PTN: A Poisson Transfer Network for Semi-supervised Few-shot Learning

The predicament in semi-supervised few-shot learning (SSFSL) is to maximize the value of the extra unlabeled data to boost the few-shot learner. In this paper, we propose a Poisson Transfer Network (PTN) to mine the unlabeled information for SSFSL from two aspects. First, the Poisson Merriman Bence Osher (MBO) model builds a bridge for the communications between labeled and unlabeled examples. This model serves as a more stable and informative classifier than traditional graph-based SSFSL methods in the message-passing process of the labels. Second, the extra unlabeled samples are employed to transfer the knowledge from base classes to novel classes through contrastive learning. Specifically, we force the augmented positive pairs close while push the negative ones distant. Our contrastive transfer scheme implicitly learns the novel-class embeddings to alleviate the over-fitting problem on the few labeled data. Thus, we can mitigate the degeneration of embedding generality in novel classes. Extensive experiments indicate that PTN outperforms the state-of-the-art few-shot and SSFSL models on miniImageNet and tieredImageNet benchmark datasets.

Towards Better Graph Representation: Two-Branch Collaborative Graph Neural Networks for Multimodal Marketing Intention Detection

Inspired by the fact that spreading and collecting information through the Internet becomes the norm, more and more people choose to post for-profit contents (images and texts) in social networks. Due to the difficulty of network censors, malicious marketing may be capable of harming society. Therefore, it is meaningful to detect marketing intentions online automatically. However, gaps between multimodal data make it difficult to fuse images and texts for content marketing detection. To this end, this paper proposes Two-Branch Collaborative Graph Neural Networks to collaboratively represent multimodal data by Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs) in an end-to-end fashion. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves superior graph classification performance for marketing intention detection.

AutoBSS: An Efficient Algorithm for Block Stacking Style Search

Neural network architecture design mostly focuses on the new convolutional operator or special topological structure of network block, little attention is drawn to the configuration of stacking each block, called Block Stacking Style (BSS). Recent studies show that BSS may also have an unneglectable impact on networks, thus we design an efficient algorithm to search it automatically. The proposed method, AutoBSS, is a novel AutoML algorithm based on Bayesian optimization by iteratively refining and clustering Block Stacking Style Code (BSSC), which can find optimal BSS in a few trials without biased evaluation. On ImageNet classification task, ResNet50/MobileNetV2/EfficientNet-B0 with our searched BSS achieve 79.29%/74.5%/77.79%, which outperform the original baselines by a large margin. More importantly, experimental results on model compression, object detection and instance segmentation show the strong generalizability of the proposed AutoBSS, and further verify the unneglectable impact of BSS on neural networks.

Edible meta-atoms

Metamaterials are artificial structures with unusual and superior properties that come from their carefully designed building blocks -- also called meta-atoms. Metamaterials have permeated large swatches of science, including electromagnetics and mechanics. Although metamaterials hold the promise for realizing technological advances, their potential to enhance interactions between humans and materials has remained unexplored. Here, we devise meta-atoms with tailored fracture properties to control mouthfeel sensory experience. Using chocolate as a model material, we first use meta-atoms to control the fracture anisotropy and the number of cracks and demonstrate that these properties are captured in mouthfeel experience. We further use topology optimization to rationally design edible meta-atoms with maximally anisotropic fracture strength. Our work opens avenues for the use of meta-atoms and metamaterials to control fracture and to enhance human-matter interactions.

Super-Resolving Compressed Video in Coding Chain

Scaling and lossy coding are widely used in video transmission and storage. Previous methods for enhancing the resolution of such videos often ignore the inherent interference between resolution loss and compression artifacts, which compromises perceptual video quality. To address this problem, we present a mixed-resolution coding framework, which cooperates with a reference-based DCNN. In this novel coding chain, the reference-based DCNN learns the direct mapping from low-resolution (LR) compressed video to their high-resolution (HR) clean version at the decoder side. We further improve reconstruction quality by devising an efficient deformable alignment module with receptive field block to handle various motion distances and introducing a disentangled loss that helps networks distinguish the artifact patterns from texture. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed innovations by comparing with state-of-the-art single image, video and reference-based restoration methods.

Non-Salient Region Object Mining for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Semantic segmentation aims to classify every pixel of an input image. Considering the difficulty of acquiring dense labels, researchers have recently been resorting to weak labels to alleviate the annotation burden of segmentation. However, existing works mainly concentrate on expanding the seed of pseudo labels within the image's salient region. In this work, we propose a non-salient region object mining approach for weakly supervised semantic segmentation. We introduce a graph-based global reasoning unit to strengthen the classification network's ability to capture global relations among disjoint and distant regions. This helps the network activate the object features outside the salient area. To further mine the non-salient region objects, we propose to exert the segmentation network's self-correction ability. Specifically, a potential object mining module is proposed to reduce the false-negative rate in pseudo labels. Moreover, we propose a non-salient region masking module for complex images to generate masked pseudo labels. Our non-salient region masking module helps further discover the objects in the non-salient region. Extensive experiments on the PASCAL VOC dataset demonstrate state-of-the-art results compared to current methods.

Jo-SRC: A Contrastive Approach for Combating Noisy Labels

Due to the memorization effect in Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), training with noisy labels usually results in inferior model performance. Existing state-of-the-art methods primarily adopt a sample selection strategy, which selects small-loss samples for subsequent training. However, prior literature tends to perform sample selection within each mini-batch, neglecting the imbalance of noise ratios in different mini-batches. Moreover, valuable knowledge within high-loss samples is wasted. To this end, we propose a noise-robust approach named Jo-SRC (Joint Sample Selection and Model Regularization based on Consistency). Specifically, we train the network in a contrastive learning manner. Predictions from two different views of each sample are used to estimate its "likelihood" of being clean or out-of-distribution. Furthermore, we propose a joint loss to advance the model generalization performance by introducing consistency regularization. Extensive experiments have validated the superiority of our approach over existing state-of-the-art methods.

ISTA-Net++: Flexible Deep Unfolding Network for Compressive Sensing

While deep neural networks have achieved impressive success in image compressive sensing (CS), most of them lack flexibility when dealing with multi-ratio tasks and multi-scene images in practical applications. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end flexible ISTA-unfolding deep network, dubbed ISTA-Net++, with superior performance and strong flexibility. Specifically, by developing a dynamic unfolding strategy, our model enjoys the adaptability of handling CS problems with different ratios, i.e., multi-ratio tasks, through a single model. A cross-block strategy is further utilized to reduce blocking artifacts and enhance the CS recovery quality. Furthermore, we adopt a balanced dataset for training, which brings more robustness when reconstructing images of multiple scenes. Extensive experiments on four datasets show that ISTA-Net++ achieves state-of-the-art results in terms of both quantitative metrics and visual quality. Considering its flexibility, effectiveness and practicability, our model is expected to serve as a suitable baseline in future CS research. Thousand to One: Semantic Prior Modeling for Conceptual Coding

Conceptual coding has been an emerging research topic recently, which encodes natural images into disentangled conceptual representations for compression. However, the compression performance of the existing methods is still sub-optimal due to the lack of comprehensive consideration of rate constraint and reconstruction quality. To this end, we propose a novel end-to-end semantic prior modeling-based conceptual coding scheme towards extremely low bitrate image compression, which leverages semantic-wise deep representations as a unified prior for entropy estimation and texture synthesis. Specifically, we employ semantic segmentation maps as structural guidance for extracting deep semantic prior, which provides fine-grained texture distribution modeling for better detail construction and higher flexibility in subsequent high-level vision tasks. Moreover, a cross-channel entropy model is proposed to further exploit the inter-channel correlation of the spatially independent semantic prior, leading to more accurate entropy estimation for rate-constrained training. The proposed scheme achieves an ultra-high 1000x compression ratio, while still enjoying high visual reconstruction quality and versatility towards visual processing and analysis tasks.

TOAN: Target-Oriented Alignment Network for Fine-Grained Image Categorization with Few Labeled Samples

The challenges of high intra-class variance yet low inter-class fluctuations in fine-grained visual categorization are more severe with few labeled samples, \textit{i.e.,} Fine-Grained categorization problems under the Few-Shot setting (FGFS). High-order features are usually developed to uncover subtle differences between sub-categories in FGFS, but they are less effective in handling the high intra-class variance. In this paper, we propose a Target-Oriented Alignment Network (TOAN) to investigate the fine-grained relation between the target query image and support classes. The feature of each support image is transformed to match the query ones in the embedding feature space, which reduces the disparity explicitly within each category. Moreover, different from existing FGFS approaches devise the high-order features over the global image with less explicit consideration of discriminative parts, we generate discriminative fine-grained features by integrating compositional concept representations to global second-order pooling. Extensive experiments are conducted on four fine-grained benchmarks to demonstrate the effectiveness of TOAN compared with the state-of-the-art models.

COLA-Net: Collaborative Attention Network for Image Restoration

Local and non-local attention-based methods have been well studied in various image restoration tasks while leading to promising performance. However, most of the existing methods solely focus on one type of attention mechanism (local or non-local). Furthermore, by exploiting the self-similarity of natural images, existing pixel-wise non-local attention operations tend to give rise to deviations in the process of characterizing long-range dependence due to image degeneration. To overcome these problems, in this paper we propose a novel collaborative attention network (COLA-Net) for image restoration, as the first attempt to combine local and non-local attention mechanisms to restore image content in the areas with complex textures and with highly repetitive details respectively. In addition, an effective and robust patch-wise non-local attention model is developed to capture long-range feature correspondences through 3D patches. Extensive experiments on synthetic image denoising, real image denoising and compression artifact reduction tasks demonstrate that our proposed COLA-Net is able to achieve state-of-the-art performance in both peak signal-to-noise ratio and visual perception, while maintaining an attractive computational complexity. Revisiting BFloat16 Training

State-of-the-art generic low-precision training algorithms use a mix of 16-bit and 32-bit precision, creating the folklore that 16-bit hardware compute units alone are not enough to maximize model accuracy. As a result, deep learning accelerators are forced to support both 16-bit and 32-bit floating-point units (FPUs), which is more costly than only using 16-bit FPUs for hardware design. We ask: can we train deep learning models only with 16-bit floating-point units, while still matching the model accuracy attained by 32-bit training? Towards this end, we study 16-bit-FPU training on the widely adopted BFloat16 unit. While these units conventionally use nearest rounding to cast output to 16-bit precision, we show that nearest rounding for model weight updates often cancels small updates, which degrades the convergence and model accuracy. Motivated by this, we study two simple techniques well-established in numerical analysis, stochastic rounding and Kahan summation, to remedy the model accuracy degradation in 16-bit-FPU training. We demonstrate that these two techniques can enable up to 7% absolute validation accuracy gain in 16-bit-FPU training. This leads to 0.1% lower to 0.2% higher validation accuracy compared to 32-bit training across seven deep learning applications.

Temperature dependent coherence properties of NV ensemble in diamond up to 600K

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is an ideal candidate for quantum sensors because of its excellent optical and coherence property. However, previous studies are usually conducted at low or room temperature. The lack of full knowledge of coherence properties of the NV center at high temperature limits NV's further applications. Here, we systematically explore the coherence properties of the NV center ensemble at temperatures from 300 K to 600 K. Coherence time $T_2$ decreases rapidly from $184 μs$ at 300 K to $30 μs$ at 600 K, which is attributed to the interaction with paramagnetic impurities. Single-quantum and double-quantum relaxation rates show an obvious temperature-dependent behavior as well, and both of them are dominated by the two phonon Raman process. While the inhomogeneous dephasing time $T_2^*$ and thermal echo decoherence time $T_{TE}$ remain almost unchanged as temperature rises. Since $T_{TE}$ changed slightly as temperature rises, a thermal-echo-based thermometer is demonstrated to have a sensitivity of $41 mK/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 450 K. These findings will help to pave the way toward NV-based high-temperature sensing, as well as to have a more comprehensive understanding of the origin of decoherence in the solid-state qubit.

Semantically Meaningful Class Prototype Learning for One-Shot Image Semantic Segmentation

One-shot semantic image segmentation aims to segment the object regions for the novel class with only one annotated image. Recent works adopt the episodic training strategy to mimic the expected situation at testing time. However, these existing approaches simulate the test conditions too strictly during the training process, and thus cannot make full use of the given label information. Besides, these approaches mainly focus on the foreground-background target class segmentation setting. They only utilize binary mask labels for training. In this paper, we propose to leverage the multi-class label information during the episodic training. It will encourage the network to generate more semantically meaningful features for each category. After integrating the target class cues into the query features, we then propose a pyramid feature fusion module to mine the fused features for the final classifier. Furthermore, to take more advantage of the support image-mask pair, we propose a self-prototype guidance branch to support image segmentation. It can constrain the network for generating more compact features and a robust prototype for each semantic class. For inference, we propose a fused prototype guidance branch for the segmentation of the query image. Specifically, we leverage the prediction of the query image to extract the pseudo-prototype and combine it with the initial prototype. Then we utilize the fused prototype to guide the final segmentation of the query image. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed approach.

Feasibility study of TPC detector at high luminosity $Z$ pole on the circular collider

With the development of the circular collider, it is necessary to make accurate physics experimental measurements of particle properties at higher luminosity $Z$ pole. Micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs), which contain Gaseous Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Micro-mesh gaseous structures (Micromegas), have excellent potential for development as the readout devices of the time projection chamber (TPC) tracker detector. To meet the updated physics requirements of the high luminosity $Z$ from the preliminary concept design report (preCDR) to concept design report (CDR) at the circular electron positron collider (CEPC), In this paper, the space charge distortion of the TPC detector is simulated with the CEPC beam structure. Using the multi-physics simulation software package, the distribution of ion estimated by Geant4 is used as the input for the differential equation, and the relationship between the ion density distribution and electric field in the detector chamber is simulated. These simulation results show that the maximum deviation for Higgs $\mathcal{O}$(25 $μ$m) meets the performance requirements in CEPC TPC detector at the high luminosity $Z$ pole, while it is still a considerable challenge for $Z$ pole, with the maximum deviation $\mathcal{O}$($>100~μ$m). According to the previous developments, the cascaded structure of GEM and Micromegas detector has been measured. The new considerations of the detector's requirements were given, the gain needs to be reached to about 2000 with IBF$\times$Gain under 0.1, and IBF means the ions back flow ratio of the detector. The pixel TPC is a potential option to replace the traditional MPGDs with the low gain, low occupancy, and outstanding pattern recognition. Finally, some update parameters and experiments results were compared.

Temporal-Amount Snapshot MultiGraph for Ethereum Transaction Tracking

With the wide application of blockchain in the financial field, the rise of various types of cybercrimes has brought great challenges to the security of blockchain. In order to better understand this emerging market and explore more efficient countermeasures for effective supervision, it is imperative to track transactions on blockchain-based systems. Due to the openness of Ethereum, we can easily access the publicly available transaction records, model them as a complex network, and further study the problem of transaction tracking via link prediction, which provides a deeper understanding of Ethereum transactions from a network perspective. Specifically, we introduce an embedding based link prediction framework that is composed of temporal-amount snapshot multigraph (TASMG) and present temporal-amount walk (TAW). By taking the realistic rules and features of transaction networks into consideration, we propose TASMG to model Ethereum transaction records as a temporal-amount network and then present TAW to effectively embed accounts via their transaction records, which integrates temporal and amount information of the proposed network. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework in learning more informative representations and could be an effective method for transaction tracking.

Time-Series Snapshot Network for Partner Recommendation: A Case Study on OSS

The last decade has witnessed the rapid growth of open source software (OSS). Still, all contributors may find it difficult to assimilate into OSS community even they are enthusiastic to make contributions. We thus suggest that partner recommendation across different roles may benefit both the users and developers, i.e., once we are able to make successful recommendation for those in need, it may dramatically contribute to the productivity of developers and the enthusiasm of users, thus further boosting OSS projects' development. Motivated by this potential, we model the partner recommendation as link prediction task from email data via network embedding methods. In this paper, we introduce time-series snapshot network (TSSN) which is a mixture network to model the interactions among users and developers. Based on the established TSSN, we perform temporal biased walk (TBW) to automatically capture both temporal and structural information of the email network, i.e., the behavioral similarity between individuals in the OSS email network. Experiments on ten Apache datasets demonstrate that the proposed TBW significantly outperforms a number of advanced random walk based embedding methods, leading to the state-of-the-art recommendation performance.
