Berry curvature effects of chiral superconducting rhombohedral graphene

We study the Berry curvature effects of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles in chiral superconducting rhombohedral graphene. Using a two-band Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian to describe the superconducting quasiparticles, we calculate the momentum-space Berry curvature, orbital magnetic moment, and anomalous thermal Hall, spin Nernst, and orbital Nernst transport of chiral $p$-wave superconducting states. We investigate the impact of normal-state band warping in rhombohedral graphene, which can generate Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces for quasiparticle excitations. We find that Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces qualitatively modify the anomalous transport responses, inducing a deviation of the thermal Hall conductivity from the quantized value and strongly enhancing the spin and orbital Nernst responses.

Semiclassical theory for the orbital magnetic moment of superconducting quasiparticles

We study the orbital magnetic moment of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in superconductors with the semiclassical approach. We derive the orbital magnetic moment of a quasiparticle wavepacket by considering the energy correction of the wavepacket to the linear order of the magnetic field. The semiclassical result is further verified by a linear response calculation with a full quantum mechanical method. From the analytical expression we find that nontrivial structure in the superconducting pairing gap alone is unable to produce quasiparticle orbital magnetic moment, which is in sharp contrast to the behavior of quasiparticle Berry curvatures. We apply the formula to study a tight-binding model with chiral $d$-wave superconducting gap, and show the influence of orbital magnetic moment on the energy spectrum and local density of states. We also calculate the orbital Nernst effect driven by the interplay between the orbital magnetic moment and the Berry curvature of Bogoliubov quasiparticles.

Interaction induced moir\'e systems in twisted bilayer optical lattices

Moir\'e related physics in twisted bilayer two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted widespread interest in condensed matter physics. Simulation of moir\'e related physics in cold atom platform is expected to outperform the 2D materials thanks to its advantage of higher tunablility. Here, we demonstrate that, the cold atom platform enables a new mechanism of moir\'e lattice formation, induced by interlayer interaction with intrinsic "dynamical" character, in contrast to conventional moir\'e lattice induced by "static" ways such as single-particle interlayer tunneling. Specifically, we consider a twisted bilayer Bose-Hubbard model with vanishing interlayer tunneling, and the bilayer is solely coupled through interlayer interaction that originates from contact interaction of atoms. We find that this system hosts a plethora of novel phases unique to this dynamical lattice, including a variety of Mott insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF) phases either preserving or breaking moir\'e lattice symmetry, phases with one layer in SF and the other in MI, "interlocked" MI, and self-localized phases at commensurate twist angles, which exhibits the characteristics of Bose glass and quasi-many-body localization in the absence of (quasi)disorder or quasicrystalline lattices. Our prediction can be readily observed in current experimental setup of twisted bilayer optical lattices, opening up new avenues for exploring the rich physics of interaction induced moir\'e systems in cold atoms.

Emergent Mott-insulators at non-integer fillings and devil's staircase induced by attractive interaction in many-body polarons

We investigate the ground state properties of an ultracold atom system consisting of many-body polarons, quasiparticles formed by impurity atoms in optical lattices immersing in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We find the nearest-neighbor attractive interaction between polarons can give rise to rich physics that is peculiar to this system. In a relatively shallow optical lattice, the attractive interaction can drive the system being in a self-bound superfluid phase with its particle density distribution manifesting a self-concentrated structure. While in a relatively deep optical lattice, the attractive interaction can drive the system forming the Mott-insulator phase even though the global filling factor is not integer. Interestingly, in the Mott-insulator regime, the system can support a series of different Mott-insulators with their effective density manifesting a devil's staircase structure with respect to the strength of attractive interaction. Detailed estimation on relevant experimental parameters shows that these rich physics can be readily observed in current experimental setups.
