IFRNet: Intermediate Feature Refine Network for Efficient Frame Interpolation

Prevailing video frame interpolation algorithms, that generate the intermediate frames from consecutive inputs, typically rely on complex model architectures with heavy parameters or large delay, hindering them from diverse real-time applications. In this work, we devise an efficient encoder-decoder based network, termed IFRNet, for fast intermediate frame synthesizing. It first extracts pyramid features from given inputs, and then refines the bilateral intermediate flow fields together with a powerful intermediate feature until generating the desired output. The gradually refined intermediate feature can not only facilitate intermediate flow estimation, but also compensate for contextual details, making IFRNet do not need additional synthesis or refinement module. To fully release its potential, we further propose a novel task-oriented optical flow distillation loss to focus on learning the useful teacher knowledge towards frame synthesizing. Meanwhile, a new geometry consistency regularization term is imposed on the gradually refined intermediate features to keep better structure layout. Experiments on various benchmarks demonstrate the excellent performance and fast inference speed of proposed approaches. Code is available at https://github.com/ltkong218/IFRNet.

DSG-Net: Learning Disentangled Structure and Geometry for 3D Shape Generation

D shape generation is a fundamental operation in computer graphics. While significant progress has been made, especially with recent deep generative models, it remains a challenge to synthesize high-quality shapes with rich geometric details and complex structure, in a controllable manner. To tackle this, we introduce DSG-Net, a deep neural network that learns a disentangled structured and geometric mesh representation for 3D shapes, where two key aspects of shapes, geometry, and structure, are encoded in a synergistic manner to ensure plausibility of the generated shapes, while also being disentangled as much as possible. This supports a range of novel shape generation applications with disentangled control, such as interpolation of structure (geometry) while keeping geometry (structure) unchanged. To achieve this, we simultaneously learn structure and geometry through variational autoencoders (VAEs) in a hierarchical manner for both, with bijective mappings at each level. In this manner, we effectively encode geometry and structure in separate latent spaces, while ensuring their compatibility: the structure is used to guide the geometry and vice versa. At the leaf level, the part geometry is represented using a conditional part VAE, to encode high-quality geometric details, guided by the structure context as the condition. Our method not only supports controllable generation applications but also produces high-quality synthesized shapes, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. The code has been released at https://github.com/IGLICT/DSG-Net.

C$^2$SP-Net: Joint Compression and Classification Network for Epilepsy Seizure Prediction

Recent development in brain-machine interface technology has made seizure prediction possible. However, the communication of large volume of electrophysiological signals between sensors and processing apparatus and related computation become two major bottlenecks for seizure prediction systems due to the constrained bandwidth and limited computation resource, especially for wearable and implantable medical devices. Although compressive sensing (CS) can be adopted to compress the signals to reduce communication bandwidth requirement, it needs a complex reconstruction procedure before the signal can be used for seizure prediction. In this paper, we propose C$^2$SP-Net, to jointly solve compression, prediction, and reconstruction with a single neural network. A plug-and-play in-sensor compression matrix is constructed to reduce transmission bandwidth requirement. The compressed signal can be used for seizure prediction without additional reconstruction steps. Reconstruction of the original signal can also be carried out in high fidelity. Prediction accuracy, sensitivity, false prediction rate, and reconstruction quality of the proposed framework are evaluated under various compression ratios. The experimental results illustrate that our model outperforms the competitive state-of-the-art baselines by a large margin in prediction accuracy. In particular, our proposed method produces an average loss of 0.35 % in prediction accuracy with a compression ratio ranging from 1/2 to 1/16.

An Event-Driven Compressive Neuromorphic System for Cardiac Arrhythmia Detection

Wearable electrocardiograph (ECG) recording and processing systems have been developed to detect cardiac arrhythmia to help prevent heart attacks. Conventional wearable systems, however, suffer from high energy consumption at both circuit and system levels. To overcome the design challenges, this paper proposes an event-driven compressive ECG recording and neuromorphic processing system for cardiac arrhythmia detection. The proposed system achieves low power consumption and high arrhythmia detection accuracy via system level co-design with spike-based information representation. Event-driven level-crossing ADC (LC-ADC) is exploited in the recording system, which utilizes the sparsity of ECG signal to enable compressive recording and save ADC energy during the silent signal period. Meanwhile, the proposed spiking convolutional neural network (SCNN) based neuromorphic arrhythmia detection method is inherently compatible with the spike-based output of LC-ADC, hence realizing accurate detection and low energy consumption at system level. Simulation results show that the proposed system with 5-bit LC-ADC achieves 88.6\% reduction of sampled data points compared with Nyquist sampling in the MIT-BIH dataset, and 93.59\% arrhythmia detection accuracy with SCNN, demonstrating the compression ability of LC-ADC and the effectiveness of system level co-design with SCNN.

3-form Yang-Mills based on 2-crossed modules

In this paper, we study the higher Yang-Mills theory in the framework of higher gauge theory. It was shown that the 2-form electromagnetism can be generalized to the 2-form Yang-Mills theory with the group $U(1)$ replaced by a crossed module of Lie groups. To extend this theory to even higher structure, we develop a 3-form Yang-Mills theory with a 2-crossed module of Lie groups. First, we give an explicit construction of non-degenerate symmetric $G$-invariant forms on the 2-crossed module of Lie algebras. Then, we derive the 3-Bianchi-Identities for 3-curvatures. Finally, we create a 3-form Yang-Mills action and obtain the corresponding field equations.

Enhanced Single-shot Detector for Small Object Detection in Remote Sensing Images

Small-object detection is a challenging problem. In the last few years, the convolution neural networks methods have been achieved considerable progress. However, the current detectors struggle with effective features extraction for small-scale objects. To address this challenge, we propose image pyramid single-shot detector (IPSSD). In IPSSD, single-shot detector is adopted combined with an image pyramid network to extract semantically strong features for generating candidate regions. The proposed network can enhance the small-scale features from a feature pyramid network. We evaluated the performance of the proposed model on two public datasets and the results show the superior performance of our model compared to the other state-of-the-art object detectors.

Multichannel Synthetic Preictal EEG Signals to Enhance the Prediction of Epileptic Seizures

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder affecting 1\% of people worldwide, deep learning (DL) algorithms-based electroencephalograph (EEG) analysis provides the possibility for accurate epileptic seizure (ES) prediction, thereby benefiting patients suffering from epilepsy. To identify the preictal region that precedes the onset of seizure, a large number of annotated EEG signals are required to train DL algorithms. However, the scarcity of seizure onsets leads to significant insufficiency of data for training the DL algorithms. To overcome this data insufficiency, in this paper, we propose a preictal artificial signal synthesis algorithm based on a generative adversarial network to generate synthetic multichannel EEG preictal samples. A high-quality single-channel architecture, determined by visual and statistical evaluations, is used to train the generators of multichannel samples. The effectiveness of the synthetic samples is evaluated by comparing the ES prediction performances without and with synthetic preictal sample augmentation. The leave-one-seizure-out cross validation ES prediction accuracy and corresponding area under the receiver operating characteristic curve evaluation improve from 73.0\% and 0.676 to 78.0\% and 0.704 by 10$\times$ synthetic sample augmentation, respectively. The obtained results indicate that synthetic preictal samples are effective for enhancing ES prediction performance.

Overcharging a Reissner-Nordström Taub-NUT regular black hole

The destruction of a regular black hole event horizon might provide us the possibility to access regions inside black hole event horizon. This paper investigates the possibility of overcharging a charged Taub-NUT regular black hole via the scattering of a charged field and the absorption of a charged particle. For the charged scalar field scattering, both the near-extremal and extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle absorption, the result shows that the event horizon of the extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole still exists while the event horizon of the near-extremal one can be destroyed. However, if the charge and energy cross the event horizon in a continuous path, the near-extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole might not be overcharged.

3D Human Pose Estimation for Free-from and Moving Activities Using WiFi

This paper presents GoPose, a 3D skeleton-based human pose estimation system that uses WiFi devices at home. Our system leverages the WiFi signals reflected off the human body for 3D pose estimation. In contrast to prior systems that need specialized hardware or dedicated sensors, our system does not require a user to wear or carry any sensors and can reuse the WiFi devices that already exist in a home environment for mass adoption. To realize such a system, we leverage the 2D AoA spectrum of the signals reflected from the human body and the deep learning techniques. In particular, the 2D AoA spectrum is proposed to locate different parts of the human body as well as to enable environment-independent pose estimation. Deep learning is incorporated to model the complex relationship between the 2D AoA spectrums and the 3D skeletons of the human body for pose tracking. Our evaluation results show GoPose achieves around 4.7cm of accuracy under various scenarios including tracking unseen activities and under NLoS scenarios.

Towards Fine-grained Causal Reasoning and QA

Understanding causality is key to the success of NLP applications, especially in high-stakes domains. Causality comes in various perspectives such as enable and prevent that, despite their importance, have been largely ignored in the literature. This paper introduces a novel fine-grained causal reasoning dataset and presents a series of novel predictive tasks in NLP, such as causality detection, event causality extraction, and Causal QA. Our dataset contains human annotations of 25K cause-effect event pairs and 24K question-answering pairs within multi-sentence samples, where each can have multiple causal relationships. Through extensive experiments and analysis, we show that the complex relations in our dataset bring unique challenges to state-of-the-art methods across all three tasks and highlight potential research opportunities, especially in developing "causal-thinking" methods.

Ear Wearable (Earable) User Authentication via Acoustic Toothprint

Earables (ear wearables) is rapidly emerging as a new platform encompassing a diverse range of personal applications. The traditional authentication methods hence become less applicable and inconvenient for earables due to their limited input interface. Nevertheless, earables often feature rich around-the-head sensing capability that can be leveraged to capture new types of biometrics. In this work, we proposeToothSonic which leverages the toothprint-induced sonic effect produced by users performing teeth gestures for earable authentication. In particular, we design representative teeth gestures that can produce effective sonic waves carrying the information of the toothprint. To reliably capture the acoustic toothprint, it leverages the occlusion effect of the ear canal and the inward-facing microphone of the earables. It then extracts multi-level acoustic features to reflect the intrinsic toothprint information for authentication. The key advantages of ToothSonic are that it is suitable for earables and is resistant to various spoofing attacks as the acoustic toothprint is captured via the user's private teeth-ear channel that modulates and encrypts the sonic waves. Our experiment studies with 25 participants show that ToothSonic achieves up to 95% accuracy with only one of the users' tooth gestures.

Large Itinerant Electron Exchange Coupling in the Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi2Te4

Magnetism in topological materials creates phases exhibiting quantized transport phenomena with applications in spintronics and quantum information. The emergence of such phases relies on strong interaction between localized spins and itinerant states comprising the topological bands, and the subsequent formation of an exchange gap. However, this interaction has never been measured in any intrinsic magnetic topological material. Using a multimodal approach, this exchange interaction is measured in MnBi2Te4, the first realized intrinsic magnetic topological insulator. Interrogating nonequilibrium spin dynamics, itinerant bands are found to exhibit a strong exchange coupling to localized Mn spins. Momentum-resolved ultrafast electron scattering and magneto-optic measurements reveal that itinerant spins disorder via electron-phonon scattering at picosecond timescales. Localized Mn spins, probed by resonant X-ray scattering, disorder concurrently with itinerant spins, despite being energetically decoupled from the initial excitation. Modeling the results using atomistic simulations, the exchange coupling between localized and itinerant spins is estimated to be >100 times larger than superexchange interactions. This implies an exchange gap of >25 meV should occur in the topological surface states. By directly quantifying local-itinerant exchange coupling, this work validates the materials-by-design strategy of utilizing localized magnetic order to create and manipulate magnetic topological phases, from static to ultrafast timescales.

Direct numerical simulations of the modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for the charging dynamics of cylindrical electrolyte-filled pores

Understanding how electrolyte-filled porous electrodes respond to an applied potential is important to many electrochemical technologies. Here, we consider a model supercapacitor of two blocking cylindrical pores on either side of a cylindrical electrolyte reservoir. A stepwise potential difference $2Φ$ between the pores drives ionic fluxes in the setup, which we study through the modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, solved with finite elements. We focus our discussion on the dominant timescales with which the pores charge and how these timescales depend on three dimensionless numbers. Next to the dimensionless applied potential $Φ$, we consider the ratio $R/R_b$ of the pore's resistance $R$ to the bulk reservoir resistance $R_b$ and the ratio $r_{p}/λ$ of the pore radius $r_p$ to the Debye length $λ$. We compare our data to theoretical predictions by Aslyamov and Janssen ($Φ$), Posey and Morozumi ($R/R_b$), and Henrique, Zuk, and Gupta ($r_{p}/λ$). Through our numerical approach, we delineate the validity of these theories and the assumptions on which they were based.

Hybrid Active and Passive Sensing for SLAM in Wireless Communication Systems

Integrating sensing functions into future mobile equipment has become an important trend. Realizing different types of sensing and achieving mutual enhancement under the existing communication hardware architecture is a crucial challenge in realizing the deep integration of sensing and communication. In the 5G New Radio context, active sensing can be performed through uplink beam sweeping on the user equipment (UE) side to observe the surrounding environment. In addition, the UE can perform passive sensing through downlink channel estimation to measure the multipath component (MPC) information. This study is the first to develop a hybrid simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) mechanism that combines active and passive sensing, in which mutual enhancement between the two sensing modes is realized in communication systems. Specifically, we first establish a common feature associated with the reflective surface to bridge active and passive sensing, thus enabling information fusion. Based on the common feature, we can attain physical anchor initialization through MPC with the assistance of active sensing. Then, we extend the classic probabilistic data association SLAM mechanism to achieve UE localization and continuously refine the physical anchor and target reflections through the subsequent passive sensing. Numerical results show that the proposed hybrid active and passive sensing-based SLAM mechanism can work successfully in tricky scenarios without any prior information on the floor plan, anchors, or agents. Moreover, the proposed algorithm demonstrates significant performance gains compared with active or passive sensing only mechanisms.

Online Learning of Trellis Diagram Using Neural Network for Robust Detection and Decoding

This paper studies machine learning-assisted maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum a posteriori (MAP) receivers for a communication system with memory, which can be modelled by a trellis diagram. The prerequisite of the ML/MAP receiver is to obtain the likelihood of the received samples under different state transitions of the trellis diagram, which relies on the channel state information (CSI) and the distribution of the channel noise. We propose to learn the trellis diagram real-time using an artificial neural network (ANN) trained by a pilot sequence. This approach, termed as the online learning of trellis diagram (OLTD), requires neither the CSI nor statistics of the noise, and can be incorporated into the classic Viterbi and the BCJR algorithm. %Compared with the state-of-the-art ViterbiNet and BCJRNet algorithms in the literature, it It is shown to significantly outperform the model-based methods in non-Gaussian channels. It requires much less training overhead than the state-of-the-art methods, and hence is more feasible for real implementations. As an illustrative example, the OLTD-based BCJR is applied to a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) receiver trained only by a 256-sample pilot sequence. Moreover, the OLTD-based BCJR can accommodate for turbo equalization, while the state-of-the-art BCJRNet/ViterbiNet cannot. As an interesting by-product, we propose an enhancement to the BLE standard by introducing a bit interleaver to its physical layer; the resultant improvement of the receiver sensitivity can make it a better fit for some Internet of Things (IoT) communications.

Anchor Graph Structure Fusion Hashing for Cross-Modal Similarity Search

Cross-modal hashing still has some challenges needed to address: (1) most existing CMH methods take graphs as input to model data distribution. These methods omit to consider the correlation of graph structure among multiple modalities; (2) most existing CMH methods ignores considering the fusion affinity among multi-modalities data; (3) most existing CMH methods relax the discrete constraints to solve the optimization objective, significantly degrading the retrieval performance. To solve the above limitations, we propose a novel Anchor Graph Structure Fusion Hashing (AGSFH). AGSFH constructs the anchor graph structure fusion matrix from different anchor graphs of multiple modalities with the Hadamard product, which can fully exploit the geometric property of underlying data structure. Based on the anchor graph structure fusion matrix, AGSFH attempts to directly learn an intrinsic anchor graph, where the structure of the intrinsic anchor graph is adaptively tuned so that the number of components of the intrinsic graph is exactly equal to the number of clusters. Besides, AGSFH preserves the anchor fusion affinity into the common binary Hamming space. Furthermore, a discrete optimization framework is designed to learn the unified binary codes. Extensive experimental results on three public social datasets demonstrate the superiority of AGSFH.
