Less Emphasis on Difficult Layer Regions: Curriculum Learning for Singularly Perturbed Convection-Diffusion-Reaction Problems

Although Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have been successfully applied in a wide variety of science and engineering fields, they can fail to accurately predict the underlying solution in slightly challenging convection-diffusion-reaction problems. In this paper, we investigate the reason of this failure from a domain distribution perspective, and identify that learning multi-scale fields simultaneously makes the network unable to advance its training and easily get stuck in poor local minima. We show that the widespread experience of sampling more collocation points in high-loss layer regions hardly help optimize and may even worsen the results. These findings motivate the development of a novel curriculum learning method that encourages neural networks to prioritize learning on easier non-layer regions while downplaying learning on harder layer regions. The proposed method helps PINNs automatically adjust the learning emphasis and thereby facilitate the optimization procedure. Numerical results on typical benchmark equations show that the proposed curriculum learning approach mitigates the failure modes of PINNs and can produce accurate results for very sharp boundary and interior layers. Our work reveals that for equations whose solutions have large scale differences, paying less attention to high-loss regions can be an effective strategy for learning them accurately.

Supercloseness of the NIPG method for a singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem on Shishkin mesh in 2D

As a popular stabilization technique, the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method has significant application value in computational fluid dynamics. In this paper, we study the NIPG method for a typical two-dimensional singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem on a Shishkin mesh. According to the characteristics of the solution, the mesh and numerical scheme, a new composite interpolation is introduced. In fact, this interpolation is composed of a vertices-edges-element interpolation within the layer and a local $L^{2}$-projection outside the layer. On the basis of that, by selecting penalty parameters on different types of interelement edges, we further obtain the supercloseness of almost $k+\frac{1}{2}$ order in an energy norm. Here $k$ is the degree of piecewise polynomials. Numerical tests support our theoretical conclusion.

Supercloseness of finite element method for a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem on Bakhvalov-type mesh in 2D

For singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems, supercloseness analysis of finite element method is still open on Bakhvalov-type meshes, especially in the case of 2D. The difficulties arise from the width of the mesh in the layer adjacent to the transition point, resulting in a suboptimal estimate for convergence. Existing analysis techniques cannot handle these difficulties well. To fill this gap, a novel interpolation is designed delicately for the first time for the smooth part of the solution, bringing about the optimal supercloseness result of almost order 2 under an energy norm for finite element method. Our theoretical result is uniformly in the singular perturbation parameter and is supported by the numerical experiments.

Supercloseness analysis of the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin method on Bakhvalov-type mesh

In this paper, we study the convergence of the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method on a Bakhvalov-type mesh for the first time. For this purpose, a new composite interpolation is designed, which solves the inherent difficulty of analysis on Bakhvalov-type meshes. More specifically, Gauss Radau interpolation and Gauss Lobatto interpolation are used outside and inside the layer, respectively. On the basis of that, by choosing the specific values of the penalty parameters at different mesh points, we derive the supercloseness of $k+1/2$th order ($k\ge 1$), and prove the convergence of optimal order in an energy norm. The theoretical conclusion is consistent with the numerical results.

A novel approach for bilevel programs based on Wolfe duality

This paper considers a bilevel program, which has many applications in practice. To develop effective numerical algorithms, it is generally necessary to transform the bilevel program into a single-level optimization problem. The most popular approach is to replace the lower-level program by its KKT conditions and then the bilevel program can be reformulated as a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC for short). However, since the MPEC does not satisfy the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification at any feasible point, the well-developed nonlinear programming theory cannot be applied to MPECs directly. In this paper, we apply the Wolfe duality to show that, under very mild conditions, the bilevel program is equivalent to a new single-level reformulation (WDP for short) in the globally and locally optimal sense. We give an example to show that, unlike the MPEC reformulation, WDP may satisfy the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification at its feasible points. We give some properties of the WDP reformulation and the relations between the WDP and MPEC reformulations. We further propose a relaxation method for solving WDP and investigate its limiting behavior. Comprehensive numerical experiments indicate that, although solving WDP directly does not perform very well in our tests, the relaxation method based on the WDP reformulation is quite efficient.

Intrinsic auxeticity and mechanical anisotropy of Si9C15 siligraphene

The graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) silicon carbide or siligraphene has attracted remarkable attentions, owing to its fascinating physical properties. Nevertheless, the first high-quality siligraphene, i.e., monolayer Si9C15 was synthesised very recently, which exhibits an excellent semiconducting behaviour. In this work, we investigate the mechanical properties of Si9C15 siligraphene by using atomistic simulations including density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Both methods confirm the existence of intrinsic negative Poisson's ratios in Si9C15 siligraphene, which, as illustrated by MD simulations, is attributed to the tension-induced de-wrinkling behaviours of its intrinsic rippled configuration. Different de-wrinkling behaviours are observed in different directions of Si9C15 siligraphene, which result in the anisotropy of its auxetic property. The fracture property of Si9C15 siligraphene is similarly anisotropic, but relatively large fracture strains are observed in different orientations, indicating the stretchability of Si9C15 siligraphene. The stretchability together with the strain-sensitive bandgap of Si9C15 siligraphene observed in DFT calculations indicates the effectiveness of strain engineering in modulating its electronic property. The combination of unique auxetic property, excellent mechanical property and tunable electronic property may render Si9C15 siligraphene a novel 2D material with multifunctional applications.

Combined approach with second-order optimality conditions for bilevel programming problems

In this paper, we propose a combined approach with second-order optimality conditions of the lower level problem to study constraint qualifications and optimality conditions for bilevel programming problems. The new method is inspired by the combined approach developed by Ye and Zhu in 2010, where the authors combined the classical first-order and the value function approaches to derive new necessary optimality conditions. In our approach, we add a second-order optimality condition to the combined program as a new constraint. We show that when all known approaches fail, adding the second-order optimality condition as a constraint makes the corresponding partial calmness condition and the resulting necessary optimality condition easier to hold. We also give some discussions on advantages and disadvantages of the combined approaches with the first-order and the second-order information.

Decision-Making Context Interaction Network for Click-Through Rate Prediction

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is crucial in recommendation and online advertising systems. Existing methods usually model user behaviors, while ignoring the informative context which influences the user to make a click decision, e.g., click pages and pre-ranking candidates that inform inferences about user interests, leading to suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a Decision-Making Context Interaction Network (DCIN), which deploys a carefully designed Context Interaction Unit (CIU) to learn decision-making contexts and thus benefits CTR prediction. In addition, the relationship between different decision-making context sources is explored by the proposed Adaptive Interest Aggregation Unit (AIAU) to improve CTR prediction further. In the experiments on public and industrial datasets, DCIN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Notably, the model has obtained the improvement of CTR+2.9%/CPM+2.1%/GMV+1.5% for online A/B testing and served the main traffic of Meituan Waimai advertising system.

rWiFiSLAM: Effective WiFi Ranging based SLAM System in Ambient Environments

In this paper, we propose rWiFiSLAM, an indoor localisation system based on WiFi ranging measurements. Indoor localisation techniques play an important role in mobile robots when they cannot access good quality GPS signals in indoor environments. Indoor localisation also has many other applications, such as rescue, smart buildings, etc. Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) have been used for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) to provide localisation services in the indoor environment as it does not rely on any other signals. Although PDR is a promising technique, it still suffers from unavoidable noise and bias from IMUs in mobile devices. Loop closure is necessary for these scenarios. In this paper, we design an efficient loop closure mechanism based on WiFi ranging measurements along with IMU measurements in a robust pose graph SLAM framework for indoor localisation. One novelty of the proposed method is that we remove the requirement of the full knowledge of the WiFi access point locations, which makes our proposed method feasible for new and/or dynamic environments. We evaluate our designed system in real environments and show the proposed method can achieve sub-meter localisation accuracy and improve the localisation performance by more than 90\% compared with the IMU based PDR.

Fluorescent property of carbon dots extracted from cigarette smoke and the application in bio-imaging

Cigarette smoke is one of the six major pollution sources in the room air. It contains large number of particles with size less than 10 nm. There exist carbon dots (CDs) in cigarette smoke which have strong fluorescence and with good bio-compatibility and low toxicity. CDs in cigarette smoke can be applied in bio-imaging which has great potential applications in the integration of cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, CDs were extracted from cigarette smoke. Then, sodium borohydride was added to CDs aqueous solution for reduction and the reduced CDs (R-CDs) were used for biological cell imaging. The results indicate that the CDs with the particle size $<$10 nm in cigarette smoke are self-assembled by the polymerizated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and ammonium nitrite which are disk nano-structure composed of $sp^2$/$sp^3$ carbon and oxygen/nitrogen groups or polymers. Sodium borohydride can reduce the carbonyl group on the surface of CDs to hydroxyl group and increase the ratio of the Na 1s ratio of the CDs from 1.86 to 7.42. The CDs can emit blue fluorescence under ultraviolet irradiation. After reduction, the R-CDS have the intensity of fluorescence 7.2 times than before and the fluorescence quantum yield increase from 6.13\% to 8.86\%. The photoluminescence (PL) wavelength of R-CDS have red-shift of 7 nm which was due to the increasing of Na element ratio. The onion epidermal cells labeled with R-CDs show that the CDs could pass through the cell wall into the cell and reach the nucleus. The cell wall and the nucleus could be clearly visualized. CDs also shows low toxicity to human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) with good biological activity. The obtained results indicate that the CDs and R-CDs have good fluorescent property which could be used as bio-imaging agent.

Symmetry Breaking in an Extended-O(2) Model

Motivated by attempts to quantum simulate lattice models with continuous Abelian symmetries using discrete approximations, we consider an extended-O(2) model that differs from the ordinary O(2) model by an explicit symmetry breaking term. Its coupling allows to smoothly interpolate between the O(2) model (zero coupling) and a $q$-state clock model (infinite coupling). In the latter case, a $q$-state clock model can also be defined for non-integer values of $q$. Thus, such a limit can also be considered as an analytic continuation of an ordinary $q$-state clock model to non-integer $q$. The phase diagram of the extended-O(2) model in the infinite coupling limit was established in our previous work, where it was shown that for non-integer $q$, there is a second-order phase transition at low temperature and a crossover at high temperature. In this work, we investigate the model at finite values of the coupling using Monte Carlo and tensor methods. The results may be relevant for configurable Rydberg-atom arrays.

Fully Distributed Continuous-Time Algorithm for Nonconvex Optimization over Unbalanced Directed Networks

This paper investigates the distributed continuous-time nonconvex optimization problem over unbalanced directed networks. The objective is to cooperatively drive all the agent states to an optimal solution that minimizes the sum of the local cost functions. Based on the topology balancing technique and adaptive control approach, a novel fully distributed algorithm is developed for each agent with neither prior global information concerning network connectivity nor convexity of local cost functions. By viewing the proposed algorithm as a perturbed system, its input-to-state stability with a vanishing perturbation is first established, and asymptotic convergence of the decision variables toward the optimal solution is then proved under the relaxed condition. A key feature of the algorithm design is that it removes the dependence on the smallest strong convexity constant of local cost functions, and the left eigenvector corresponding to the zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of unbalanced directed topologies. The effectiveness of the proposed fully distributed algorithm is illustrated with two examples.

Second-order optimality conditions for general nonconvex optimization problems and variational analysis of disjunctive systems

In this paper, we propose second-order sufficient optimality conditions for a very general nonconvex constrained optimization problem, which covers many prominent mathematical programs.Unlike the existing results in the literature, our conditions prove to be sufficient, for an essential local minimizer of second order, under merely basic smoothness and closedness assumptions on the data defining the problem. In the second part, we propose a comprehensive first- and second-order variational analysis of disjunctive systems and demonstrate how the second-order objects appearing in the optimality conditions can be effectively computed in this case.

KD-SCFNet: Towards More Accurate and Efficient Salient Object Detection via Knowledge Distillation

Most existing salient object detection (SOD) models are difficult to apply due to the complex and huge model structures. Although some lightweight models are proposed, the accuracy is barely satisfactory. In this paper, we design a novel semantics-guided contextual fusion network (SCFNet) that focuses on the interactive fusion of multi-level features for accurate and efficient salient object detection. Furthermore, we apply knowledge distillation to SOD task and provide a sizeable dataset KD-SOD80K. In detail, we transfer the rich knowledge from a seasoned teacher to the untrained SCFNet through unlabeled images, enabling SCFNet to learn a strong generalization ability to detect salient objects more accurately. The knowledge distillation based SCFNet (KDSCFNet) achieves comparable accuracy to the state-of-the-art heavyweight methods with less than 1M parameters and 174 FPS real-time detection speed. Extensive experiments demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed distillation method and SOD framework. Code and data: https://github.com/zhangjinCV/KD-SCFNet.

Uniform convergence of optimal order under a balanced norm of a local discontinuous Galerkin method on a Shishkin mesh

For singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems in 1D and 2D, we study a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a Shishkin mesh. In these cases, the standard energy norm is too weak to capture adequately the behavior of the boundary layers that appear in the solutions. To deal with this deficiency, we introduce a balanced norm stronger than the energy norm. In order to achieve optimal convergence under the balanced norm in one-dimensional case, we design novel numerical fluxes and propose a special interpolation that consists of a Gauss-Radau projection and a local $L^2$ projection. Moreover, we generalize the numerical fluxes and interpolation, and extend convergence analysis of optimal order from 1D to 2D. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical results.

Infrared scalar one-loop three point integrals in loop regularization

The infrared divergent scalar three-point integrals are evaluated by the loop regularization method. Three kinds of infrared divergent integrals, i.e., massless triangle diagram, triangle diagrams with one and two massive internal lines, are systematically evaluated by loop regularization, analytic results are obtained. According the method, the infrared divergences are regulated by the so-called sliding scale $μ_{s}$ which plays the role of infrared cutoff. The amplitudes obtained through loop regularization depend on $μ_{s}$ such that we may extract different contribution by varying $μ_{s}$. Some general results for evaluation of scale one-loop triangle diagram are also derived.

A time-based Chern number in periodically-driven systems in the adiabatic limit

To define the topology of driven systems, recent works have proposed synthetic dimensions as a way to uncover the underlying parameter space of topological invariants. Using time as a synthetic dimension, together with a momentum dimension, gives access to a synthetic 2D Chern number. It is, however, still unclear how the synthetic 2D Chern number is related to the Chern number that is defined from a parametric variable that evolves with time. Here we show that in periodically driven systems in the adiabatic limit, the synthetic 2D Chern number is a multiple of the Chern number defined from the parametric variable. The synthetic 2D Chern number can thus be engineered via how the parametric variable evolves in its own space. We justify our claims by investigating Thouless pumping in two 1D tight-binding models, a three-site chain model and a two-1D-sliding-chains model. The present findings could be extended to higher dimensions and other periodically driven configurations.

Efficient and Accurate Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI & AIM 2022 challenge: Report

Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.
