Image Compressive Sensing Recovery Using Adaptively Learned Sparsifying Basis via L0 Minimization

From many fewer acquired measurements than suggested by the Nyquist sampling theory, compressive sensing (CS) theory demonstrates that, a signal can be reconstructed with high probability when it exhibits sparsity in some domain. Most of the conventional CS recovery approaches, however, exploited a set of fixed bases (e.g. DCT, wavelet and gradient domain) for the entirety of a signal, which are irrespective of the non-stationarity of natural signals and cannot achieve high enough degree of sparsity, thus resulting in poor CS recovery performance. In this paper, we propose a new framework for image compressive sensing recovery using adaptively learned sparsifying basis via L0 minimization. The intrinsic sparsity of natural images is enforced substantially by sparsely representing overlapped image patches using the adaptively learned sparsifying basis in the form of L0 norm, greatly reducing blocking artifacts and confining the CS solution space. To make our proposed scheme tractable and robust, a split Bregman iteration based technique is developed to solve the non-convex L0 minimization problem efficiently. Experimental results on a wide range of natural images for CS recovery have shown that our proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvements over many current state-of-the-art schemes and exhibits good convergence property.

Structural Group Sparse Representation for Image Compressive Sensing Recovery

Compressive Sensing (CS) theory shows that a signal can be decoded from many fewer measurements than suggested by the Nyquist sampling theory, when the signal is sparse in some domain. Most of conventional CS recovery approaches, however, exploited a set of fixed bases (e.g. DCT, wavelet, contourlet and gradient domain) for the entirety of a signal, which are irrespective of the nonstationarity of natural signals and cannot achieve high enough degree of sparsity, thus resulting in poor rate-distortion performance. In this paper, we propose a new framework for image compressive sensing recovery via structural group sparse representation (SGSR) modeling, which enforces image sparsity and self-similarity simultaneously under a unified framework in an adaptive group domain, thus greatly confining the CS solution space. In addition, an efficient iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm based technique is developed to solve the above optimization problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the novel CS recovery strategy achieves significant performance improvements over the current state-of-the-art schemes and exhibits nice convergence.

Spatially Directional Predictive Coding for Block-based Compressive Sensing of Natural Images

A novel coding strategy for block-based compressive sens-ing named spatially directional predictive coding (SDPC) is proposed, which efficiently utilizes the intrinsic spatial cor-relation of natural images. At the encoder, for each block of compressive sensing (CS) measurements, the optimal pre-diction is selected from a set of prediction candidates that are generated by four designed directional predictive modes. Then, the resulting residual is processed by scalar quantiza-tion (SQ). At the decoder, the same prediction is added onto the de-quantized residuals to produce the quantized CS measurements, which is exploited for CS reconstruction. Experimental results substantiate significant improvements achieved by SDPC-plus-SQ in rate distortion performance as compared with SQ alone and DPCM-plus-SQ.

A Fast and Practical Method to Estimate Volumes of Convex Polytopes

The volume is an important attribute of a convex body. In general, it is quite difficult to calculate the exact volume. But in many cases, it suffices to have an approximate value. Volume estimation methods for convex bodies have been extensively studied in theory, however, there is still a lack of practical implementations of such methods. In this paper, we present an efficient method which is based on the Multiphase Monte-Carlo algorithm to estimate volumes of convex polytopes. It uses the coordinate directions hit-and-run method, and employs a technique of reutilizing sample points. The experiments show that our method can efficiently handle instances with dozens of dimensions with high accuracy.

Slow foliation of a slow-fast stochastic evolutionary system

This work is concerned with the dynamics of a slow-fast stochastic evolutionary system quantified with a scale parameter. An invariant foliation decomposes the state space into geometric regions of different dynamical regimes, and thus helps understand dynamics. A slow invariant foliation is established for this system. It is shown that the slow foliation converges to a critical foliation (i.e., the scale parameter is zero) in probability distribution, as the scale parameter tends to zero. The approximation of slow foliation is also constructed with error estimate in distribution. Furthermore, the geometric structure of the slow foliation is investigated: every fiber of the slow foliation parallels each other, with the slow manifold as a special fiber. In fact, when an arbitrarily chosen point of a fiber falls in the slow manifold, the fiber must be the slow manifold itself.

Investigation of GEM-Micromegas Detector on X-ray Beam of Synchrotron Radiation

To solve the discharge of the standard Bulk Micromegas and GEM detector, the GEM-Micromegas detector was developed in Institute of High Energy Physics. Taking into account the advantages of the two detectors, one GEM foil was set as a preamplifier on the mesh of Micromegas in the structure and the GEM preamplification decreased the working voltage of Micromegas to reduce the effect of the discharge significantly. In the paper, the performance of detector in X-ray beam was studied at 1W2B laboratory of Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Finally, the result of the energy resolution under various X-ray energies was given in different working gases. It indicated that the GEM-Micromegas detector had the energy response capability in all the energy range and it could work better than the standard Bulk-Micromegas.

Characterizing A Database of Sequential Behaviors with Latent Dirichlet Hidden Markov Models

This paper proposes a generative model, the latent Dirichlet hidden Markov models (LDHMM), for characterizing a database of sequential behaviors (sequences). LDHMMs posit that each sequence is generated by an underlying Markov chain process, which are controlled by the corresponding parameters (i.e., the initial state vector, transition matrix and the emission matrix). These sequence-level latent parameters for each sequence are modeled as latent Dirichlet random variables and parameterized by a set of deterministic database-level hyper-parameters. Through this way, we expect to model the sequence in two levels: the database level by deterministic hyper-parameters and the sequence-level by latent parameters. To learn the deterministic hyper-parameters and approximate posteriors of parameters in LDHMMs, we propose an iterative algorithm under the variational EM framework, which consists of E and M steps. We examine two different schemes, the fully-factorized and partially-factorized forms, for the framework, based on different assumptions. We present empirical results of behavior modeling and sequence classification on three real-world data sets, and compare them to other related models. The experimental results prove that the proposed LDHMMs produce better generalization performance in terms of log-likelihood and deliver competitive results on the sequence classification problem.

Double exchange model on triangular lattice: non-coplanar spin configuration and phase transition near quarter filling

Unconventional anomalous Hall effect in frustrated pyrochlore oxides is originated from spin chirality of non-coplanar localized spins, which can also be induced by the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) double exchange interaction $J_{H}$ and antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction $J_{AF}$. Here truncated polynomial expansion method and Monte Carlo simulation are adopted to investigate the above model on two-dimensional triangular lattice. We discuss the influence of the range of FM-type spin-spin correlation and strong electron-spin correlation on the truncation error of spin-spin correlation near quarter filling. Two peaks of the probability distribution of spin-spin correlation in non-coplanar spin configuration clearly show that non-coplanar spin configuration is an intermediate phase between FM and 120-degree spin phase. Near quarter filling, there is a phase transition from FM into non-coplanar and further into 120-degree spin phase when $J_{AF}$ continually increases. Finally the effect of temperature on magnetic structure is discussed.

Electronic and spin transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbon mediated by metal adatom: A study by QUAMBO-NEGF approach

Structural and electronic properties, including deformation, magnetic moment, Mulliken population, bond order as well as electronic transport properties, of zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) with Co adatom on hollow site are investigated by quasi-atomic minimal basis orbits (QUAMBOs), a first-principles tight binding (TB) scheme based on density functional theory (DFT), combined with non-equilibrium Green's function. As for electronic transport, below Fermi level the transmission is strongly suppressed and spin-dependent as a result of magnetism by Co adatom adsorption, while above Fermi level the transmission is slightly distorted and spin-independent. Due to local environment dependence of QUAMBOs-TB parameters, we construct QUAMBOs-TB parameters of ZGNR lead and ZGNR with Co adatom on the hollow center site by divide-and-conquer approach, and well reproduce the electronic transmission behavior. Our QUAMBO-NEGF method is a new and promising way for electronic transport in large-scale system.

Improved Total Variation based Image Compressive Sensing Recovery by Nonlocal Regularization

Recently, total variation (TV) based minimization algorithms have achieved great success in compressive sensing (CS) recovery for natural images due to its virtue of preserving edges. However, the use of TV is not able to recover the fine details and textures, and often suffers from undesirable staircase artifact. To reduce these effects, this letter presents an improved TV based image CS recovery algorithm by introducing a new nonlocal regularization constraint into CS optimization problem. The nonlocal regularization is built on the well known nonlocal means (NLM) filtering and takes advantage of self-similarity in images, which helps to suppress the staircase effect and restore the fine details. Furthermore, an efficient augmented Lagrangian based algorithm is developed to solve the above combined TV and nonlocal regularization constrained problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvements over the state-of-the-art TV based algorithm in both PSNR and visual perception.

High Quality Image Interpolation via Local Autoregressive and Nonlocal 3-D Sparse Regularization

In this paper, we propose a novel image interpolation algorithm, which is formulated via combining both the local autoregressive (AR) model and the nonlocal adaptive 3-D sparse model as regularized constraints under the regularization framework. Estimating the high-resolution image by the local AR regularization is different from these conventional AR models, which weighted calculates the interpolation coefficients without considering the rough structural similarity between the low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) images. Then the nonlocal adaptive 3-D sparse model is formulated to regularize the interpolated HR image, which provides a way to modify these pixels with the problem of numerical stability caused by AR model. In addition, a new Split-Bregman based iterative algorithm is developed to solve the above optimization problem iteratively. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvements over the traditional algorithms in terms of both objective quality and visual perception

Approximating dynamics of a singularly perturbed stochastic wave equation with a random dynamical boundary condition

This work is concerned with a singularly perturbed stochastic nonlinear wave equation with a random dynamical boundary condition. A splitting skill is used to derive the approximating equation of the system in the sense of probability distribution, when the singular perturbation parameter is sufficiently small. The approximating equation is a stochastic parabolic equation when the power exponent of singular perturbation parameter is in $[1/2, 1)$, but a deterministic hyperbolic (wave) equation when the power exponent is in $(1, +\infty)$.

Exploiting Image Local And Nonlocal Consistency For Mixed Gaussian-Impulse Noise Removal

Most existing image denoising algorithms can only deal with a single type of noise, which violates the fact that the noisy observed images in practice are often suffered from more than one type of noise during the process of acquisition and transmission. In this paper, we propose a new variational algorithm for mixed Gaussian-impulse noise removal by exploiting image local consistency and nonlocal consistency simultaneously. Specifically, the local consistency is measured by a hyper-Laplace prior, enforcing the local smoothness of images, while the nonlocal consistency is measured by three-dimensional sparsity of similar blocks, enforcing the nonlocal self-similarity of natural images. Moreover, a Split-Bregman based technique is developed to solve the above optimization problem efficiently. Extensive experiments for mixed Gaussian plus impulse noise show that significant performance improvements over the current state-of-the-art schemes have been achieved, which substantiates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Image Super-Resolution via Dual-Dictionary Learning And Sparse Representation

Learning-based image super-resolution aims to reconstruct high-frequency (HF) details from the prior model trained by a set of high- and low-resolution image patches. In this paper, HF to be estimated is considered as a combination of two components: main high-frequency (MHF) and residual high-frequency (RHF), and we propose a novel image super-resolution method via dual-dictionary learning and sparse representation, which consists of the main dictionary learning and the residual dictionary learning, to recover MHF and RHF respectively. Extensive experimental results on test images validate that by employing the proposed two-layer progressive scheme, more image details can be recovered and much better results can be achieved than the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both PSNR and visual perception.

Quantum discord and its asymptotic behaviors in a time-dependent XY spin chain

We study the dynamics and the asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord in a one-dimensional XY model coupled through time-dependent nearest-neighbor interactions and in the presence of a time-dependent magnetic field. We find that the time evolution of the nearest-neighbor quantum discord in this system shows non-ergodic behaviors but is asymptotic to its steady value at the long-time limit. The zero-temperature asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord is only determined by the ratio between the coupling parameter and magnetic field, whereas the finite-temperature asymptotic behaviors determined by both of them. These asymptotic behaviors are sensitive not only to the initial values of the coupling parameter and magnetic field, but also to the final values. It is interesting to note that quantum discords are more robust than entanglement against the effect of temperature. We also find particular parameter regimes, where the nearest-neighbor quantum discord is enhanced significantly.

Statistical Translation, Heat Kernels and Expected Distances

High dimensional structured data such as text and images is often poorly understood and misrepresented in statistical modeling. The standard histogram representation suffers from high variance and performs poorly in general. We explore novel connections between statistical translation, heat kernels on manifolds and graphs, and expected distances. These connections provide a new framework for unsupervised metric learning for text documents. Experiments indicate that the resulting distances are generally superior to their more standard counterparts.

Effective dynamics of stochastic wave equation with a random dynamical boundary condition

This work is devoted to the effective macroscopic dynamics of a weakly damped stochastic nonlinear wave equation with a random dynamical boundary condition. The white noises are taken into account not only in the model equation defined on a domain perforated with small holes, but also in the dynamical boundary condition on the boundaries of the small holes. An effective homogenized, macroscopic model is derived in the sense of probability distribution, which is a new stochastic wave equation on a unified domain, without small holes, with a usual static boundary condition.

The Entire Quantile Path of a Risk-Agnostic SVM Classifier

A quantile binary classifier uses the rule: Classify x as +1 if P(Y = 1|X = x) >= t, and as -1 otherwise, for a fixed quantile parameter t {[0, 1]. It has been shown that Support Vector Machines (SVMs) in the limit are quantile classifiers with t = 1/2 . In this paper, we show that by using asymmetric cost of misclassification SVMs can be appropriately extended to recover, in the limit, the quantile binary classifier for any t. We then present a principled algorithm to solve the extended SVM classifier for all values of t simultaneously. This has two implications: First, one can recover the entire conditional distribution P(Y = 1|X = x) = t for t {[0, 1]. Second, we can build a risk-agnostic SVM classifier where the cost of misclassification need not be known apriori. Preliminary numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
