UniPC: A Unified Predictor-Corrector Framework for Fast Sampling of Diffusion Models

Diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have demonstrated a very promising ability in high-resolution image synthesis. However, sampling from a pre-trained DPM is time-consuming due to the multiple evaluations of the denoising network, making it more and more important to accelerate the sampling of DPMs. Despite recent progress in designing fast samplers, existing methods still cannot generate satisfying images in many applications where fewer steps (e.g., $<$10) are favored. In this paper, we develop a unified corrector (UniC) that can be applied after any existing DPM sampler to increase the order of accuracy without extra model evaluations, and derive a unified predictor (UniP) that supports arbitrary order as a byproduct. Combining UniP and UniC, we propose a unified predictor-corrector framework called UniPC for the fast sampling of DPMs, which has a unified analytical form for any order and can significantly improve the sampling quality over previous methods, especially in extremely few steps. We evaluate our methods through extensive experiments including both unconditional and conditional sampling using pixel-space and latent-space DPMs. Our UniPC can achieve 3.87 FID on CIFAR10 (unconditional) and 7.51 FID on ImageNet 256$\times$256 (conditional) with only 10 function evaluations. Code is available at https://github.com/wl-zhao/UniPC.

D$^2$TV: Dual Knowledge Distillation and Target-oriented Vision Modeling for Many-to-Many Multimodal Summarization

Many-to-many multimodal summarization (M$^3$S) task aims to generate summaries in any language with document inputs in any language and the corresponding image sequence, which essentially comprises multimodal monolingual summarization (MMS) and multimodal cross-lingual summarization (MXLS) tasks. Although much work has been devoted to either MMS or MXLS and has obtained increasing attention in recent years, little research pays attention to the M$^3$S task. Besides, existing studies mainly focus on 1) utilizing MMS to enhance MXLS via knowledge distillation without considering the performance of MMS or 2) improving MMS models by filtering summary-unrelated visual features with implicit learning or explicitly complex training objectives. In this paper, we first introduce a general and practical task, i.e., M$^3$S. Further, we propose a dual knowledge distillation and target-oriented vision modeling framework for the M$^3$S task. Specifically, the dual knowledge distillation method guarantees that the knowledge of MMS and MXLS can be transferred to each other and thus mutually prompt both of them. To offer target-oriented visual features, a simple yet effective target-oriented contrastive objective is designed and responsible for discarding needless visual information. Extensive experiments on the many-to-many setting show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Additionally, we will contribute a many-to-many multimodal summarization (M$^3$Sum) dataset.

Understanding Translationese in Cross-Lingual Summarization

Given a document in a source language, cross-lingual summarization (CLS) aims at generating a concise summary in a different target language. Unlike monolingual summarization (MS), naturally occurring source-language documents paired with target-language summaries are rare. To collect large-scale CLS data, existing datasets typically involve translation in their creation. However, the translated text is distinguished from the text originally written in that language, i.e., translationese. In this paper, we first confirm that different approaches of constructing CLS datasets will lead to different degrees of translationese. Then we systematically investigate how translationese affects CLS model evaluation and performance when it appears in source documents or target summaries. In detail, we find that (1) the translationese in documents or summaries of test sets might lead to the discrepancy between human judgment and automatic evaluation; (2) the translationese in training sets would harm model performance in real-world applications; (3) though machine-translated documents involve translationese, they are very useful for building CLS systems on low-resource languages under specific training strategies. Lastly, we give suggestions for future CLS research including dataset and model developments. We hope that our work could let researchers notice the phenomenon of translationese in CLS and take it into account in the future.

C^2M-DoT: Cross-modal consistent multi-view medical report generation with domain transfer network

In clinical scenarios, multiple medical images with different views are usually generated simultaneously, and these images have high semantic consistency. However, most existing medical report generation methods only consider single-view data. The rich multi-view mutual information of medical images can help generate more accurate reports, however, the dependence of multi-view models on multi-view data in the inference stage severely limits their application in clinical practice. In addition, word-level optimization based on numbers ignores the semantics of reports and medical images, and the generated reports often cannot achieve good performance. Therefore, we propose a cross-modal consistent multi-view medical report generation with a domain transfer network (C^2M-DoT). Specifically, (i) a semantic-based multi-view contrastive learning medical report generation framework is adopted to utilize cross-view information to learn the semantic representation of lesions; (ii) a domain transfer network is further proposed to ensure that the multi-view report generation model can still achieve good inference performance under single-view input; (iii) meanwhile, optimization using a cross-modal consistency loss facilitates the generation of textual reports that are semantically consistent with medical images. Extensive experimental studies on two public benchmark datasets demonstrate that C^2M-DoT substantially outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in all metrics. Ablation studies also confirmed the validity and necessity of each component in C^2M-DoT.

Enhancing Argument Structure Extraction with Efficient Leverage of Contextual Information

Argument structure extraction (ASE) aims to identify the discourse structure of arguments within documents. Previous research has demonstrated that contextual information is crucial for developing an effective ASE model. However, we observe that merely concatenating sentences in a contextual window does not fully utilize contextual information and can sometimes lead to excessive attention on less informative sentences. To tackle this challenge, we propose an Efficient Context-aware ASE model (ECASE) that fully exploits contextual information by enhancing modeling capacity and augmenting training data. Specifically, we introduce a sequence-attention module and distance-weighted similarity loss to aggregate contextual information and argumentative information. Additionally, we augment the training data by randomly masking discourse markers and sentences, which reduces the model's reliance on specific words or less informative sentences. Our experiments on five datasets from various domains demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of each module in our model.

Demonstration of a monocrystalline GaAs-$β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ p-n heterojunction

In this work, we report the fabrication and characterizations of a monocrystalline GaAs/$β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ p-n heterojunction by employing semiconductor grafting technology. The heterojunction was created by lifting off and transfer printing a p-type GaAs single crystal nanomembrane to an Al$_2$O$_3$-coated n-type$β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ epitaxial substrate. The resultant heterojunction diodes exhibit remarkable performance metrics, including an ideality factor of 1.23, a high rectification ratio of 8.04E9 at +/- 4V, and a turn on voltage of 2.35 V. Furthermore, at +5 V, the diode displays a large current density of 2500 A/cm$^2$ along with a low ON resistance of 2 m$Ω\cdot$cm$^2$.

ToolLLM: Facilitating Large Language Models to Master 16000+ Real-world APIs

Despite the advancements of open-source large language models (LLMs), e.g., LLaMA, they remain significantly limited in tool-use capabilities, i.e., using external tools (APIs) to fulfill human instructions. The reason is that current instruction tuning largely focuses on basic language tasks but ignores the tool-use domain. This is in contrast to the excellent tool-use capabilities of state-of-the-art (SOTA) closed-source LLMs, e.g., ChatGPT. To bridge this gap, we introduce ToolLLM, a general tool-use framework encompassing data construction, model training, and evaluation. We first present ToolBench, an instruction-tuning dataset for tool use, which is constructed automatically using ChatGPT. Specifically, the construction can be divided into three stages: (i) API collection: we collect 16,464 real-world RESTful APIs spanning 49 categories from RapidAPI Hub; (ii) instruction generation: we prompt ChatGPT to generate diverse instructions involving these APIs, covering both single-tool and multi-tool scenarios; (iii) solution path annotation: we use ChatGPT to search for a valid solution path (chain of API calls) for each instruction. To enhance the reasoning capabilities of LLMs, we develop a novel depth-first search-based decision tree algorithm. It enables LLMs to evaluate multiple reasoning traces and expand the search space. Moreover, to evaluate the tool-use capabilities of LLMs, we develop an automatic evaluator: ToolEval. Based on ToolBench, we fine-tune LLaMA to obtain an LLM ToolLLaMA, and equip it with a neural API retriever to recommend appropriate APIs for each instruction. Experiments show that ToolLLaMA demonstrates a remarkable ability to execute complex instructions and generalize to unseen APIs, and exhibits comparable performance to ChatGPT. Our ToolLLaMA also demonstrates strong zero-shot generalization ability in an out-of-distribution tool-use dataset: APIBench.

Skip-Plan: Procedure Planning in Instructional Videos via Condensed Action Space Learning

In this paper, we propose Skip-Plan, a condensed action space learning method for procedure planning in instructional videos. Current procedure planning methods all stick to the state-action pair prediction at every timestep and generate actions adjacently. Although it coincides with human intuition, such a methodology consistently struggles with high-dimensional state supervision and error accumulation on action sequences. In this work, we abstract the procedure planning problem as a mathematical chain model. By skipping uncertain nodes and edges in action chains, we transfer long and complex sequence functions into short but reliable ones in two ways. First, we skip all the intermediate state supervision and only focus on action predictions. Second, we decompose relatively long chains into multiple short sub-chains by skipping unreliable intermediate actions. By this means, our model explores all sorts of reliable sub-relations within an action sequence in the condensed action space. Extensive experiments show Skip-Plan achieves state-of-the-art performance on the CrossTask and COIN benchmarks for procedure planning.

TCOVIS: Temporally Consistent Online Video Instance Segmentation

In recent years, significant progress has been made in video instance segmentation (VIS), with many offline and online methods achieving state-of-the-art performance. While offline methods have the advantage of producing temporally consistent predictions, they are not suitable for real-time scenarios. Conversely, online methods are more practical, but maintaining temporal consistency remains a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel online method for video instance segmentation, called TCOVIS, which fully exploits the temporal information in a video clip. The core of our method consists of a global instance assignment strategy and a spatio-temporal enhancement module, which improve the temporal consistency of the features from two aspects. Specifically, we perform global optimal matching between the predictions and ground truth across the whole video clip, and supervise the model with the global optimal objective. We also capture the spatial feature and aggregate it with the semantic feature between frames, thus realizing the spatio-temporal enhancement. We evaluate our method on four widely adopted VIS benchmarks, namely YouTube-VIS 2019/2021/2022 and OVIS, and achieve state-of-the-art performance on all benchmarks without bells-and-whistles. For instance, on YouTube-VIS 2021, TCOVIS achieves 49.5 AP and 61.3 AP with ResNet-50 and Swin-L backbones, respectively. Code is available at https://github.com/jun-long-li/TCOVIS.

GA-Sketching: Shape Modeling from Multi-View Sketching with Geometry-Aligned Deep Implicit Functions

Sketch-based shape modeling aims to bridge the gap between 2D drawing and 3D modeling by providing an intuitive and accessible approach to create 3D shapes from 2D sketches. However, existing methods still suffer from limitations in reconstruction quality and multi-view interaction friendliness, hindering their practical application. This paper proposes a faithful and user-friendly iterative solution to tackle these limitations by learning geometry-aligned deep implicit functions from one or multiple sketches. Our method lifts 2D sketches to volume-based feature tensors, which align strongly with the output 3D shape, enabling accurate reconstruction and faithful editing. Such a geometry-aligned feature encoding technique is well-suited to iterative modeling since features from different viewpoints can be easily memorized or aggregated. Based on these advantages, we design a unified interactive system for sketch-based shape modeling. It enables users to generate the desired geometry iteratively by drawing sketches from any number of viewpoints. In addition, it allows users to edit the generated surface by making a few local modifications. We demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of our method with extensive experiments and user studies, where we found that our method outperformed existing methods in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and user satisfaction. Introspective Deep Metric Learning

This paper proposes an introspective deep metric learning (IDML) framework for uncertainty-aware comparisons of images. Conventional deep metric learning methods focus on learning a discriminative embedding to describe the semantic features of images, which ignore the existence of uncertainty in each image resulting from noise or semantic ambiguity. Training without awareness of these uncertainties causes the model to overfit the annotated labels during training and produce unsatisfactory judgments during inference. Motivated by this, we argue that a good similarity model should consider the semantic discrepancies with awareness of the uncertainty to better deal with ambiguous images for more robust training. To achieve this, we propose to represent an image using not only a semantic embedding but also an accompanying uncertainty embedding, which describes the semantic characteristics and ambiguity of an image, respectively. We further propose an introspective similarity metric to make similarity judgments between images considering both their semantic differences and ambiguities. The gradient analysis of the proposed metric shows that it enables the model to learn at an adaptive and slower pace to deal with the uncertainty during training. The proposed IDML framework improves the performance of deep metric learning through uncertainty modeling and attains state-of-the-art results on the widely used CUB-200-2011, Cars196, and Stanford Online Products datasets for image retrieval and clustering. We further provide an in-depth analysis of our framework to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of IDML. Code: https://github.com/wzzheng/IDML.

Towards Better Multi-modal Keyphrase Generation via Visual Entity Enhancement and Multi-granularity Image Noise Filtering

Multi-modal keyphrase generation aims to produce a set of keyphrases that represent the core points of the input text-image pair. In this regard, dominant methods mainly focus on multi-modal fusion for keyphrase generation. Nevertheless, there are still two main drawbacks: 1) only a limited number of sources, such as image captions, can be utilized to provide auxiliary information. However, they may not be sufficient for the subsequent keyphrase generation. 2) the input text and image are often not perfectly matched, and thus the image may introduce noise into the model. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal keyphrase generation model, which not only enriches the model input with external knowledge, but also effectively filters image noise. First, we introduce external visual entities of the image as the supplementary input to the model, which benefits the cross-modal semantic alignment for keyphrase generation. Second, we simultaneously calculate an image-text matching score and image region-text correlation scores to perform multi-granularity image noise filtering. Particularly, we introduce the correlation scores between image regions and ground-truth keyphrases to refine the calculation of the previously-mentioned correlation scores. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct several groups of experiments on the benchmark dataset. Experimental results and in-depth analyses show that our model achieves the state-of-the-art performance. Our code is available on https://github.com/DeepLearnXMU/MM-MKP.

Gromov-Witten Generating Series of Elliptic Curves as Configuration Space Integrals

The generating series of Gromov-Witten invariants of elliptic curves can be expressed in terms of multi-variable elliptic functions by works of Bloch-Okounkov and Okounkov-Pandharipande. In this work we give new sum-over-partitions formulas for these generating series and show that they are configuration space integrals of cohomology classes constructed from sections of Poincare bundles. We also discuss their quasi-elliptic and quasi-modular properties.

Take-A-Photo: 3D-to-2D Generative Pre-training of Point Cloud Models

With the overwhelming trend of mask image modeling led by MAE, generative pre-training has shown a remarkable potential to boost the performance of fundamental models in 2D vision. However, in 3D vision, the over-reliance on Transformer-based backbones and the unordered nature of point clouds have restricted the further development of generative pre-training. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D-to-2D generative pre-training method that is adaptable to any point cloud model. We propose to generate view images from different instructed poses via the cross-attention mechanism as the pre-training scheme. Generating view images has more precise supervision than its point cloud counterpart, thus assisting 3D backbones to have a finer comprehension of the geometrical structure and stereoscopic relations of the point cloud. Experimental results have proved the superiority of our proposed 3D-to-2D generative pre-training over previous pre-training methods. Our method is also effective in boosting the performance of architecture-oriented approaches, achieving state-of-the-art performance when fine-tuning on ScanObjectNN classification and ShapeNetPart segmentation tasks. Exploring the Robustness of Human Parsers Towards Common Corruptions

Human parsing aims to segment each pixel of the human image with fine-grained semantic categories. However, current human parsers trained with clean data are easily confused by numerous image corruptions such as blur and noise. To improve the robustness of human parsers, in this paper, we construct three corruption robustness benchmarks, termed LIP-C, ATR-C, and Pascal-Person-Part-C, to assist us in evaluating the risk tolerance of human parsing models. Inspired by the data augmentation strategy, we propose a novel heterogeneous augmentation-enhanced mechanism to bolster robustness under commonly corrupted conditions. Specifically, two types of data augmentations from different views, i.e., image-aware augmentation and model-aware image-to-image transformation, are integrated in a sequential manner for adapting to unforeseen image corruptions. The image-aware augmentation can enrich the high diversity of training images with the help of common image operations. The model-aware augmentation strategy that improves the diversity of input data by considering the model's randomness. The proposed method is model-agnostic, and it can plug and play into arbitrary state-of-the-art human parsing frameworks. The experimental results show that the proposed method demonstrates good universality which can improve the robustness of the human parsing models and even the semantic segmentation models when facing various image common corruptions. Meanwhile, it can still obtain approximate performance on clean data.

Introspective Deep Metric Learning for Image Retrieval

This paper proposes an introspective deep metric learning (IDML) framework for uncertainty-aware comparisons of images. To achieve this, we propose to represent an image using not only a semantic embedding but also an accompanying uncertainty embedding, which describes the semantic characteristics and ambiguity of an image, respectively. Reconstructing high-order sequence features of dynamic functional connectivity networks based on diversified covert attention patterns for Alzheimer's disease classification

Recent studies have applied deep learning methods such as convolutional recurrent neural networks (CRNs) and Transformers to brain disease classification based on dynamic functional connectivity networks (dFCNs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), achieving better performance than traditional machine learning methods. However, in CRNs, the continuous convolution operations used to obtain high-order aggregation features may overlook the non-linear correlation between different brain regions due to the essence of convolution being the linear weighted sum of local elements. Inspired by modern neuroscience on the research of covert attention in the nervous system, we introduce the self-attention mechanism, a core module of Transformers, to model diversified covert attention patterns and apply these patterns to reconstruct high-order sequence features of dFCNs in order to learn complex dynamic changes in brain information flow. Therefore, we propose a novel CRN method based on diversified covert attention patterns, DCA-CRN, which combines the advantages of CRNs in capturing local spatio-temporal features and sequence change patterns, as well as Transformers in learning global and high-order correlation features. Experimental results on the ADNI and ADHD-200 datasets demonstrate the prediction performance and generalization ability of our proposed method.

PointOcc: Cylindrical Tri-Perspective View for Point-based 3D Semantic Occupancy Prediction

Semantic segmentation in autonomous driving has been undergoing an evolution from sparse point segmentation to dense voxel segmentation, where the objective is to predict the semantic occupancy of each voxel in the concerned 3D space. The dense nature of the prediction space has rendered existing efficient 2D-projection-based methods (e.g., bird's eye view, range view, etc.) ineffective, as they can only describe a subspace of the 3D scene. To address this, we propose a cylindrical tri-perspective view to represent point clouds effectively and comprehensively and a PointOcc model to process them efficiently. Considering the distance distribution of LiDAR point clouds, we construct the tri-perspective view in the cylindrical coordinate system for more fine-grained modeling of nearer areas. We employ spatial group pooling to maintain structural details during projection and adopt 2D backbones to efficiently process each TPV plane. Finally, we obtain the features of each point by aggregating its projected features on each of the processed TPV planes without the need for any post-processing. Extensive experiments on both 3D occupancy prediction and LiDAR segmentation benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed PointOcc achieves state-of-the-art performance with much faster speed. Specifically, despite only using LiDAR, PointOcc significantly outperforms all other methods, including multi-modal methods, with a large margin on the OpenOccupancy benchmark. Code: https://github.com/wzzheng/PointOcc.
