Active Hierarchical Exploration with Stable Subgoal Representation Learning

Goal-conditioned hierarchical reinforcement learning (GCHRL) provides a promising approach to solving long-horizon tasks. Recently, its success has been extended to more general settings by concurrently learning hierarchical policies and subgoal representations. Although GCHRL possesses superior exploration ability by decomposing tasks via subgoals, existing GCHRL methods struggle in temporally extended tasks with sparse external rewards, since the high-level policy learning relies on external rewards. As the high-level policy selects subgoals in an online learned representation space, the dynamic change of the subgoal space severely hinders effective high-level exploration. In this paper, we propose a novel regularization that contributes to both stable and efficient subgoal representation learning. Building upon the stable representation, we design measures of novelty and potential for subgoals, and develop an active hierarchical exploration strategy that seeks out new promising subgoals and states without intrinsic rewards. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in continuous control tasks with sparse rewards.

A Globally Convergent Proximal Newton-Type Method in Nonsmooth Convex Optimization

The paper proposes and justifies a new algorithm of the proximal Newton type to solve a broad class of nonsmooth composite convex optimization problems without strong convexity assumptions. Based on advanced notions and techniques of variational analysis, we establish implementable results on the global convergence of the proposed algorithm as well as its local convergence with superlinear and quadratic rates. For certain structured problems, the obtained local convergence conditions do not require the local Lipschitz continuity of the corresponding Hessian mappings that is a crucial assumption used in the literature to ensure a superlinear convergence of other algorithms of the proximal Newton type. The conducted numerical experiments of solving the $l_1$ regularized logistic regression model illustrate the possibility of applying the proposed algorithm to deal with practically important problems.

GeV $γ$-ray Emission of Compact Steep-Spectrum Source 4C +39.23B

Thirteen yr observation data of 4FGL J0824.9+3915 with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope (Fermi/LAT) are analyzed for revisiting whether 4C +39.23B, a compact steep-spectrum (CSS) source closed to a flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +39.23A in the $γ$-ray emitting region of 4FGL J0824.9+3915, is a $γ$-ray emitter. We find that the time-integrated $γ$-ray emission of 4FGL J0824.9+3915 is overwhelmingly dominated by 4C +39.23A. It shows significant variability at a 6.7$σ$ confidence level and the average $γ$-ray flux in the 0.1--300 GeV energy band is $(1.60\pm 0.15)\times10^{-8}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ with a power-law photon spectral index of $2.48\pm0.05$. During MJD 57500--58500, 4FGL J0824.9+3915 is in a low state with a steady $γ$-ray flux. Analyzed the Fermi/LAT observation data in this time interval, it is found that the TS values of the $γ$-ray emission from 4C +39.23A and 4C +39.23B are $\sim5$ and $\sim 31$, respectively, indicating that the $γ$-ray emission in this time interval is dominated by the CSS 4C +39.23B. The derived average flux in this time interval for 4C +39.23B is $(9.40\pm4.10)\times 10^{-9}$ ph cm $^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ with $Γ_γ=2.45\pm0.17$. Attributing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 4C +39.23B to the radiations from its core and extended region, we show that the SED can be represented with a two-zone leptonic model. Its $γ$-ray emission is contributed by the core region. The derived magnetic field strength and Doppler boosting factor of the core are 0.13 G and 6.5. Comparing 4C +39.23B with other $γ$-emitting CSSs and compact symmetric objects (CSOs) in the $Γ_γ-L_γ$ plane, it resembles CSSs.

Simulation of a Xe-based X-ray Polarimeter at 10-30 keV

Polarization detection of X-rays is a non-negligible topic to astrophysical observation. Many polarization detection methods have been well developed for X-rays in the energy range below 10~keV, while the detection at 10-30~keV is rarely discussed. This paper presents a simulation study of a Xe-based gas pixel detector, which can achieve the polarization detection of X-rays at 10-30~keV. To verify the emission angle distribution of photoelectrons, different electromagnetic models in Geant4 were investigated. After a necessary modification by considering the missing factor when sampling the emission angle, a good agreement can be achieved. Moreover, the detection capability of 20~keV polarized photons was discussed and the modulation factor could be 43\%.

A General Descent Aggregation Framework for Gradient-based Bi-level Optimization

In recent years, a variety of gradient-based methods have been developed to solve Bi-Level Optimization (BLO) problems in machine learning and computer vision areas. However, the theoretical correctness and practical effectiveness of these existing approaches always rely on some restrictive conditions (e.g., Lower-Level Singleton, LLS), which could hardly be satisfied in real-world applications. Moreover, previous literature only proves theoretical results based on their specific iteration strategies, thus lack a general recipe to uniformly analyze the convergence behaviors of different gradient-based BLOs. In this work, we formulate BLOs from an optimistic bi-level viewpoint and establish a new gradient-based algorithmic framework, named Bi-level Descent Aggregation (BDA), to partially address the above issues. Specifically, BDA provides a modularized structure to hierarchically aggregate both the upper- and lower-level subproblems to generate our bi-level iterative dynamics. Theoretically, we establish a general convergence analysis template and derive a new proof recipe to investigate the essential theoretical properties of gradient-based BLO methods. Furthermore, this work systematically explores the convergence behavior of BDA in different optimization scenarios, i.e., considering various solution qualities (i.e., global/local/stationary solution) returned from solving approximation subproblems. Extensive experiments justify our theoretical results and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm for hyper-parameter optimization and meta-learning tasks. Adversarial Attack via Dual-Stage Network Erosion

Deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples, which can fool deep models by adding subtle perturbations. Although existing attacks have achieved promising results, it still leaves a long way to go for generating transferable adversarial examples under the black-box setting. To this end, this paper proposes to improve the transferability of adversarial examples, and applies dual-stage feature-level perturbations to an existing model to implicitly create a set of diverse models. Then these models are fused by the longitudinal ensemble during the iterations. The proposed method is termed Dual-Stage Network Erosion (DSNE). We conduct comprehensive experiments both on non-residual and residual networks, and obtain more transferable adversarial examples with the computational cost similar to the state-of-the-art method. In particular, for the residual networks, the transferability of the adversarial examples can be significantly improved by biasing the residual block information to the skip connections. Our work provides new insights into the architectural vulnerability of neural networks and presents new challenges to the robustness of neural networks.

Task-Oriented Convex Bilevel Optimization with Latent Feasibility

This paper firstly proposes a convex bilevel optimization paradigm to formulate and optimize popular learning and vision problems in real-world scenarios. Different from conventional approaches, which directly design their iteration schemes based on given problem formulation, we introduce a task-oriented energy as our latent constraint which integrates richer task information. By explicitly re-characterizing the feasibility, we establish an efficient and flexible algorithmic framework to tackle convex models with both shrunken solution space and powerful auxiliary (based on domain knowledge and data distribution of the task). In theory, we present the convergence analysis of our latent feasibility re-characterization based numerical strategy. We also analyze the stability of the theoretical convergence under computational error perturbation. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to verify our theoretical findings and evaluate the practical performance of our method on different applications.

Supercloseness of the NIPG method for a singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem on Shishkin mesh

In this paper, we analyze the supercloseness result of nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method on Shishkin mesh for a singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem. According to the characteristics of the solution and the scheme, a new analysis is proposed. More specifically, Gauß Lobatto interpolation and Gauß Radau interpolation are introduced inside and outside the layer, respectively. By selecting special penalty parameters at different mesh points, we further establish supercloseness of almost k + 1 order under the energy norm. Here k is the order of piecewise polynomials. Then, a simple post processing operator is constructed. In particular, a new analysis is proposed for the stability analysis of this operator. On the basis of that, we prove that the corresponding post-processing can make the numerical solution achieve higher accuracy. Finally, superconvergence can be derived under the discrete energy norm. These theoretical conclusions can be verified numerically.

Ground states of 2D tilted dipolar bosons with density-induced hopping

Motivated by recent experiments with ultracold magnetic atoms trapped in optical lattices where the orientation of atomic dipoles can be fully controlled by external fields, we study the ground state properties of dipolar bosons trapped in a two-dimensional lattice with density-induced hopping and where the dipoles are tilted along the $xz$ plane. We present ground state phase diagrams of the above system at different tilt angles. We find that, as the dipolar interaction increases, the superfluid phase at half filling factor is destroyed in favor of either a checkerboard or stripe solid phase for tilt angle $θ\lesssim 35.3^{\circ}$ or $θ\gtrsim 35.3^{\circ}$ respectively. More interesting physics happens at tilt angles $θ\gtrsim 58^{\circ}$, where we find that, as the dipolar interaction strength increases, solid phases first appear at filling factor lower than $0.5$. Moreover, unlike what observed at lower tilt angles, we find that, at half filling, a stripe supersolid intervenes between the superfluid and stripe solid phase.

Drive high power UVC-LED wafer into low-cost 4-inch era: effect of strain modulation

Ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes (UVC-LEDs) have great application in pathogen inactivation under various kinds of situations, especially in the fight against the COVID-19. Unfortunately, its epitaxial wafers are so far limited to 2-inch size, which greatly increases the cost of massive production. In this work, we report the 4-inch crack-free high-power UVC-LED wafer. This achievement relies on a proposed strain-tailored strategy, where a three-dimensional to two-dimensional (3D-2D) transition layer is introduced during the homo-epitaxy of AlN on high temperature annealed (HTA)-AlN template, which successfully drives the original compressive strain into tensile one and thus solves the challenge of realizing high quality Al$_{0.6}$Ga$_{0.4}$N layer with a flat surface. This smooth Al$_{0.6}$Ga$_{0.4}$N layer is nearly pseudomorphically grown on the strain-tailored HTA-AlN template, leading to 4-inch UVC-LED wafers with outstanding performances. Our strategy succeeds in compromising the bottlenecked contradictory in producing large-sized UVC-LED wafer on pronounced crystalline AlN template: The compressive strain in HTA-AlN allows for crack-free 4-inch wafer, but at the same time leads to a deterioration of the AlGaN morphology and crystal quality. The launch of 4-inch wafers makes the chip fabrication process of UVC-LEDs matches the mature blue one, and will definitely speed up the universal of UVC-LED in daily life.

Preparation and Fluorescent Wavelength Control of Multi-Color Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nano-Dots

It is known that, by taking advantage of heteroatom doping, the electronic states and transition channels in carbon nano-dots (CNDs) can be effectively modulated. Thus, the photoluminescence (PL) properties of CNDs can be changed. For potential applications of CNDs as advanced materials for optoelectronic devices, it is important and significant to develop the practical techniques for doping heteroatoms into CNDs. In this work, we synthesize the multi-color fluorescent by using a fast and effective microwave method where the CNDs are nitrogen-doped. We examine the influence of different ratios of the raw materials on the structure and optical properties of N-CNDs. The results show that the prepared N-CNDs can generate blue (445 nm), green (546 nm), and orange (617 nm) fluorescence or PL with the mass ratio of the raw materials at 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3, respectively. We find that the N content in N-CNDs leads to different surface/edge states in $n-π^*$ domain. Thus, the wavelength of the PL emission from N-CNDs can be tuned via controlling the N concentration doped into the CNDs. Moreover, it is shown that the intensity of the PL from N-CNDs is mainly positively related to the content of C-O groups attached on the surface/edges of the N-CNDs. This study provides an effective experimental method and technical way to improve the fluorescent emission, and to modulate the color of the PL emission from CNDs.

Local Sensing of Correlated Electrons in Dual-moiré Heterostructures using Dipolar Excitons

Moiré heterostructures are rapidly emerging as a tunable platform to study correlated electronic phenomena. Discovery of exotic quantum phases in moiré systems requires novel probes of charge and spin order. Unlike detection schemes which average over several moiré cells, local sensors can provide richer information with greater sensitivity. We study a WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterotrilayer which hosts excitons and electrons in distinct moiré lattices, and show that localized dipolar excitons are sensitive proximity charge sensors, uncovering numerous correlated electronic states at fractional fillings of the multi-orbital moiré lattice. In addition, the emission polarization can reveal the local electronic spin configuration at different fillings. Our results establish dipolar excitons as promising candidates to study emergent quantum matter and quantum magnetism in moiré crystals with higher spatial resolution.

Distributed Optimal Output Consensus of Uncertain Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems over Unbalanced Directed Networks via Output Feedback

In this note, a novel observer-based output feedback control approach is proposed to address the distributed optimal output consensus problem of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems in the normal form over unbalanced directed graphs. The main challenges of the concerned problem lie in unbalanced directed graphs and nonlinearities of multi-agent systems with their agent states not available for feedback control. Based on a two-layer controller structure, a distributed optimal coordinator is first designed to convert the considered problem into a reference-tracking problem. Then a decentralized output feedback controller is developed to stabilize the resulting augmented system. A high-gain observer is exploited in controller design to estimate the agent states in the presence of uncertainties and disturbances so that the proposed controller relies only on agent outputs. The semi-global convergence of the agent outputs toward the optimal solution that minimizes the sum of all local cost functions is proved under standard assumptions. A key feature of the obtained results is that the nonlinear agents under consideration are only required to be locally Lipschitz and possess globally asymptotically stable and locally exponentially stable zero dynamics.

Optimal Output Consensus of Heterogeneous Linear Multi-Agent Systems Over Weight-Unbalanced Directed Networks

This paper investigates the distributed optimal output consensus problem of heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems over weight-unbalanced directed networks. A novel distributed continuous-time state feedback controller is proposed to steer the outputs of all the agents to converge to the optimal solution of the global cost function. Under the standard condition that the unbalanced digraph is strongly connected and the local cost functions are strongly convex with global Lipschitz gradients, the exponential convergence of the closed-loop multi-agent system is established. Then, the proposed state feedback control law is extended to an observer-based output feedback setting. Two examples are finally provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.

MetaCURE: Meta Reinforcement Learning with Empowerment-Driven Exploration

Meta reinforcement learning (meta-RL) extracts knowledge from previous tasks and achieves fast adaptation to new tasks. Despite recent progress, efficient exploration in meta-RL remains a key challenge in sparse-reward tasks, as it requires quickly finding informative task-relevant experiences in both meta-training and adaptation. To address this challenge, we explicitly model an exploration policy learning problem for meta-RL, which is separated from exploitation policy learning, and introduce a novel empowerment-driven exploration objective, which aims to maximize information gain for task identification. We derive a corresponding intrinsic reward and develop a new off-policy meta-RL framework, which efficiently learns separate context-aware exploration and exploitation policies by sharing the knowledge of task inference. Experimental evaluation shows that our meta-RL method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on various sparse-reward MuJoCo locomotion tasks and more complex sparse-reward Meta-World tasks.

Nanometer-scale lateral p-n junctions in graphene/$α$-RuCl$_3$ heterostructures

The ability to create high-quality lateral p-n junctions at nanometer length scales is essential for the next generation of two-dimensional (2D) electronic and plasmonic devices. Using a charge-transfer heterostructure consisting of graphene on $α$-RuCl$_3$, we conduct a proof-of-concept study demonstrating the existence of intrinsic nanoscale lateral p-n junctions in the vicinity of graphene nanobubbles. Our multi-pronged experimental approach incorporates scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy ($\textit{s}$-SNOM) in order to simultaneously probe both the electronic and optical responses of nanobubble p-n junctions. Our STM and STS results reveal that p-n junctions with a band offset of more than 0.6 eV can be achieved over lateral length scale of less than 3 nm, giving rise to a staggering effective in-plane field in excess of 10$^8$ V/m. Concurrent $\textit{s}$-SNOM measurements confirm the utility of these nano-junctions in plasmonically-active media, and validate the use of a point-scatterer formalism for modeling surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Model $\textit{ab initio}$ density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate our experimental data and reveal a combination of sub-angstrom and few-angstrom decay processes dictating the dependence of charge transfer on layer separation. Our study provides experimental and conceptual foundations for the use of charge-transfer interfaces such as graphene/$α$-RuCl$_3$ to generate p-n nano-junctions.

Generic property of the partial calmness condition for bilevel programming problems

The partial calmness for the bilevel programming problem (BLPP) is an important condition which ensures that a local optimal solution of BLPP is a local optimal solution of a partially penalized problem where the lower level optimality constraint is moved to the objective function and hence a weaker constraint qualification can be applied. In this paper we propose a sufficient condition in the form of a partial error bound condition which guarantees the partial calmness condition. We analyse the partial calmness for the combined program based on the Bouligand (B-) and the Fritz John (FJ) stationary conditions from a generic point of view. Our main result states that the partial error bound condition for the combined programs based on B and FJ conditions are generic for an important setting with applications in economics and hence the partial calmness for the combined program is not a particularly stringent assumption. Moreover we derive optimality conditions for the combined program for the generic case without any extra constraint qualifications and show the exact equivalence between our optimality condition and the one by Jongen and Shikhman given in implicit form. Our arguments are based on Jongen, Jonker and Twilt's generic (five type) classification of the so-called generalized critical points for one-dimensional parametric optimization problems and Jongen and Shikhman's generic local reductions of BLPPs.
