Graph Partitioning and Graph Neural Network based Hierarchical Graph Matching for Graph Similarity Computation

Graph similarity computation aims to predict a similarity score between one pair of graphs to facilitate downstream applications, such as finding the most similar chemical compounds similar to a query compound or Fewshot 3D Action Recognition. Recently, some graph similarity computation models based on neural networks have been proposed, which are either based on graph-level interaction or node-level comparison. However, when the number of nodes in the graph increases, it will inevitably bring about reduced representation ability or high computation cost. Motivated by this observation, we propose a graph partitioning and graph neural network-based model, called PSimGNN, to effectively resolve this issue. Specifically, each of the input graphs is partitioned into a set of subgraphs to extract the local structural features directly. Next, a novel graph neural network with an attention mechanism is designed to map each subgraph into an embedding vector. Some of these subgraph pairs are automatically selected for node-level comparison to supplement the subgraph-level embedding with fine-grained information. Finally, coarse-grained interaction information among subgraphs and fine-grained comparison information among nodes in different subgraphs are integrated to predict the final similarity score. Experimental results on graph datasets with different graph sizes demonstrate that PSimGNN outperforms state-of-the-art methods in graph similarity computation tasks using approximate Graph Edit Distance (GED) as the graph similarity metric.

AttnMove: History Enhanced Trajectory Recovery via Attentional Network

A considerable amount of mobility data has been accumulated due to the proliferation of location-based service. Nevertheless, compared with mobility data from transportation systems like the GPS module in taxis, this kind of data is commonly sparse in terms of individual trajectories in the sense that users do not access mobile services and contribute their data all the time. Consequently, the sparsity inevitably weakens the practical value of the data even it has a high user penetration rate. To solve this problem, we propose a novel attentional neural network-based model, named AttnMove, to densify individual trajectories by recovering unobserved locations at a fine-grained spatial-temporal resolution. To tackle the challenges posed by sparsity, we design various intra- and inter- trajectory attention mechanisms to better model the mobility regularity of users and fully exploit the periodical pattern from long-term history. We evaluate our model on two real-world datasets, and extensive results demonstrate the performance gain compared with the state-of-the-art methods. This also shows that, by providing high-quality mobility data, our model can benefit a variety of mobility-oriented down-stream applications.

End-to-end Optimized Video Compression with MV-Residual Prediction

We present an end-to-end trainable framework for P-frame compression in this paper. A joint motion vector (MV) and residual prediction network MV-Residual is designed to extract the ensembled features of motion representations and residual information by treating the two successive frames as inputs. The prior probability of the latent representations is modeled by a hyperprior autoencoder and trained jointly with the MV-Residual network. Specially, the spatially-displaced convolution is applied for video frame prediction, in which a motion kernel for each pixel is learned to generate predicted pixel by applying the kernel at a displaced location in the source image. Finally, novel rate allocation and post-processing strategies are used to produce the final compressed bits, considering the bits constraint of the challenge. The experimental results on validation set show that the proposed optimized framework can generate the highest MS-SSIM for P-frame compression competition.

A SVBRDF Modeling Pipeline using Pixel Clustering

We present a pipeline for modeling spatially varying BRDFs (svBRDFs) of planar materials which only requires a mobile phone for data acquisition. With a minimum of two photos under the ambient and point light source, our pipeline produces svBRDF parameters, a normal map and a tangent map for the material sample. The BRDF fitting is achieved via a pixel clustering strategy and an optimization based scheme. Our method is light-weight, easy-to-use and capable of producing high-quality BRDF textures.

Steering of high energy electron beam in laser plasma accelerators

By using Dazzler system and tilting compressor grating, we provide an effective way of using the laser group delay dispersion (GDD) to continuously steer the high energy electron beam which is accelerated by asymmetric laser-wakefield. The deviation angle of electrons is as the same as the angular chirped laser pulse from its initial optical axis, which is determined by the laser pulse-front-tilt (PFT). This unique method can be continuously used to control over the pointing direction of electron-pulses to the requisite trajectories, especially for the alignment sensitive devices such as electron-positron collider or undulator. Besides, the effect of PFT on the qualities of electron beam has been investigated.

Optical Control of transverse Motion of Ionization injected Electrons in Laser Plasma Wakefield

We demonstrate an all-optical method for controlling the transverse motion of ionization injected electron beam, by utilizing the transversely asymmetrical wakefield via adjusting the shape of the laser focal spot. When the laser spot shape is changed from the circular to the obliquely elliptic in experiment, the electron beam shape becomes from elliptic to three different shapes. The 3D-PIC simulation results agree well with experiment, and it shows the trajectories of the accelerated electrons change from undulation to helix. Such an all-optical method could be useful for convenient control of the transverse motion of an electron beam which results in synchrotron radiation with orbit angular momentum.

A Genetic Algorithm for Astroparticle Physics Studies

Precision measurements of charged cosmic rays have recently been carried out by space-born (e.g. AMS-02), or ground experiments (e.g. HESS). These measured data are important for the studies of astro-physical phenomena, including supernova remnants, cosmic ray propagation, solar physics and dark matter. Those scenarios usually contain a number of free parameters that need to be adjusted by observed data. Some techniques, such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo and MultiNest, are developed in order to solve the above problem. However, it is usually required a computing farm to apply those tools. In this paper, a genetic algorithm for finding the optimum parameters for cosmic ray injection and propagation is presented. We find that this algorithm gives us the same best fit results as the Markov Chain Monte Carlo but consuming less computing power by nearly 2 orders of magnitudes.

An Algorithm for Transmitting VR Video Based on Adaptive Modulation

Virtual reality (VR) is making waves around the world recently. However, traditional video streaming is not suitable for VR video because of the huge size and view switch requirements of VR videos. Since the view of each user is limited, it is unnecessary to send the whole 360-degree scene at high quality which can be a heavy burden for the transmission system. Assuming filed-of-view (FoV) of each user can be predicted with high probability, we can divide the video screen into partitions and send those partitions which will appear in FoV at high quality. Hence, we propose an novel strategy for VR video streaming. First, we define a quality-of-experience metric to measure the viewing experience of users and define a channel model to reflect the fluctuation of the wireless channel. Next, we formulate the optimization problem and find its feasible solution by convex optimization. In order to improve bandwidth efficiency, we also add adaptive modulation to this part. Finally, we compare our algorithm with other VR streaming algorithm in the simulation. It turns out that our algorithm outperforms other algorithms.

Learning Phase Competition for Traffic Signal Control

Increasingly available city data and advanced learning techniques have empowered people to improve the efficiency of our city functions. Among them, improving the urban transportation efficiency is one of the most prominent topics. Recent studies have proposed to use reinforcement learning (RL) for traffic signal control. Different from traditional transportation approaches which rely heavily on prior knowledge, RL can learn directly from the feedback. On the other side, without a careful model design, existing RL methods typically take a long time to converge and the learned models may not be able to adapt to new scenarios. For example, a model that is trained well for morning traffic may not work for the afternoon traffic because the traffic flow could be reversed, resulting in a very different state representation. In this paper, we propose a novel design called FRAP, which is based on the intuitive principle of phase competition in traffic signal control: when two traffic signals conflict, priority should be given to one with larger traffic movement (i.e., higher demand). Through the phase competition modeling, our model achieves invariance to symmetrical cases such as flipping and rotation in traffic flow. By conducting comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate that our model finds better solutions than existing RL methods in the complicated all-phase selection problem, converges much faster during training, and achieves superior generalizability for different road structures and traffic conditions.

DeepDPM: Dynamic Population Mapping via Deep Neural Network

Dynamic high resolution data on human population distribution is of great importance for a wide spectrum of activities and real-life applications, but is too difficult and expensive to obtain directly. Therefore, generating fine-scaled population distributions from coarse population data is of great significance. However, there are three major challenges: 1) the complexity in spatial relations between high and low resolution population; 2) the dependence of population distributions on other external information; 3) the difficulty in retrieving temporal distribution patterns. In this paper, we first propose the idea to generate dynamic population distributions in full-time series, then we design dynamic population mapping via deep neural network(DeepDPM), a model that describes both spatial and temporal patterns using coarse data and point of interest information. In DeepDPM, we utilize super-resolution convolutional neural network(SRCNN) based model to directly map coarse data into higher resolution data, and a time-embedded long short-term memory model to effectively capture the periodicity nature to smooth the finer-scaled results from the previous static SRCNN model. We perform extensive experiments on a real-life mobile dataset collected from Shanghai. Our results demonstrate that DeepDPM outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods and a suite of frequent data-mining approaches. Moreover, DeepDPM breaks through the limitation from previous works in time dimension so that dynamic predictions in all-day time slots can be obtained.

Bayesian analysis of cosmic-ray propagation parameters: secondary antiparticles from spatial-dependent diffusion models

The antiparticle energy spectra of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) have several exciting features such as the unexpected positron excess at $E\sim$10-200\,GeV and the remarkably hard antiproton flux at $E\sim$\,60--450\,GeV recently measured by the \AMS{} experiment. In this paper, we report calculations of antiparticle CR spectra arising from secondary production and their corresponding uncertainties. Using the most recent data on CR protons, helium, carbon, and nuclear ratios $^{10}$Be/$^{9}$Be and B/C, we have performed a global Bayesian analysis, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm, under a scenario of spatial-dependent CR diffusion in the Galaxy which reproduces well the observed spectral hardening in the CR hadron fluxes. While the high-energy positron excess requires the contribution of additional unknown sources, we found that the antiproton data are consistent within the estimated uncertainties, with our predictions based on secondary production.

Production of antimatter nuclei in Galactic cosmic rays

Antimatter nuclei in cosmic rays (CRs) are a promising tool for the indirect detection of dark-matter annihilation signatures. However, the search of new-physics signals in CRs relies on our knowledge of the astrophysical antimatter background which, in turns, depends critically on the several fragmentation cross-sections that regulate production and destruction of antiparticles in the interstellar medium. In this work, we have re-evaluated the astrophysical background of CR antiproton, antineutron, and antihelium nuclei in Galactic CRs using improved calculations. The production cross-sections of individual antinucleons are constrained using updated calculations that make use of recent accelerator data. The production of antideuteron and antihelium nuclei is calculated using an improved model of nuclear coalescence that accounts for the asymmetry in antineutron and antiproton production. We discuss the cross-section induced uncertainties and show that they are dominating in comparison with other uncertainties of astrophysical origin.

Bayesian analysis of spatial-dependent cosmic-ray propagation: astrophysical background of antiprotons and positrons

The AMS-02 experiment has reported a new measurement of the antiproton/proton ratio in Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). In the energy range $E\sim\,$60-450 GeV, this ratio is found to be remarkably constant. Using recent data on CR proton, helium, and carbon fluxes, 10Be/9Be and B/C ratios, we have performed a global Bayesian analysis based on a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo sampling algorithm under a "two halo model" of CR propagation. In this model, CRs are allowed to experience a different type of diffusion when they propagate in the region close of the Galactic disk. We found that the vertical extent of this region is about 900 pc above and below the disk, and the corresponding diffusion coefficient scales with energy as $D\sim\,E^{0.15}$, describing well the observations on primary CR spectra, secondary/primary ratios and anisotropy. Under this model we have carried out improved calculations of antiparticle spectra arising from secondary CR production and their corresponding uncertainties. We made use of Monte-Carlo generators and accelerator data to assess the antiproton production cross-sections and their uncertainties. While the positron excess requires the contribution of additional unknown sources, we found that the new AMS-02 antiproton data are consistent, within the estimated uncertainties, with our calculations based on secondary production.

The curious case of high-energy deuterons in Galactic cosmic rays

A new analysis of cosmic ray (CR) data collected by the SOKOL experiment in space found that the deuteron-to-helium ratio at energies between 500 and 2000 GeV/nucleon takes the value d/He ~ 1.5. As we will show, this result cannot be explained by standard models of secondary CR production in the interstellar medium and points to the existence of a high-energy source of CR deuterons. To account for the deuteron excess in CRs, we argue that the only viable solution is hadronic interaction processes of accelerated particles inside old supernova remnants (SNRs). From this mechanism, however, the B/C ratio is also expected to increase at energy above ~50 of GeV/nucleon, in conflict with new precision data just released by the AMS-02 experiment. Hence, if this phenomenon is a real physical effect, hadronic production of CR deuterons must occur in SNRs characterized by low metal abundance. In such a scenario, the sources accelerating C-N-O nuclei are not the same as those accelerating helium or protons, so that the connection between d/He ratio and B/C ratio is broken, and the latter cannot be used to place constraints on the production of light isotopes or antiparticles.

Dark Matter Search in Space: Combined Analysis of Cosmic Ray Antiproton-to-Proton Flux Ratio and Positron Flux Measured by AMS-02

Dark matter search in space has been carried out for many years. Measurements of cosmic ray photons, charged antiparticles and neutrinos are useful tools for dark matter indirect search. The antiparticle energy spectra of cosmic rays have several exciting features such as the unexpected positron excess at energy about 10 -- 500 GeV and the remarkably flattening antiproton/proton at energy about 60--450 GeV precisely measured by the AMS-02 experiment, which can not be explained simultaneously by secondary production in interstellar medium. In this work, we report a combined analysis of cosmic ray antiproton and positron spectra arising from dark matter on the top of a secondary production in a spatial-dependent propagation model. We discuss the systematics from antiproton production cross section using the two latest Monte Carlo generators, i.e. EPOS LHC and QGSJET-II-04m, respectively. We compare their results. In the case of EPOS LHC, we find that the dark matter pair annihilating into tau leptons channel with 100% branching ratio is the only possible one channel scenario to explain data. On the other hand, there is not a single possible channel in the case of QGSJET-II-04m. We also propose possible two-channel scenarios based on these two Monte Carlo generators.

Imaging of Single La Vacancies in LaMnO$_{3}$

We report an approach for three-dimensional imaging of single vacancies using high precision quantitative high-angle annular dark-field Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Vacancies are identified by both the reduction in scattered intensity created by the missing atom and the distortion of the surrounding atom positions. Vacancy positions are determined laterally to a unique lattice site in the image and in depth to within one of two lattice sites by dynamical diffraction effects. 35 single La vacancies are identified in images of a LaMnO3 thin film sample. The vacancies are randomly distributed in depth and correspond to a La vacancy concentration of 0.79%, which is consistent with the level of control of cation stoichiometry within our synthesis process (~1%) and with the equilibrium concentration of La vacancies under the film growth conditions. This work demonstrates an approach to characterizing low concentrations of vacancies with high spatial resolution.

Anomalous Galactic Cosmic Rays in the Framework of AMS-02

The cosmic ray energy spectra of protons and helium nuclei, which are the most abundant components of cosmic radiation, exhibit a remarkable hardening at energies above one hundred GeV/nucleon. Recent data from AMS-02 confirms this feature with a higher significance. This data challenges the current models of cosmic ray acceleration in Galactic sources and propagation in the Galaxy. Here, we explain the observed break in the spectra of proton and helium nuclei in light of recent advances of cosmic ray diffusion theories in turbulent astrophysical sources as a result of a transition between different cosmic ray diffusion regimes. We reconstruct the observed cosmic ray spectra using the fact that transition from normal diffusion to superdiffusion changes the efficiency of particle acceleration and causes the change in the spectral index. We find that calculated proton and helium spectra match very well with the data.
