Real-space manifestation of ferroic multipoles in altermagnetic MnF$_2$

Altermagnets are unconventional spin split magnets arising from the zero spin-orbit coupled limit. They host a magnetic multipolar order parameter yet direct real-space observation of these multipoles has remained elusive. Here we use polarized-neutron diffraction to reconstruct the three-dimensional magnetization density of the prototypical altermagnet MnF$_2$. By exploiting symmetry-selective magnetic reflections, we separate the dominant spherical Mn$^{2+}$ contribution from the much weaker anisotropic Mn magnetization and the covalent spin polarization of the fluorine ligands. The reconstructed spin density reveals a finite fluorine ion moment together with an anisotropic Mn magnetization consistent with the symmetry-allowed altermagnetic rank-5 magnetic multipole $O_{52}$(magnetic triacontadipole). These results provide direct real-space evidence of ferroic multipolar order in an altermagnet and establish polarized-neutron diffraction as a powerful probe of hidden magnetic multipoles in quantum materials.

Resolving the Magnetic Ground State and Field-Induced Transitions in Magnetic Dirac Semimetal Candidate EuMnSb$_2$

The magnetic structure of a magnetic topological semimetal EuMnSb$_2$ is investigated in fields up to 30 T using polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction, pulsed-field x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and pulsed-field magnetometry. We determine the zero-field magnetic structures of the Eu and Mn sublattices, and find that magnetic transitions induced by applied fields below 2 T correspond to changes in the magnetic order of the Eu spins alone without detectable perturbation to the order of the Mn spins. An additional magnetic transition is observed at fields close to the saturation field for the Eu spins. We present a mean-field model which describes key features of the magnetic behavior and allows us to estimate the dominant Eu--Eu and Eu--Mn exchange interactions responsible for the coupling between magnetism and electronic topology.

Higher-order Weyl nodes driven by helical magnetic order in EuAgAs

Magnetic topological semimetals provide a fertile ground for exploring how long-range magnetic order can alter electronic band structures and generate novel quasiparticles such as Weyl fermions. Here, we investigate the coupled magnetic and electronic structure of single-crystalline EuAgAs, a hexagonal pnictide whose magnetic ground state has remained elusive. Using neutron diffraction and resonant elastic X-ray scattering, we identify an unusual magnetic ordering sequence with two successive phase transitions at $T_\mathrm{N1} = 12$ K and $T_\mathrm{N2} = 8$ K. We observe two slightly different magnetic propagation vectors, one associated with $T_\mathrm{N1}$ and the other with $T_\mathrm{N2}$. Spherical neutron polarimetry reveals that the magnetic structure is a transverse helix aligned along the $c$ axis with a period that is approximately twice the $c$ lattice parameter. First-principles calculations for the helical phase predict subtle band folding effects and the emergence of effective higher-order Weyl nodes. These topological features appear near the calculated Fermi energy $E_{\mathrm{F}}$ which, however, lies above the position of $E_{\mathrm{F}}$ obtained from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy so could not be probed in this study.

Probing the real-space density of spin-entangled electrons

On the textbook example of an isolated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg dimer, we demonstrate that the magnetic form factor and the magnetic electron density distribution can be extracted from the momentum-dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensity of a magnetic excitation. We measure the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic structure factor of the singlet-to-triplet excitation in Cu(II) acetate monohydrate with INS. Using a minimal parametrization of the magnetic electron density, we deduce the real-space density of the spin-entangled electrons and the transfer of magnetic electron density between metal and ligand atoms from the experimental data. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reproduce the measured structure factor quantitatively, providing a direct validation of DFT broken-symmetry spin densities against full 3D INS data. The quantitative agreement between experiment, parametrization, and theory establishes a robust framework for determining magnetic form factors and the magnetic electron density in a broad range of magnetic materials and demonstrates INS as a probe of the envelope of spatial electronic wavefunctions.

Coupling between CaWO$_4$ phonons and Er$^{3+}$ dopants

We investigate the lattice dynamics of CaWO$_4$, a promising host crystal for erbium-based quantum memories, using inelastic neutron scattering together with density-functional perturbation theory. The measured phonon dispersion along the (100), (001), and (101) reciprocal space direction reveals phonon bands extending up to 130 meV, with a gap between 60 and 80 meV, in good agreement with our calculations. From a symmetry analysis of the phonon eigenmodes, we identify eight Raman-active modes that can couple directly to the Er$^{3+}$ crystal-field operators, including a low-energy $B_g$ mode at 9.1 meV that is expected to play a dominant role in phonon-assisted spin-lattice relaxation. These results provide a microscopic description of the phonon bath in CaWO$_4$ and establish a basis for engineering phononic environments to mitigate the loss of stored quantum states and optimize Er-doped CaWO$_4$ for quantum-memory applications.

Nuclear quadrupole interaction and zero first-order Zeeman transitions of $^{167}$Er$^{3+}$ in CaWO$_4$

We report microwave spectroscopy of $^{167}$Er$^{3+}$ doped in CaWO$_4$ which reveals the hyperfine splitting of the erbium electronic ground state ($Z_1$, $J_\mathrm{eff.}$=15/2) induced by the $I$=7/2 nuclear spin. From spectra measured below$\sim$50 mK in magnetic fields up to 200 mT, we extract spin Hamiltonian parameters including the electron $\textbf{g}$, hyperfine $\textbf{A}$, and nuclear electric quadrupolar $\textbf{Q}$ tensors. Crucially, our analysis demonstrate unambiguously, that the previously unobserved nuclear electric quadrupolar moment is essential to reproduce the experimental data. With these refined parameters, we identify zero first-order Zeeman (ZEFOZ) transitions at zero magnetic field. Extending the analysis to finite fields, we uncover that ZEFOZ points lie either along the $c$ axis or within the $a$-$b$ plane. These results establish CaWO$_4$ as a promising host for long lifetime quantum memories.

Magnetic structure of EuZn$_2$Sb$_2$ single-crystal thin-film

Magnetic topological materials are a class of compounds which can host massless electrons controlled by the magnetic order. One such compound is EuZn$_2$Sb$_2$, which has recently garnered interest due to its strong interplay between the Eu magnetism and charge carriers. However the topology of the electronic band structure, which depends on the ground state magnetic configuration of the europium sublattice, has not been determined. Based on our \textit{ab-initio} calculations, we find that an in-plane and out-of-plane \textit{A}-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order generates a topological crystalline insulator and Dirac semimetal respectively, whereas a ferromagnetic (FM) order stabilizes a Weyl semimetal. Our resonant x-ray elastic scattering measurements of single-crystal thin film EuZn$_2$Sb$_2$ reveal both a sharp magnetic peak at $\textit{\textbf{Q}}$=$(0,0,\frac{1}{2})$ and broad $\textit{\textbf{Q}}$=$(0,0,1)$ below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=12.9$\,K, which is associated with an \textit{A}-type AFM and FM order, respectively. Our measurements indicate that the FM and AFM layers are spatially separated along the crystal $c$ axis, with the former limited to the top three atomic layers. We propose that EuZn$_2$Sb$_2$ behaves as a Weyl semimetal in the surface FM layers, and as a topological crystalline insulator in the lower AFM layers.

Polarisation and Temperature Dependence of Er$^{3+}$:CaWO$_4$ -- Towards a Solid-State Rare-Earth Ion-Doped Quantum Memory

In the endeavour of developing quantum memories, Er$^{3+}$:CaWO$_4$ has emerged as a promising rare-earth ion-doped (REID) crystal platform due to its long optical coherence times and compatibility with the 1550 nm telecommunications band. This work investigates the effects of polarisation and temperature on the absorption strength, central wavelength, and linewidth of the $Z_1\to Y_1$ and $Z_1\to Y_2$ optical transitions, with light incident along the crystal $a$ and $c$ axes. It is found that the $Z_1\to Y_1$ transition at 1532.6 nm with the incident laser along the $c$-axis at cryogenic temperatures ($\sim$3 K) is particularly favourable. The transition exhibits a stable central wavelength, narrower linewidth, polarisation independence, larger absorption cross-section, and lies within the C-band -- attributes that make it highly suitable for quantum memory applications.

Evidence of rotational and tilting disorder of ReO6 octahedra in single crystals of a 5d1 double perovskite Ba2CaReO6

We present results of an experimental study on single crystals of a 5d1 double perovskite Ba2CaReO6. Magnetization measurements reveal a weak splitting between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled protocols below 12 K. At magnetic fields above 1 T the splitting is absent and the magnetic susceptibility is featureless. A detailed specific heat study in a wide temperature range and comprising different heat pulses did not reveal any indication of a thermodynamic phase transition. At low temperatures we do observe specific heat deviating from a phonon background, leading to a total electronic entropy release of ~Rln2. Resonant and non-resonant x-ray diffraction of characteristic Bragg peaks indicates a significant presence of disorder, potentially related to random tilts and rotations of rigid ReO6 octahedra.

Fermi surface and effective masses of IrO$_2$ probed by de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations

Iridium-containing conducting materials are widely investigated for their strong spin-orbit coupling and potential topological properties. Recently the commonly used electrode material iridium dioxide was found to host a large spin-Hall conductivity and was shown to support Dirac nodal lines. Here we present quantum-oscillation experiments on high-quality IrO$_2$ single crystals using the de Haas-van Alphen effect measured using torque magnetometry with a piezo-resistive microcantilever as well as density functional theory-based band-structure calculations. The angle, temperature and field dependencies of the oscillations and the calculated band dispersion provide valuable information on the properties of the charge carriers, including the Fermi-surface geometry and electronic correlations. Comparison of experimental results to calculations allows us to assigns the observed de Haas-van Alphen frequencies to the calculated Fermi surface topology. We find that the effective masses of IrO$_2$ are enhanced compared to the rest electron mass $m_e$, ranging from 1.9 to 3.0~$m_e$, whereas the scattering times indicate excellent sample quality. We discuss our results in context with recent ARPES and band-structure calculation results that found Dirac nodal lines in IrO$_2$ and compare the effective masses and other electronic properties to those of similar materials like the nodal chain metal ReO$_2$ in which Dirac electrons with very light effective masses have been observed.

Paramagnetic half-moon shaped diffuse scattering arising from 3D magnetic frustration

We use spin dynamics simulations to determine the origin of the unusual correlated diffuse scattering, characterised by half-moon shapes bridging the magnetic Bragg peaks, observed in the polarised elastic neutron scattering from manganese tungstate, MnWO\textsubscript{4}. We first fit a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with twelve nearest-neighbour exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy to the experimental ground-state magnon dispersion. We then show via spin dynamics simulations that our model Hamiltonian both reproduces the experimentally observed half-moon features and captures their persistence into the paramagnetic regime. Moreover, we identify the three-dimensional, competing antiferromagnetic interactions driving this behavior. Our work complements earlier studies of half-moon-shaped signatures in pyrochlore and triangular structures, by providing insight into their origin in a zigzag chain geometry with three-dimensional competing exchange interactions.

Persistent quantum vibronic dynamics in a $5d^1$ double perovskite oxide

Quantum entanglement between the spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in condensed matter systems can emerge due to an interplay between spin-orbit and vibronic interactions. Heavy transition metal ions decorated on a face-centered cubic lattice, for example, in $5d^1$ double perovskites, are particularly suited to support these quantum entangled states, but direct evidence has not yet been presented. In this work, we report additional peaks in the low-energy spectra of a $5d^1$ double perovskite, Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$, which cannot be explained by adopting a purely classical description of lattice vibrations. Instead, our theoretical analysis demonstrates that these spectroscopic signatures are characteristic of orbital-lattice entangled states in Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$. Crucially, both theory and experiment demonstrate that these quantum-entangled states persist to low temperatures, despite the onset of multipolar order.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime

Exotic quantum phases, arising from a complex interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, are of immense interest to a wide research community. A well-known example of such an entangled behavior is the Jahn-Teller effect, where the lifting of orbital degeneracy proceeds through lattice distortions, often accompanied by ordering of spins and metal-insulator transitions. Static distortions, including cooperative behavior, have been associated with colossal magneto-resistance, multiferroicity, high-$T_\mathrm{C}$ superconductivity and other correlated phenomena. Realizations of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, on the other hand, are scarce since the preservation of vibronic symmetries requires subtle tuning of the local environment. Here we demonstrate that a highly-symmetrical 5d$^1$ double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$, comprising of a 3D array of isolated ReO$_6$ octahedra, fulfils these requirements, resulting in a unique case of a dynamic Jahn-Teller system with strong spin-orbit coupling. Thermodynamic and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments undoubtedly show that the Jahn-Teller instability leads to a ground-state doublet, invoking a paradigm shift for this family of compounds. The restoration of vibronic degrees of freedom arises from a quantum-mechanical zero-point motion, as revealed by detailed quantum chemistry calculations. The dynamic state of ReO$_6$ octahedra persists down to the lowest temperatures, where a multipolar order sets in, allowing for investigations of the interplay between a dynamic JT effect and strongly correlated electron behavior.

Magnetic structure of EuCd$_2$Sb$_2$ single-crystal thin-film

We investigate the magnetic order in single crystalline EuCd$_2$Sb$_2$ thin films using a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a sharp magnetic peak at $q = (0, 0, \frac{1}{2})$ below $T_N = 7.2$ K, indicative of interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering. Additionally, we observe a weak diffuse magnetic signal centered at $q = (0, 0, 1)$ that persists above $T_N$, up to $T_C \sim 11$ K. Our Monte-Carlo simulations of a classical spin model approximation of the Eu magnetic sublattice demonstrate that the diffuse signal can arise from ferromagnetic coupling in the top few layers due to surface oxidation. On the other hand, the bulk of the sample exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling between layers. Finally, our fit of the model parameters to the magnetic ordering temperatures, shed light on the exchange couplings that are key in stabilizing the observed composite magnetic order.

Spectroscopic signatures and origin of a hidden order in Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$

Clarifying the underlying mechanisms that govern ordering transitions in condensed matter systems is crucial for comprehending emergent properties and phenomena. While transitions are often classified as electronically driven or lattice-driven, we present a departure from this conventional paradigm in the case of the double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$. Leveraging resonant and non-resonant elastic x-ray scattering techniques, we unveil the simultaneous ordering of structural distortions and charge quadrupoles at a critical temperature of $T_\mathrm{q}$$\sim$33 K. Using a variety of complementary first-principles-based computational techniques, we demonstrate that while electronic interactions drive the ordering at $T_\mathrm{q}$, it is ultimately the lattice that dictates the specific ground state that emerges. Our findings highlight the crucial interplay between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom, providing a unified framework to understand and predict unconventional emergent phenomena in quantum materials.

On the sign of the linear magnetoelectric coefficient in Cr$_2$O$_3$

We establish the sign of the linear magnetoelectric (ME) coefficient, $\alpha$, in chromia, Cr$_2$O$_3$. Cr$_2$O$_3$ is the prototypical linear ME material, in which an electric (magnetic) field induces a linearly proportional magnetization (polarization), and a single magnetic domain can be selected by annealing in combined magnetic (H) and electric (E) fields. Opposite antiferromagnetic domains have opposite ME responses, and which antiferromagnetic domain corresponds to which sign of response has previously been unclear. We use density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the magnetic response of a single antiferromagnetic domain of Cr$_2$O$_3$ to an applied in-plane electric field at 0 K. We find that the domain with nearest neighbor magnetic moments oriented away from (towards) each other has a negative (positive) in-plane ME coefficient, $\alpha_{\perp}$, at 0 K. We show that this sign is consistent with all other DFT calculations in the literature that specified the domain orientation, independent of the choice of DFT code or functional, the method used to apply the field, and whether the direct (magnetic field) or inverse (electric field) ME response was calculated. Next, we reanalyze our previously published spherical neutron polarimetry data to determine the antiferromagnetic domain produced by annealing in combined E and H fields oriented along the crystallographic symmetry axis at room temperature. We find that the antiferromagnetic domain with nearest-neighbor magnetic moments oriented away from (towards) each other is produced by annealing in (anti-)parallel E and H fields, corresponding to a positive (negative) axial ME coefficient, $\alpha_{\parallel}$, at room temperature. Since $\alpha_{\perp}$ at 0 K and $\alpha_{\parallel}$ at room temperature are known to be of opposite sign, our computational and experimental results are consistent.

Field-induced bound-state condensation and spin-nematic phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ revealed by neutron scattering up to 25.9 T

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) underpins exotic forms of order ranging from superconductivity to superfluid 4 He. In quantum magnetic materials, ordered phases induced by an applied magnetic field can be described as the BEC of magnon excitations. With sufficiently strong magnetic frustration, exemplified by the system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ , no clear magnon BEC is observed and the complex spectrum of multi-magnon bound states may allow a different type of condensation, but the high fields required to probe this physics have remained a barrier to detailed investigation. Here we exploit the first purpose-built high-field neutron scattering facility to measure the spin excitations of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ up to 25.9 T and use cylinder matrix-product-states (MPS) calculations to reproduce the experimental spectra with high accuracy. Multiple unconventional features point to a condensation of $S = 2$ bound states into a spin-nematic phase, including the gradients of the one-magnon branches, the presence of many novel composite two- and three-triplon excitations and the persistence of a one-magnon spin gap. This gap reflects a direct analogy with superconductivity, suggesting that the spin-nematic phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is best understood as a condensate of bosonic Cooper pairs. Our results underline the wealth of unconventional states yet to be found in frustrated quantum magnetic materials under extreme conditions.

Weyl metallic state induced by helical magnetic order

In the rapidly expanding field of topological materials there is growing interest in systems whose topological electronic band features can be induced or controlled by magnetism. Magnetic Weyl semimetals, which contain linear band crossings near the Fermi level, are of particular interest owing to their exotic charge and spin transport properties. Up to now, the majority of magnetic Weyl semimetals have been realized in ferro- or ferrimagnetically ordered compounds, but a disadvantage of these materials for practical use is their stray magnetic field which limits the minimum size of devices. Here we show that Weyl nodes can be induced by a helical spin configuration, in which the magnetization is fully compensated. Using a combination of neutron diffraction and resonant elastic x-ray scattering, we find that EuCuAs develops a planar helical structure below $T_\textrm{N}$ = 14.5 K which induces Weyl nodes along the $\Gamma$--A high symmetry line in the Brillouin zone.
