $E_{\rm s}\sim 2\times 10^{-3} - 10^{2}$ keV and $L_{\rm s} \sim 10^{44} - 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$, but no dependence of $L_{\rm s}$ on $E_{\rm s}$ is found. We show that the tight $L_p-E_p$ relation of GRBs is potentially explained with the synchrotron radiation of fast-cooling electrons in a highly magnetized ejecta, and the weak anti-correlation of $L_{\rm s}-E_{\rm s}$ for FSRQs and LBLs may be attributed to synchrotron radiation of slow-cooling electrons in a moderately magnetized ejecta. The distributions of IBLs and HBLs in the $L_{\rm p}-E_{\rm p}$ plane may be interpreted with synchrotron radiation of fast-cooling electrons in a matter-dominated ejecta. These results may present a unified picture for the radiation physics of relativistic jets in GRBs and blazars within the framework of the leptonic synchrotron radiation models.

Relativistic Jet Properties of GeV-TeV Blazars and Possible Implications for the Jet Formation, Composition, and Cavity Kinematics

We fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a GeV-TeV FSRQ sample with the leptonic model. Their gamma_min of the relativistic electron distributions, which significantly affect the estimates of the jet properties, are constrained, with a typical value of 48. Their jet power, magnetized parameter, radiation efficiency, and jet production/radiation rates per central black hole (BH) mass are derived and compared to that of BL Lacs. We show that he FSRQ jets may be dominated by the Poynting flux and have a high radiation efficiency, whereas the BL Lac jets are likely dominated by particles and have a lower radiation efficiency than FSRQs. Being different from BL Lacs, the jet powers of FSRQs are proportional to their central BH masses. The jet production and radiation rates of the FSRQs distribute in narrow ranges and are correlated with each other, whereas no similar feature is found for the BL Lacs. We also show that the jet power is correlated with the cavity kinetic power, and the magnetic field energy in the jets may provide the cavity kinetic energy of FSRQs and the kinetic energy of cold protons in the jets may be crucial for cavity kinetic energy of BL Lacs. We suggest that the dominating formation mechanism of FSRQ jets may be the BZ process, but BL Lac jets may be produced via the BP and/or BZ processes, depending on the structures and accretion rates of accretion disks.

A Hybrid Pricing Framework for TV White Space Database

According to the recent rulings of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), TV white spaces (TVWS) can now be accessed by secondary users (SUs) after a list of vacant TV channels is obtained via a geo-location database. Proper business models are therefore essential for database operators to manage geo-location databases. Database access can be simultaneously priced under two different schemes: the registration scheme and the service plan scheme. In the registration scheme, the database reserves part of the TV bandwidth for registered White Space Devices (WSDs). In the service plan scheme, the WSDs are charged according to their queries. In this paper, we investigate the business model for the TVWS database under a hybrid pricing scheme. We consider the scenario where a database operator employs both the registration scheme and the service plan scheme to serve the SUs. The SUs' choices of different pricing schemes are modeled as a non-cooperative game and we derive distributed algorithms to achieve Nash Equilibrium (NE). Considering the NE of the SUs, the database operator optimally determines pricing parameters for both pricing schemes in terms of bandwidth reservation, registration fee and query plans.

Empirical modelling of the BLASTPol achromatic half-wave plate for precision submillimetre polarimetry

A cryogenic achromatic half-wave plate (HWP) for submillimetre astronomical polarimetry has been designed, manufactured, tested, and deployed in the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). The design is based on the five-slab Pancharatnam recipe and it works in the wavelength range 200-600 micron, making it the broadest-band HWP built to date at (sub)millimetre wavelengths. The frequency behaviour of the HWP has been fully characterised at room and cryogenic temperatures with incoherent radiation from a polarising Fourier transform spectrometer. We develop a novel empirical model, complementary to the physical and analytical ones available in the literature, that allows us to recover the HWP Mueller matrix and phase shift as a function of frequency and extrapolated to 4K. We show that most of the HWP non-idealities can be modelled by quantifying one wavelength-dependent parameter, the position of the HWP equivalent axes, which is then readily implemented in a map-making algorithm. We derive this parameter for a range of spectral signatures of input astronomical sources relevant to BLASTPol, and provide a benchmark example of how our method can yield improved accuracy on measurements of the polarisation angle on the sky at submillimetre wavelengths.

Photonic spin Hall effect in topological insulators

In this paper we theoretically investigate the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) of a Gaussian beam reflected from the interface between air and topological insulators (TIs). The photonic SHE is attributed to spin-orbit coupling and manifests itself as in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splitting. We reveal that the spin-orbit coupling effect in TIs can be routed by adjusting the axion angle variations. Unlike the transverse spin-dependent splitting, we find that the in-plane one is sensitive to the axion angle. It is shown that the polarization structure in magneto-optical Kerr effect is significantly altered due to the spin-dependent splitting in photonic SHE. We theoretically propose a weak measurement method to determine the strength of axion coupling by probing the in-plane splitting of photonic SHE.

Competitive MAC under Adversarial SINR

This paper considers the problem of how to efficiently share a wireless medium which is subject to harsh external interference or even jamming. While this problem has already been studied intensively for simplistic single-hop or unit disk graph models, we make a leap forward and study MAC protocols for the SINR interference model (a.k.a. the physical model). We make two contributions. First, we introduce a new adversarial SINR model which captures a wide range of interference phenomena. Concretely, we consider a powerful, adaptive adversary which can jam nodes at arbitrary times and which is only limited by some energy budget. The second contribution of this paper is a distributed MAC protocol which provably achieves a constant competitive throughput in this environment: we show that, with high probability, the protocol ensures that a constant fraction of the non-blocked time periods is used for successful transmissions.

Evolutionary search for new high-k dielectric materials: methodology and applications to hafnia-based oxides

High-k dielectric materials are important as gate oxides in microelectronics and as potential dielectrics for capacitors. In order to enable computational discovery of novel high-k dielectric materials, we propose a fitness model (energy storage density) that includes the dielectric constant, bandgap, and intrinsic breakdown field. This model, used as fitness function in conjunction with first-principles calculations and global optimization evolutionary algorithm USPEX, efficiently leads to practically important results. We found a number of high-fitness structures of SiO2 and HfO2, some of which correspond to known phases and some are new. The results allow us to propose characteristics (genes) common to high-fitness structures - these are the coordination polyhedra and their degree of distortion. Our variable-composition searches in the HfO2-SiO2 system uncovered several high-fitness states. This hybrid algorithm opens up a new avenue of discovering novel high-k dielectrics with both fixed and variable compositions, and will speed up the process of materials discovery.

Radiation Mechanism and Jet Composition of Gamma-Ray Bursts and GeV-TeV selected Radio Loud Active Galactic Nuclei

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and GeV-TeV selected radio loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are compared based on our systematic modeling of the observed spectral energy distributions of a sample of AGNs with a single-zone leptonic model. We show that the correlation between the jet power (P_{jet}) and the prompt gamma-ray luminosity (L_{jet}) of GRBs is consistent, within the uncertainties, with the correlation between jet power and the synchrotron peak luminosity (L_{s, jet}) of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Their radiation efficiencies (\varepsilon) are also comparable (>10% for most sources), which increase with the bolometric jet luminosity (L_{bol,jet}) for FSRQs and with the L_{jet} for GRBs with similar power-law indices. BL Lacs do not follow the P_{jet}-L_{s, jet} relation of FSRQs. They have lower \varepsilon and L_{bol, jet} values than FSRQs, and a tentative L_{bol, jet}-\varepsilon relation is also found, with a power-law index being different from that of the FSRQs. The magnetization parameters (σ) of FSRQs are averagely larger than that of BL Lacs. They are anti-correlated with $\varepsilon$ for the FSRQs, but positive correlated with \varepsilon for the BL Lacs. GeV Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies potentially share similar properties with FSRQs. Based on the analogy between GRBs and FSRQs, we suggest that the prompt gamma-ray emission of GRBs is likely produced by synchrotron process in a magnetized jet with high radiation efficiency, similar to FSRQs. The jets of BL Lacs, on the other hand, are less efficient and are likely more matter dominated.

A Comprehensive Study of Gamma-Ray Burst Optical Emission: II. Afterglow Onset and Late Re-Brightening Components

We continue our systematic statistical study of various components in gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical lightcurves. We decompose the early onset bump and the late re-brightening bump with empirical fits and analyze their statistical properties. Among the 146 GRBs that have well-sampled optical lightcurves, the onset and re-brightening bumps are observed in 38 and 26 GRBs, respectively. It is found that the typical rising and decaying slopes for both the onset and re-brightening bumps are ~1.5 and -1.15, respectively. No early onset bumps in the X-ray band are detected to be associated with the optical onset bumps, while an X-ray re-brightening bump is detected for half of the re-brightening optical bumps. The peak luminosity is anti-correlated with the peak time, L_p\propto t_{p}^{-1.81+/-0.32} and L_p\propto t_{p}^{-0.83+/-0.17} for the onset and re-brightening bumps, respectively. Both L_p and the isotropic energy release of the onset bumps are correlated with E_{γ, iso}, whereas no similar correlation is found for the re-brightening bumps. Taking the onset bumps as probes for the properties of the fireballs and their ambient medium, we find that the typical power-law index of the relativistic electrons is 2.5 and the medium density profile behaves as n\propto r^{-1} within the framework of the synchrotron external shock models. With the medium density profile obtained from our analysis, we also confirm the correlation between initial Lorentz factor (Γ_0) and E_{γ, iso} in our previous work. The jet component that produces the re-brightening bump seems to be on-axis and independent of the prompt emission jet component. Its typical kinetic energy budget would be about one order of magnitude larger than the prompt emission component, but with a lower Γ_0, typically several tens.

Spectral Variation of NLS1 Galaxy PMN J0948+0022

Four well-sampled spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of PMN J0948+0022 are fitted with the syn+SSC+EC model to derive the physical parameters of its jets and to investigate the spectral variations of its SEDs. A tentative correlation between the peak luminosity L_c and peak frequency nu_c of its inverse Compton (IC) bump is found in both the observer and co-moving frames, indicating that the variations of luminosity are accompanied with the spectral shift. A correlation between L_c and delta is found, and thus the magnification of the external photon field by the bulk motion of the radiation regions is an essential reason for the spectral variation since the IC bump of PMN J0948+0022 is dominated by the EC process.

Blazar Anti-Sequence of Spectral Variation within individual Blazars: Cases for Mrk 501 and 3C 279

The jet properties of Mrk 501 and 3C 279 are derived by fitting the broadband spectral energy distributions with the lepton models. The derived gamma_b (the break Lorenz factor of the electron distribution) are 10^4-10^6 for Mrk 501 and 200~600 for 3C 279 and the magnetic field strength (B) of Mrk 501 is usually one order of magnitude lower than that of 3C 279, but their Doppler factors (delta) are comparable. A spectral variation feature that the peak luminosity is correlated with the peak frequency, which is opposite to the blazar sequence, is observed in the two sources. We find that (1) the peak luminosities of the two bumps in SEDs for Mrk 501 depend on gamma_b in both the observer and co-moving frames, but they are not correlated with B and delta; (2)the luminosity variation of 3C 279 is dominated by the external Compton (EC) peak and its peak luminosity is correlated with gamma_b and delta, but anti-correlated with B. These results suggest that gamma_b may govern the spectral variation of Mrk 501 and delta and B would be responsible for the spectral variation of 3C 279. The narrow distribution of gamma_b and the correlation of gamma_b and B in 3C 279 would be due to the cooling by the EC process and the strong magnetic field. Based on our brief discussion, we propose that this spectral variation feature may be originated from the instability of the corona but not from the variation of the accretion rate as that for the blazar sequence.

A new artificial material approach for flat THz frequency lenses

Stacked layers of metal meshes embedded in a dielectric substrate are routinely used for providing spectral selection at THz frequencies. Recent work has shown that particular geometries allow the refractive index to be tuned to produce practical artificial materials. Here we show that by spatially grading in the plane of the mesh we can manufacture a Graded Index (GrIn) thin flat lens optimized for use at THz frequencies. Measurements on a prototype lens show we are able to obtain the parabolic profile of a Woods type lens which is dependent only on the mesh parameters. This technique could realize other exotic optical devices.
