Correlation between unconventional superconductivity and strange metallicity revealed by operando superfluid density measurements

Strange-metal behavior has been observed in superconductors ranging from cuprates to pressurized nickelates, but its relationship to unconventional superconductivity remains elusive. Here, we perform operando superfluid density measurements on ion-gated FeSe films. We observe for the first time a synchronized evolution of superconducting condensate and the strange-metal phase with electron doping. A linear scaling between zero-temperature superfluid density and the strange-metal resistivity coefficient is further established, which nails down a direct link between the formation of superfluid in the superconducting state and the scattering of carriers in the strange-metal normal state. Remarkably, the scaling also applies for different iron-based and cuprate superconductors despite their distinct electronic structures and pairing symmetries. Such a correlation can be reproduced in a theoretical calculation on the two-dimensional Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model by considering a cooperative effect of quantum critical fluctuation and disorder. These findings indicate a fundamental principle governing superconducting condensation and strange-metal scattering in unconventional superconductors.

Efficient Camera Exposure Control for Visual Odometry via Deep Reinforcement Learning

The stability of visual odometry (VO) systems is undermined by degraded image quality, especially in environments with significant illumination changes. This study employs a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework to train agents for exposure control, aiming to enhance imaging performance in challenging conditions. A lightweight image simulator is developed to facilitate the training process, enabling the diversification of image exposure and sequence trajectory. This setup enables completely offline training, eliminating the need for direct interaction with camera hardware and the real environments. Different levels of reward functions are crafted to enhance the VO systems, equipping the DRL agents with varying intelligence. Extensive experiments have shown that our exposure control agents achieve superior efficiency-with an average inference duration of 1.58 ms per frame on a CPU-and respond more quickly than traditional feedback control schemes. By choosing an appropriate reward function, agents acquire an intelligent understanding of motion trends and anticipate future illumination changes. This predictive capability allows VO systems to deliver more stable and precise odometry results. The codes and datasets are available at https://github.com/ShuyangUni/drl_exposure_ctrl.

Real-time volumetric free-hand ultrasound imaging for large-sized organs: A study of imaging the whole spine

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging can overcome the limitations of conventional two dimensional (2D) ultrasound imaging in structural observation and measurement. However, conducting volumetric ultrasound imaging for large-sized organs still faces difficulties including long acquisition time, inevitable patient movement, and 3D feature recognition. In this study, we proposed a real-time volumetric free-hand ultrasound imaging system optimized for the above issues and applied it to the clinical diagnosis of scoliosis. This study employed an incremental imaging method coupled with algorithmic acceleration to enable real-time processing and visualization of the large amounts of data generated when scanning large-sized organs. Furthermore, to deal with the difficulty of image feature recognition, we proposed two tissue segmentation algorithms to reconstruct and visualize the spinal anatomy in 3D space by approximating the depth at which the bone structures are located and segmenting the ultrasound images at different depths. We validated the adaptability of our system by deploying it to multiple models of ultra-sound equipment and conducting experiments using different types of ultrasound probes. We also conducted experiments on 6 scoliosis patients and 10 normal volunteers to evaluate the performance of our proposed method. Ultrasound imaging of a volunteer spine from shoulder to crotch (more than 500 mm) was performed in 2 minutes, and the 3D imaging results displayed in real-time were compared with the corresponding X-ray images with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 in spinal curvature. Our proposed volumetric ultrasound imaging system might hold the potential to be clinically applied to other large-sized organs.

Self-similarity Prior Distillation for Unsupervised Remote Physiological Measurement

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) is a noninvasive technique that aims to capture subtle variations in facial pixels caused by changes in blood volume resulting from cardiac activities. Most existing unsupervised methods for rPPG tasks focus on the contrastive learning between samples while neglecting the inherent self-similar prior in physiological signals. In this paper, we propose a Self-Similarity Prior Distillation (SSPD) framework for unsupervised rPPG estimation, which capitalizes on the intrinsic self-similarity of cardiac activities. Specifically, we first introduce a physical-prior embedded augmentation technique to mitigate the effect of various types of noise. Then, we tailor a self-similarity-aware network to extract more reliable self-similar physiological features. Finally, we develop a hierarchical self-distillation paradigm to assist the network in disentangling self-similar physiological patterns from facial videos. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the unsupervised SSPD framework achieves comparable or even superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art supervised methods. Meanwhile, SSPD maintains the lowest inference time and computation cost among end-to-end models.

Resolve Domain Conflicts for Generalizable Remote Physiological Measurement

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) technology has become increasingly popular due to its non-invasive monitoring of various physiological indicators, making it widely applicable in multimedia interaction, healthcare, and emotion analysis. Existing rPPG methods utilize multiple datasets for training to enhance the generalizability of models. However, they often overlook the underlying conflict issues across different datasets, such as (1) label conflict resulting from different phase delays between physiological signal labels and face videos at the instance level, and (2) attribute conflict stemming from distribution shifts caused by head movements, illumination changes, skin types, etc. To address this, we introduce the DOmain-HArmonious framework (DOHA). Specifically, we first propose a harmonious phase strategy to eliminate uncertain phase delays and preserve the temporal variation of physiological signals. Next, we design a harmonious hyperplane optimization that reduces irrelevant attribute shifts and encourages the model's optimization towards a global solution that fits more valid scenarios. Our experiments demonstrate that DOHA significantly improves the performance of existing methods under multiple protocols. Our code is available at https://github.com/SWY666/rPPG-DOHA.

Evolution of orbital excitations from insulating to superconducting MgTi$_2$O$_4$ films

Spinel oxides are well-known functional materials but rarely show superconductivity. Recently, emergent superconductivity was discovered in MgTi$_2$O$_4$, which is attributed to the increase of electron doping and the suppression of orbital order. Here, we utilized Ti $L$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to study the orbital excitations in superconducting (SC) and insulating MgTi$_2$O$_4$ films. We find that the spectral weight of orbital excitations is enhanced and the energy of $t_{2g}$ intra-band excitation is softened in the SC film compared to the insulating one, suggesting higher electron doping and suppressed orbital order gap in the SC sample. These observations were further supported by our multiplet calculations using minimal two-site model. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence for the competition between orbital order and superconductivity in MgTi$_2$O$_4$ and shed light on searching for novel superconductors in spinel oxides.

In-situ electrical and thermal transport properties of FeySe1-xTex films with ionic liquid gating

We combine in-situ electrical transport and Seebeck coefficient measurements with the ionic liquid gating technique to investigate superconductivity and the normal state of FeySe1-xTex (FST) films. We find that the pristine FST films feature a non-Fermi liquid temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient, i.e., S/T ~ AS lnT, and AS is strongly correlated with the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). Ionic liquid gating significantly raises Tc of FST films, for which the Seebeck coefficient displays a novel scaling behavior and retains the logarithmic temperature dependence. Moreover, a quantitative relationship between the slope of T-linear resistivity (A\r{ho}) and Tc for gated films is observed, i.e., (A\r{ho})1/2 ~ Tc, consistent with previous reports on cuprates and FeSe. The scaling behaviors of AS and A\r{ho} point to a spin-fluctuation-associated transport mechanism in gated FeySe1-xTex superconductors.

Exploration of growth conditions of TaAs Weyl semimetal thin film by pulsed laser deposition

TaAs, the first experimentally discovered Weyl semimetal material, has attracted a lot of attention due to its high carrier mobility, high anisotropy, nonmagnetic and strong interaction with light. These make it an ideal candidate for the study of Weyl fermions and the applications in quantum computation, thermoelectric devices, and photodetection. For further basic physics studies and potential applications, large-size and high-quality TaAs films are urgently needed. However, it is difficult to grow As-stoichiometry TaAs films due to the volatilization of As during the growth. To solve this problem, the TaAs films were attempted to grow on different substrates using targets with different As stoichiometric ratios by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In this work, we have found that partial As ions of the GaAs substrate are likely to diffuse into the TaAs films during growth, which was preliminarily confirmed by the structural characterization, surface topography and composition analysis. As a result, the As content in the TaAs film is improved and the TaAs phase is achieved. Our work presents an effective method to fabricate the TaAs films by PLD, providing the possible use of the Weyl semimetal film for functional devices.

DACOM: Learning Delay-Aware Communication for Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Communication is supposed to improve multi-agent collaboration and overall performance in cooperative Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). However, such improvements are prevalently limited in practice since most existing communication schemes ignore communication overheads (e.g., communication delays). In this paper, we demonstrate that ignoring communication delays has detrimental effects on collaborations, especially in delay-sensitive tasks such as autonomous driving. To mitigate this impact, we design a delay-aware multi-agent communication model (DACOM) to adapt communication to delays. Specifically, DACOM introduces a component, TimeNet, that is responsible for adjusting the waiting time of an agent to receive messages from other agents such that the uncertainty associated with delay can be addressed. Our experiments reveal that DACOM has a non-negligible performance improvement over other mechanisms by making a better trade-off between the benefits of communication and the costs of waiting for messages.

Bending of chiral fractal lattice metamaterials

We describe the out-of-plane bending of chiral fractal lattices metamaterials by using a combination of theoretical models, full-scale finite elements and experimental tests representing the flexural behaviour of metamaterial beams under three-point bending. Good agreement is observed between the three sets of results. Parametric analyses show a linear log-log relation between bending modulus and aspect ratios of the unit cells, which are indicative of the fractal nature of the metamaterial. The ratio between the bending and in-plane tensile moduli of these chiral fractal metamaterials ranges between ~ 5 and ~ 34 and is linearly proportional to the square of the ratio between length and width of the ribs of the chiral unit cells at different fractal orders. These properties suggest that the class of chiral fractal lattice metamaterials offer metacompliance properties between the flexural and in-plane stretching behaviours, which can be tailored by the adoption of the fractal scales.

Phase diagrams on composition-spread Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ films

Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, an archetypical iron-based high-temperature superconductor with a simple structure but rich physical properties, has attracted lots of attention because the two end compositions, Se content $x = 0$ and 1, exhibit antiferromagnetism and nematicity, respectively, making it an ideal candidate for studying their interactions with superconductivity. However, what is clearly lacking to date is a complete phase diagram of Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ as functions of its chemical compositions since phase separation usually occurs from $x\sim 0.6$ to 0.9 in bulk crystals. Moreover, fine control of its composition is experimentally challenging because both Te and Se are volatile elements. Here we establish a complete phase diagram of Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, achieved by high-throughput film synthesis and characterization techniques. An advanced combinatorial synthesis process enables us to fabricate an epitaxial composition-spread Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ film encompassing the entire Se content $x$ from 0 to 1 on a single piece of CaF$_2$ substrate. The micro-region composition analysis and X-ray diffraction show a successful continuous tuning of chemical compositions and lattice parameters, respectively. The micro-scale pattern technique allows the mapping of electrical transport properties as a function of relative Se content with an unprecedented resolution of 0.0074. Combining with the spin patterns in literature, we build a detailed phase diagram that can unify the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. Our composition-spread Fe$_y$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ films, overcoming the challenges of phase separation and precise control of chemical compositions, provide an ideal platform for studying the relationship between superconductivity and magnetism.

A disorder-sensitive emergent vortex phase identified in high-Tc superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

Bone marrow sparing for cervical cancer radiotherapy on multimodality medical images

Cervical cancer threatens the health of women seriously. Radiotherapy is one of the main therapy methods but with high risk of acute hematologic toxicity. Delineating the bone marrow (BM) for sparing using computer tomography (CT) images to plan before radiotherapy can effectively avoid this risk. Comparing with magnetic resonance (MR) images, CT lacks the ability to express the activity of BM. Thus, in current clinical practice, medical practitioners manually delineate the BM on CT images by corresponding to MR images. However, the time?consuming delineating BM by hand cannot guarantee the accuracy due to the inconsistency of the CT-MR multimodal images. In this study, we propose a multimodal image oriented automatic registration method for pelvic BM sparing, which consists of three-dimensional bone point cloud reconstruction, a local spherical system iteration closest point registration for marking BM on CT images. Experiments on patient dataset reveal that our proposed method can enhance the multimodal image registration accuracy and efficiency for medical practitioners in sparing BM of cervical cancer radiotherapy. The method proposed in this contribution might also provide references for similar studies in other clinical application.

Emergence of superconducting dome in insulating ZrNx films via nitrogen manipulation

Reproducing the electronic phase diagram of strongly correlated high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors in materials other than Cu-, Fe-, and Ni-based compounds has been a challenging task. Only very recently, a few material systems have partially achieved this goal by band engineering. In this work, we combine film growth, charge transport, magnetometry, Terahertz Spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy to investigate superconductivity and the normal state of ZrNx, which reveals a phase diagram that bears extraordinary similarities to those of high-Tc superconductors. Remarkably, even though superconductivity of ZrNx can be characterized within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer paradigm and its normal state can be understood within the Fermi liquid framework, by tunning the N chemical concentration, we observe the evolution of a superconducting dome in the close vicinity of a strongly insulating state and a normal state resistivity mimics its counterpart of the high-Tc superconductors.

Epitaxial stabilization of an orthorhombic Mg-Ti-O superconductor

The family of titanium oxide superconductors exhibits many intriguing phenomena comparable to cuprates and iron pnictides/chalcogenides, and thus provides an ideal platform to contrastively study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. Here, we successfully deposit superconducting Mg-Ti-O films on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ substrates with three principal orientations by ablating a MgTi$_2$O$_4$ target. Particularly, it is striking to observed that a single-crystalline film of an unintended structure has been grown on the (011)-oriented substrate, with the highest zero resistance transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}0}$) of 5.0 K among them. The film has a highly reduced Mg/Ti ratio and an orthorhombic Ti$_9$O$_{10}$-like structure (denoted as Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$), demonstrated by further characterizations of chemical composition and structure. Such a structure is unstable in bulk but favorable to be epitaxially stabilized on the (011)-surface of MgAl$_2$O$_4$ due to a relatively small strain at the formed interface. An isotropic upper critical field ($B_{\mathrm{c}2}$) up to 13.7 T that breaks the Pauli limit is observed in the Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$ film, analogous to other superconducting titanium oxides. The similarity points to a common origin for the superconductivity in the family, which will provide valuable opinions for the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in transition metal compounds.

Machine Learning Applications on Neuroimaging for Diagnosis and Prognosis of Epilepsy: A Review

Machine learning is playing an increasingly important role in medical image analysis, spawning new advances in the clinical application of neuroimaging. There have been some reviews on machine learning and epilepsy before, and they mainly focused on electrophysiological signals such as electroencephalography (EEG) and stereo electroencephalography (SEEG), while neglecting the potential of neuroimaging in epilepsy research. Neuroimaging has its important advantages in confirming the range of the epileptic region, which is essential in presurgical evaluation and assessment after surgery. However, it is difficult for EEG to locate the accurate epilepsy lesion region in the brain. In this review, we emphasize the interaction between neuroimaging and machine learning in the context of epilepsy diagnosis and prognosis. We start with an overview of epilepsy and typical neuroimaging modalities used in epilepsy clinics, MRI, DWI, fMRI, and PET. Then, we elaborate two approaches in applying machine learning methods to neuroimaging data: i) the conventional machine learning approach combining manual feature engineering and classifiers, ii) the deep learning approach, such as the convolutional neural networks and autoencoders. Subsequently, the application of machine learning on epilepsy neuroimaging, such as segmentation, localization, and lateralization tasks, as well as tasks directly related to diagnosis and prognosis are looked into in detail. Finally, we discuss the current achievements, challenges, and potential future directions in this field, hoping to pave the way for computer-aided diagnosis and prognosis of epilepsy.

Roton pair density wave and unconventional strong-coupling superconductivity in a topological kagome metal

The transition-metal kagome lattice materials host frustrated, correlated, and topological quantum states of matter. Recently, a new family of vanadium-based kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with topological band structures has been discovered. These layered compounds are nonmagnetic and undergo charge density wave transitions before developing superconductivity at low temperatures. Here we report the observation of unconventional superconductivity and pair density wave (PDW) in CsV3Sb5 using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and Josephson STS. We find that CsV3Sb5 exhibits a V-shaped pairing gap Δ~0.5 meV and is a strong-coupling superconductor (2Δ/kBTc~5) that coexists with 4a0 unidirectional and 2a0X2a0 charge order. Remarkably, we discover a 3Q PDW accompanied by bidirectional 4a0/3 spatial modulations of the superconducting gap, coherence peak and gap-depth in the tunneling conductance. We term this novel quantum state a roton-PDW associated with an underlying vortex-antivortex lattice that can account for the observed conductance modulations. Probing the electronic states in the vortex halo in an applied magnetic field, in strong-field that suppresses superconductivity, and in zero-field above Tc reveals that the PDW is a primary state responsible for an emergent pseudogap and intertwined electronic order. Our findings show striking analogies and distinctions to the phenomenology of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, and provide groundwork for understanding the microscopic origin of correlated electronic states and superconductivity in vanadium-based kagome metals.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Spin Nematicity in FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey Superconductor Systems

The angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) of the ab plane is measured on the single crystals of FeSe1-xSx (x = 0, 0.07, 0.13 and 1) and FeSe1-yTey (y = 0.06, 0.61 and 1) at various temperatures under fields up to 9 T. A pronounced twofold-anisotropic carrier-scattering effect is identified by AMR, and attributed to a magnetic-field-induced spin nematicity that emerges from the tetragonal normal-state regime below a characteristic temperature Tsn. This magnetically polarized spin nematicity is found to be ubiquitous in the isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey systems, no matter whether the sample shows an electronic nematic order at Ts < Tsn, or an antiferromagnetic order at TN < Tsn, or neither order. Importantly, we find that the isoelectronic substitution with sulfur does not suppress but even enhances the characteristic Tsn of the induced spin nematicity in FeSe1-xSx samples. This contrasts sharply with their rapidly suppressed Ts, the transition temperature of the spontaneous electronic nematicity. Furthermore, we find that the superconductivity is significantly suppressed with the enhancement of the induced spin nematicity in both FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey samples.
