Direct Investigation of the Birefringent Optical Properties of Black Phosphorus with Picosecond Interferometry

Black phosphorus (BP) is an emerging two-dimensional semiconducting material with great potential for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications, especially owing to its unique anisotropic electrical and optical properties. Many theoretical studies have predicted the anisotropic optical properties of BP, but the direct experimental quantification remains challenging. The difficulties stem from the ease of BP's degradation when exposed to air in ambient conditions, and from the indirect nature of conventional approaches that are subject to large measurement uncertainties. This work reports a direct investigation of the birefringent optical constants of micrometer-thick BP samples with picosecond (ps) interferometry, over the wavelength range from 780 to 890 nm. In this ps-interferometry approach, an ultrathin (5 nm) platinum layer for launching acoustic waves naturally protects the BP flake from degradation. The birefringent optical constants of BP for light polarization along the two primary crystalline orientations, zigzag and armchair, are directly obtained via fitting the attenuated Brillouin scattering signals. A bi-exponential model is further proposed to analyze the BS signals for a random incident light polarization. The BP experimental results and the associated measurement sensitivity analysis demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the ps-interferometry approach for capturing the polarization-dependent optical properties of birefringent materials.

Low Gilbert Damping Constant in Perpendicularly Magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO Films with High Thermal Stability

Perpendicular magnetic materials with low damping constant and high thermal stability have great potential for realizing high-density, non-volatile, and low-power consumption spintronic devices, which can sustain operation reliability for high processing temperatures. In this work, we study the Gilbert damping constant (α) of perpendicularly magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO films with a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and superb thermal stability. The α of these PMA films annealed at different temperatures is determined via an all-optical Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect method. We find that α of these W/CoFeB/MgO PMA films decreases with increasing annealing temperature, reaches a minimum of α = 0.016 at an annealing temperature of 350 °C, and then increases to 0.024 after post-annealing at 400 °C. The minimum α observed at 350 °C is rationalized by two competing effects as the annealing temperature becomes higher: the enhanced crystallization of CoFeB and dead-layer growth occurring at the two interfaces of the CoFeB layer. We further demonstrate that α of the 400 °C-annealed W/CoFeB/MgO film is comparable to that of a reference Ta/CoFeB/MgO PMA film annealed at 300 °C, justifying the enhanced thermal stability of the W-seeded CoFeB films.

Deep Embedding Forest: Forest-based Serving with Deep Embedding Features

Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have demonstrated superior ability to extract high level embedding vectors from low level features. Despite the success, the serving time is still the bottleneck due to expensive run-time computation of multiple layers of dense matrices. GPGPU, FPGA, or ASIC-based serving systems require additional hardware that are not in the mainstream design of most commercial applications. In contrast, tree or forest-based models are widely adopted because of low serving cost, but heavily depend on carefully engineered features. This work proposes a Deep Embedding Forest model that benefits from the best of both worlds. The model consists of a number of embedding layers and a forest/tree layer. The former maps high dimensional (hundreds of thousands to millions) and heterogeneous low-level features to the lower dimensional (thousands) vectors, and the latter ensures fast serving. Built on top of a representative DNN model called Deep Crossing, and two forest/tree-based models including XGBoost and LightGBM, a two-step Deep Embedding Forest algorithm is demonstrated to achieve on-par or slightly better performance as compared with the DNN counterpart, with only a fraction of serving time on conventional hardware. After comparing with a joint optimization algorithm called partial fuzzification, also proposed in this paper, it is concluded that the two-step Deep Embedding Forest has achieved near optimal performance. Experiments based on large scale data sets (up to 1 billion samples) from a major sponsored search engine proves the efficacy of the proposed model.

X-ray Astronomical Point Sources Recognition Using Granular Binary-tree SVM

The study on point sources in astronomical images is of special importance, since most energetic celestial objects in the Universe exhibit a point-like appearance. An approach to recognize the point sources (PS) in the X-ray astronomical images using our newly designed granular binary-tree support vector machine (GBT-SVM) classifier is proposed. First, all potential point sources are located by peak detection on the image. The image and spectral features of these potential point sources are then extracted. Finally, a classifier to recognize the true point sources is build through the extracted features. Experiments and applications of our approach on real X-ray astronomical images are demonstrated. comparisons between our approach and other SVM-based classifiers are also carried out by evaluating the precision and recall rates, which prove that our approach is better and achieves a higher accuracy of around 89%.

A Data-driven Approach for Furniture and Indoor Scene Colorization

We present a data-driven approach that colorizes 3D furniture models and indoor scenes by leveraging indoor images on the internet. Our approach is able to colorize the furniture automatically according to an example image. The core is to learn image-guided mesh segmentation to segment the model into different parts according to the image object. Given an indoor scene, the system supports colorization-by-example, and has the ability to recommend the colorization scheme that is consistent with a user-desired color theme. The latter is realized by formulating the problem as a Markov random field model that imposes user input as an additional constraint. We contribute to the community a hierarchically organized image-model database with correspondences between each image and the corresponding model at the part-level. Our experiments and a user study show that our system produces perceptually convincing results comparable to those generated by interior designers.

Study of semileptonic $\bar{B}^* \to P \ell \barν_\ell$ decays

In anticipation of abundant $B^*$ data samples at high-luminosity heavy-flavor experiments in the future, the tree-dominated semileptonic $\bar{B}^*_{u,d,s} \to P \ell^- \barν_\ell$ $(P=D\,,D_s\,,π\,,K)$ decays are studied within the Standard Model. After a detailed calculation of the helicity amplitudes, the theoretical predictions for branching fraction~(decay rate), lepton spin asymmetry, forward-backward asymmetry and ratio $R_D^{\ast(L)}$ are firstly presented. It is found that the CKM-favored $\bar{B}^* \to D \ell^- \barν_\ell$ decays have relatively large branching fractions of ${\cal O}(10^{-9})$$\sim$${\cal O}(10^{-7})$, and are in the scope of running LHC and forthcoming SuperKEKB/Belle-II experiments.

The decay of $Λ_b\rightarrow p~K^-$ in QCD factorization approach

With only the tree level operator, the decay of $Λ_b\rightarrow pK$ is predicted to be one order smaller than the experimental data. The QCD penguin effects should be taken into account. In this paper, we explore the one-loop QCD corrections to the decay of $Λ_b\to pK$ within the framework of QCD factorization approach. For the baryon system, the diquark approximation is adopted. The transition hadronic matrix elements between $Λ_b$ and $p$ are calculated in the light front quark model. The branching ratio of $Λ_b\rightarrow pK$ is predicted to be about $4.85\times 10^{-6}$ which is consistent with experimental data $(4.9\pm 0.9)\times 10^{-6}$. The CP violation is about 5\% in theory.

A Chandra Study of the Image Power Spectra of 41 Cool Core and Non-Cool Core Galaxy Clusters

In this work we propose a new diagnostic to segregate cool core (CC) clusters from non-cool core (NCC) clusters by studying the two-dimensional power spectra of the X-ray images observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory. Our sample contains 41 members ($z=0.01\sim 0.54$), which are selected from the Chandra archive when a high photon count, an adequate angular resolution, a relatively complete detector coverage, and coincident CC-NCC classifications derived with three traditional diagnostics are simultaneously guaranteed. We find that in the log-log space the derived image power spectra can be well represented by a constant model component at large wavenumbers, while at small wavenumbers a power excess beyond the constant component appears in all clusters, with a clear tendency that the excess is stronger in CC clusters. By introducing a new CC diagnostic parameter, i.e., the power excess index (PEI), we classify the clusters in our sample and compare the results with those obtained with three traditional CC diagnostics. We find that the results agree with each other very well. By calculating the PEI values of the simulated clusters, we find that the new diagnostic works well at redshifts up to 0.5 for intermediately sized and massive clusters with a typical Chandra or XMM pointing observation. The new CC diagnostic has several advantages over its counterparts, e.g., it is free of the effects of the commonly seen centroid shift of the X-ray halo caused by merger event, and the corresponding calculation is straightforward, almost irrelevant to the complicated spectral analysis.

Probing the R-parity violating supersymmetric effects in the exclusive b\to c\ell^-\barν_\ell decays

Motivated by recent results from the LHCb, BABAR and Belle collaborations on B\to D^{(*)}\ell^-\barν_\ell decays, which significantly deviate from the Standard Model and hint the possible new physics beyond the Standard Model, we probe the R-parity violating supersymmetric effects in B^-_c\to \ell^-\barν_\ell and B\to D^{(*)}\ell^-\barν_\ell decays. We find that (i) \mathcal{B}(B^-_c\to e^- \barν_e) and \mathcal{B}(B^-_c\toμ^-\barν_μ) are sensitive to the constrained slepton exchange couplings; (ii) the normalized forward-backward asymmetries of B\to De^-\barν_{e} decays have been greatly affected by the constrained slepton exchange couplings, and their signs could be changed; (iii) all relevant observables in the exclusive b\to cτ^-\barν_τdecays and the ratios \mathcal{R}(D^{(*)}) are sensitive to the slepton exchange coupling, \mathcal{R}(D^*) could be enhanced by the constrained slepton exchange coupling to reach each 95\% confidence level experimental range from BABAR, Belle and LHCb, but it could not reach the lower limit of the 95\% confidence level experimental average. Our results in this work could be used to probe R-parity violating effects, and will correlate with searches for direct supersymmetric signals at the running LHCb and the forthcoming Belle-II.

Revealing the Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity of Black Phosphorus using the Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect

Black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a direct-bandgap semiconducting material with great application potentials in electronics, photonics, and energy conversion. Experimental characterization of the anisotropic thermal properties of BP, however, is extremely challenging due to the lack of reliable and accurate measurement techniques to characterize anisotropic samples that are micrometers in size. Here, we report measurement results of the anisotropic thermal conductivity of bulk BP along three primary crystalline orientations, using the novel time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) with enhanced measurement sensitivities. Two-dimensional beam-offset TR-MOKE signals from BP flakes yield the thermal conductivity along the zigzag crystalline direction to be 84 ~ 101 W/(m*K), nearly three times as large as that along the armchair direction (26 ~ 36 W/(m*K)). The through-plane thermal conductivity of BP ranges from 4.3 to 5.5 W/(m*K). The first-principles calculation was performed for the first time to predict the phonon transport in BP both along the in-plane zigzag and armchair directions and along the through-plane direction. This work successfully unveiled the fundamental mechanisms of anisotropic thermal transport along the three crystalline directions in bulk BP, as demonstrated by the excellent agreement between our first-principles-based theoretical predictions and experimental characterizations on the anisotropic thermal conductivities of bulk BP.

A Chandra Study of Radial Temperature Profiles of the Intra-Cluster Medium in 50 Galaxy Clusters

In order to investigate the spatial distribution of the ICM temperature in galaxy clusters in a quantitative way and probe the physics behind, we analyze the X-ray spectra of a sample of 50 galaxy clusters, which were observed with the Chandra ACIS instrument in the past 15 years, and measure the radial temperature profiles out to $0.45r_{500}$. We construct a physical model that takes into account the effects of gravitational heating, thermal history (such as radiative cooling, AGN feedback, and thermal conduction) and work done via gas compression, and use it to fit the observed temperature profiles by running Bayesian regressions. The results show that in all cases our model provides an acceptable fit at the 68% confidence level. To further validate this model we select nine clusters that have been observed with both Chandra (out to $\gtrsim 0.3r_{500}$) and Suzaku (out to $\gtrsim 1.5r_{500}$), fit their Chandra spectra with our model, and compare the extrapolation of the best-fits with the Suzaku measurements. We find that the model profiles agree with the Suzaku results very well in seven clusters. In the rest two clusters the difference between the model and observation is possibly caused by local thermal substructures. Our study also implies that for most of the clusters the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium is safe out to at least $0.5r_{500}$, and the non-gravitational interactions between dark matter and its luminous counterpart is consistent with zero.

High-T_c superconductivity in ultrathin Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+x down to halfunit-cell thickness by protection with graphene

High-T_c superconductors confined to two dimension exhibit novel physical phenomena, such as superconductor-insulator transition. In the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+x (Bi2212) model system, despite extensive studies, the intrinsic superconducting properties at the thinness limit have been difficult to determine. Here we report a method to fabricate high quality single-crystal Bi2212 films down to half-unit-cell thickness in the form of graphene/Bi2212 van der Waals heterostructure, in which sharp superconducting transitions are observed. The heterostructure also exhibits a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic due to the Dirac nature of the graphene band structure. More interestingly, although the critical temperature remains essentially the same with reduced thickness of Bi2212, the slope of the normal state T-linear resistivity varies by a factor of 4-5, and the sheet resistance increases by three orders of magnitude, indicating a surprising decoupling of the normal state resistance and superconductivity. The developed technique is versatile, applicable to investigate other two-dimensional (2D) superconducting materials.

Decays $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}\ell^+\ell^-$ and $D^0\to \ell^+\ell^-$ in the MSSM with and without R-parity

We study the rare decays $D^+\to π^{+}\ell^+\ell^-$, $D^+_s\to K^{+}\ell^+\ell^-$ and $D^0\to \ell^+\ell^-(\ell=e,μ)$ in the minimal supersymmetic standard model with and without R-parity. Using the strong constraints on relevant supersymmetric parameters from $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing and $K^+\to π^+ν\barν$ decay, we examine constrained supersymmetry contributions to relevant branching ratios, direct CP violations and ratios of $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}μ^+μ^-$ and $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}e^+e^-$ decay rates. We find that both R-parity conserving LR as well as RL mass insertions and R-parity violating squark exchange couplings have huge effects on the direct CP violations of $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}\ell^+\ell^-$, moreover, the constrained LR and RL mass insertions still have obvious effects on the ratios of $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}μ^+μ^-$ and $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}e^+e^-$ decay rates. The direct CP asymmetries and the ratios of $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}μ^+μ^-$ and $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}e^+e^-$ decay rates are very sensitive to both moduli and phases of relevant supersymmetric parameters. In addition, the differential direct CP asymmetries of $D^+_{(s)}\to π(K)^{+}\ell^+\ell^-$ are studied in detail.

Probing the R-parity violating supersymmetric effects in the exclusive $c\to d/s\ellν_\ell$ decays

A lot of branching ratios of the exclusive $c \to d/s\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) decays have been quite accurately measured by CLEO-c, BELLE, BABAR, BES(I,II,III), ALEPH and MARKIII collaborations. We probe the R-parity violating supersymmetric effects in the exclusive $c \to d/s\ellν_\ell$ decays. From the latest experimental measurements, we obtain new upper limits on the relevant R-parity violating coupling parameters within the decays, and many upper limits are obtained for the first time. Using the constrained new parameter spaces, we predict the R-parity violating effects on the observables, which have not been measured or have not been well measured yet. We find that the R-parity violating effects due to slepton exchange could be large on the branching ratios of $D_{d/s}\to eν_e$ decays and the normalized forward-backward asymmetries of $D_{u/d}\to π/K \ellν_\ell$ as well as $D_s\to K \ellν_\ell$ decays, and all branching ratios of the relevant semileptonic $D$ decays are sensitive to squark exchange couplings. Our results in this work could be used to probe new physics effects in the leptonic decays as well as the semileptonic decays, and will correlate with searches for direct supersymmetric signals at LHC and BESIII.

All-optical Hall effect by the dynamic toroidal moment in a cavity-based metamaterial

Dynamic dipolar toroidal response is demonstrated by an optical plasmonic metamaterial composed of double disks. This response with a hotspot of localized E-field concentration is a well-behaved toroidal cavity mode that exhibits a large Purcell factor due to its deep-subwavelength mode volume. All-optical Hall effect (photovoltaic) due to this optical toroidal moment is demonstrated numerically, in mimicking the magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic systems. The result shows a promising avenue to explore various optical phenomena associated with this intriguing dynamic toroidal moment.

Toroidal dipole response in a multifold double-ring metamaterial

The toroidal response is numerically investigated in a multifold double-ring metamaterials at the antibonding magnetic-dipole mode (i.e., antiparallel magnetic dipoles in one double-ring fold). This intriguing toroidal resonance in metamaterials is considered as a result of the magnetoelectric effect due to the broken balance of the electric near-field environment. We demonstrate that the toroidal dipole response in metamaterials can improve the quality factor of the resonance spectrum. In viewing of the design flexibility on the double-ring geometry, such toroidal metamaterials will offer advantages in application potentials of toroidal dipolar moment.

Hopf bifurcation analysis in a dual model of Internet congestion control algorithm with communication delay

This paper focuses on the delay induced Hopf bifurcation in a dual model of Internet congestion control algorithms which can be modeled as a time-delay system described by a one-order delay differential equation (DDE). By choosing communication delay as the bifurcation parameter, we demonstrate that the system loses its stability and a Hopf bifurcation occurs when communication delay passes through a critical value. Moreover, the bifurcating periodic solution of system is calculated by means of perturbation methods. Discussion of stability of the periodic solutions involves the computation of Floquet exponents by considering the corresponding Poincare -Lindstedt series expansion. Finally, numerical simulations for verify the theoretical analysis are provided.

Controlling Delay-induced Hopf bifurcation in Internet congestion control system

This paper focuses on Hopf bifurcation control in a dual model of Internet congestion control algorithms which is modeled as a delay differential equation (DDE). By choosing communication delay as a bifurcation parameter, it has been demonstrated that the system loses stability and a Hopf bifurcation occurs when communication delay passes through a critical value. Therefore, a time-delayed feedback control method is applied to the system for delaying the onset of undesirable Hopf bifurcation. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations confirm that the delayed feedback controller is efficient in controlling Hopf bifurcation in Internet congestion control system. Moreover, the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determinated by applying the center manifold theorem and the normal form theory.
