Free boundary q-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes

We study the free boundary $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood processes, two probability measures on sequences of partitions. We prove that a certain observable of the free boundary $q$-Whittaker process exhibits a $(q,t)$ symmetry after a random shift, generalizing a previous result of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto, and an extension of that result due to the first author. Our proof is completely different, and as part of our proof, we find contour integral formulas for the free boundary $q$-Whittaker process. We also show a matching between certain observables in the free boundary Hall--Littlewood process and a quasi-open six vertex model, and explain how work of Finn and Vanicat gives an evaluation of a bounded sum over skew Hall--Littlewood functions as a rectangular Koornwinder polynomial.

Periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes

We study the periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes, two probability measures on sequences of partitions. We prove that a certain observable of the periodic $q$-Whittaker process exhibits a $(q,u)$ symmetry after a random shift, generalizing a previous result of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto who showed a matching between the periodic Schur and $q$-Whittaker measures, and also give a vertex model formulation of their result. As part of our proof of the $(q,u)$ symmetry, we obtain contour integral formulas for both the periodic $q$-Whittaker and Hall-Littlewood processes. We also show a matching between certain observables in the periodic Hall-Littlewood process and in a quasi-periodic stochastic six vertex model after a suitable random shift, and discuss a limit to the stationary periodic stochastic six vertex model.

Limit profile for the ASEP with one open boundary

We study the speed of convergence to equilibrium for the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a finite interval with one open boundary. We provide sharp estimates on the total-variation distance from equilibrium and verify that the limit profile undergoes a phase transition from a Gaussian to a KPZ profile.

Boundary current fluctuations for the half space ASEP and six vertex model

We study fluctuations of the current at the boundary for the half space asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the height function of the half space six vertex model at the boundary at large times. We establish a phase transition depending on the asymptotic density of particles at the boundary, with GSE and GOE limits as well as the Baik--Rains crossover distribution near the critical point. This was previously known for half space last passage percolation, and recently established for the half space log-gamma polymer and KPZ equation in the groundbreaking work of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto. The proof uses the underlying algebraic structure of these models in a crucial way to obtain exact formulas. In particular, we show a relationship between the half space six vertex model and a half space Hall--Littlewood measure with two boundary parameters, which is then matched to a free boundary Schur process via a new identity of symmetric functions. Fredholm Pfaffian formulas are established for the half space ASEP and six vertex model, indicating a hidden free fermionic structure.

Shift invariance of half space integrable models

We formulate and establish symmetries of certain integrable half space models, analogous to recent results on symmetries for models in a full space. Our starting point is the colored stochastic six vertex model in a half space, from which we obtain results on the asymmetric simple exclusion process, as well as for the beta polymer through a fusion procedure which may be of independent interest. As an application, we establish a distributional identity between the absorption time in a type $B$ analogue of the oriented swap process and last passage times in a half space, establishing the Baik--Ben Arous--P\'ech\'e phase transition for the absorption time. The proof uses Hecke algebras and integrability of the six vertex model through the Yang--Baxter and reflection equations.

Cycles in Mallows random permutations

We study cycle counts in permutations of $1,\dots,n$ drawn at random according to the Mallows distribution. Under this distribution, each permutation $\pi \in S_n$ is selected with probability proportional to $q^{\text{inv}(\pi)}$, where $q>0$ is a parameter and $\text{inv}(\pi)$ denotes the number of inversions of $\pi$. For $\ell$ fixed, we study the vector $(C_1(\Pi_n),\dots,C_\ell(\Pi_n))$ where $C_i(\pi)$ denotes the number of cycles of length $i$ in $\pi$ and $\Pi_n$ is sampled according to the Mallows distribution. Here we show that if $0 1$ there is striking difference between the behaviour of the even and the odd cycles. The even cycle counts still have linear means, and when properly rescaled tend to a multivariate Gaussian distribution. For the odd cycle counts on the other hand, the limiting behaviour depends on the parity of $n$ when $q>1$. Both $(C_1(\Pi_{2n}),C_3(\Pi_{2n}),\dots)$ and $(C_1(\Pi_{2n+1}),C_3(\Pi_{2n+1}),\dots)$ have discrete limiting distributions -- they do not need to be renormalized -- but the two limiting distributions are distinct for all $q>1$. We describe these limiting distributions in terms of Gnedin and Olshanski's bi-infinite extension of the Mallows model. We also investigate these limiting distributions, and study the behaviour of the constants involved in the Gaussian limit laws. We for example show that as $q\downarrow 1$ the expected number of 1-cycles tends to $1/2$ -- which, curiously, differs from the value corresponding to $q=1$. In addition we exhibit an interesting "oscillating" behaviour in the limiting probability measures for $q>1$ and $n$ odd versus $n$ even.

Universality for low degree factors of random polynomials over finite fields

We show that the counts of low degree irreducible factors of a random polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with independent but non-uniform coefficients behave like that of a uniform random polynomial, exhibiting a form of universality for random polynomials over finite fields. Our strongest results require various assumptions on the parameters, but we are able to obtain results requiring only $q=p$ a prime with $p\leq \exp({n^{1/13}})$ where $n$ is the degree of the polynomial. Our proofs use Fourier analysis, and rely on tools recently applied by Breuillard and Varj\'u to study the $ax+b$ process, which show equidistribution for $f(\alpha)$ at a single point. We extend this to handle multiple roots and the Hasse derivatives of $f$, which allow us to study the irreducible factors with multiplicity.

A central limit theorem for cycles of Mallows permutations

Fix $q\neq 1$, and sample $w\in S_n$ from the Mallows measure. We study the distribution of $C_i(w)$, the number of $i$-cycles, as $n$ grows large. When $q<1$, they are jointly Gaussian, and this more or less follows from known ideas, but the regime $q>1$ behaves quite differently. In particular, we show that the even cycles $C_{2i}(w)$ have a mean and variance of order $n$, and jointly converge to Gaussian random variables, while the odd cycles $C_{2i+1}(w)$ have a bounded mean and variance, and converge to $C_{2i+1}(w^{even})$ or $C_{2i+1}(w^{odd})$ for some explicit random permutations $w^{even}$ and $w^{odd}$, depending on whether $n$ is even or odd. An extension to a larger class of functions is also given. The proof utilizes a two-sided stationary regenerative process associated to Mallows permutations constructed by Gnedin and Olshanski, extending the ideas of Basu and Bhatnagar.

Card guessing and the birthday problem for sampling without replacement

Consider a uniformly random deck consisting of cards labelled by numbers from $1$ through $n$, possibly with repeats. A guesser guesses the top card, after which it is revealed and removed and the game continues. What is the expected number of correct guesses under the best and worst strategies? We establish sharp asymptotics for both strategies. For the worst case, this answers a recent question of Diaconis, Graham, He and Spiro, who found the correct order. As part of the proof, we study the birthday problem for sampling without replacement using Stein's method.

Mixing time of fractional random walk on finite fields

We study a random walk on $\mathbb{F}_p$ defined by $X_{n+1}=1/X_n+\varepsilon_{n+1}$ if $X_n\neq 0$, and $X_{n+1}=\varepsilon_{n+1}$ if $X_n=0$, where $\varepsilon_{n+1}$ are independent and identically distributed. This can be seen as a non-linear analogue of the Chung--Diaconis--Graham process. We show that the mixing time is of order $\log p$, answering a question of Chatterjee and Diaconis.

Markov chains on finite fields with deterministic jumps

We study the Markov chain on $\mathbf{F}_p$ obtained by applying a function $f$ and adding $\pm\gamma$ with equal probability. When $f$ is a linear function, this is the well-studied Chung--Diaconis--Graham process. We consider two cases: when $f$ is the extension of a rational function which is bijective, and when $f(x)=x^2$. In the latter case, the stationary distribution is not uniform and we characterize it when $p=3\pmod{4}$. In both cases, we give an almost linear bound on the mixing time, showing that the deterministic function dramatically speeds up mixing. The proofs involve establishing bounds on exponential sums over the union of short intervals.

The square and add Markov chain

Squaring and adding $\pm 1$ mod p generates a curiously intractable random walk. A similar process over the finite field $\mathbf{F}_q$ (with $q=2^d$) leads to novel connections between elementary Galois theory and probability.

A central limit theorem for descents of a Mallows permutation and its inverse

This paper studies the asymptotic distribution of descents $\des(w)$ in a permutation $w$, and its inverse, distributed according to the Mallows measure. The Mallows measure is a non-uniform probability measure on permutations introduced to study ranked data. Under this measure, permutations are weighted according to the number of inversions they contain, with the weighting controlled by a parameter $q$. The main results are a Berry-Esseen theorem for $\des(w)+\des(w^{-1})$ as well as a joint central limit theorem for $(\des(w),\des(w^{-1}))$ to a bivariate normal with a non-trivial correlation depending on $q$. The proof uses Stein's method with size-bias coupling along with a regenerative process associated to the Mallows measure.

Random walk on the symplectic forms over a finite field

Random transvections generate a walk on the space of symplectic forms on $\mathbf{F}_q^{2n}$. The main result is establishing cutoff for this Markov chain. After $n+c$ steps, the walk is close to uniform while before $n-c$, it is far from uniform. The upper bound is proved by explicitly finding and bounding the eigenvalues of the random walk. The lower bound is found by showing that the support of the walk is exponentially small if only $n-c$ steps are taken. The result can be viewed as a $q$-deformation of a result of Diaconis and Holmes on a random walk on matchings.

A characteristic map for the symmetric space of symplectic forms over a finite field

The characteristic map for the symmetric group is an isomorphism relating the representation theory of the symmetric group to symmetric functions. An analogous isomorphism is constructed for the symmetric space of symplectic forms over a finite field, with the spherical functions being sent to Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$. An analogue of parabolic induction is interpreted as a certain multiplication of symmetric functions. Applications are given to Schur-positivity of skew Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$ as well as combinatorial formulas for spherical function values.

A power series identity and Bessel-type integrals over unitary groups

In 2008, Lehner, Wettig, Guhr and Wei conjectured a power series identity and showed that it implied a determinantal formula for a Bessel-type integral over the unitary supergroup. The integral is the supersymmetric extension of Bessel-type integrals over the unitary group appearing as partition functions in quantum chromodynamics. The identity is proved by interpreting both sides as the same unitary integral, which can be computed using the Cartan decomposition. An equivalent identity of Schur functions is also given and interpreted probabilistically.

An abstract proof of the L2-singular dichotomy for orbital measures on Lie algebras and groups

Let $G$ be a compact, connected simple Lie group and $\mathfrak{g}$ its Lie algebra. It is known that if $\mu $ is any $G$-invariant measure supported on an adjoint orbit in $\mathfrak{g}$, then for each integer $k$, the $k$% -fold convolution product of $\mu $ with itself is either singular or in $% L^{2}$. This was originally proven by computations that depended on the Lie type of $\mathfrak{g}$, as well as properties of the measure. In this note, we observe that the validity of this dichotomy is a direct consequence of the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem from symplectic geometry and that, in fact, any convolution product of (even distinct) orbital measures is either singular or in $L^{2+\varepsilon }$ for some $\varepsilon >0$. An abstract transference result is given to show that the $L^{2}$-singular dichotomy holds for certain of the $G$-invariant measures supported on conjugacy classes in $G.$

The absolute continuity of convolution products of orbital measures in exceptional symmetric spaces

Let $G$ be a non-compact group, $K$ the compact subgroup fixed by a Cartan involution and assume $G/K$ is an exceptional, symmetric space, one of Cartan type $E,F $ or $G$. We find the minimal integer, $L(G),$ such that any convolution product of $L(G)$ continuous, $K$-bi-invariant measures on $G$ is absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure. Further, any product of $L(G)$ double cosets has non-empty interior. The number $L(G)$ is either $2$ or $3$% , depending on the Cartan type, and in most cases is strictly less than the rank of $G$.
