Subspaces of interval maps related to the topological entropy

For $a\in [0,+\infty)$, the function space $E_{\geq a}$ ($E_{>a}$; $E_{\leq a}$; $E_{ a}$ are homeomorphic to the Hilbert space $l_2$ and the spaces $E_{\leq a}$ and $E_{<a}$ are contractible. Moreover, the subspaces of $E_{\leq a}$ and $E_{<a}$ consisting of all piecewise monotone maps are homotopy dense in them, respectively.

Design and performance of the LLRF control system for CSNS LINAC

The China spallation neutron source (CSNS) linac is designed with beam energy of 81MeV and a peak current of 15mA in the first phase. The RF power system for the 81 MeV Linac requires 8 units of RF power sources, each unit has one independent digital low level RF (LLRF) control system which is used to stabilize the amplitude and phase of the RF accelerating field along the linac, and to minimize beam loss. During beam commissioning, all of 8 on-line units of LLRF control system were operating stably and reliable, the control precision of accelerating fields met requirement of beam commissioning. The amplitude and phase variations of the linac fields are less than $\pm$0.2% and $\pm$0.2$^\circ$ without beam loading, or $\pm$0.5% and $\pm$0.5$^\circ$ with 10mA beam loading, much better than the design requirements of $\pm$1% in amplitude and $\pm$1$^\circ$ in phase.

Calibration of the angular momenta of the minor planets in the solar system

We aim to determine the relative angle between the total angular momentum of the minor planets and that of the Sun-planets system, and to improve the orientation of the invariable plane of the solar system. By utilizing physical parameters available in public domain archives, we assigned reasonable masses to 718041 minor planets throughout the solar system, including near-Earth objects, main belt asteroids, Jupiter trojans, trans-Neptunian objects, scattered-disk objects, and centaurs. Then we combined the orbital data to calibrate the angular momenta of these small bodies, and evaluated the specific contribution of the massive dwarf planets. The effects of uncertainties on the mass determination and the observational incompleteness were also estimated. We determine the total angular momentum of the known minor planets to be $1.7817\times10^{46}$ g $\cdot$ cm$^2$ $\cdot$ s$^{-1}$. The relative angle $α$ between this vector and the total angular momentum of the Sun-planets system is calculated to be 14.74 deg.. By excluding the dwarf planets Eris, Pluto, and Haumea, which have peculiar angular momentum directions, $α$ drops sharply to 1.76 deg.; a similar result applies to each individual minor planet group. This suggests that, without these three most massive bodies, the plane perpendicular to the total angular momentum of the minor planets would be close to the invariable plane of the solar system. On the other hand, the inclusion of Eris, Haumea, and Makemake can produce a difference of 1254 mas in the inclination of the invariable plane, which is much larger than the difference of 9 mas induced by Ceres, Vesta, and Pallas as found previously. By taking into account the angular momentum contributions from all minor planets, including unseen ones, the orientation improvement of the invariable plane is larger than 1000 mas in inclination with a $1σ$ error of 50-140 mas.

The $ΔI$=2 bands in $^{109}$In: possible antimagnetic rotation

The high-spin structure of $^{109}$In was investigated with the $^{100}$Mo($^{14}$N, 5$n$)$^{109}$In fusion-evaporation reaction at CIAE, Beijing. Eleven new $γ$-rays of $^{109}$In were identified, by which the bandheads of the $ΔI$=2 rotational bands were confirmed. The configurations were assigned with the help of the systematic discussion. Furthermore, the rotational bands are compared with the tilted-axis cranking calculations based on a relativistic mean-field approach. The rotational bands involving the $1p1h$ excitation to the $π$$d_{5/2}$ and $π$$g_{7/2}$ orbitals are suggested as candidates for antimagnetic rotation based on the theoretical results.

Energy staggering parameters in nuclear magnetic rotational bands

The systematics of energy staggering for the magnetic rotational bands with $M1$ and $E2$ transition properties strictly consistent with the features of good candidates of magnetic rotational bands in the $A\sim80$, 110, 130 and 190 mass regions are presented. The regularities exhibited by these bands concerning the staggering parameter which increases with increasing spin are in agreement with the semiclassical description of shears mechanism. In addition, the abnormal behaviours in the backbend regions or close to band termination have also been discussed. Taking the magnetic dipole bands with same configuration in three $N=58$ isotones, i.e., $^{103}$Rh, $^{105}$Ag, and~$^{107}$In, as examples, the transition from chiral rotation to magnetic rotation with the proton number approaching $Z=50$ is presented. Moreover, the self-consistent tilted axis cranking and principle axis cranking relativistic mean-field theories are applied to investigate the rotational mechanism in dipole band of $^{105}$Ag.

Synchro-curvature modelling of the multi-frequency non-thermal emission of pulsars

We apply a synchro-curvature spectral emission model based on characterizing the dynamics of magnetospheric particles to fit the phase-average spectra of the most extended database for the non-thermal spectra of pulsars. We consider 36 pulsars with well-determined non-thermal spectra from X-rays to gamma-rays. The sample includes Crab and Crab twin, for which the spectra extends even to the optical/ultraviolet and infrared energies. We find that the model --with just three physical parameters and a global scaling-- can fit the observations well across eight orders of magnitude for 18 of the 36 pulsars studied. Additionally, we find a set of 8 pulsars for which the model still provides arguably good fits and another set of 10 pulsars for which the model fails in reproducing the spectra. We discuss why, propose and provide physical interpretations for a simple model extension (related to the geometry of the accelerating system with regards to the observer) that allows dealing with all such cases, ultimately providing very good fits for all pulsars. The extended model is still austere, adding only two additional parameters to the former set, of the same kind of the ones previously used. We use these fits to discuss issues going from the observed spectral origin, to the extent of the dominance of synchrotron or curvature regimes, the use of a model as predictor for searching new non-thermal pulsars starting from gamma-ray surveys, and how the model offers a setting where phase shifts between X-ray and gamma-ray light curves would naturally arise.

Optimizing Electric Multiple Unit Circulation Plan within Maintenance Constraints for High-Speed Railway System

The Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) circulation plan is the foundation of EMU assignment and maintenance planning, and its primary task is to determine the connections of trains in terms of train timetable and maintenance constraints. We study the problem of optimizing EMU circulation plan, and a 0-1 integer programming model is presented on the basis of train connection network design. The model aims at minimizing the total connection time of trains and maximizing the travel mileage of each EMU circulation, and it meets the maintenance constraints from two aspects of mileage and time cycle. To solve a large-scale problem efficiently, we present a heuristic algorithm based on particle swarm optimization algorithm. At last, we conclude the contributions and directions of future research.

Enhancement of the upper critical field in the cubic Laves-phase superconductor HfV$_{2}$ by Nb doping

We report the effect of Nb doping on the upper critical field of the cubic Laves-phase superconductor HfV$_{2}$ studied in a series of HfV$_{2-x}$Nb$_{x}$ samples with 0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 under pulsed fields up to 30 T. The undoped HfV$_{2}$ undergoes a martensitic structural transition around 110 K, and becomes superconducting below $T_{\rm c}$ = 9.4 K. Upon Nb doping, while the structural transition is suppressed for $x$ $\geq$ 0.1, a maximum in $T_{\rm c}$ of 10.1 K and zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of 22.4 T is found at $x$ = 0.2, which is ascribed to an increase of the density of states at the Fermi level. For all samples, the temperature dependence of $B_{\rm c2}$ can be well described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory that takes into account both the spin paramagnetic effect and spin orbit scattering. In addition, a comparison is made between the $B_{\rm c2}$ behavior of HfV$_{2-x}$Nb$_{x}$ and those of Nb-Ti and Nb$_{3}$Sn.

Bounded complexity, mean equicontinuity and discrete spectrum

We study dynamical systems which have bounded complexity with respect to three kinds metrics: the Bowen metric $d_n$, the max-mean metric $\hat{d}_n$ and the mean metric $\bar{d}_n$, both in topological dynamics and ergodic theory. It is shown that a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_n$ (resp. $\hat{d}_n$) if and only if it is equicontinuous (resp. equicontinuous in the mean). However, we construct minimal systems which have bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_n$ but not equicontinuous in the mean. It turns out that an invariant measure $μ$ on $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_n$ if and only if $(X,T)$ is $μ$-equicontinuous. Meanwhile, it is shown that $μ$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\hat{d}_n$ if and only if $μ$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_n$ if and only if $(X,T)$ is $μ$-mean equicontinuous if and only if it has discrete spectrum.

Learning Guided Convolutional Network for Depth Completion

Dense depth perception is critical for autonomous driving and other robotics applications. However, modern LiDAR sensors only provide sparse depth measurement. It is thus necessary to complete the sparse LiDAR data, where a synchronized guidance RGB image is often used to facilitate this completion. Many neural networks have been designed for this task. However, they often na\"ıvely fuse the LiDAR data and RGB image information by performing feature concatenation or element-wise addition. Inspired by the guided image filtering, we design a novel guided network to predict kernel weights from the guidance image. These predicted kernels are then applied to extract the depth image features. In this way, our network generates content-dependent and spatially-variant kernels for multi-modal feature fusion. Dynamically generated spatially-variant kernels could lead to prohibitive GPU memory consumption and computation overhead. We further design a convolution factorization to reduce computation and memory consumption. The GPU memory reduction makes it possible for feature fusion to work in multi-stage scheme. We conduct comprehensive experiments to verify our method on real-world outdoor, indoor and synthetic datasets. Our method produces strong results. It outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the NYUv2 dataset and ranks 1st on the KITTI depth completion benchmark at the time of submission. It also presents strong generalization capability under different 3D point densities, various lighting and weather conditions as well as cross-dataset evaluations. The code will be released for reproduction.

NetSMF: Large-Scale Network Embedding as Sparse Matrix Factorization

We study the problem of large-scale network embedding, which aims to learn latent representations for network mining applications. Previous research shows that 1) popular network embedding benchmarks, such as DeepWalk, are in essence implicitly factorizing a matrix with a closed form, and 2)the explicit factorization of such matrix generates more powerful embeddings than existing methods. However, directly constructing and factorizing this matrix---which is dense---is prohibitively expensive in terms of both time and space, making it not scalable for large networks. In this work, we present the algorithm of large-scale network embedding as sparse matrix factorization (NetSMF). NetSMF leverages theories from spectral sparsification to efficiently sparsify the aforementioned dense matrix, enabling significantly improved efficiency in embedding learning. The sparsified matrix is spectrally close to the original dense one with a theoretically bounded approximation error, which helps maintain the representation power of the learned embeddings. We conduct experiments on networks of various scales and types. Results show that among both popular benchmarks and factorization based methods, NetSMF is the only method that achieves both high efficiency and effectiveness. We show that NetSMF requires only 24 hours to generate effective embeddings for a large-scale academic collaboration network with tens of millions of nodes, while it would cost DeepWalk months and is computationally infeasible for the dense matrix factorization solution. The source code of NetSMF is publicly available (https://github.com/xptree/NetSMF).

Gradient Boosting With Piece-Wise Linear Regression Trees

Gradient Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT) is a very successful ensemble learning algorithm widely used across a variety of applications. Recently, several variants of GBDT training algorithms and implementations have been designed and heavily optimized in some very popular open sourced toolkits including XGBoost, LightGBM and CatBoost. In this paper, we show that both the accuracy and efficiency of GBDT can be further enhanced by using more complex base learners. Specifically, we extend gradient boosting to use piecewise linear regression trees (PL Trees), instead of piecewise constant regression trees, as base learners. We show that PL Trees can accelerate convergence of GBDT and improve the accuracy. We also propose some optimization tricks to substantially reduce the training time of PL Trees, with little sacrifice of accuracy. Moreover, we propose several implementation techniques to speedup our algorithm on modern computer architectures with powerful Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) parallelism. The experimental results show that GBDT with PL Trees can provide very competitive testing accuracy with comparable or less training time.

Observation of a Majorana zero mode in a topologically protected edge channel

Superconducting proximity pairing in helical edge modes, such as those of topological insulators (TI), is predicted to provide a unique platform for realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We use scanning tunneling microscopy measurements to probe the influence of proximity induced superconductivity and magnetism on the helical hinge states of Bi(111) films, grown on a superconducting Nb substrate and decorated with magnetic Fe clusters. Consistent with model calculations, our measurements reveal the emergence of a localized MZM at the interface between the superconducting helical edge channel and the Fe clusters with strong magnetization component along the edge. Our experiments also resolve the MZM spin signature that distinguishes it from trivial in-gap states that may accidently occur at zero energy in a superconductor.

Stochastic Gradient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo with Variance Reduction for Bayesian Inference

Gradient-based Monte Carlo sampling algorithms, like Langevin dynamics and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, are important methods for Bayesian inference. In large-scale settings, full-gradients are not affordable and thus stochastic gradients evaluated on mini-batches are used as a replacement. In order to reduce the high variance of noisy stochastic gradients, Dubey et al. [2016] applied the standard variance reduction technique on stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics and obtained both theoretical and experimental improvements. In this paper, we apply the variance reduction tricks on Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and achieve better theoretical convergence results compared with the variance-reduced Langevin dynamics. Moreover, we apply the symmetric splitting scheme in our variance-reduced Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithms to further improve the theoretical results. The experimental results are also consistent with the theoretical results. As our experiment shows, variance-reduced Hamiltonian Monte Carlo demonstrates better performance than variance-reduced Langevin dynamics in Bayesian regression and classification tasks on real-world datasets.

TS-RNN: Text Steganalysis Based on Recurrent Neural Networks

With the rapid development of natural language processing technologies, more and more text steganographic methods based on automatic text generation technology have appeared in recent years. These models use the powerful self-learning and feature extraction ability of the neural networks to learn the feature expression of massive normal texts. Then they can automatically generate dense steganographic texts which conform to such statistical distribution based on the learned statistical patterns. In this paper, we observe that the conditional probability distribution of each word in the automatically generated steganographic texts will be distorted after embedded with hidden information. We use Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to extract these feature distribution differences and then classify those features into cover text and stego text categories. Experimental results show that the proposed model can achieve high detection accuracy. Besides, the proposed model can even make use of the subtle differences of the feature distribution of texts to estimate the amount of hidden information embedded in the generated steganographic text.

Anti-Confusing: Region-Aware Network for Human Pose Estimation

In this work, we propose a novel framework named Region-Aware Network (RANet), which learns the ability of anti-confusing in case of heavy occlusion, nearby person and symmetric appearance, for human pose estimation. Specifically, the proposed method addresses three key aspects, i.e., data augmentation, feature learning and prediction fusion, respectively. First, we propose Parsing-based Data Augmentation (PDA) to generate abundant data that synthesizes confusing textures. Second, we not only propose a Feature Pyramid Stem (FPS) to learn stronger low-level features in lower stage; but also incorporate an Effective Region Extraction (ERE) module to excavate better target-specific features. Third, we introduce Cascade Voting Fusion (CVF) to explicitly exclude the inferior predictions and fuse the rest effective predictions for the final pose estimation. Extensive experimental results on two popular benchmarks, i.e. MPII and LSP, demonstrate the effectiveness of our method against the state-of-the-art competitors. Especially on easily-confusable joints, our method makes significant improvement.

Probing the time variation of the effective Newton's constant with optimal redshift weights

We propose a new method for probing the time variation of the effective Newton's constant $G_{\rm eff}$, based on the optimal redshift weighting scheme, and demonstrate the efficacy using the DESI galaxy spectroscopic survey. We find that with the optimal redshift weights, the evolution of $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ can be significantly better measured: the uncertainty of $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ can be reduced by a factor of $2.2\sim12.8$ using the DESI BGS sample at $z \lesssim0.45$, and by a factor of $1.3\sim4.4$ using the DESI ELG sample covering $0.65\lesssim z\lesssim1.65$.

Lijiang 2.4-meter Telescope and its Instruments

Lijiang 2.4-meter Telescope(LJT), the largest common-purpose optical telescope in China, has been applied to the world-wide astronomers since 2008. It is located at Gaomeigu site, Lijiang Observatory(LJO), the southwest of China. The site has very good observational conditions. Since 10-year operation, several instruments have been equipped on the LJT. Astronomers can perform both photometric and spectral observations. The main scientific goals of LJT include photometric and spectral evolution of supernova, reverberation mapping of active galactic nucleus, physical properties of binary star and near-earth object(comet and asteroid), identification of exoplanet, and all kinds of transients. Until now, the masses of 41 high accretion rate black holes have been measured, and more than 168 supernova have been identified by the LJT. More than 190 papers related to the LJT have been published. In this paper, the general observation condition of the Gaomeigu site is introduced at first. Then, the LJT structure is described in detail, including the optical, mechanical, motion and control system. The specification of all the instruments, and some detailed parameters of the YFOSC is also presented. Finally, some important scientific results and future expectations are summarized.
