AOSO-LogitBoost: Adaptive One-Vs-One LogitBoost for Multi-Class Problem

This paper presents an improvement to model learning when using multi-class LogitBoost for classification. Motivated by the statistical view, LogitBoost can be seen as additive tree regression. Two important factors in this setting are: 1) coupled classifier output due to a sum-to-zero constraint, and 2) the dense Hessian matrices that arise when computing tree node split gain and node value fittings. In general, this setting is too complicated for a tractable model learning algorithm. However, too aggressive simplification of the setting may lead to degraded performance. For example, the original LogitBoost is outperformed by ABC-LogitBoost due to the latter's more careful treatment of the above two factors. In this paper we propose techniques to address the two main difficulties of the LogitBoost setting: 1) we adopt a vector tree (i.e. each node value is vector) that enforces a sum-to-zero constraint, and 2) we use an adaptive block coordinate descent that exploits the dense Hessian when computing tree split gain and node values. Higher classification accuracy and faster convergence rates are observed for a range of public data sets when compared to both the original and the ABC-LogitBoost implementations.

Temperature-dependent Cross Sections for Charmonium Dissociation in Collisions with Pions and Rhos in Hadronic Matter

Meson-charmonium dissociation reactions governed by the quark interchange are studied with temperature-dependent quark potentials. Quark-antiquark relative-motion wave functions and masses of charmonia and charmed mesons are determined by the central spin-independent part of the potentials or by the central spin-independent part and a smeared spin-spin interaction. The prominent temperature dependence of the masses is found. Based on the potentials, the wave functions, and the meson masses, we obtain temperature-dependent cross sections for fifteen pion-charmonium and rho-charmonium dissociation reactions. The numerical cross sections are parametrized for future applications in hadronic matter. The particular temperature dependence of the J/psi bound state leads to unusual behavior of the cross sections for endothermic J/psi dissociation reactions. The quantum numbers of psi' and chi_c can not make their difference in mass in the temperature region 0.6T_c < T < T_c, but can make the psi' dissociation different from the chi_c dissociation.

Adsorption of Externally Stretched Two-Dimensional Flexible and Semi-flexible Polymers near an Attractive Wall

We study analytically a model of a two dimensional, partially directed, flexible or semiflexible polymer, attached to an attractive wall which is perpendicular to the preferred direction. In addition, the polymer is stretched by an externally applied force. We find that the wall has a dramatic effect on the polymer. For wall attraction smaller than the non-sequential nearest neighbor attraction, the fraction of monomers at the wall is zero and the model is the same as that of a polymer without a wall. However, for greater than, the fraction of monomers at the wall undergoes a first order transition from unity at low temperature and small force, to zero at higher temperatures and forces. We present phase diagram for this transition. Our results are confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulations.

Ground-State Entropy of the Random Vertex-Cover Problem

Counting the number of ground states for a spin-glass or NP-complete combinatorial optimization problem is even more difficult than the already hard task of finding a single ground state. In this paper the entropy of minimum vertex-covers of random graphs is estimated through a set of iterative equations based on the cavity method of statistical mechanics. During the iteration both the cavity entropy contributions and cavity magnetizations for each vertex are updated. This approach overcomes the difficulty of iterative divergence encountered in the zero temperature first-step replica-symmetry-breaking (1RSB) spin-glass theory. It is still applicable when the 1RSB mean-field theory is no longer stable. The method can be extended to compute the entropies of ground-states and metastable minimal-energy states for other random-graph spin-glass systems.

Condensation in a zero range process on weighted scale-free networks

We study the condensation phenomenon in a zero range process on weighted scale-free networks in order to show how the weighted transport influences the particle condensation. Instead of the approach of grand canonical ensemble which is generally used in a zero range process, we introduce an alternate approach of the mean field equations to study the dynamics of particle transport. We find that the condensation on scale-free network is easier to occur in the case of weighted transport than in the case of weight-free. In the weighted transport, especially, a dynamical condensation is even possible for the case of no interaction among particles, which is impossible in the case of weight-free.

Simulating the collapse transition of a two-dimensional semiflexible lattice polymer

It has been revealed by mean-field theories and computer simulations that the nature of the collapse transition of a polymer is influenced by its bending stiffness $ε_{\rm b}$. In two dimensions, a recent analytical work demonstrated that the collapse transition of a partially directed lattice polymer is always first-order as long as $ε_{\rm b}$ is positive [H. Zhou {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 158302 (2006)]. Here we employ Monte Carlo simulation to investigate systematically the effect of bending stiffness on the static properties of a 2D lattice polymer. The system's phase-diagram at zero force is obtained. Depending on $ε_{\rm b}$ and the temperature $T$, the polymer can be in one of three phases: crystal, disordered globule, or swollen coil. The crystal-globule transition is discontinuous, the globule-coil transition is continuous. At moderate or high values of $ε_{\rm b}$ the intermediate globular phase disappears and the polymer has only a discontinuous crystal-coil transition. When an external force is applied, the force-induced collapse transition will either be continuous or discontinuous, depending on whether the polymer is originally in the globular or the crystal phase at zero force. The simulation results also demonstrate an interesting scaling behavior of the polymer at the force-induced globule-coil transition.

Constraints on the DGP Universe Using Observational Hubble parameter

In this work, we use observations of the Hubble parameter from the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies and the recent detection of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) at $z_1=0.35$ to constrain the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) universe. For the case with a curvature term, we set a prior $h=0.73\pm0.03$ and the best-fit values suggest a spatially closed Universe. For a flat Universe, we set $h$ free and we get consistent results with other recent analyses.

Long-range frustration in T=0 first-step replica-symmetry-broken solutions of finite-connectivity spin glasses

In a finite-connectivity spin-glass at the zero-temperature limit, long-range correlations exist among the unfrozen vertices (whose spin values being non-fixed). Such long-range frustrations are partially removed through the first-step replica-symmetry-broken (1RSB) cavity theory, but residual long-range frustrations may still persist in this mean-field solution. By way of population dynamics, here we perform a perturbation-percolation analysis to calculate the magnitude of long-range frustrations in the 1RSB solution of a given spin-glass system. We study two well-studied model systems, the minimal vertex-cover problem and the maximal 2-satisfiability problem. This work points to a possible way of improving the zero-temperature 1RSB mean-field theory of spin-glasses.

Collapse Transition of Two-Dimensional Flexible and Semiflexible Polymers

The nature of the globule-coil transition of surface-confined polymers has been an issue of debate. Here this 2D collapse transition is studied through a partially directed lattice model. In the general case of polymers with positive bending stiffness ($Δ>0$), the collapse transition is {\em first-order}; it becomes {\em second-order} only in the limiting case of zero bending stiffness ($Δ\equiv 0$). These analytical results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. We also suggest some possible future experiments.

Numerical evaluation of a two loop diagram in the cutoff regularization

The sunset diagram of $λϕ^4$ theory is evaluated numerically in cutoff scheme and a nonzero finite term (in accordance with dimensional regularization (DR) result) is found in contrast to published calculations. This finding dramatically reduces the critical couplings for symmetry breaking in the two loop effective potential discussed in our previous work.
