Upper bounds on the extremal number of the 4-cycle

We obtain some new upper bounds on the maximum number $f(n)$ of edges in $n$-vertex graphs without containing cycles of length four. This leads to an asymptotically optimal bound on $f(n)$ for a broad range of integers $n$ as well as a disproof of a conjecture of Erdős from 1970s which asserts that $f(n)=\frac12 n^{3/2}+\frac14 n+o(n)$.

On the rainbow matching conjecture for 3-uniform hypergraphs

Aharoni and Howard, and, independently, Huang, Loh, and Sudakov proposed the following rainbow version of Erdős matching conjecture: For positive integers $n,k,m$ with $n\ge km$, if each of the families $F_1,\ldots, F_m\subseteq {[n]\choose k}$ has size more than $\max\{\binom{n}{k} - \binom{n-m+1}{k}, \binom{km-1}{k}\}$, then there exist pairwise disjoint subsets $e_1,\dots, e_m$ such that $e_i\in F_i$ for all $i\in [m]$. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $n_0$ such that this rainbow version holds for $k=3$ and $n\geq n_0$. We convert this rainbow matching problem to a matching problem on a special hypergraph $H$. We then combine several existing techniques on matchings in uniform hypergraphs: find an absorbing matching $M$ in $H$; use a randomization process of Alon et al. to find an almost regular subgraph of $H-V(M)$; and find an almost perfect matching in $H-V(M)$. To complete the process, we also need to prove a new result on matchings in 3-uniform hypergraphs, which can be viewed as a stability version of a result of Łuczak and Mieczkowska and might be of independent interest.

Field-induced quantum spin disordered state in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (vertical to b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets.

$E_8$ Spectra of Quasi-one-dimensional Antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under Transverse Field

We report $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under transverse field along the [010] direction. The scaling behavior of the spin-lattice relaxation rate above the Néel temperatures unveils a 1D quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c^{1D}\approx 4.7$ T, which is masked by the 3D magnetic order. With the aid of accurate analytical analysis and numerical calculations, we show that the zone center INS spectrum at $H_c^{1D}$ is precisely described by the pattern of the 1D quantum Ising model in a magnetic field, a class of universality described in terms of the exceptional $E_8$ Lie algebra. These excitations keep to be non-diffusive over a certain field range when the system is away from the 1D QCP. Our results provide an unambiguous experimental realization of the massive $E_8$ phase in the compound, and open new experimental route for exploring the dynamics of quantum integrable systems as well as physics beyond integrability.

Topological magnon insulators in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$: towards intrinsic gap-tunability

The bosonic analogues of topological insulators have been proposed in numerous theoretical works, but their experimental realization is still very rare, especially for spin systems. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets have emerged as a new platform for topological spin excitations. Here, via a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study and theoretical analysis of the spin-wave excitations, we report the realization of topological magnon insulators in CrXTe$_3$ (X=Si, Ge) compounds. The nontrivial nature and intrinsic tunability of the gap opening at the magnon band-crossing Dirac points are confirmed, while the emergence of the corresponding in-gap topological edge states is demonstrated theoretically. The realization of topological magnon insulators with intrinsic gap-tunability in this class of remarkable 2D materials will undoubtedly lead to new and fascinating technological applications in the domain of magnonics and topological spintronics.

DeepMMSA: A Novel Multimodal Deep Learning Method for Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Survival Analysis

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The critical reason for the deaths is delayed diagnosis and poor prognosis. With the accelerated development of deep learning techniques, it has been successfully applied extensively in many real-world applications, including health sectors such as medical image interpretation and disease diagnosis. By combining more modalities that being engaged in the processing of information, multimodal learning can extract better features and improve predictive ability. The conventional methods for lung cancer survival analysis normally utilize clinical data and only provide a statistical probability. To improve the survival prediction accuracy and help prognostic decision-making in clinical practice for medical experts, we for the first time propose a multimodal deep learning method for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survival analysis, named DeepMMSA. This method leverages CT images in combination with clinical data, enabling the abundant information hold within medical images to be associate with lung cancer survival information. We validate our method on the data of 422 NSCLC patients from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA). Experimental results support our hypothesis that there is an underlying relationship between prognostic information and radiomic images. Besides, quantitative results showing that the established multimodal model can be applied to traditional method and has the potential to break bottleneck of existing methods and increase the the percentage of concordant pairs(right predicted pairs) in overall population by 4%.

Three-Party Integer Comparison and Applications

Secure integer comparison has been a popular research topic in cryptography, both for its simplicity to describe and for its applications. The aim is to enable two parties to compare their inputs without revealing the exact value of those inputs. In this paper, we highlight three-party integer comparison (TPIC), where a \emph{judge}, with no private input, wants to know the comparison result, while two \emph{competitors} hold secret integers to do privacy-preserving comparison. The judge actively obtains the result rather than passively waiting for it sent by a competitor. We give two TPIC constructions considering \emph{Mixed adversaries}, who have with different capabilities. One is secure against a semi-honest adversary with low computation and communication cost, while the other is secure against a malicious adversary. Basing on TPIC, we present multi-party comparisons through concrete applications, including a joint bidding scheme and a practical auction. Brief security proofs and analysis for the applications are presented. In comparison, our auction scheme is more efficient with lower cost, making it feasible in practice rather than a theoretical design. All the comparisons and application schemes run on top of blockchain requiring a constant number of rounds.

Two-dimensional plasmonic polarons in n-doped monolayer MoS2

We report experimental and theoretical evidence of strong electron-plasmon interaction in n-doped single-layer MoS2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal the emergence of distinctive signatures of polaronic coupling in the electron spectral function. Calculations based on many-body perturbation theory illustrate that electronic coupling to two-dimensional (2D) carrier plasmons provides an exhaustive explanation of the experimental spectral features and their energies. These results constitute compelling evidence of the formation of plasmon-induced polaronic quasiparticles, suggesting that highly-doped transition-metal dichalcogenides may provide a new platform to explore strong-coupling phenomena between electrons and plasmons in 2D.

A strengthening on odd cycles in graphs of given chromatic number

Resolving a conjecture of Bollobás and Erdős, Gyárfás proved that every graph $G$ of chromatic number $k+1\geq 3$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ distinct odd lengths. We strengthen this prominent result by showing that such $G$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ consecutive odd lengths. Along the way, combining extremal and structural tools, we prove a stronger statement that every graph of chromatic number $k+1\geq 7$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths, except that some block is $K_{k+1}$. As corollaries, this confirms a conjecture of Verstraëte and answers a question of Moore and West.

Quantum Capacitance Induced Non-Local Electrostatic Gating Effect in Graphene

Electrostatic gating lies in the heart of modern FET-based integrated circuits. Usually, the gate electrode has to be placed very close to the conduction channel, typically a few nanometers, in order to achieve efficient tunability. However, remote control of a FET device through a gate electrode placed far away is always highly desired, because it not only reduces the complexity of device fabrication, but also enables designing novel devices with new functionalities. Here, a non-local gating effect in graphene using both near-field optical nano-imaging and electrical transport measurement is reported. With assistance of absorbed water molecules, the charge density of graphene can be efficiently tuned by a local-gate placed over 30 μm away. The observed non-local gating effect is initially driven by an in-plane electric field established between graphene regions with different charge densities due to the quantum capacitance near the Dirac point in graphene. The nonlocality is further amplified and largely enhanced by absorbed water molecules through screening the in-plane electric field and expending the transition length. This research reveals novel non-local phenomenon of Dirac electrons, and paves the way for designing electronic devices with remote-control using 2D materials with small density of states.

Some exact results on $4$-cycles: stability and supersaturation

Extremal problems on the $4$-cycle $C_4$ played a heuristic important role in the development of extremal graph theory. A fundamental theorem of Füredi states that the Turán number $ex(q^2+q+1, C_4)\leq \frac12 q(q+1)^2$ holds for every $q\geq 14$, which matches with the classic construction of Erdős-R{é}nyi-Sós and Brown from finite geometry for prime powers $q$. Very recently, we obtained the first stability result on Füredi's theorem, by showing that for large even $q$, every $(q^2+q+1)$-vertex $C_4$-free graph with more than $\frac12 q(q+1)^2-0.2q$ edges must be a spanning subgraph of a unique polarity graph. Using new technical ideas in graph theory and finite geometry, we strengthen this by showing that the same conclusion remains true if the number of edges is lowered to $\frac12 q(q+1)^2-\frac12 q+o(q)$. Among other applications, this gives an immediate improvement on the upper bound of $ex(n,C_4)$ for infinitely many integers $n$. A longstanding conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits states that every $n$-vertex graph with $ex(n,C_4)+1$ edges contains at least $(1+o(1))\sqrt{n}$ 4-cycles. We proved an exact result and confirmed Erdős-Simonovits conjecture for infinitely many integers $n$. As the second main result of this paper, we further characterize all extremal graphs for which achieve the $\ell$th least number of copies of $C_4$ for any fixed positive integer $\ell$. This can be extended to more general settings and provides enhancements on the understanding of the supersaturation problem of $C_4$.

A unified proof of conjectures on cycle lengths in graphs

In this paper, we prove a tight minimum degree condition in general graphs for the existence of paths between two given endpoints, whose lengths form a long arithmetic progression with common difference one or two. This allows us to obtain a number of exact and optimal results on cycle lengths in graphs of given minimum degree, connectivity or chromatic number. More precisely, we prove the following statements by a unified approach. (1) Every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all even lengths modulo $k$; in addition, if $G$ is 2-connected and non-bipartite, then it contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. (2) For all $k\geq 3$, every $k$-connected graph contains a cycle of length zero modulo $k$. (3) Every 3-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. (4) Every graph with chromatic number at least $k+2$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. The first statement is a conjecture of Thomassen, the second is a conjecture of Dean, the third is a tight answer to a question of Bondy and Vince, and the fourth is a conjecture of Sudakov and Verstraëte. All of the above results are best possible.

Improvements on induced subgraphs of given sizes

Given integers $m$ and $f$, let $S_n(m,f)$ consist of all integers $e$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with $e$ edges contains an $m$-vertex induced subgraph with $f$ edges, and let $σ(m,f)=\limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty} |S_n(m,f)|/\binom{n}{2}$. As a natural extension of an extremal problem of Erdős, this was investigated by Erdős, Füredi, Rothschild and Sós twenty years ago. Their main result indicates that integers in $S_n(m,f)$ are rare for most pairs $(m,f)$, though they also found infinitely many pairs $(m,f)$ whose $σ(m,f)$ is a fixed positive constant. Here we aim to provide some improvements on this study. Our first result shows that $σ(m,f)\leq \frac12$ holds for all but finitely many pairs $(m,f)$ and the constant $\frac12$ cannot be improved. This answers a question of Erdős et. al. Our second result considers infinitely many pairs $(m,f)$ of special forms, whose exact values of $σ(m,f)$ were conjectured by Erdős et. al. We partially solve this conjecture (only leaving two open cases) by making progress on some constructions which are related to number theory. Our proofs are based on the research of Erdős et. al and involve different arguments in number theory. We also discuss some related problems.

Minimizing cycles in tournaments and normalized $q$-norms

Akin to the Erdős-Rademacher problem, Linial and Morgenstern made the following conjecture in tournaments: for any $d\in (0,1]$, among all $n$-vertex tournaments with $d\binom{n}{3}$ many 3-cycles, the number of 4-cycles is asymptotically minimized by a special random blow-up of a transitive tournament. Recently, Chan, Grzesik, Král' and Noel introduced spectrum analysis of adjacency matrices of tournaments in this study, and confirmed this for $d\geq 1/36$. In this paper, we investigate the analogous problem of minimizing the number of cycles of a given length. We prove that for integers $\ell\not\equiv 2\mod 4$, there exists some constant $c_\ell>0$ such that if $d\geq 1-c_\ell$, then the number of $\ell$-cycles is also asymptotically minimized by the same family of extremal examples for $4$-cycles. In doing so, we answer a question of Linial and Morgenstern about minimizing the $q$-norm of a probabilistic vector with given $p$-norm for any integers $q>p>1$. For integers $\ell\equiv 2\mod 4$, however the same phenomena do not hold for $\ell$-cycles, for which we can construct an explicit family of tournaments containing fewer $\ell$-cycles for any given number of $3$-cycles. We conclude by proposing two conjectures on the minimization problem for general cycles in tournaments.

Effective Magnetic Hamiltonian at Finite Temperatures for Rare Earth Chalcogenides

Alkali metal rare-earth chalcogenide $ARECh2$ (A=alkali or monovalent metal, RE=rare earth, Ch=O, S, Se, Te), is a large family of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidates we discovered recently. Unlike $YbMgGaO4$, most members in the family except for the oxide ones, have relatively small crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitation levels, particularly the first ones. This makes the conventional Curie-Weiss analysis at finite temperatures inapplicable and CEF excitations may play an essential role in understanding the low-energy spin physics. Here we considered an effective magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating CEF excitations and spin-spin interactions, to accurately describe thermodynamics in such a system. By taking $NaYbSe2$ as an example, we were able to analyze magnetic susceptibility, magnetization under pulsed high fields and heat capacity in a systematic and comprehensive way. The analysis allows us to produce accurate anisotropic exchange coupling energies and unambiguously determine a crossover temperature ($\sim$25 K in the case of $NaYbSe2$), below which CEF effects fade away and pure spin-spin interactions stand out. We further validated the effective picture by successfully explaining the anomalous temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectral width. The effective scenario in principle can be generalized to other rare-earth spin systems with small CEF excitations.

To BERT or Not to BERT: Comparing Task-specific and Task-agnostic Semi-Supervised Approaches for Sequence Tagging

Leveraging large amounts of unlabeled data using Transformer-like architectures, like BERT, has gained popularity in recent times owing to their effectiveness in learning general representations that can then be further fine-tuned for downstream tasks to much success. However, training these models can be costly both from an economic and environmental standpoint. In this work, we investigate how to effectively use unlabeled data: by exploring the task-specific semi-supervised approach, Cross-View Training (CVT) and comparing it with task-agnostic BERT in multiple settings that include domain and task relevant English data. CVT uses a much lighter model architecture and we show that it achieves similar performance to BERT on a set of sequence tagging tasks, with lesser financial and environmental impact.

Resource-Enhanced Neural Model for Event Argument Extraction

Event argument extraction (EAE) aims to identify the arguments of an event and classify the roles that those arguments play. Despite great efforts made in prior work, there remain many challenges: (1) Data scarcity. (2) Capturing the long-range dependency, specifically, the connection between an event trigger and a distant event argument. (3) Integrating event trigger information into candidate argument representation. For (1), we explore using unlabeled data in different ways. For (2), we propose to use a syntax-attending Transformer that can utilize dependency parses to guide the attention mechanism. For (3), we propose a trigger-aware sequence encoder with several types of trigger-dependent sequence representations. We also support argument extraction either from text annotated with gold entities or from plain text. Experiments on the English ACE2005 benchmark show that our approach achieves a new state-of-the-art.
