Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry in multilevel superconducting flux qubit

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry has been extensively investigated in quantum two-level systems, with particular interests on artificial system such as superconducting flux qubits. With increasing the driving field amplitude, more energy levels will be involved into the quantum evolution, which results in population inversion and many interesting interference patterns. These interference patterns can be used to obtain the parameters characterizing the system and probe dephasing mechanisms of the qubit. Most recently, experiments have been extended to the regime with higher-frequency and larger-amplitude driving field, in which the interference pattern exhibited more complicated characteristics. In this article, we give a universal description of the characteristics observed in both low-frequency and high-frequency regimes. Besides explaining the already observed experimental results, our theoretical model predicted many interesting phenomenon, which can be demonstrated by future experiments.

Population Inversion Induced by Landau-Zener Transition in a Strongly Driven rf-SQUID

Microwave resonances between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states with single photon and multiphoton absorption are observed in a strongly driven radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device flux qubit. The amplitude of the resonant peaks and dips are modulated by the power of the applied microwave irradiation and a population inversion is generated at low flux bias. These results, which can be addressed with Landau-Zener transition, are useful to develop an alternative means to initialize and manipulate the flux qubit, as well as to do a controllable population inversion used in a micromaser.

Quantum Jump Approach to Switching Process of a Josephson Junction Coupled to a Microscopic Two-Level System

With microwave irradiation, the switching current of a Josephson junction coupled to a microscopic two-level system jumps randomly between two discrete states. We modeled the switching process of the coupled system with quantum jump approach that was generally used in quantum optics. The parameters that affect the character of the quantum jumps between macroscopic quantum states are discussed. The results obtained from our theoretical analysis agree well with those of the experiments and provide a clear physical picture for the macroscopic quantum jumps in Josephson junctions coupled with two-level systems. In addition, quantum jumps may serve as a useful tool to investigate the microscopic two-level structures in solid-state systems.

Quantum Jumps between Macroscopic Quantum States of a Superconducting Qubit Coupled to a Microscopic Two-Level System

We report the observation of quantum jumps between macroscopic quantum states in a superconducting phase qubit coupled to the two-level systems in the Josephson tunnel junction, and all key features of quantum jumps are confirmed in the experiments. Moreover, quantum jumps can be used to calibrate such two-level systems, which are believed to be one of the main decoherence sources in Josephson devices.

Matrix rearrangement approach for the entangling power with mixed qudit systems

We extend the former matrix rearrangement approach of the entangling power to the general cases, without the requirement of the same dimensions of the subsystems. The entangling power of a unitary operator is completely determined by its realignment and partial transposition. As applications, we calculate the entangling power for the Ising interaction and the isotropic Heisenberg interaction in the mixed qudit system.

Thermal Escape from a Metastable State in Periodically Driven Josephson Junctions

Resonant activation and noise-enhanced stability were observed in an underdamped real physical system, i.e., Josephson tunnel junctions. With a weak sinusoidal driving force applied, the thermal activated escape from a potential well underwent resonance-like behavior as a function of the driving frequency. The resonance also crucially depended on the initial condition of the system. Numerical simulations showed good agreement with the experimental results.

A Theoretical Search for the Optimum Giant Magnetoresistance

The maximum current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance is searched for in magnetic multilayers made of Co, Ni, and Cu with disorder levels similar to those found in room temperature experiments. The calculation is made possible by a highly optimized linear response code, which uses the impurity averaged Green's function technique and a 9-band per spin tight binding model. Using simulated annealing, hundreds of different configurations of the atomic layers are examined to find a maximum GMR of 450% in ultrathin Ni/Cu superlattices.

Correlation between Spin Polarization and Magnetic Moment in Ferromagnetic Alloys

The correlation between the magnetic moment in ferromagnetic alloys and the tunneling spin polarization in ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor tunneling experiments has been a mystery. The measured spin polarization for Fe, Co, Ni, and various Ni alloys is positive and roughly proportional to their magnetic moments, which can not be explained by considering the net density of states. Using a tight-binding coherent potential approximation (CPA) model, we show that while the polarization of the net density of states is not correlated with the magnetic moment, the polarization of the density of states of {\it s} electrons is correlated with the magnetic moment in the same manner as observed by the tunneling experiments. We also discuss the spin polarization measurements by Andreev reflection experiments, some of which obtained different results from the tunneling experiments and our calculations.

Nonlinear Magneto-Optics of Fe Monolayers from first principles: Structural dependence and spin-orbit coupling strength

We calculate the nonlinear magneto-optical response of free-standing fcc (001), (110) and (111) oriented Fe monolayers. The bandstructures are determined from first principles using a full-potential LAPW method with the additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling. The variation of the spin-orbit coupling strength and the nonlinear magneto-optical spectra upon layer orientation are investigated. We find characteristic differences which indicate an enhanced sensitivity of nonlinear magneto-optics to surface orientation and variation of the in-plane lattice constants. In particular the crossover from onedimensional stripe structures to twodimensional films of (111) layers exhibits a clean signature in the nonlinear Kerr-spectra and demonstrates the versatility of nonlinear magneto-optics as a tool for in situ thin-film analysis.

Calculation of Giant Magnetoresistance in Laterally Confined Multilayers

We have studied the Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) for laterally confined multilayers, e.g., layers of wires, using the classical Boltzmann equation in the current-in-plane (CIP) geometry. For spin-independent specularity factors at the sides of the wires we find that the GMR due to bulk and surface scattering decreases with lateral confinement. The length scale at which this occurs is of order the film thickness and the mean free paths. The precise prefactor depends on the relative importance of surface and bulk scattering anisotropies. For spin-dependent specularity factors at the sides of the wires the GMR can increase in some cases with decreasing width. The origin of the change in the GMR in both cases can be understood in terms of lateral confinement changing the effective mean free paths within the layers.
