Tell Me How to Ask Again: Question Data Augmentation with Controllable Rewriting in Continuous Space

In this paper, we propose a novel data augmentation method, referred to as Controllable Rewriting based Question Data Augmentation (CRQDA), for machine reading comprehension (MRC), question generation, and question-answering natural language inference tasks. We treat the question data augmentation task as a constrained question rewriting problem to generate context-relevant, high-quality, and diverse question data samples. CRQDA utilizes a Transformer autoencoder to map the original discrete question into a continuous embedding space. It then uses a pre-trained MRC model to revise the question representation iteratively with gradient-based optimization. Finally, the revised question representations are mapped back into the discrete space, which serve as additional question data. Comprehensive experiments on SQuAD 2.0, SQuAD 1.1 question generation, and QNLI tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of CRQDA

Deep Density-aware Count Regressor

We seek to improve crowd counting as we perceive limits of currently prevalent density map estimation approach on both prediction accuracy and time efficiency. We leverage multilevel pixelation of density map as it helps improve SNR of training data and therefore, reduce prediction error. To achieve a better model, we introduce multilayer gradient fusion for training a density-aware global count regressor. More specifically, on training stage, a backbone network receives gradients from multiple branches to learn the density information, whereas those branches are to be detached to accelerate inference. By taking advantages of such method, our model improves benchmark results on public datasets and exhibits itself to be a new solution to crowd counting problems in practice.

Let's be Humorous: Knowledge Enhanced Humor Generation

The generation of humor is an under-explored and challenging problem. Previous works mainly utilize templates or replace phrases to generate humor. However, few works focus on freer forms and the background knowledge of humor. The linguistic theory of humor defines the structure of a humor sentence as set-up and punchline. In this paper, we explore how to generate a punchline given the set-up with the relevant knowledge. We propose a framework that can fuse the knowledge to end-to-end models. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to generate punchlines with knowledge enhanced model. Furthermore, we create the first humor-knowledge dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can make use of knowledge to generate fluent, funny punchlines, which outperforms several baselines.

Domain Embedded Multi-model Generative Adversarial Networks for Image-based Face Inpainting

Prior knowledge of face shape and structure plays an important role in face inpainting. However, traditional face inpainting methods mainly focus on the generated image resolution of the missing portion without consideration of the special particularities of the human face explicitly and generally produce discordant facial parts. To solve this problem, we present a domain embedded multi-model generative adversarial model for inpainting of face images with large cropped regions. We firstly represent only face regions using the latent variable as the domain knowledge and combine it with the non-face parts textures to generate high-quality face images with plausible contents. Two adversarial discriminators are finally used to judge whether the generated distribution is close to the real distribution or not. It can not only synthesize novel image structures but also explicitly utilize the embedded face domain knowledge to generate better predictions with consistency on structures and appearance. Experiments on both CelebA and CelebA-HQ face datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach achieved state-of-the-art performance and generates higher quality inpainting results than existing ones.

ArcText: A Unified Text Approach to Describing Convolutional Neural Network Architectures

The superiority of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) largely relies on their architectures that are often manually crafted with extensive human expertise. Unfortunately, such kind of domain knowledge is not necessarily owned by each of the users interested. Data mining on existing CNN can discover useful patterns and fundamental sub-comments from their architectures, providing researchers with strong prior knowledge to design proper CNN architectures when they have no expertise in CNNs. There have been various state-of-the-art data mining algorithms at hand, while there is only rare work that has been done for the mining. One of the main reasons is the gap between CNN architectures and data mining algorithms. Specifically, the current CNN architecture descriptions cannot be exactly vectorized to the input of data mining algorithms. In this paper, we propose a unified approach, named ArcText, to describing CNN architectures based on text. Particularly, four different units and an ordering method have been elaborately designed in ArcText, to uniquely describe the same architecture with sufficient information. Also, the resulted description can be exactly converted back to the corresponding CNN architecture. ArcText bridges the gap between CNN architectures and data mining researchers, and has the potentiality to be utilized to wider scenarios.

RikiNet: Reading Wikipedia Pages for Natural Question Answering

Reading long documents to answer open-domain questions remains challenging in natural language understanding. In this paper, we introduce a new model, called RikiNet, which reads Wikipedia pages for natural question answering. RikiNet contains a dynamic paragraph dual-attention reader and a multi-level cascaded answer predictor. The reader dynamically represents the document and question by utilizing a set of complementary attention mechanisms. The representations are then fed into the predictor to obtain the span of the short answer, the paragraph of the long answer, and the answer type in a cascaded manner. On the Natural Questions (NQ) dataset, a single RikiNet achieves 74.3 F1 and 57.9 F1 on long-answer and short-answer tasks. To our best knowledge, it is the first single model that outperforms the single human performance. Furthermore, an ensemble RikiNet obtains 76.1 F1 and 61.3 F1 on long-answer and short-answer tasks, achieving the best performance on the official NQ leaderboard

Learning Event-Based Motion Deblurring

Recovering sharp video sequence from a motion-blurred image is highly ill-posed due to the significant loss of motion information in the blurring process. For event-based cameras, however, fast motion can be captured as events at high time rate, raising new opportunities to exploring effective solutions. In this paper, we start from a sequential formulation of event-based motion deblurring, then show how its optimization can be unfolded with a novel end-to-end deep architecture. The proposed architecture is a convolutional recurrent neural network that integrates visual and temporal knowledge of both global and local scales in principled manner. To further improve the reconstruction, we propose a differentiable directional event filtering module to effectively extract rich boundary prior from the stream of events. We conduct extensive experiments on the synthetic GoPro dataset and a large newly introduced dataset captured by a DAVIS240C camera. The proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction quality, and generalizes better to handling real-world motion blur.

Generating Chinese Poetry from Images via Concrete and Abstract Information

In recent years, the automatic generation of classical Chinese poetry has made great progress. Besides focusing on improving the quality of the generated poetry, there is a new topic about generating poetry from an image. However, the existing methods for this topic still have the problem of topic drift and semantic inconsistency, and the image-poem pairs dataset is hard to be built when training these models. In this paper, we extract and integrate the Concrete and Abstract information from images to address those issues. We proposed an infilling-based Chinese poetry generation model which can infill the Concrete keywords into each line of poems in an explicit way, and an abstract information embedding to integrate the Abstract information into generated poems. In addition, we use non-parallel data during training and construct separate image datasets and poem datasets to train the different components in our framework. Both automatic and human evaluation results show that our approach can generate poems which have better consistency with images without losing the quality.

Revision in Continuous Space: Unsupervised Text Style Transfer without Adversarial Learning

Typical methods for unsupervised text style transfer often rely on two key ingredients: 1) seeking the explicit disentanglement of the content and the attributes, and 2) troublesome adversarial learning. In this paper, we show that neither of these components is indispensable. We propose a new framework that utilizes the gradients to revise the sentence in a continuous space during inference to achieve text style transfer. Our method consists of three key components: a variational auto-encoder (VAE), some attribute predictors (one for each attribute), and a content predictor. The VAE and the two types of predictors enable us to perform gradient-based optimization in the continuous space, which is mapped from sentences in a discrete space, to find the representation of a target sentence with the desired attributes and preserved content. Moreover, the proposed method naturally has the ability to simultaneously manipulate multiple fine-grained attributes, such as sentence length and the presence of specific words, when performing text style transfer tasks. Compared with previous adversarial learning based methods, the proposed method is more interpretable, controllable and easier to train. Extensive experimental studies on three popular text style transfer tasks show that the proposed method significantly outperforms five state-of-the-art methods.

Deep Poetry: A Chinese Classical Poetry Generation System

In this work, we demonstrate a Chinese classical poetry generation system called Deep Poetry. Existing systems for Chinese classical poetry generation are mostly template-based and very few of them can accept multi-modal input. Unlike previous systems, Deep Poetry uses neural networks that are trained on over 200 thousand poems and 3 million ancient Chinese prose. Our system can accept plain text, images or artistic conceptions as inputs to generate Chinese classical poetry. More importantly, users are allowed to participate in the process of writing poetry by our system. For the user's convenience, we deploy the system at the WeChat applet platform, users can use the system on the mobile device whenever and wherever possible. Deep Learning-Based Automatic Downbeat Tracking: A Brief Review

As an important format of multimedia, music has filled almost everyone's life. Automatic analyzing music is a significant step to satisfy people's need for music retrieval and music recommendation in an effortless way. Thereinto, downbeat tracking has been a fundamental and continuous problem in Music Information Retrieval (MIR) area. Despite significant research efforts, downbeat tracking still remains a challenge. Previous researches either focus on feature engineering (extracting certain features by signal processing, which are semi-automatic solutions); or have some limitations: they can only model music audio recordings within limited time signatures and tempo ranges. Recently, deep learning has surpassed traditional machine learning methods and has become the primary algorithm in feature learning; the combination of traditional and deep learning methods also has made better performance. In this paper, we begin with a background introduction of downbeat tracking problem. Then, we give detailed discussions of the following topics: system architecture, feature extraction, deep neural network algorithms, datasets, and evaluation strategy. In addition, we take a look at the results from the annual benchmark evaluation--Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange (MIREX)--as well as the developments in software implementations. Although much has been achieved in the area of automatic downbeat tracking, some problems still remain. We point out these problems and conclude with possible directions and challenges for future research.

TIGS: An Inference Algorithm for Text Infilling with Gradient Search

Text infilling is defined as a task for filling in the missing part of a sentence or paragraph, which is suitable for many real-world natural language generation scenarios. However, given a well-trained sequential generative model, generating missing symbols conditioned on the context is challenging for existing greedy approximate inference algorithms. In this paper, we propose an iterative inference algorithm based on gradient search, which is the first inference algorithm that can be broadly applied to any neural sequence generative models for text infilling tasks. We compare the proposed method with strong baselines on three text infilling tasks with various mask ratios and different mask strategies. The results show that our proposed method is effective and efficient for fill-in-the-blank tasks, consistently outperforming all baselines.

mu-Forcing: Training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders for Text Generation

It has been previously observed that training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders (VRAE) for text generation suffers from serious uninformative latent variables problem. The model would collapse into a plain language model that totally ignore the latent variables and can only generate repeating and dull samples. In this paper, we explore the reason behind this issue and propose an effective regularizer based approach to address it. The proposed method directly injects extra constraints on the posteriors of latent variables into the learning process of VRAE, which can flexibly and stably control the trade-off between the KL term and the reconstruction term, making the model learn dense and meaningful latent representations. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several strong baselines and can make the model learn interpretable latent variables and generate diverse meaningful sentences. Furthermore, the proposed method can perform well without using other strategies, such as KL annealing.

Ancient-Modern Chinese Translation with a Large Training Dataset

Ancient Chinese brings the wisdom and spirit culture of the Chinese nation. Automatic translation from ancient Chinese to modern Chinese helps to inherit and carry forward the quintessence of the ancients. However, the lack of large-scale parallel corpus limits the study of machine translation in Ancient-Modern Chinese. In this paper, we propose an Ancient-Modern Chinese clause alignment approach based on the characteristics of these two languages. This method combines both lexical-based information and statistical-based information, which achieves 94.2 F1-score on our manual annotation Test set. We use this method to create a new large-scale Ancient-Modern Chinese parallel corpus which contains 1.24M bilingual pairs. To our best knowledge, this is the first large high-quality Ancient-Modern Chinese dataset. Furthermore, we analyzed and compared the performance of the SMT and various NMT models on this dataset and provided a strong baseline for this task.

BFGAN: Backward and Forward Generative Adversarial Networks for Lexically Constrained Sentence Generation

Incorporating prior knowledge like lexical constraints into the model's output to generate meaningful and coherent sentences has many applications in dialogue system, machine translation, image captioning, etc. However, existing RNN-based models incrementally generate sentences from left to right via beam search, which makes it difficult to directly introduce lexical constraints into the generated sentences. In this paper, we propose a new algorithmic framework, dubbed BFGAN, to address this challenge. Specifically, we employ a backward generator and a forward generator to generate lexically constrained sentences together, and use a discriminator to guide the joint training of two generators by assigning them reward signals. Due to the difficulty of BFGAN training, we propose several training techniques to make the training process more stable and efficient. Our extensive experiments on two large-scale datasets with human evaluation demonstrate that BFGAN has significant improvements over previous methods.

Learning Discriminative Representation with Signed Laplacian Restricted Boltzmann Machine

We investigate the potential of a restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) for discriminative representation learning. By imposing the class information preservation constraints on the hidden layer of the RBM, we propose a Signed Laplacian Restricted Boltzmann Machine (SLRBM) for supervised discriminative representation learning. The model utilizes the label information and preserves the global data locality of data points simultaneously. Experimental results on the benchmark data set show the effectiveness of our method.

A Multi-Modal Chinese Poetry Generation Model

Recent studies in sequence-to-sequence learning demonstrate that RNN encoder-decoder structure can successfully generate Chinese poetry. However, existing methods can only generate poetry with a given first line or user's intent theme. In this paper, we proposed a three-stage multi-modal Chinese poetry generation approach. Given a picture, the first line, the title and the other lines of the poem are successively generated in three stages. According to the characteristics of Chinese poems, we propose a hierarchy-attention seq2seq model which can effectively capture character, phrase, and sentence information between contexts and improve the symmetry delivered in poems. In addition, the Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model is utilized for title generation and improve the relevance of the whole poem and the title. Compared with strong baseline, the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, using machine evaluations as well as human judgments.

Learning Inverse Mapping by Autoencoder based Generative Adversarial Nets

The inverse mapping of GANs'(Generative Adversarial Nets) generator has a great potential value.Hence, some works have been developed to construct the inverse function of generator by directly learning or adversarial learning. While the results are encouraging, the problem is highly challenging and the existing ways of training inverse models of GANs have many disadvantages, such as hard to train or poor performance.Due to these reasons, we propose a new approach based on using inverse generator ($IG$) model as encoder and pre-trained generator ($G$) as decoder of an AutoEncoder network to train the $IG$ model. In the proposed model, the difference between the input and output, which are both the generated image of pre-trained GAN's generator, of AutoEncoder is directly minimized. The optimizing method can overcome the difficulty in training and inverse model of an non one-to-one function. We also applied the inverse model of GANs' generators to image searching and translation. The experimental results prove that the proposed approach works better than the traditional approaches in image searching.
