A First Look at Deep Learning Apps on Smartphones

We are in the dawn of deep learning explosion for smartphones. To bridge the gap between research and practice, we present the first empirical study on 16,500 the most popular Android apps, demystifying how smartphone apps exploit deep learning in the wild. To this end, we build a new static tool that dissects apps and analyzes their deep learning functions. Our study answers threefold questions: what are the early adopter apps of deep learning, what do they use deep learning for, and how do their deep learning models look like. Our study has strong implications for app developers, smartphone vendors, and deep learning R\&D. On one hand, our findings paint a promising picture of deep learning for smartphones, showing the prosperity of mobile deep learning frameworks as well as the prosperity of apps building their cores atop deep learning. On the other hand, our findings urge optimizations on deep learning models deployed on smartphones, the protection of these models, and validation of research ideas on these models.

Time to Transfer: Predicting and Evaluating Machine-Human Chatting Handoff

Is chatbot able to completely replace the human agent? The short answer could be - "it depends...". For some challenging cases, e.g., dialogue's topical spectrum spreads beyond the training corpus coverage, the chatbot may malfunction and return unsatisfied utterances. This problem can be addressed by introducing the Machine-Human Chatting Handoff (MHCH), which enables human-algorithm collaboration. To detect the normal/transferable utterances, we propose a Difficulty-Assisted Matching Inference (DAMI) network, utilizing difficulty-assisted encoding to enhance the representations of utterances. Moreover, a matching inference mechanism is introduced to capture the contextual matching features. A new evaluation metric, Golden Transfer within Tolerance (GT-T), is proposed to assess the performance by considering the tolerance property of the MHCH. To provide insights into the task and validate the proposed model, we collect two new datasets. Extensive experimental results are presented and contrasted against a series of baseline models to demonstrate the efficacy of our model on MHCH.

Temporal Attribute-Appearance Learning Network for Video-based Person Re-Identification

Video-based person re-identification aims to match a specific pedestrian in surveillance videos across different time and locations. Human attributes and appearance are complementary to each other, both of them contribute to pedestrian matching. In this work, we propose a novel Temporal Attribute-Appearance Learning Network (TALNet) for video-based person re-identification. TALNet simultaneously exploits human attributes and appearance to learn comprehensive and effective pedestrian representations from videos. It explores hard visual attention and temporal-semantic context for attributes, and spatial-temporal dependencies among body parts for appearance, to boost the learning of them. Specifically, an attribute branch network is proposed with a spatial attention block and a temporal-semantic context block for learning robust attribute representation. The spatial attention block focuses the network on corresponding regions within video frames related to each attribute, the temporal-semantic context block learns both the temporal context for each attribute across video frames and the semantic context among attributes in each video frame. The appearance branch network is designed to learn effective appearance representation from both whole body and body parts with spatial-temporal dependencies among them. TALNet leverages the complementation between attribute and appearance representations, and jointly optimizes them by multi-task learning fashion. Moreover, we annotate ID-level attributes for each pedestrian in the two commonly used video datasets. Extensive experiments on these datasets, have verified the superiority of TALNet over state-of-the-art methods.

Decorrelated Clustering with Data Selection Bias

Most of existing clustering algorithms are proposed without considering the selection bias in data. In many real applications, however, one cannot guarantee the data is unbiased. Selection bias might bring the unexpected correlation between features and ignoring those unexpected correlations will hurt the performance of clustering algorithms. Therefore, how to remove those unexpected correlations induced by selection bias is extremely important yet largely unexplored for clustering. In this paper, we propose a novel Decorrelation regularized K-Means algorithm (DCKM) for clustering with data selection bias. Specifically, the decorrelation regularizer aims to learn the global sample weights which are capable of balancing the sample distribution, so as to remove unexpected correlations among features. Meanwhile, the learned weights are combined with k-means, which makes the reweighted k-means cluster on the inherent data distribution without unexpected correlation influence. Moreover, we derive the updating rules to effectively infer the parameters in DCKM. Extensive experiments results on real world datasets well demonstrate that our DCKM algorithm achieves significant performance gains, indicating the necessity of removing unexpected feature correlations induced by selection bias when clustering.

Revisiting Regex Generation for Modeling Industrial Applications by Incorporating Byte Pair Encoder

Regular expression is important for many natural language processing tasks especially when used to deal with unstructured and semi-structured data. This work focuses on automatically generating regular expressions and proposes a novel genetic algorithm to deal with this problem. Different from the methods which generate regular expressions from character level, we first utilize byte pair encoder (BPE) to extract some frequent items, which are then used to construct regular expressions. The fitness function of our genetic algorithm contains multi objectives and is solved based on evolutionary procedure including crossover and mutation operation. In the fitness function, we take the length of generated regular expression, the maximum matching characters and samples for positive training samples, and the minimum matching characters and samples for negative training samples into consideration. In addition, to accelerate the training process, we do exponential decay on the population size of the genetic algorithm. Our method together with a strong baseline is tested on 13 kinds of challenging datasets. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which outperforms the baseline on 10 kinds of data and achieves nearly 50 percent improvement on average. By doing exponential decay, the training speed is approximately 100 times faster than the methods without using exponential decay. In summary, our method possesses both effectiveness and efficiency, and can be implemented for the industry application.

Co-Saliency Spatio-Temporal Interaction Network for Person Re-Identification in Videos

Person re-identification aims at identifying a certain pedestrian across non-overlapping camera networks. Video-based re-identification approaches have gained significant attention recently, expanding image-based approaches by learning features from multiple frames. In this work, we propose a novel Co-Saliency Spatio-Temporal Interaction Network (CSTNet) for person re-identification in videos. It captures the common salient foreground regions among video frames and explores the spatial-temporal long-range context interdependency from such regions, towards learning discriminative pedestrian representation. Specifically, multiple co-saliency learning modules within CSTNet are designed to utilize the correlated information across video frames to extract the salient features from the task-relevant regions and suppress background interference. Moreover, multiple spatialtemporal interaction modules within CSTNet are proposed, which exploit the spatial and temporal long-range context interdependencies on such features and spatial-temporal information correlation, to enhance feature representation. Extensive experiments on two benchmarks have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Automated Essay Scoring based on Two-Stage Learning

Current state-of-art feature-engineered and end-to-end Automated Essay Score (AES) methods are proven to be unable to detect adversarial samples, e.g. the essays composed of permuted sentences and the prompt-irrelevant essays. Focusing on the problem, we develop a Two-Stage Learning Framework (TSLF) which integrates the advantages of both feature-engineered and end-to-end AES models. In experiments, we compare TSLF against a number of strong baselines, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our models. TSLF surpasses all the baselines on five-eighths of prompts and achieves new state-of-the-art average performance when without negative samples. After adding some adversarial essays to the original datasets, TSLF outperforms the feature-engineered and end-to-end baselines to a great extent, and shows great robustness.

Far-field three-dimensional deep-subwavelength focal spot with azimuthal polarization

This work focuses on the generation of far-field super-resolved pure-azimuthal focal field based on the fast Fourier transform. A self-designed differential filter is first pioneered to robustly reconfigure a doughnut-shaped azimuthal focal field into a bright one with a sub-wavelength lateral scale (0.392λ), which offers a 27.3% reduction ratio relative to that of tightly focused azimuthal polarization modulated by a spiral phase plate. By further uniting the versatile differential filter with spatially shifted beam approach, in addition to allowing for an extremely sharper focal spot, whose size is in turn reduced to 0.228λ and 0.286λ in the transverse as well as axial directions, the parasitic sidelobes are also lowered to an inessential level (< 20%), thereby enabling an excellent three-dimensional deep-subwavelength focal field (λ3/128). The relevant phase profiles are further exhibited to unravel the annihilation of field singularity and locally linear (i.e. azimuthal) polarization. Our scheme opens a promising route toward efficiently steer and tailor the redistribution of the focal field.

Escape, bound and capture geodesics in local static coordinates in Schwarzschild spacetime

The classical geodesics of timelike particles in Schwarzschild spacetime is analyzed according to the particle starting radius $r$, velocity $v$ and angle $α$ against the radial outward direction in the reference system of an local static observer. The region of escape, bound and capture orbits in the parameter space of $(r,~v,~α)$ are solved using the three cases of the effective potential. It is found that generally for radius smaller than $4M$ or velocity larger than $c/\sqrt{2}$ there will be no bound orbits. While for fixed radius larger than $4M$ (or velocity smaller than $c/\sqrt{2}$), as velocity (or radius) increase from zero (or $2M$), the particle is always captured until a critical value $v_{\mathrm{crit1}}$ (or $r_{\mathrm{crit1}}$) when the bound orbit start to appear around $α=π/2$ between a double-napped cone structure. As the velocity (or radius) increases to another critical value $v_{\mathrm{crit2}}$ (or $r_{\mathrm{crit2}}$) then the bound directions and escape directions in the outward cone become escape directions, leaving only the inward cone separating the capture and bound directions. The angle of this cone will increase to its asymptotic value as velocity (or radius) increases to its asymptotic value. The implication of these results in shadow of black holes formed by massive particles, in black hole accretion and in spacecraft navigation is briefly discussed.

Stability of the conical Kähler-Ricci flows on Fano manifolds

In this paper, we study the stability of the conical Kähler-Ricci flows on Fano manifolds. That is, if there exists a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ$ along the divisor, then for any $β'$ sufficiently close to $β$, the corresponding conical Kähler-Ricci flow converges to a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ'$ along the divisor. Here, we only use the condition that the Log Mabuchi energy is bounded from below. This is a weaker condition than the properness that we have adopted to study the convergence before. As corollaries, we give parabolic proofs of Donaldson's openness theorem and his existence conjecture for the conical Kähler-Einstein metrics with positive Ricci curvatures.

CA3Net: Contextual-Attentional Attribute-Appearance Network for Person Re-Identification

Person re-identification aims to identify the same pedestrian across non-overlapping camera views. Deep learning techniques have been applied for person re-identification recently, towards learning representation of pedestrian appearance. This paper presents a novel Contextual-Attentional Attribute-Appearance Network (CA3Net) for person re-identification. The CA3Net simultaneously exploits the complementarity between semantic attributes and visual appearance, the semantic context among attributes, visual attention on attributes as well as spatial dependencies among body parts, leading to discriminative and robust pedestrian representation. Specifically, an attribute network within CA3Net is designed with an Attention-LSTM module. It concentrates the network on latent image regions related to each attribute as well as exploits the semantic context among attributes by a LSTM module. An appearance network is developed to learn appearance features from the full body, horizontal and vertical body parts of pedestrians with spatial dependencies among body parts. The CA3Net jointly learns the attribute and appearance features in a multi-task learning manner, generating comprehensive representation of pedestrians. Extensive experiments on two challenging benchmarks, i.e., Market-1501 and DukeMTMC-reID datasets, have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Optospintronics in graphene via proximity coupling

The observation of micron size spin relaxation makes graphene a promising material for applications in spintronics requiring long distance spin communication. However, spin dependent scatterings at the contact/graphene interfaces affect the spin injection efficiencies and hence prevent the material from achieving its full potential. While this major issue could be eliminated by nondestructive direct optical spin injection schemes, graphenes intrinsically low spin orbit coupling strength and optical absorption place an obstacle in their realization. We overcome this challenge by creating sharp artificial interfaces between graphene and WSe2 monolayers. Application of a circularly polarized light activates the spin polarized charge carriers in the WSe2 layer due to its spin coupled valley selective absorption. These carriers diffuse into the superjacent graphene layer, transport over a 3.5 um distance, and are finally detected electrically using BN/Co contacts in a non local geometry. Polarization dependent measurements confirm the spin origin of the non local signal.

Furthermore, we prove that this flow converge to a unique cusp Kähler-Einstein metric.

Implicitly Incorporating Morphological Information into Word Embedding

In this paper, we propose three novel models to enhance word embedding by implicitly using morphological information. Experiments on word similarity and syntactic analogy show that the implicit models are superior to traditional explicit ones. Our models outperform all state-of-the-art baselines and significantly improve the performance on both tasks. Moreover, our performance on the smallest corpus is similar to the performance of CBOW on the corpus which is five times the size of ours. Parameter analysis indicates that the implicit models can supplement semantic information during the word embedding training process.

Existence and stability of circular orbits in general static and spherically symmetric spacetimes

The existence and stability of circular orbits (CO) in static and spherically symmetric (SSS) spacetime are important because of their practical and potential usefulness. In this paper, using the fixed point method, we first prove a necessary and sufficient condition on the metric function for the existence of timelike COs in SSS spacetimes. After analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the metric, we then show that asymptotic flat SSS spacetime that corresponds to a negative Newtonian potential at large $r$ will always allow the existence of CO. The stability of the CO in a general SSS spacetime is then studied using the Lyapunov exponent method. Two sufficient conditions on the (in)stability of the COs are obtained. For null geodesics, a sufficient condition on the metric function for the (in)stability of null CO is also obtained. We then illustrate one powerful application of these results by showing that an SU(2) Yang-Mills-Einstein SSS spacetime whose metric function is not known, will allow the existence of timelike COs. We also used our results to assert the existence and (in)stabilities of a number of known SSS metrics.

Twisted and conical Kähler-Ricci soliton on Fano manifolds

In this paper, we consider the twisted Kähler-Ricci soliton, and show that the existence of twisted Kähler-Ricci soliton with semi-positive twisting form is closely related to the properness of some energy functionals. We also consider the conical Kähler-Ricci soliton, and obtain some existence results. In particular, under some assumptions on the divisor and $α$-invariant, we get the properness of the modified log K-energy and the existence of conical Kähler-Ricci soliton with suitable cone angle.
