On a conjecture of Bondy and Vince

Twenty years ago Bondy and Vince conjectured that for any nonnegative integer $k$, except finitely many counterexamples, every graph with $k$ vertices of degree less than three contains two cycles whose lengths differ by one or two. The case $k\leq 2$ was proved by Bondy and Vince, which resolved an earlier conjecture of Erdős et. al.. In this paper we confirm this conjecture for all $k$.

NbSeTe -A New Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Superconductor

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) usually exhibit layered polytypic structures due to the weak interlayer coupling. 2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely studied in the pristine TMDC family due to its high superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 7.3K) and the occurrence of a charge-density wave (CDW) order below 33 K. The coexistence of CDW with superconductivity poses an intriguing open question about the relationship between Fermi surface nesting and Cooper pairing. Past studies of this issue have mostly been focused on doping 2H-NbSe2 by 3d transition metals without significantly changing its crystal structure. Here we replaced the Se by Te in 2H-NbSe2 in order to design a new 1T polytype layered TMDC NbSeTe, which adopts a trigonal structure with space group P-3m1. We successfully grew large size and high-quality single crystals of 1T-NbSeTe via the vapor transport method using I2 as the transport agent. Temperature-dependent resistivity and specific heat data revealed a bulk Tc at 1.3 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in pure 1T-NbSeTe phase. This compound enlarged the family of superconducting TMDCs and provides an opportunity to study the interplay between CDW and superconductivity in the trigonal structure.

The Unusual Suppression of Superconducting Transition Temperature in Double-Doping 2H-NbSe$_2$

2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely researched transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors, which undergoes charge-density wave (CDW) transition at TCDW about 33 K and superconducting transition at Tc of 7.3 K. To explore the relation between its superconductivity and Fermi surface nesting, we combined S substitution with Cu intercalation in 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2-ySy. Upon systematic substitution of S and intercalation of Cu ions into 2H-NbSe2, we found that when the Cu and S contents increases, the Tc decreases in CuxNbSe2-ySy. While at higher x and y values, Tc keeps a constant value near 2 K, which is not commonly observed for a layered TMD. For comparison, we found the simultaneous substitution of Nb by Cu and Se by S in CuxNb1-xSe2-ySy lowered the Tc substantially faster. We construct a superconducting phase diagrams for our double-doping compounds in contrast with the related single-ions doping systems.

Counting critical subgraphs in $k$-critical graphs

Gallai asked in 1984 if any $k$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $n$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. The answer is trivial for $k\leq 3$. Improving a result of Stiebitz, Abbott and Zhou proved in 1995 that for all $k\geq 4$, such graph contains $Ω(n^{1/(k-1)})$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. Since then no progress had been made until very recently, Hare resolved the case $k=4$ by showing that any $4$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $(8n-29)/3$ odd cycles. In this paper, we mainly focus on 4-critical graphs and develop some novel tools for counting cycles of specified parity. Our main result shows that any $4$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains $Ω(n^2)$ odd cycles, which is tight up to a constant factor by infinite many graphs. As a crucial step, we prove the same bound for 3-connected non-bipartite graphs, which may be of independent interest. Using the tools, we also give a very short proof for the case $k=4$. Moreover, we improve the longstanding lower bound of Abbott and Zhou to $Ω(n^{1/(k-2)})$ for the general case $k\geq 5$. We will also discuss some related problems on $k$-critical graphs in the final section.

A conjecture of Verstraëte on vertex-disjoint cycles

Answering a question of Häggkvist and Scott, Verstraëte proved that every sufficiently large graph with average degree at least $k^2+19k+10$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of consecutive even lengths. He further conjectured that the same holds for every graph $G$ with average degree at least $k^2+3k+2$. In this paper we prove this conjecture for $k\geq 19$ when $G$ is sufficiently large. We also show that for any $ε>0$ and large $k\geq k_ε$, average degree at least $k^2+3k-2+ε$ suffices, which is asymptotically tight for infinitely many graphs.

Quantum superhet based on microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms

The highly sensitive, phase- and frequency-resolved detection of microwave electric fields is of central importance for diverse fields ranging from astronomy, remote sensing, communication and microwave quantum technology. However, present quantum sensing of microwave electric fields primarily relies on atom-based electrometers only enabling amplitude measurement. Moreover, the best sensitivity of atom-based electrometers is limited by photon shot noise to few $μ$Vcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$: While going beyond is in principle possible by using squeezed light or Schrödinger-cat state, the former is very challenging for atomic experiments while the latter is feasible in all but very small atomic systems. Here we report a novel microwave electric field quantum sensor termed as quantum superhet, which, for the first time, enables experimental measurement of phase and frequency, and makes a sensitivity few tens of nVcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$ readily accessible for current experiments. This sensor is based on microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms and tailored optical spectrum, with very favorable scalings on sensitivity gains. We can experimentally achieve a sensitivity of $55$ nVcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$, with the minimum detectable field being three orders of magnitude smaller than existing quantum electrometers. We also measure phase and frequency, being able to reach a frequency accuracy of few tens of $μ$Hz for microwave field of just few tens of nVcm$^{-1}$. Our technique can be also applied to sense electric fields at terahertz or radio frequency. This work is a first step towards realizing the long sought-after electromagnetic-wave quantum sensors with quantum projection noise limited sensitivity, promising broad applications such as in radio telescope, terahertz communication and quantum control.

Stability results on the circumference of a graph

In this paper, we extend and refine previous Turán-type results on graphs with a given circumference. Let $W_{n,k,c}$ be the graph obtained from a clique $K_{c-k+1}$ by adding $n-(c-k+1)$ isolated vertices each joined to the same $k$ vertices of the clique, and let $f(n,k,c)=e(W_{n,k,c})$. Improving a celebrated theorem of Erdős and Gallai, Kopylov proved that for $c \max{f(n,3,c),f(n,\lfloor\frac{c}{2}\rfloor-1,c)}$, then either $G$ is a subgraph of $W_{n,2,c}$ or $W_{n,\lfloor\frac{c}{2}\rfloor,c}$, or $c$ is odd and $G$ is a subgraph of a member of two well-characterized families which we define as $\mathcal{X}_{n,c}$ and $\mathcal{Y}_{n,c}$. We prove that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $k$ and circumference $c$ such that $10\leq c \max{f(n,k+1,c),f(n,\lfloor\frac{c}{2}\rfloor-1,c)}$, then one of the following holds: (i) $G$ is a subgraph of $W_{n,k,c}$ or $W_{n,\lfloor\frac{c}{2}\rfloor,c}$, (ii) $k=2$, $c$ is odd, and $G$ is a subgraph of a member of $\mathcal{X}_{n,c}\cup \mathcal{Y}_{n,c}$, or (iii) $k\geq 3$ and $G$ is a subgraph of the union of a clique $K_{c-k+1}$ and some cliques $K_{k+1}$'s, where any two cliques share the same two vertices. This provides a unified generalization of the above result of Füredi et al. as well as a recent result of Li et al. and independently, of Füredi et al. on non-Hamiltonian graphs. Moreover, we prove a stability result on a classical theorem of Bondy on the circumference.

From Claringbullite to a new spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FCl

The search for quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials has attracted significant attention in the field of condensed matter physics in recent years, but until now only a handful of them are considered as candidates hosting QSL ground state. Owning to their geometrically frustrated structure, Kagome materials are ideal system to realize QSL. In this study, we synthesized the kagome structured material Claringbullite (Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FCl) and then performed Zn doping to form Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FCl. Comprehensive measurements reveal that doping Zn$^{2+}$ ions transforms magnetically ordered Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FCl into a non-magnetic QSL candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FCl. Therefore, the successful syntheses of Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FCl and Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FCl not only provide a new platform for the study of QSL but also a novel pathway of investigating the transition between QSL and magnetically ordered systems.

Tunable Microwave Magnetic Field Detection based on Rabi Resonance with a Single Cesium-Rubidium Hybrid Vapor Cell

We experimentally investigated Rabi resonance-based continuously frequency-tunable microwave (MW) magnetic field detection using a single hybrid vapor cell filled with cesium and rubidium atoms. The multispecies atomic systems, with their tunable abilities in transition frequencies, enabled this atomic sensing head to cover a broader detectable MW field scope compared to the use of a single metal atom. Here, we demonstrated the simultaneous observation of atomic Rabi resonance signals with 85Rb, 87Rb, and 133Cs in the same vapor cell. Using an experimentally feasible static magnetic field (DC field) below 500 Gauss, we realized a MW magnetic field strength detection with bandwidths of 4.8 GHz around 8.1 GHz. The use of these three atomic systems confined in a single vapor cell also enabled the establishment of an identical MW field with the help of DC field, allowing us to perform a perfect comparison for different applications that require the same electromagnetic environment. The results may be useful for the realization and application of many atomic detectors based on different physical principles.

On Turán exponents of bipartite graphs

A long-standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits asserts that for every rational number $r\in (1,2)$ there exists a bipartite graph $H$ such that $\ex(n,H)=Θ(n^r)$. So far this conjecture is known to be true only for rationals of form $1+1/k$ and $2-1/k$, for integers $k\geq 2$. In this paper we add a new form of rationals for which the conjecture is true; $2-2/(2k+1)$, for $k\geq 2$. This in its turn also gives an affirmative answer to a question of Pinchasi and Sharir on cube-like graphs. Recently, a version of Erdős and Simonovits's conjecture where one replaces a single graph by a family, was confirmed by Bukh and Conlon. They proposed a construction of bipartite graphs which should satisfy Erdős and Simonovits's conjecture. Our result can also be viewed as a first step towards verifying Bukh and Conlon's conjecture. We also prove the an upper bound on the Turán's number of $θ$-graphs in an asymmetric setting and employ this result to obtain yet another new rational exponent for Turán exponents; $r=7/5$.

Some sharp results on the generalized Turán numbers

For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $o(n^m)$ up to a constant factor. We prove that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+biex(n,H)\cdotΘ(n^{m-2})$, where $biex(n,H)$ is the Turán number of the decomposition family of $H$. As a special case, we extend Erdős' result, by showing that $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,H)$ for any edge-critical graph $H$. We also consider $T$ being non-clique, where even the simplest case seems to be intricate. Following from a more general result, we show that for all $s\leq t$, $T_2(n)$ maximizes the number of $K_{s,t}$ in $n$-vertex triangle-free graphs if and only if $t<s+\frac12+\sqrt{2s+\frac14}$.

Deep joint rain and haze removal from single images

Rain removal from a single image is a challenge which has been studied for a long time. In this paper, a novel convolutional neural network based on wavelet and dark channel is proposed. On one hand, we think that rain streaks correspond to high frequency component of the image. Therefore, haar wavelet transform is a good choice to separate the rain streaks and background to some extent. More specifically, the LL subband of a rain image is more inclined to express the background information, while LH, HL, HH subband tend to represent the rain streaks and the edges. On the other hand, the accumulation of rain streaks from long distance makes the rain image look like haze veil. We extract dark channel of rain image as a feature map in network. By increasing this mapping between the dark channel of input and output images, we achieve haze removal in an indirect way. All of the parameters are optimized by back-propagation. Experiments on both synthetic and real- world datasets reveal that our method outperforms other state-of- the-art methods from a qualitative and quantitative perspective.

On tight cycles in hypergraphs

A tight $k$-uniform $\ell$-cycle, denoted by $TC_\ell^k$, is a $k$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is $v_0, \cdots, v_{\ell-1}$, and the edges are all the $k$-tuples $\{v_i, v_{i+1}, \cdots, v_{i+k-1}\}$, with subscripts modulo $\ell$. Motivated by a classic result in graph theory that every $n$-vertex cycle-free graph has at most $n-1$ edges, Sós and, independently, Verstraëte asked whether for every integer $k$, a $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph without any tight $k$-uniform cycles has at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ edges. In this paper, we answer this question in negative.

MSR-net:Low-light Image Enhancement Using Deep Convolutional Network

Images captured in low-light conditions usually suffer from very low contrast, which increases the difficulty of subsequent computer vision tasks in a great extent. In this paper, a low-light image enhancement model based on convolutional neural network and Retinex theory is proposed. Firstly, we show that multi-scale Retinex is equivalent to a feedforward convolutional neural network with different Gaussian convolution kernels. Motivated by this fact, we consider a Convolutional Neural Network(MSR-net) that directly learns an end-to-end mapping between dark and bright images. Different fundamentally from existing approaches, low-light image enhancement in this paper is regarded as a machine learning problem. In this model, most of the parameters are optimized by back-propagation, while the parameters of traditional models depend on the artificial setting. Experiments on a number of challenging images reveal the advantages of our method in comparison with other state-of-the-art methods from the qualitative and quantitative perspective.

Coloring graphs with two odd cycle lengths

In this paper we determine the chromatic number of graphs with two odd cycle lengths. Let $G$ be a graph and $L(G)$ be the set of all odd cycle lengths of $G$. We prove that: (1) If $L(G)=\{3,3+2l\}$, where $l\geq 2$, then $χ(G)=\max\{3,ω(G)\}$; (2) If $L(G)=\{k,k+2l\}$, where $k\geq 5$ and $l\geq 1$, then $χ(G)=3$. These, together with the case $L(G)=\{3,5\}$ solved in \cite{W}, give a complete solution to the general problem addressed in \cite{W,CS,KRS}. Our results also improve a classical theorem of Gyárfás which asserts that $χ(G)\le 2|L(G)|+2$ for any graph $G$.

Decomposing $C_4$-free graphs under degree constraints

A celebrated theorem of Stiebitz asserts that any graph with minimum degree at least $s+t+1$ can be partitioned into two parts which induce two subgraphs with minimum degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively. This resolved a conjecture of Thomassen. In this paper, we prove that for $s,t\geq 2$, if a graph $G$ contains no cycle of length four and has minimum degree at least $s+t-1$, then $G$ can be partitioned into two parts which induce two subgraphs with minimum degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively. This improves the result of Diwan, who proved the same statement for graphs of girth at least five. Our proof also works for the case of variable functions, in which the bounds are sharp as showing by some polarity graphs. As a corollary, it follows that any graph containing no cycle of length four with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles.

Measuring magnetic field inside a microwave cavity via Rabi resonances in Cs atoms

We present a technique for measuring microwave (MW) field based on Rabi resonances induced by the interaction of atoms with a phase-modulated MW field. A theoretical model of field measurement is used to calculate Rabi frequency. Single-peak feature of the measurement model makes the technique a valuable tool for simple and fast field measurement. As an example, we use the technique to determine the MW field strength inside a Cs vapor cell in the X-band rectangular cavity for applied power in the range of -21 dBm to 20 dBm. The results show that this proposed technique is capable for detecting the field over a broad dynamical range.

Fano effect in an ultracold atom-molecule coupled system

The Fano effect or Fano resonance with a characteristically asymmetric line shape originates from quantum interference between direct and indirect transition pathways in continuum-bound coupled systems, and is a ubiquitous phenomenon in atomic, molecular, nuclear and solid-state physics. In optical nanoscale structures, the Fano effect has wide-ranging applications that include optical filtering, sensing, all-optical switching, quantum interferometry and nonlinear optics, and this opens new avenues for photonic devices. The emergent area of ultracold atomic and molecular gases presents an ideal platform for studying Fano resonances, since the physical parameters of these gases can be extensively tuned with high precision using external fields. However, an experimental demonstration of the Fano effect in hybridized atom-molecular coupled systems has remained elusive. Here, we report on observations of the Fano effect in molecular spectra obtained by photoassociation near a d-wave Feshbach resonance. This effect occurs due to quantum interference in PA transitions involving the continuum of atom-atom scattering states, the underlying Feshbach and photoassociated excited bound molecular states. We measure the variation in atom loss rate with an external magnetic field close to the Feshbach resonance in the presence of PA laser, and thereby clearly demonstrate the Fano effect. Our results further reveal that the Fano effect has significant influence on spectral shifts. Based on Fano's method, we develop a theory that explains the observed experimental results relatively well. Our theoretical formulation takes into account quantum interference between or among multiple transition pathways and between inelastic channels. Our results present a novel method for tuning the collisional interaction strength with laser light using Fano resonance.
