Meta-causal Learning for Single Domain Generalization

Single domain generalization aims to learn a model from a single training domain (source domain) and apply it to multiple unseen test domains (target domains). Existing methods focus on expanding the distribution of the training domain to cover the target domains, but without estimating the domain shift between the source and target domains. In this paper, we propose a new learning paradigm, namely simulate-analyze-reduce, which first simulates the domain shift by building an auxiliary domain as the target domain, then learns to analyze the causes of domain shift, and finally learns to reduce the domain shift for model adaptation. Under this paradigm, we propose a meta-causal learning method to learn meta-knowledge, that is, how to infer the causes of domain shift between the auxiliary and source domains during training. We use the meta-knowledge to analyze the shift between the target and source domains during testing. Specifically, we perform multiple transformations on source data to generate the auxiliary domain, perform counterfactual inference to learn to discover the causal factors of the shift between the auxiliary and source domains, and incorporate the inferred causality into factor-aware domain alignments. Extensive experiments on several benchmarks of image classification show the effectiveness of our method.

FRA-LSTM: A Vessel Trajectory Prediction Method Based on Fusion of the Forward and Reverse Sub-Network

In order to improve the vessel's capacity and ensure maritime traffic safety, vessel intelligent trajectory prediction plays an essential role in the vessel's smart navigation and intelligent collision avoidance system. However, current researchers only focus on short-term or long-term vessel trajectory prediction, which leads to insufficient accuracy of trajectory prediction and lack of in-depth mining of comprehensive historical trajectory data. This paper proposes an Automatic Identification System (AIS) data-driven long short-term memory (LSTM) method based on the fusion of the forward sub-network and the reverse sub-network (termed as FRA-LSTM) to predict the vessel trajectory. The forward sub-network in our method combines LSTM and attention mechanism to mine features of forward historical trajectory data. Simultaneously, the reverse sub-network combines bi-directional LSTM (BiLSTM) and attention mechanism to mine features of backward historical trajectory data. Finally, the final predicted trajectory is generated by fusing output features of the forward and reverse sub-network. Based on plenty of experiments, we prove that the accuracy of our proposed method in predicting short-term and mid-term trajectories has increased by 96.8% and 86.5% on average compared with the BiLSTM and Seq2seq. Furthermore, the average accuracy of our method is 90.1% higher than that of compared the BiLSTM and Seq2seq in predicting long-term trajectories.

Topological Defect Lines in Two Dimensional Fermionic CFTs

We consider topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional fermionic conformal field theories (CFTs). Besides inheriting all the properties of TDLs in bosonic CFTs, TDLs in fermionic CFTs could host fermionic defect operators at their endpoints and junctions. Furthermore, there is a new type of TDLs, called q-type TDLs, that have no analog in bosonic CFTs. Their distinguishing feature is an extra one-dimensional Majorana fermion living on the worldline of the TDLs. The properties of TDLs in fermionic CFTs are captured in the mathematical language of the super fusion category. We propose a classification of the rank-2 super fusion categories generalizing the $\mathbb Z_8$ classification for the anomalies of $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry. We explicitly solve the F-moves for all the nontrivial categories, and derive the corresponding spin selection rules that constrain the spectrum of the defect operators. We find the full set of TDLs in the standard fermionic minimal models and a partial set of TDLs in the two exceptional models, which give CFT realizations to the rank-2 super fusion categories. Finally, we discuss a constraint on the renormalization group flow that preserves a q-type TDL.

Cooperative Retriever and Ranker in Deep Recommenders

Deep recommender systems (DRS) are intensively applied in modern web services. To deal with the massive web contents, DRS employs a two-stage workflow: retrieval and ranking, to generate its recommendation results. The retriever aims to select a small set of relevant candidates from the entire items with high efficiency; while the ranker, usually more precise but time-consuming, is supposed to further refine the best items from the retrieved candidates. Traditionally, the two components are trained either independently or within a simple cascading pipeline, which is prone to poor collaboration effect. Though some latest works suggested to train retriever and ranker jointly, there still exist many severe limitations: item distribution shift between training and inference, false negative, and misalignment of ranking order. As such, it remains to explore effective collaborations between retriever and ranker.

DiffusionCT: Latent Diffusion Model for CT Image Standardization

Computed tomography (CT) is one of the modalities for effective lung cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The features extracted from CT images are now used to quantify spatial and temporal variations in tumors. However, CT images obtained from various scanners with customized acquisition protocols may introduce considerable variations in texture features, even for the same patient. This presents a fundamental challenge to downstream studies that require consistent and reliable feature analysis. Existing CT image harmonization models rely on GAN-based supervised or semi-supervised learning, with limited performance. This work addresses the issue of CT image harmonization using a new diffusion-based model, named DiffusionCT, to standardize CT images acquired from different vendors and protocols. DiffusionCT operates in the latent space by mapping a latent non-standard distribution into a standard one. DiffusionCT incorporates an Unet-based encoder-decoder, augmented by a diffusion model integrated into the bottleneck part. The model is designed in two training phases. The encoder-decoder is first trained, without embedding the diffusion model, to learn the latent representation of the input data. The latent diffusion model is then trained in the next training phase while fixing the encoder-decoder. Finally, the decoder synthesizes a standardized image with the transformed latent representation. The experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the performance of the standardization task using DiffusionCT.

Connectivity-Aware Contract for Incentivizing IoT Devices in Complex Wireless Blockchain

Blockchain is considered the critical backbone technology for secure and trusted Internet of Things (IoT) in the future 6G network. However, deploying a blockchain system in a complex wireless IoT network is challenging due to the limited resources, complex wireless environment, and the property of self-interested IoT devices. The existing incentive mechanism of blockchain is not compatible with the wireless IoT network. In this paper, to incentivize IoT devices to join the construction of the wireless blockchain network, we propose a multi-dimensional contract to optimize the blockchain utility while addressing the issues of adverse selection and moral hazard. Specifically, the proposed contract considers the IoT device's hash power and communication cost and especially explores the connectivity of devices from the perspective of complex network theory. We investigate the energy consumption and the block confirmation probability of the wireless blockchain network via simulations under varied network sizes and average link probability. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed contract mechanism is feasible, achieves 35% more utility than existing approaches, and increases utility by 4 times compared with the original PoW-based incentive mechanism.

Limit behavior of a class of Cantor-integers

In this paper, we study a class of Cantor-integers $\{C_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ with the base conversion function $f:\{0,\dots,m\}\to \{0,\dots,p\}$ being strictly increasing and satisfying $f(0)=0$ and $f(m)=p$. Firstly we provide an algorithm to compute the superior and inferior of the sequence $\left\{\frac{C_n}{n^α}\right\}_{n\geq 1}$ where $α=\log_{m+1}^{p+1}$, and obtain the exact values of the superior and inferior when $f$ is a class of quadratic function. Secondly we show that the sequence $\left\{\frac{C_n}{n^α}\right\}_{n\geq 1}$ is dense in the close interval with the endpoints being its inferior and superior respectively. As a consequence, (i) we get the upper and lower pointwise density $1/α$-density of the self-similar measure supported on $\mathfrak{C}$ at $0$, where $\mathfrak{C}$ is the Cantor set induced by Cantor-integers. (ii) the sequence $\{\frac{C_n}{n^α}\}_{n\geq 1}$ does not have cumulative distribution function but have logarithmic distribution functions (given by a specific Lebesgue integral). Lastly we obtain the Mellin-Perron formula for the summation function of Cantor-integers. In addition, we investigate some analytic properties of the limit function induced by Cantor-integers.

Anharmonic multiphonon origin of the valence plasmon in SrTi1-xNbxO3

Doped SrTi1-xNbxO3 exhibits superconductivity and a mid-infrared optical response reminiscent of copper-oxide superconductors. Strangely, its plasma frequency, omega_p, increases by a factor of ~3 when cooling from 300 K to 20 K, without any accepted explanation. Here, we present momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (M-EELS) measurements of SrTi1-xNbxO3 at nonzero momentum, q. We find that the infrared feature previously identified as a plasmon is present at large q in insulating SrTiO3, where it exhibits the same temperature dependence and may be identified as an anharmonic, multiphonon background. Doping with Nb increases its peak energy and total spectral weight, drawing this background to lower q where it becomes visible in IR optics experiments. We conclude that the "plasmon" in doped SrTi1-xNbxO3 is not a free-carrier mode, but a composite excitation that inherits its unusual properties from the lattice anharmonicity of the insulator.

SoccerNet 2022 Challenges Results

The SoccerNet 2022 challenges were the second annual video understanding challenges organized by the SoccerNet team. In 2022, the challenges were composed of 6 vision-based tasks: (1) action spotting, focusing on retrieving action timestamps in long untrimmed videos, (2) replay grounding, focusing on retrieving the live moment of an action shown in a replay, (3) pitch localization, focusing on detecting line and goal part elements, (4) camera calibration, dedicated to retrieving the intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters, (5) player re-identification, focusing on retrieving the same players across multiple views, and (6) multiple object tracking, focusing on tracking players and the ball through unedited video streams. Compared to last year's challenges, tasks (1-2) had their evaluation metrics redefined to consider tighter temporal accuracies, and tasks (3-6) were novel, including their underlying data and annotations. More information on the tasks, challenges and leaderboards are available on https://www.soccer-net.org. Baselines and development kits are available on https://github.com/SoccerNet.

Multivariate Sparse Group Lasso Joint Model for Radiogenomics Data

Radiogenomics is an emerging field in cancer research that combines medical imaging data with genomic data to predict patients clinical outcomes. In this paper, we propose a multivariate sparse group lasso joint model to integrate imaging and genomic data for building prediction models. Specifically, we jointly consider two models, one regresses imaging features on genomic features, and the other regresses patients clinical outcomes on genomic features. The regularization penalties through sparse group lasso allow incorporation of intrinsic group information, e.g. biological pathway and imaging category, to select both important intrinsic groups and important features within a group. To integrate information from the two models, in each model, we introduce a weight in the penalty term of each individual genomic feature, where the weight is inversely correlated with the model coefficient of that feature in the other model. This weight allows a feature to have a higher chance of selection by one model if it is selected by the other model. Our model is applicable to both continuous and time to event outcomes. It also allows the use of two separate datasets to fit the two models, addressing a practical challenge that many genomic datasets do not have imaging data available. Simulations and real data analyses demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods in the literature.

Cache-Augmented Inbatch Importance Resampling for Training Recommender Retriever

Recommender retrievers aim to rapidly retrieve a fraction of items from the entire item corpus when a user query requests, with the representative two-tower model trained with the log softmax loss. For efficiently training recommender retrievers on modern hardwares, inbatch sampling, where the items in the mini-batch are shared as negatives to estimate the softmax function, has attained growing interest. However, existing inbatch sampling based strategies just correct the sampling bias of inbatch items with item frequency, being unable to distinguish the user queries within the mini-batch and still incurring significant bias from the softmax. In this paper, we propose a Cache-Augmented Inbatch Importance Resampling (XIR) for training recommender retrievers, which not only offers different negatives to user queries with inbatch items, but also adaptively achieves a more accurate estimation of the softmax distribution. Specifically, XIR resamples items for the given mini-batch training pairs based on certain probabilities, where a cache with more frequently sampled items is adopted to augment the candidate item set, with the purpose of reusing the historical informative samples. XIR enables to sample query-dependent negatives based on inbatch items and to capture dynamic changes of model training, which leads to a better approximation of the softmax and further contributes to better convergence. Finally, we conduct experiments to validate the superior performance of the proposed XIR compared with competitive approaches.

Fast Variational AutoEncoder with Inverted Multi-Index for Collaborative Filtering

Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) has been extended as a representative nonlinear method for collaborative filtering. However, the bottleneck of VAE lies in the softmax computation over all items, such that it takes linear costs in the number of items to compute the loss and gradient for optimization. This hinders the practical use due to millions of items in real-world scenarios. Importance sampling is an effective approximation method, based on which the sampled softmax has been derived. However, existing methods usually exploit the uniform or popularity sampler as proposal distributions, leading to a large bias of gradient estimation. To this end, we propose to decompose the inner-product-based softmax probability based on the inverted multi-index, leading to sublinear-time and highly accurate sampling. Based on the proposed proposals, we develop a fast Variational AutoEncoder (FastVAE) for collaborative filtering. FastVAE can outperform the state-of-the-art baselines in terms of both sampling quality and efficiency according to the experiments on three real-world datasets.

Learning 3D Mineral Prospectivity from 3D Geological Models Using Convolutional Neural Networks: Application to a Structure-controlled Hydrothermal Gold Deposit

The three-dimensional (3D) geological models are the typical and key data source in the 3D mineral prospecitivity modeling. Identifying prospectivity-informative predictor variables from the 3D geological models is a challenging and tedious task. Motivated by the ability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn the intrinsic features, in this paper, we present a novel method that leverages CNNs to learn 3D mineral prospectivity from the 3D geological models. By exploiting the learning ability of CNNs, the presented method allows for disentangling complex correlation to the mineralization and thus opens a door to circumvent the tedious work for designing the predictor variables. Specifically, to explore the unstructured 3D geological models with the CNNs whose input should be structured, we develop a 2D CNN framework in which the geometry of geological boundary is compiled and reorganized into multi-channel images and fed into the CNN. This ensures an effective and efficient training of CNNs while allowing the prospective model to approximate the ore-forming process. The presented method is applied to a typical structure-controlled hydrothermal deposit, the Dayingezhuang gold deposit, eastern China, in which the presented method was compared with the prospectivity modeling methods using hand-designed predictor variables. The results demonstrate the presented method capacitates a performance boost of the 3D prospectivity modeling and empowers us to decrease work-load and prospecting risk in prediction of deep-seated orebodies.

On the 2-binomial complexity of the generalized Thue-Morse words

In this paper, we study the $2$-binomial complexity $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ of the generalized Thue-Morse words $\mathbf{t}_{m}$ for every integer $m\geq 3$. We obtain the exact value of $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ for every integer $n\geq m^{2}$. As a consequence, $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ is ultimately periodic with period $m^{2}$. This result partially answers a question of M. Lejeune, J. Leroy and M. Rigo [Computing the $k$-binomial complexity of the Thue-Morse word, J. Comb. Theory Ser. A, {\bf 176} (2020) 105284].

E-string Quantum Curve

In this work we study the quantisation of the Seiberg-Witten curve for the E-string theory compactified on a two-torus. We find that the resulting operator expression belongs to the class of elliptic quantum curves. It can be rephrased as an eigenvalue equation with eigenvectors corresponding to co-dimension 2 defect operators and eigenvalues to co-dimension 4 Wilson surfaces wrapping the elliptic curve, respectively. Moreover, the operator we find is a generalised version of the van Diejen operator arising in the study of elliptic integrable systems. Although the microscopic representation of the co-dimension 4 defect only furnishes an $\mathrm{SO}(16)$ flavour symmetry in the UV, we find an enhancement in the IR to representations in terms of affine $E_8$ characters. Finally, using the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the E-string BPS partition function, we give a path integral derivation of the quantum curve.

Elliptic Quantum Curves of 6d SO(N) theories

We discuss supersymmetric defects in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs with $\mathrm{SO}(N_c)$ gauge group and $N_c-8$ fundamental flavors. The codimension 2 and 4 defects are engineered by coupling the 6d gauge fields to charged free fields in four and two dimensions, respectively. We find that the partition function in the presence of the codimension 2 defect on $\mathbb{R}^4\times \mathbb{T}^2$ in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit satisfies an elliptic difference equation which quantizes the Seiberg-Witten curve of the 6d theory. The expectation value of the codimension 4 defect appearing in the difference equation is an even (under reflection) degree $N_c$ section over the elliptic curve when $N_c$ is even, and an odd section when $N_c$ is odd. We also find that RG-flows of the defects and the associated difference equations in the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N+1)$ gauge theories triggered by Higgs VEVs of KK-momentum states provide quantum Seiberg-Witten curves for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twisted compactifications of the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N)$ gauge theories.

Cross-Vendor CT Image Data Harmonization Using CVH-CT

While remarkable advances have been made in Computed Tomography (CT), most of the existing efforts focus on imaging enhancement while reducing radiation dose. How to harmonize CT image data captured using different scanners is vital in cross-center large-scale radiomics studies but remains the boundary to explore. Furthermore, the lack of paired training image problem makes it computationally challenging to adopt existing deep learning models. %developed for CT image standardization. %this problem more challenging. We propose a novel deep learning approach called CVH-CT for harmonizing CT images captured using scanners from different vendors. The generator of CVH-CT uses a self-attention mechanism to learn the scanner-related information. We also propose a VGG feature-based domain loss to effectively extract texture properties from unpaired image data to learn the scanner-based texture distributions. The experimental results show that CVH-CT is clearly better than the baselines because of the use of the proposed domain loss, and CVH-CT can effectively reduce the scanner-related variability in terms of radiomic features.

Predicting Opioid Use Disorder from Longitudinal Healthcare Data using Multi-stream Transformer

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a public health crisis costing the US billions of dollars annually in healthcare, lost workplace productivity, and crime. Analyzing longitudinal healthcare data is critical in addressing many real-world problems in healthcare. Leveraging the real-world longitudinal healthcare data, we propose a novel multi-stream transformer model called MUPOD for OUD identification. MUPOD is designed to simultaneously analyze multiple types of healthcare data streams, such as medications and diagnoses, by attending to segments within and across these data streams. Our model tested on the data from 392,492 patients with long-term back pain problems showed significantly better performance than the traditional models and recently developed deep learning models.
